Ginathon Episodes: Episode 215
Roy Stafford attends the station to see Gina, making a complaint that Gabriel attacked him the night before. Gina restricts Gabriel to station duties and launches an investigation, happy she might finally be able to get rid of him. "Do you think he did it?" Jonathan asks, after Gabriel leaves to write up his statement. "Jonathan! Is there... something you wanted?" "Depends what you're offering. " They share a smile and are about to continue flirting before Adam knocks and interrupts, asking Gina to come to his office for a chat.
Jack has made a deal with Gina. He can have several uniform officers as backup for the diamond raid that DI Cavanaugh and DI Manson are heading up (with Neil suspicious of Peter) in exchange for a CID Sgt. That Sgt is Phil and he's not happy to be sent to the Cole Lane Estate to investigate the attack on 'That Nonce!?!" Roy Stafford.

Unfortunately for Gina, Laura Bryant , an Estate resident involved in Gabriel's vigilante revenge on Stafford (yep, that Laura Bryant) gives him an alibi for the time of the attack. Gina is forced to drop the investigation though reminds him she knows what he's like. Unfortunately he knows about Gina's drink driving (as unknowing as it was) being hushed up by Smithy and Gary and that she also received 'Gabriel's' confidential information under false pretences when she was looking into his background. "I'd say let sleeping dogs lie, wouldn't you?" "I let nothing lie, PC Kent."

Gabriel thanks Laura for her statement and support and learns of a new problem. A loan shark is threatening his clients if they don't pay when he demands. Laura gives him a statement that he takes to Jonathan. Jonathan tells him it's a good statement, however he'll still need victims to come forward to build a case. Gabriel says they're all too scared to come forward and he thought Jonathan was supposed to be on their side. Jonathan says he heard what happened with Stafford and that they can't all apply his methods of 'policing'. Gabriel insists he was with Laura at the time and Jonathan just smiles. "Do you think Inspector Gold believes that?" "I don't have to answer to you!" Gabriel insists, marching out. Jonathan goes to Gina and tells her what happened and admits that he doesn't trust Gabriel. Gina tells him that she agrees but she has to run the relief and if he is out there confronting her officers it undermines her authority.
Jonathan: "I think we can remain professional. " Gina: "Professional? Am I anything but?" Jonathan: [shakes his head] "No." Gina: "I don't believe this, one silly kiss and you think you know me!" Jonathan: "I think I knew you pretty well before then." Gina: "For your information, what happened between us earlier was nothing so stop behaving like a teenager and start behaving like a half decent lawyer!"

Laura shows Gabriel what happens when the loan shark 'punishes' his victims and warns him he'll return tomorrow to do worse. She asks him how the legitimate investigation is going and threatens to take back her statement if he doesn't help. He promises he will and has an 'informal chat' with the loan shark who threatens Laura in front of Gabriel. Gabriel orders him to leave the estate. The loan shark laughs and tells Gabriel he's going nowhere, stubbing a cigarette out on Laura's carpet. Gabriel nods to Laura who lets in a group of masked men who assault the loan shark. When Gabriel returns, the loan shark agrees to leave the Estate. Laura asks Gabriel to be the Estate's guardian angel and promises the Estate will support him after everything he's done in 2 days to rid them of undesirables.
Jonathan pays Gina a visit to ask how the interviews went for the diamond heist and - without asking or waiting for a reply - tells Gina he's booked them a table to have dinner that night, 8pm. Gina doesn't look convinced.

Later, as Jonathan locks his office, Gina appears in her doorway.
Gina: "Well you've got a nerve, presuming I want to go out with you tonight, you don't even know if I like Thai food." Jonathan: "You look like a woman who does. Shall I take that as a yes?" Gina: "Look Jonathan, I'm not sure about this..." Jonathan: "Gina, listen. We're both old enough to know if you want something in life you should just go for it. Don't make a big song and dance. I'll pick you up at 7.30."

The song is based on the Ukrainian folk chant "Shchedryk", also known as the "Bell Carol".
Performed by LIBERA, from the 2019 album ‘Christmas Carols with Libera' Conductor - Robert Prizeman Music - M Leontovych Arranged - Robert Prizeman Soloist - Luca Brugnoli
Filmed at St Augustine’s Church, Kilburn Video director - Emyr Afan Video editor - Scott Jaeger
Every time You'll hear "Carol of the bells" this year, pleaey keep in mind that Mykola Leontovych was killed by russians on 23rd of January 1921. 101 years later russians still are killing Ukrainians.
“Shchedryk” was arranged by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych at the beginning of the 20th century. The song is based on the traditional Ukrainian folk chant welcoming the New Year (“shchedrivka”). In 1921, the Ukrainian National Chorus sung the song in the United States to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall. Later, Peter J. Wilhousky rearranged the melody for orchestra and wrote the new lyrics in English thus creating “Carol of the Bells”. The original “Shchedryk” by Leontovych was intended to be sung a cappella by mixed four-voice choir.

Note
Do you have favorite tropes that are hr specific?
ooh good question.
Purposeful ruination: It gets the plot moving and I do like this variation on the enemies-to-lovers trope.
Books with this trope: Marquess of Mayhem by Scarlett Scott (he purposely compromises her with the aim of fucking with her war criminal half brother EL CORAZON OSCURO who does get a book of his own), Beyond Scandal and Desire by Lorraine Heath (compromises her to get to his half-brother who is engaged to her), The Chief by Monica McCarty (she gets herself compromised on purpose), Secrets of a Summer Night by Lisa Kleypas (heroine and her friends scheme to engineer a compromise)
Lower-class hero (or a hero of lower-class origins) who hates himself because he thinks he isn't "worthy" of the heroine or whatever and will SULLY her with his FILTHY PAWS
Heroes/books with this trope: Nicholas in Her Husband's Harlot by Grace Callaway, Rhys Winterborne in Marrying Winterborne by Lisa Kleypas, McKenna in Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas, Dom Kilburn in A Rogue's Rules for Seduction by Eva Leigh
The Repressed Aristocrat: A gentleman in the streets, a freak in the sheets— to clarify, he's either actually repressed, or acts like he is in public.
Heroes/books with this trope: Granby from The Design of Dukes by Kathleen Ayers, Stone from Always Be My Duchess by Amalie Howard, Lockwood from The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe, Harrison from The Truth About Cads and Dukes by Elisa Braden, Westcliff from It Happened One Autumn (how repressed he actually is is debatable but I'm basing this off his "once a week is enough" thing), Carlisle from The Viscount Always Knocks Twice by Grace Callaway
A Knowing Virgin: If she has to be a virgin, then let her be a knowing one. It could be because he had An Education of sorts, or maybe she just has a "natural sensuality" that's inevitably commented upon by the hero. Ultimately, if she breaks the hero simply by performing a middling handjob, she's a winner.
Heroines/Books with this trope: Jess from Lord of Scoundrels by Loretta Chase, Rosalind from A Recipe for a Rogue by Kathleen Ayers (her late rake dad left behind a bunch of dirty books), basically every Grace Callaway heroine who inevitably performs her first blowjob like a champ
Kidnapping: I don't care who does it but if an author writes it well enough I'll love them.
Books with this trope: Outrageous by Minerva Spencer (the heroine kidnaps the hero to make him stop harassing/kidnapping her brother and his wife), The Last Crimes of Peregrine Hinds (m/m, he's soooo down to be kidnapped), Lord Holt Takes a Bride by Vivienne Lorret (her besties kidnap him), The Lady Who Came in from the Cold by Grace Callaway (listen, she needs to set her husband straight somehow), and of course, It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas.
An immediate, aggressive proposition: When you know, you know, plus again, it moves the romance along
Books with this trope: Surrender to the Devil by Lorraine Heath, I'm pretty? sure The Theory of Earls by Kathleen Ayers has this
Workplace relationships: This might be the one where my feelings differ the most in that my bar is a lot lower in HR than contemporaries (or alternatively, if it's well written, I'll read anything). But idk I'm more fine with powerful men "taking advantage" of The Help in historical than in contemporaries. This is what happens when The Sound of Music imprinted on you early, I think.
Books with this trope: Duke of Depravity by Scarlett Scott, The Duchess Hunt by Lorraine Heath, The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt, A Nobleman's Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by K-J Charles, Married by Morning by Lisa Kleypas, Millionaire Marquess by Scarlett Scott
Age gap romances: I just really like these and it goes both ways (I'm forever looking for well-done older women romances)
Books with this trope: The Chasing of Eleanor Vane by Sierra Simone (he's her betrothed's uncle), Wicked Again by Kathleen Ayers (she's 49, he's 40), My Dirty Duke by Joanna Shupe (he's her dad's best friend), What I Did For a Duke by Julie Anne Long (hero is around 20 years older than the heroine), A Recipe for a Rogue by Kathleen Ayers (he's like twice? her age?)
Childhood sweethearts: I just really like the idea of people finding love young but Things keep them apart (maybe it's the Persuasion lover in me). I distinguish it from one party having a childhood crush on the other because that's unrequited and this... very much isn't.
Books with this trope: Again the Magic by Lisa Kleypas, The Legend of Lyon Redmond by Julie Anne Long, Bed Me, Baron by Felicity Niven (okay so they weren't "together" but they had feelings for each other at different points during their youth)
More niche tropes:
That thing where they're having hate/farewell sex but they know she's gonna end up pregnant anyway (ex: Bed Me, Baron by Felicity Niven)
A deranged blond man (ex: Valentine from Duke of Sin by Elizabeth Hoyt, Godric from Outrageous by Minerva Spencer, Nikolas from Prince of Dreams by Lisa Kleypas)
Heroines with objectively dumb schemes and plenty of hubris (ex: Constance in The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham Lillian Bowman in Secrets of a Summer Night and It Happened One Autumn, Margo and Matilda Halifax in Alexandra Vasti's Halifax Hellion series, Emma Kent in The Duke Who Knew Too Much by Grace Callaway)
Taking about their first sexual experiences..... while having sex (ex: The Rogue Not Taken and Bombshell by Sarah MacLean)
Characters getting turned on via music/instrumental playing (ex: both The Theory of Earls by Kathleen Ayers and M Is For Marquess by Grace Callaway have heroes who deffo get hard watching their heroines play the piano, and there is piano sex stuff, and Always Be My Duchess has a cello-playing duke who also plays her like a cello)
Sad old people (possibly reuniting)
That thing where there's a hot older person living their best life in the background and I frantically look them up on the interwebs to see if they have a book and am usually disappointed that they don't :(

To Serve, Protect & ....Target
To Serve, Protect & ….Target
In this post, I’m going to minimize my commentary. I want to put SRSO & Scott Haines’s lies on display. Also, some of the excerpts in here are part of writ of mandamus filed by Marie Mattox’s firm on behalf of Matt Groelinger. This writ was filed in response to the games the public records folks played when records about Scott were requested. I have experienced mild games, such as constantly…

Total Eclipse of My Art by Bonnie Tyler (EP - 1984)
Tumblr media
The story of how mega-selling Welsh chanteuse, Bonnie Tyler, came to record a bizarre EP of Goth covers hinges upon the influence of Invented Records founder, Max Scratch.
This South London Svengali, equal parts Andrew Loog Oldham and Nosferatu, had a misfiring genius for pulling people into his vainglorious, chemically-driven visions and then completely fucking up their execution.
He genuinely loved nurturing leftfield talent – often willing to make a bet on the next big thing based on one gig in a dingey pub. Those bets were almost always completely wrong, as is evidenced by the continuing irrelevance of the Invented Records back-catalogue.
However disastrous his navigation of the music business, Max had two things that meant he was the most connected man in the British music scene during the 1980s: a seemingly never-ending supply of primo-grade narcotics – and copious amounts of blackmail material.
Some have described him as a gangster, but only after he disappeared whilst holidaying in Thanet during the summer of 1997.
Scratch’s base of operations during the 1980s was his Croydon nightclub, ‘Das Boot’. I’ll no doubt cover the tawdry history of this concrete sonic bunker at some point, but all you need to know for the purposes of this post is that on one star-crossed sweltering Saturday night in July 1984, Bonnie Tyler, Wayne Hussey of the Sisters of Mercy and Ian Astbury of The Cult were all sharing a booth in the Das Boot VIP lounge, hosted by the loquacious Invented Records impresario.
Tyler was an international megastar at the time, but her new single ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ was barely registered on the charts (though it would go to number 2 the following year). She was in London to promote the single, but felt it wasn’t her best work after the Wagnerian grandeur of her previous collaborations with Jim Steinman. She was looking for a new musical direction and, surprisingly, was a big fan of the rapidly evolving Goth genre. “I loved Bauhaus, Birthday Party, but especially the Sisters. I was handed a tape of their music by Duncan Kilburn from the Psychedelic Furs,” she later revealed in an interview. “I was recording in LA and the Furs were in the studio next door. Duncan was wearing a Merciful Release T-shirt and that got us talking. I listened to the tape repeatedly whenever I got a moment. It was so dark and raw – miles from the polished fluff I felt I was recording at the time.”
Having floated into Tyler’s circle via his acquaintance with her manager, Ronnie Scott, Scratch invited her down to Das Boot without knowing any of this.
The Sisters of Mercy had just finished recording their first album, ‘First and Last and Always’, but Hussey was increasingly estranged from Sisters lead singer, Andrew Eldritch, before the album had even been released. He came to Das Boot to discuss moving to Invented Records with a newly configured band.
Finally, Astbury of The Cult had turned up because he was shit-faced after a gig promoting recently released album, Dreamtime. He knew Scratch was good for cheap amphetamines.
In the booth that night, Tyler hit it off with both men, and, ever attuned to the main chance, Scratch offered to take them all to the Invented studio above the club for a jam session.
Pulling in a few random musicians from the darker corners of Das Boot, Scratch acted as engineer himself, as Tyler recorded some very rough one-take tracks with Hussey on lead guitar, and Astbury on percussion and backing vocals.
“It was amazing how great her voice was – she just kept belting out these amazing vocals, despite the epic intake of tequila and cigarettes,” Hussey said.
As dawn reluctantly illuminated Croydon’s cut-price imitation of the Manhattan skyline, Tyler was tracked down by her management and whisked into a limo. Perhaps, once sober, she realised that Goth wasn’t her future. Perhaps, fearing for their income stream, Ronnie Scott and Steve Wolfe persuaded her to drop the idea.
Either way, Bonnie Tyler continued in an increasingly mainstream musical direction. Even if she had any memory of that crazy Croydon night, it was quickly forgotten due to the whirlwind of touring commitments.
However, Scratch had not forgotten. Four of the tracks from that funereal jam session to would eventually surface on the EP, ‘Total Eclipse of My Art’, released by Invented in October 1984.

Mick Tucker (17 July 1947 – 14 February 2002) was the #drummer and backing #vocalist of the #rock band, The Sweet. He was a founding member of the band “Sweetshop” in January 1968 along with Steve Priest, Brian Connolly, and Frank Torpey (b. 30 April 1947, Kilburn, North West London), who was later replaced by Mick Stewart who was himself succeeded by Andy Scott. “Sweetshop” was shortened to “The Sweet” in 1968. From 1973 Tucker used a large Ludwig drum kit, comprising two bass drums, three mounted tom-toms and two floor toms, complimented by Paiste cymbals. On an objective view he was a very talented drummer with a range of complex rhythms who could have helped any band considerably. The glam rock image of Sweet sometimes eclipsed this.

This is the fifth in my new series of blogs, telling the life stories of my 2 x Great Grand parents and next up is Joseph Keyes, the ninth child of eleven children, born to Joseph Keyes (Senior) and Hannah (Anna) Maria King.
Joseph Keyes was born 12th January 1852 in Prittlewell, Essex and he was baptised on 8th February 1852 at St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church, Prittlewell, in Essex. The families residence at the time is stated as being in Prittlewell and Joseph’s Father, Joseph Senior, is listed as a Labourer.

(St Mary the Virgin Church, Prittlewell)
1861 Census
The first record that we find young Joseph on, after his birth, is the 1861 Census and here we find Joseph, aged 9, listed as a scholar and living at home with both his parents and five of his siblings, George aged 17, Emma aged 14, Anna Maria aged 11, Ellen Betsy aged 7 and Sarah Ann aged 4. The family home is East Street in Prittlewell.
(Images of East Street, Prittlewell kindly supplied by Hilary Scott)
1871 Census
By the time of the 1871 Census, Joseph Keyes has left school and is employed as an Agricultural Labourer, which is noted in the census details for the family. He is still living at home with the family, still in East Street, Prittlewell, at home are both his parents, Jospeh Senior and Ann Keyes, but all of his siblings have moved away from the family home, so to utilise the extra space in the family home, Joseph Senior has taken in three boarders, who are also counted on the 1871 Census.
Between 1871 and 1881, our Joseph meets his bride to be, Elizabeth Bishop and they marry on 17th October 1874 at the Grays Parish Church (actually in the Church that I myself was baptised in!).

(Grays Parish Church)
Joseph is listed as a Bachelor and Labourer and his place of residence is listed as Grays Thurrock.

On 9th September 1875, Joseph and Elizabeth have their first child, my Great-grandmother, Caroline Rosina Keyes and at the time of her birth, Joseph was employed as a Plate Layer for the Railways, which had just started to reach the outlying County of Essex.
There a couple of links here that give an insight into the role of a Plate Layer and the type of work that this involved.

1881 Census
By the time of the 1881 Census, Joseph Keyes and his Wife Elizabeth are living at 18, Chapel Row, Grays in Essex and by this time they have three children, Caroline Rosina (My Great-Grandmother) aged 5, Clara Elizabeth aged 3, and William Henry aged 1. Joseph’s occupation is a Labourer at the Cement Works which was a large Employer at the time, it was one of the major industries in Thurrock. Joseph’s future son-in-law, William Chiddicks was to also be employed in the Cement Industry in Grays.
The following images were kindly donated by Dylan Moore from his wonderful historic site of cement kiln works in the UK.
  Cement Kilns UK Website
The landscape of Thurrock was an ideal ground for the Cement Industry, one of the key ingredients in the mass production of Portland Cement, being Chalk, which was abundantly available in Thurrock. Mass excavations of Chalk Quarries blighted the landscape of Thurrock, as Industry thrived during the period at the turn of the 19th Century.
In the early years of the 20th Century, the banks of The River Thames, between Purfleet and Grays, were lined with wharves, cement works and lime kilns. Beyond the banks was a stark industrial landscape of quarries, tall chimneys, railways tracks and rolling stock. The Wouldham Cement Company alone, had five massive chimneys that were an unmistakable landmark along the River.
Between the two centuries, after the invention of Portland Cement, with the ready availability of chalk, Thurrock became an ideal location for Cement Works and Company after Company set up their businesses in Thurrock and they became one of the biggest employers in the area at that time.
1891 Census
The next record that we find for Joseph Keyes is the 1891 Census and the family have moved to 26, Prospect Row, in Grays and Joseph is living at home with his Wife Elizabeth and five children, Caroline Rosina aged 15, William Henry aged 11, Albert George aged 6, Rose Amelia aged 5 and Alice Maud aged 4. Jospeh’s occupation is listed as a Labourer Cement Works.
1901 Census
Between 1891 and 1901, Joseph and Elizabeth have two more children, Harry Joseph Keyes born in 1891 and Bertie James Keyes born in 1896 and the family are still living at 26, Prospect Place in Grays, with six of their children still living at home. Joseph’s occupation is still  a Labourer in the Cement works.
1911 Census
By 1911 Joseph and his family have moved to 57, Stanley Road in Grays and Joseph’s occupation has changed slightly as he is now listed as a Night Watchman at the Cement works. Jospeh is at home with his Wife Elizabeth and their four Sons, one of whom, Harry Joseph Keyes is following in his Father’s footsteps and working as a Cement Labourer.
The advent of The First World War was just around the corner for Joseph and his family and like millions of other families across the Country the Keyes family felt the full consequences of War. Three of the Keyes boys went off to War, but sadly only two of the boys returned. Albert George Keyes served with the 2/8th Essex Cyclists and survived the War, Bertie James Keyes was in the RAF and survived the War, but sadly Harry Joseph Keyes lost his life at Passchendaele (3rd Battle of Ypres) on 9th October 1917. One can never imagine the impact that the loss of a Son would have on a family and the consequences, but less than one month later, Joseph’s wife Elizabeth was to sadly pass away. So within one Month Joseph was to lose a Son to the ravages of War followed so soon by his own Wife.
Harry Joseph’s War story can be found Here
Six years after the Death of his Wife,  Joseph Keyes sadly passed away himself, on 20th November 1923, at the age of 71.
Tumblr media
He died from Senile Decay and Bronchitis and was listed as living at 37, Hartland Road, Willesden, in Kilburn, London. Present at his Death was his Son Bertie James Keyes of 7, Sherfield Road, Grays, Essex. Joseph is buried at Buried at Grays New Cemetery, Grave Number 1056, Section 3.
