Finished reading the M&R, now I have a real question: I did some research, but I can't find anything about a settlement between KP and Sega/EA (just with Archie). All I find is that it was dismissed several times and is now like "frozen". Could you point towards the right direction to get more information about this settlement? Also, only if it is ok to ask a more personal question? What is your opinion on KP's attitude towards Shade and Chronicles, and the actions he has taken about them?

My wording was a little off there. I don't believe Ken ever had a direct settlement with Sega, but Sega made Archie deal with him on their behalf in the settlement. One of the big reasons that lawsuit was such a mess was that Sega forced Archie to handle the lawsuit themselves and cover all the expenses, threatening to revoke the Sonic license from them if they couldn't handle it. I've updated the wording of that sentence in the review to clear this up.

As for the Chronicles thing, Ken's right about the game being inspired by his Knuckles comics, but it's absurd that he thinks that means he can claim ownership of it.

Cherry Magic Episode 7

This is one of those weeks where being so familiar with the Japanese live action version of this story actually got in my way at first, because I went into this week expecting the Cute Date Episode and instead we got something very different (and more interesting). In this expanded version of the story, the show took a beat to first take us through a bad date and reinforce its themes about the importance of communication, something that will matter a whole lot when Achi inevitably loses his telepathy powers. Once I caught on to what the story was doing, I really appreciated it (though I will say I think the execution of the date was a bit weak in some spots, there was a weird malaise to the whole sequence and we could have used more internal monologue to track Achi).

But I really loved what this bad date accomplished in the story. Karan getting too into his head and Doing Too Much? Check. Achi failing to communicate how he's feeling? Check check. The combination of these things leading to both of them feeling vaguely uneasy and dissatisfied? Check check check. (Also loved the subtle KP shade in that helicopter set up).

And it was perfectly contrasted with Jinta and Min's much simpler, and ultimately much better date. They didn't do anything fancy, they simply connected with each other authentically and had a great time doing it. I love that Jinta was so excited to learn about the power of communication that he immediately had to run and tell his bestie all about it. And that Achi immediately took that advice to heart and ran to Karan to confess how he was feeling was another big growth moment for him. I love that this moment of authentic communication, unaided by mind reading, is what allowed them to advance in their relationship.

As for Pai and Rock, I am still happy with the line this show is walking with them. Rock is obviously falling for Pai, but so far, she is not falling for him, and the show keeps reinforcing that she is happy being single and does not have romance on her mind. At least, not in her real life--her commitment to fictional romance remains strong. (Btw, I went back to check and I think they were watching Theory of Love.) My ideal version of this storyline would involve Pai ultimately deciding she would prefer not to date Rock after he confesses and them remaining friends. I don't know if that's how it will go, but I like that this story has provided a clear aroacespec read for her even if she dates Rock.

This year, the service will reflect on the “importance of love and empathy”, with a guest list designed to “shine a light on individuals from all over the UK who have shown love, kindness and empathy towards others in their communities”.”

I kind of love this as a theme. I like to think this is Catherine’s way of throwing a little classy shade at everyone who has been so unbelievably cruel to her this year. Can’t wait!

I think it's a great theme too.

One thing that Kate does really well with "Together at Christmas" is the meaning and care she puts into the theme to make it relevant and important. It's clear that she puts a lot of time and effort into planning and hosting the service each year and her personal investment seems to be appreciated by the communities being recognized.

The KP statement does make me feel like we might see Kate open up a little more about her experience. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she usually has something like a "roundtable" discussion with some other participants right? (I'm thinking specifically of the discussion she hosted at Windsor Castle in 2022 about sharing memories of loved ones but I can't remember off the top of my head if there was one in 2023.)

Also, I'm having a really hard time finding KP's actual press release about the service. I can only find articles quoting KP's statement and KP's only activity on social media has been the investiture William did today. Since all the articles - I saw it on People, Town & Country, Reuters, Tatler and the Daily Mail - dropped at the same time, there was definitely a press release and I think 7pm-ish EST (the timestamp on most of the articles I saw) is usually when UK press embargos lift. I wonder if maybe KP's statement is actually coming tomorrow and possibly with a new photo of Kate (since their press releases about 'Together at Christmas' usually comes with a new portrait of Kate). Anyway, just odd.

After a brutal loss, The Daily Express (of course 🙄) came to Novak's press conference just to gather information about Catherine. Nole, being All Around Amazing, handled the question like a true Champion:

Q: What did it mean to have the Princess of Wales here today because obviously it was the first time we've seen her in Wimbledon given she's got this health battle and I just wondered what you said to her and what she said to you because obviously you've spoken so many times in the past...

AAA Novak: Yes it was of course a privilege to be in her presence again and I said to her that it is very nice to see her in good health. She seems to be in good health so that's obviously very positive news for everyone in this country, but also for Wimbledon--- for championships---- to have Her Royal Highness here of course with her family members. It's amazing. It's incredible support that they've been giving over the years to this tournament and I know that she and her sister (PIPPA 🎾) have played tennis for a very long time and so they TRULY respect and admire the game, and they also understand tennis which is great to have. It's wonderful to have that kind of support from the royal family.

Prompt 14 -KP Superlatives (dealer's choice)

1. Best Hair -Tankhun, and not just because I have a thing for red hair...okay mostly because I have a thing for red hair. But what can I say, it was at least 3 different shades, it was snatched. It was fab. 

Runner Up -Kinn. I know Mile cut his hair for this role and once it was free, it seemed to take the opportunity to fluff up as much as possible. It’s gloriously wild and poofy. 

 

2. Best James Bond Roleplay - Kinn in the white tux

3. Best Comedic performance in a serious role -Pol. I know the prevailing theory is that he was hired to be a companion for Tankhun more than a bodyguard, but he still has bodyguard training so he can actually protect Khun and he’s still included in bodyguard activities, but yeah.

Runner Up -Gun. This man never met a dramatic moment he couldn’t drag over the top kicking and screaming. 

4. Best Prop - Red Ducati motorcycles. These get ridden more than Porsche. Everybody looks good on them. Both Kinn and Vegas let Porsche drive. They actually have passenger helmets that look like they’d protect precious skulls(looking at you Between Us and Love in the Air).  

Runner Up - Kinn’s lucky gun. It’s just sexy and romantic that he gave it to Porsche as a token, okay. It’s also the gun Porsche is using when he’s contemplating killing the man who he thinks killed his parents (which is an interesting meta that I am not doing, nope).  

5. Best Unhinged Moment - Pool pants y’all. In a show full of unhinged moments, this one is supreme for me. I still shudder thinking about it. 

Runner Up - Atticwife Nampheung (pictured hearing this plot point for the first time)

I couldn’t decide. Both are unhinged in entirely different ways and are perfect examples of the tonal whiplash of that show(something I adore shrugs). 

6. Best Serious Performance in a comedic role -Jom. I side-eye the comic relief characters but KP was awesome with this? Like every character is heart-warming instead of annoying and still funny. I probably should have done an underrated character post for Jom tbh. I love him. I love the way he supports his friends, giving Porsche the money he won on the fight, staying up to the point of exhaustion helping Tem deal with his broken heart. For all his goofiness, he’s smart and observant and I still think he was deliberately fucking with Kinn, who even if he didn’t know he was Porsche’s boss, was clearly some rich guy out of his element and only there because he was crushing on Porsche. It’s a small role and it could have been just a throwaway part but it’s so much better than that because who he is says a lot about who Porsche is and shows why he became such good friends with the misfit gang. 

Runner Up -Yok. Definitely not an underrated character. I think we all know that Yok is the shit. But again, she’s not just funny and fabulous, she’s smart and she loves Porsche and rolls with all the weirdness he brings with him and gives him great advice and becomes a safe person for Tankhun. She turns what could have been a caricature into the only mature, caring, functional, non-evil “adult” character in the show. 

7. Best Product Placement - Peppermint Field Black Inhaler. I know it seems like the bread is a shoo-in here, but hear me out. Black Inhaler was willing to let their product be used during illegal underground fighting and public sex. The Bread is great but it can’t compare to that.

8. Best Facial Feature -Vegas’ smirk

10. Best Use of A BL Trope -  Spongebath. Using this comedically as a deliberate seduction technique, basically acknowledging that it’s kind of ridiculous, works very well, letting Porsche’s goofball side and Kinn’s clueless side really shine. It also lets their uncontrolled horniness and Porsche’s ass shine -right in front of Pete’s salad eventually, but oh well. 

Runner Up(s) - Baby is a clumsy bunny(which I think is what @absolutebl calls it, I couldn’t find the exact post)  -the show uses Porsche’s literal tripping as a foreshadowing of his figurative trip up, showing that while he can talk the talk of a bodyguard i.e. ... wear the snazzy suit, he can’t yet walk the walk. He proves that by his behavior on his first bodyguard gig. 

Singing - Can I say that @AbsoluteBL’s hatred of this trope makes me giggle because my mother hates singing so much that I had to verbalize an SNL musical sketch to her instead of letting her watch it? Anyway, this one is pretty obvious, but still notable because they didn’t just let Jeff, Mile, and Barcode show off their pipes. They wove music in as a subplot that allowed it to stand as a character marker for not just Kim, but Chay and Kinn. I feel like “Between Us” scarred me for life with bad singing awkwardly shoved into the plot for no reason, so KP gets so much love from me for this. 

Bonus: Best Hype Man 

Seriously, this guy is more excited than Gun about this coup attempt. He has been waiting years for this. And now my head-canon is that he used to work for the main family and when he was injured in the line of duty, Korn tossed him out and Gun took him in for spite and he’s nurtured a seething hatred for Korn since then. 

Bonus: Sexiest Gesture - Kinn’s finger come hither.

BOT2024: Jr. Exile vs. Neo Exile exchanges

In the lead up to BOT2024, they are releasing profiles for each member and one question is "What Jr.Exile/Neo Exile group would you want to join for a week?" @banqanas suggested that someone make it into a chart and I am nothing if not a glutton for punishment, so.

There are more charts below, breaking it into smaller sections. Below the cut so no one kills me for flooding their dash with this 🤣 Comparisons by group and some extras I found amusing.

Quick note - I stuck with the officially assigned colors off of the profiles for most groups, except BBZ and LIL. Originally, BBZ was orange and LIL was a slightly different shade of red from WHH, but. No one got blue and they gave me two shades of red and I just refused 😂 So I changed BBZ to blue and LIL to orange.

RMPG has the singlest large clump of 'members choosing the same group', with Riku, Shohei and Itsuki all choosing BBZ. Kaisei ignored the spirit of the question and answered RMPG, so there's a small 'lol' between his name and the arrow because it amuses me.

I decided to look at how many members stayed within their subgroup - so how many Jr.Exile members chose other Jr.Exile groups, how many Neo Exile members chose other Neo Exile groups.

Of 20 Jr.Exile members so far, 8 chose to stay in Jr.Exile, so 40% stayed within their subgroup. (RMPG accounted for more than half of those - Riku, Itsuki, Shohei, Kaisei and Kenta all chose fellow Jr.Exile groups, with Masa, Ren and Jimmy rounding out the last 4 places. Notably, no one in FANTA chose a fellow Jr.Exile group)

Of 14 Neo Exile member so far, 4 chose to stay in Neo Exile, so 28.5% stayed within their subgroup. (TJBB accounts for 3 - Nosuke, Shigetora and Takumi - with Matora rounding out as the fourth)

You know, I think it's a shame that in light of Build stepping down from BOC, people are missing the silver lining that Daemi will no longer have any further association with KP.

Sure, an actor a lot of people liked is gone. But so are two authors who dead-ass dedicated an entire chapter to Kinn violently tearing Porsche's asshole open, and built Vegas and Pete's entire relationship on an assault that makes what went down in the series look like a middle aged married couple awkwardly trying to roleplay a scene from the edited for network TV version of 50 Shades of Grey.

I'd also ask that people remember Thailand is very much a part of southeast Asia that's making a real effort to modernize, and move away from some of the toxic conservative and frankly backwards attitudes that can be prevalent in this region. BOC is doing a lot of good in this regard, because the fact yaoi exists, and that the industry uses these tropes speaks to an interpretation of queer culture built on viewing and translating it through a socially conservative lens. It's Asian society going 'these couples can't possibly be like us, so they must be like this' and then just sexing those tropes up to 10. BOC is out here doing the lord's work introducing all these thirsty women in their early 20's to masc for masc, but I digress.

I think people would be a lot happier if they went into BL prepared for growing pains like this. Actors were openly homophobic until just a few short years ago. A lot of them got into BL for easy money or to break into the industry, and weaponized homophobia to protect their reputations and make sure they could get work outside the BL industry. There really wasn't much of a bar for who studios were willing to sign. People should be glad the industry has started to weed this behavior out and grow up. It's a good thing. I'm bummed out about what happened to Build, I liked him, but I'm excited for the social turn Thailand is taking. Because I find it hard to believe Thai fans would have even given a fuck ten years ago. Just look how Apo was treated.

Had to edit that last post bc I forgot my actual thesis, but Togashi does use elements of character design such as: clothing, features, as visual shorthand for a character's state of mind. It's my favorite thing and I love how "inconsistent character design" has literary meaning in his work. I always wanna see the panel of Yorknew arc where Chrollo is drawn in a realistic manner, thick ink and shading, and KP (choking him out in the chains) is drawn in thin lines, 0 shading, 100% Anime character lmao. But I definitely view the bandanna on or off as something that provides insight into Chrollo's actual current state of mind, as inconsistent and out of touch with his own head as the character might seem, and there is an internal logic to it.
