Can you please elaborate on the Kingdom hearts Sonic au? I want to hear more of your ideas!

Ah, I would love to! I apologize it's taken be a bit to get to this ask, anon, but I need you to know that it made my day when I got it🥺❤️

Okay, so as I mentioned in this post, it starts out with Sora and Riku being Sonic and Tails respectively. I must confess that this au is more or less an excuse to microwave in my brain scenes of Sonic and Tails taking the place of Sora and Riku in certain Soriku moments™, so it’s not fully fleshed out yet 😂😅

But! I'd be happy to share some of my au thoughts/plans (under the cut) with you, anon😊

Character Placements

Though I haven't fully figured everything out yet, I have figured out certain character placements and ages. The following are those that I have planned already:

Sora – Sonic (Age 16 as of kh1)

Riku – Tails (Age 15 as of kh1)

Kairi – Sally (Age 15 as of kh1)

Naminé – Elias (Age 16 (physically)/Age 1 (chronologically) as of kh2)

Roxas – Shadow (Age 17 (physically)/Age 1 (chronologically) as of kh2)

Xion – Surge (Age 17 (physically)/Age 1 (chronologically) as of kh2)

General AU notes

The following are misc notes about the au, my intentions/choices with it, and disclaimers of a sort:

Canon events from kh are subject to change, just based upon the personalities and motivations of the Sonic characters put in specific positions. I do not know how divergent this will be yet, but it will be divergent.

The FF and Disney characters/worlds will still be present, I just cannot promise the exact worlds or their order will stay the same as in the original. Because Sonic doesn't line up 1 to 1 with Sora, logically the worlds are going to have differing themes overall comparatively.

Just because I placed a certain Sonic character as a certain KH character does not mean this Sonic character is gonna line up 1 to 1 with them. I'm hoping to balance making them reminiscent of their kh counterparts in ways while also distinctly making them them. So some characters will be more like they are canonically, shifting the narrative accordingly, and others will be more shaped by their placement in the narrative.

I love kh so much but as I am not constrained by audience or by corporate choices there will be some specific personal changes for this au. An example of this is that the characters taking the places of Ven, Terra, and Aqua will likely be aging rather than staying the same ages (assuming they end up in similar placements).

I think if you've read this far in the post you already know, but I should make clear that this au is just as much about crafting a Sonic with the Sonic characters within the kh story as it is about Sontails. This is not to say that the entire focus of this au at all times is Sontails, but (much like Sora and Riku's relationship in kh) it is very much baked into the core of it.

Sadly, I am still yet undecided whether the Sonic characters should remain as Mobian, but I am leaning towards keeping them mobian at this time.

Now, while canon Sonic is a special hedgehog, there's just something a bit interesting about "just a guy" Sonic to me. In this case, someone who is not inherently born to be some chosen one. In this au, he isn't the fastest thing alive, but he does have some natural speed, making him naturally fast compared to some peers. It's a skill that can be improved with practice, but it’s nothing supernatural

Au Ideas

The following are some of the ideas I've been spinning in my head since this au's conception, meaning it's a mix of things that could be in the proper au, will not be in the proper au, will not go the same way in this au, or ideas that could still make their way in in some form:

Knuckles (as Terra) bequeathing the keyblade to Tails (as Riku):

Tails is also a bit more cautious of Knuckles and is less confident in his presentation of himself compared to how Riku was, but he ultimately can't contain his curiosity and approaches Knuckles.

Originally, I imagined this scene simply with the characters in the au filling it out, not considering exactly how this scene would play out in the context of this au. So it's fairly close to the original scene. It starts out with Sonic the Hedgehog, 6 years old, and Tails the Fox, 5 years old. His uncle takes him and Tails out to what he and his friends will later dub "the play island". The hedgehog and fox have known each other practically their whole lives, and they go to the play island together as often as they can (after all, Sonic’s uncle can't take them all the time).

Aside from the obvious differences in how characters speak and hold themselves, I imagined Sonic running ahead while Tails lags behind around the time he notices Knuckles at the shore. While I imagine Sora did this either because it took a moment to notice or because he was excited he was beating Riku in the race (or a mix of both), Sonic does slow down briefly (when he realizes Tails is no longer running). However, his philosophy is that even though it's "no fun" if Tails isn't trying too, he's not gonna just slow his role or stop the race just cause Tails is moving so slow. Perhaps there's also some part of him who thinks that Tails will pick up the pace if Tails sees him ahead.

Like Riku at this time, Tails wants to become stronger. He wants to be cool and strong like Sonic, and strong like that one person who he heard left for other worlds and found strength there. However, Tails doesn't simply want to be strong like Sonic. He wants to be strong enough to protect the things that matter in the same way Sonic can.

What I'm trying to say is that despite not yet being able to put the words to it or to explain all that he feels and wants to do, Tails is just starting to become frustrated with the state of things. So wanting to be strong and wanting to be like Sonic and admitting he has things he'd like to protect is...only the beginning of his growth.

And so Knuckles bequeaths the keyblade to Tails not only because of the great light he sees within him, but because of his conviction. Tails is only a kid, but Knuckles can see how genuinely serious he is about his wishes to become stronger and to "protect the things that matter". Knuckles cannot only relate, but can respect this.

??? (as Aqua), telling Sonic (as Sora) to take care of Tails.

This is another one I'm not sure will go the same way in the proper au, but I have had semi-vivid imaginings of my Aqua stand in saying something akin to canon Aqua's speech, only for Sonic to be all "Pfff of course I will!" like there's no question he'd stick by Tails and watch out for him and that it's laughable ??? (Aqua) even said that the way they did.

In canon, it was definitely sweet when Sora was like "Of course I like him! He's my best friend!", and I don't doubt that Sonic could admit he likes Tails at this point, but he is still Sonic. Which...pretty much means that he's going to be at least a bit rude in this interaction and not fully take it seriously😂

Meanwhile Tails probably feels nice about Sonic admitting or implying in some form that he likes having him around.

The necklace theory

Because of Sonic and Tails' placements and ages, things cannot just play out as we theorize they do in canon. Or, to elaborate, it's unlikely that the way this would progress in this au would be Sonic crying about shooting stars hitting the islands and Tails proclaiming he'd protect him. Rather, I think I have some ideas drawing from some of Naminé's fake memories.

My main idea is that after a particularly scary thunderstorm (while Sonic and Tails are sleeping over on the play island), the two happen to be present for a meteor shower just afterwards. Tails is still shaken from the thunderstorm, and so Sonic attempts to make him smile (both because Tails is watching something he'd doubtless find beautiful or fascinating usually without any enjoyment, because Tails being sad makes him uncomfortable because he doesn't know how to handle it, and to sort of fill the silence so to speak). He stands up on the paopu tree as the stars fall and begins to talk "what ifs" aloud about the stars.

And so Sonic starts talking about what he'd do if the shooting stars hit the islands, confidently talking about how he'd knock them back and fend them off with his wooden sword. And then as he goes off about what ifs (like "what if the stars were actually spaceships and 'aliens' were to attack", and stuff like that), about how he can defeat anything that comes his way (all showing off and talking himself up), he ends by telling Tails that he doesn't have to worry about anything like that, because he (Sonic) would handle it.

And so Tails (who's begun to calm down and has uttered a laugh a few times over these last minutes), asks Sonic semi-seriously and semi-jokingly what he would do and how he would handle it if shooting stars hit the islands and they began to sink.

To answer, Sonic starts by going off about how it's impossible because (again) he'd totally fend off those shooting stars, but in the impossible and highly unlikely instance this turns out to happen...

Sonic turns his head, shooting a smile down at Tails, as he admits (all matter of factly) that of course Tails would be there.

Even if the islands began to sink, he could trust that Tails would be there to hold onto him, to keep them both above water

This causes Tails to smile too. Perhaps in his heart he's conflicted, emotions both positive and negative and confusing are swirling within his heart, but he knows it makes him happy that Sonic trusts in what is true (that Tails always plans to be there with him, and to do what he can to help him). In this moment, his heart beams, no matter his confusing feelings.

And then, perhaps, as Sonic sleeps and Tails lies awake after the meteor shower, as Tails ruminates on this all, he wishes more than ever that he could be as confident as Sonic was. He wishes more than ever that he could confidently protect Sonic the way Sonic does for him.

He knows that he's not there yet, that he isn't like Sonic, but he makes an oath to them both in the silence of the night.

Sonic knows (or should know by now) of the charm Tails always keeps in his pockets. It was something he's had since he was a young kit, and it's always been his good luck charm. It's importance to him cannot be overstated.

As Sonic sleeps, Tails loops his good luck charm around his neck, clasps it end to end, turns it into a necklace. He makes an oath to become stronger, to become Sonic's equal, to become strong enough to keep Sonic safe also, and he prays that until he can fulfill this oath, his good luck charm may keep Sonic safe for him.

Sonic is confused to find it looped around his neck when he wakes up, but when he expresses his confusion (essentially "why would Tails give me this thing that's so precious to him he wears"), Tails doesn't elaborate much. He only insists that it's a gift, that it's Sonic's now.

And so Sonic (not quite understanding) shrugs. After all, who'd deny a gift like that?

But...what makes this particularly special is that Sonic chooses to keep wearing this charm always. I'd like to think that even when others on the islands growing up try to give him trinkets and bracelets and things, confess their feelings with wearable gifts, or anything like that, he refuses to accept or to use them just to spare someone's feelings. So it means something that he becomes unconcerned with the idea of wearing Tails' special charm and just casually wears it always. I think it means a lot, even if Sonic most likely didn't think too hard about why he would turn wearing the thing into a habit.

Tails gave it to him, it's special to Tails, and Sonic seems to like wearing it, so it’s that simple. What reason would he have to give it back to Tails or throw it away?

The Dark Margin Scene

Tails starts out inherently believing in the good in people, but as he grows up, as he watches, and through the events of kh2, he becomes a bit more cynical (sort of like Nine). He wants to believe that everyone has a glimmer of "goodness" so to speak in them more than he truly believes it. And so though Sonic's sense of freedom, his nonchalance, the way he casually inspires people begins to annoy Tails as he progresses to his worst point during KH1 era, he ultimately is jealous of Sonic. He does admit to Sonic that he's jealous during the dark margin scene.

Not just because Sonic was always cooler, stronger, and just out of reach, but because Sonic can be so carefree in following his heart.

As annoying as it can be and as it was during those past moments, he envies how Sonic is able to take on anything that comes his way even when he seems to not be taking those things seriously. And while not meant to be an insult here, he sometimes envies that Sonic doesn’t quite think very much. He envies the way Sonic can just do things without being trapped in his own head.

Idk honestly I just think a lot about this piece.

I'd like to think that (like with Riku), Tails' desire to have the ability to protect Sonic sort of becomes warped first by his desperation for Sonic to need him to keep him around as a constant, and then warped further during kh1 era as he becomes so desperate to have the strength he desired that he simply needs to prove he's stronger than Sonic. I can definitely see this leading to moments between kh1 and kh2 where Tails does sort of have an act of being better than Sonic in certain moments, so it would be humbling for him to admit here that while there was a time he'd thought himself better than Sonic, ultimately he has always admired and envied him.

The end of DDD

While in canon there are many times Sonic saves Tails, I do think it's funny to imagine Tails saving Sonic in a big way this time around (saving Sonic from becoming a vessel). And while it logically wouldn't go the exact way as in kh canon, I do think it would be cute if Tails is just glad to see Sonic alive but bewildered by Sonic's excitement over him finally being awake. I also just like the thought of DDD/KH3 era Tails finally achieving his goal and filling the role of partner for Sonic rather than side kick

The child of destiny vs the regular kid turned hero

As I mentioned earlier, while he does have natural speed, I did want Sonic and Tails to fit a similar dichotomy to Sora and Riku when thinking up this au. While all in all they're both special in canon, Sonic is very often upheld as this hero who performs feats no one else can, making him stand out against others. And so what I aim to do here (partially for my own amusement) is to present a Sonic who is just a kid who has his own talents. Sure he's admired and he's faster than the bulk of his peers, but he's ultimately just a regular kid. But because he's the guy everyone expects to be a special hero while everyone expects to see Tails by his side as the sidekick, I love the idea of Tails being the one who's not like the other kids (who's possibly a different being they cannot imagine). Even if he doesn't seem like the hero, Tails as the child of destiny, the one projected to be a force of nature one day.

And so I think it hits harder (since Sonic has more "protagonist energy" so to speak) with the reveal that none of these things he gained were meant to be his. Sonic isn't a chosen hero, he just so happened to inherit the keyblade from Tails. He stepped into a hero's role that was likely not designed or destined to be his.

But like with Sora, he doesn't simply have all the things he does only because he inherited it from someone else (the idea of not actually having anything by his own merit), he actually works to grow and become stronger.

Idk something interesting to me about Tails being "the true chosen one" while Sonic is just some kid

Some first meeting musings

The following were some of the first words I wrote for this post:

"Growing up, Tails had always been enamored by Sonic. He'd taken to following the hedgehog around, even as Sonic avoided making connections with anyone else on the islands and tended to run ahead. But then...Tails' presence sort of became an inevitability. Wherever Sonic went, he would follow close behind, one of the only ones ever willing to to keep trying to keep up with him.

And so now they're here. Sonic had never officially said they were friends back then, but Tails liked to believe it anyways. After all, whenever they needed partners in class, Sonic always picked him. Whenever Sonic wanted to go to the play island, he'd take Tails along. Whenever Tails would show up at Sonic's house with some new contraption, Sonic would be excited to see what it did (as long as it wasn't boring of course). He was the only one seemingly allowed to follow Sonic around everywhere, even when the hedgehog was in a particularly bad mood.

So, yeah. Sure, Tails would find out that Sonic could be a jerk, or was a bit vain, but even at Sonic's most bored or annoyed moments, Tails could place solace in the fact that Sonic must consider him something of a friend. He liked his praise and kept no other company but him."

While it would doubtless take some fleshing out and a bit of reworking, I do imagine combining their canonical first meeting with the whole "growing up like normal kids" thing, and I think Tails would already be a bit interested in Sonic to begin with, but I still like the idea of him becoming more enamored after Sonic fends off his bullies.

Sally filling Kairi's role

Just to be clear, it isn't 1 to 1. Sally is going to be more proactive by default, and I don't intend to barely touch upon her existence or to solely make her revolve around Sonic. However, there were a few reasons I originally decided Sally would fill this role.

The first being that I would like to depict a comphet narrative surrounding Sonic and Sally, where they ultimately grow very close, but they're under that societal pressure, believing that the end goal of their relationship can only be as lovers if they intend to still be close, which begins to clash with the reality of the situation. After all of the Sonic media I've consumed, Sally felt to me like the only candidate that Sonic would genuinely like to keep as a close friend, but could still struggle over the true nature of his feelings and the kind of relationship they should have. I can genuinely see him believing he must like her romantically due to their close bond before eventually having to come to the conclusion that he doesn't actually want to change their relationship into a traditionally romantic one. I also feel like she's a good candidate for Tails to become jealous of. I can't really explain why, but I feel this.

The second, but simple set of reasoning is that she is a princess in the canons she appears in and ultimately fancies herself a force of good, so making her the secret princess of heart is funny to me. I also think it will be fun to inflict on her an adversion to change

The third...yeah honestly she was the only female character I felt could fit this position and could be an important person to Sonic growing up while also fitting into my desired narrative

Idk if you can think of a soriku moment I probably stuck Sonic and Tails in those spots and imagined it. Sonic asserting that Tails could never truly hate him or turn against him save me. Sonic and Tails being content just being together, especially now that everyone else is safe save me. Sonic and Tails growing up together as childhood friends save me.

One final idea I came up with for this au that I'll leave you with

As a kid, Tails liked to read stories and fairy-tales of fantastical places, of knights and magic. Of course, everyone wonders what's out there (what other places could possibly exist outside of the islands they grew up on), what one could find if they just set sail one day, but sometimes he'd dreamed he'd be thrust into these types of stories. He'd envied the subject of that local myth (idk somewhere between myth and rumor) who left the islands and found a whole world out there and great strength.

Perhaps Destiny Islands never really felt like home to him—at least, not until he met Sonic. Perhaps, as he grew older and a bit more bitter and he feared losing his place in Sonic's life, he wished again more than anything to leave this place, to see the worlds, and to create a new home with Sonic for the two of them.

highlights of that lost kh animated pilot:

•kairi being like ‘bro you almost hit me please chill’ lol

•interesting that they had kairi be the one to first express curiosity about other worlds, given how it’s very different in canon. in the games she was the one most ok with staying there on destiny islands forever, while riku brought up the subject. and kairi is supposed to know that she’s from another world but not care all that much

•i actually just really loved riku immediately jumping into battle first to try to stop the heartless

•maybe it’s just me but you wouldn’t guess that sora has a reputation as a super kind sweet heroic boy from this. they said no golden child smiley-fying him here he’s a kid he’s full of plenty of mischief and personal desires

•ohhh riku legitimately looked so broken and sad there at the end. ‘sora?? as soon as i touched the lamp i blacked out. y-you believe me right?? sora?’ ohh sir.. ough. i am so sorry about all this. you look so sorry already. and sora looked ANGRY he was like GROWLING. hello i am in tears

Another ramble sorta related: Imagine Riku playing the cello for Sora…..now that’s a nice sight to imagine. He’d be playing some kind of love song and Sora wouldn’t know it and it’s just so,,,sweet and sad. All until they start dating, then Sora finds out that it’s a LOVE song (maybe even about confessing-) and he’s like “OH THAts what it is about?? I love you too :)”. Something around those lines anyways-

And imagine??? Riku took it up as a kid???? As in smol Riku an Sora??? And then he grows up and does what I said above??? Literally??? Nomura please.

And the most important question....what does the darkness smell like? Like I really wanna know (Looking at u Riku 👀)

LOL mysterious late night question anonymous indulging in my hyperfixation? ill TAKE it.

Favorite Game? - a hard tie between the three mainline games (1, 3, 2 in that order) and birth by sleep! i think all the mainlines are totally solid and bbs just has a majority of my favorite tropes/characters

Favorite Character? - The Girls But Aqua ESPECIALLY (kairi is a close 2nd, then in the third tier are all the other ladies.) this doesn't count disney of ff characters who are in a separate tier list.

Thoughts of Darkness and Light? - making the darkness an acutal sentient creature of evil was a mistake and throws any message from the games of "both are necessary actually" into total disarray because, no, actually, darkness is Really Truly Bad and has Been bad Since The Dawn Of Time. i don't like khux. i like some aspects of it but i hate it for what it did to the lore and how it recontextualized darkness. ANYWAY, MY THOUGHTS: the first game made a point to highlight the phrase "the closer you are to light, the greater your shadow becomes", tying these two forces together and holding them in equal standing. that single line frames my interpretation forever; that darkness is a primal and often negative force, but it is often misused by beings that suffer from their own hubris and riku is a good example of what happens when you accept yourself and all your flaws/detractions instead of suppressing/hiding/ignoring them! balance is necessary and i think they should have made a bigger point of aqua and eraqus's negative aspects (aqua tries to MURDER cinderella's stepfamily and eraqus tries to murder ventus) by their adherence to the light and the pressures they put on their loved ones (aqua unintentionally, eraqus very intentionally) to follow the same. something something when you stare at the sun you go blind so light is not always good, etc.

What are some Headcanons? - too many to quantify in a single ask but if you're that curious, by all means, please ask me specifics individually! esp abt characters you yourself may be interested in. granted! youve seen my work you know who i care about most (sorry, boys.) so i may have more for some than others. lol. some do push through in the answer below, tho!

What does the Darkness smell like? - burnt elements, differing from person to person by strength and pleasantness. maleficent (headcanon time!) smells like scorched plantlife with deeply bitter, stinging notes. terra smells like baked earth and clay, clinging and overwhelming but still like home. etc! on that note; only people deeply DEEPLY entrenched in darkness and light can pick up on those scents.

The "Kairi Problem"

Hey guys it's Kairi day I'm gonna go on a long rant about how sad I am that she kinda sucks as a character.

To start I want to say that I absolutely adore Kairi, and that this isn't meant to be me hating on her, because I do really love her as a character (I literally stole her name for heavens sake). I just believe that there are a lot of problems with her character I need to get out of my system.

Ok, let us begin! First off, and the main issue with her for me is her pure reliance on Sora, and how much that really has damaged her character. Kairi is best when she's not around Sora. For instance, her conversations with Lea in KH3 are some of my favorite parts of that game. Their dynamic is so fun, and I wish they had more screentime together because they have the potential to have this sibling relationship that would be so wholesome. Along with her other interactions with characters, she could have such a great friendship with Aqua, seeing as Aqua will be teaching her how to better herself with the keyblade, it would be great to see more of their interactions.

HOWEVER! These are the only 2 meaningful relationships Kairi has outside of Sora. And even then, Sora makes up 80% of her interactions. Not even her and Riku talk much after KH1. They hardly even talk in Melody of Memory, a "Kairi game" where she is hardly playable. Not only that, at the end of that game Riku basically told her that she needs to stay home and let him to do work to find Sora. This to me is a big misstep in the writing for her character.

Kairi has self-confidence issues, one of her battle lines in Re:Mind is literally "please work". She has no faith in her abilities, but so much can be done with that. She can have an arc about believing in yourself and coming into her own and learn to stand beside Sora and Riku, not just letting them protect her.

This is partially due to her lack of screentime. She's never really been the focus of anything, she's just Kairi. The prize. That's really what she is, she's like the princess in another castle. Just "the girl". And that's a terrible thing to do with her character because unlike Peach, the princess in another castle, Kairi doesn't get the chance to rise above that label. In 21 years you'd think she'd be given something, anything really. I think that's why her kicking a heartless in the KH TV show pilot made me, and probably others, so excited. She did something! And it was cool, that's what we needed. Something cool.

So why am I talking about all this? The fandom has made jokes about Kairi being a plank of wood for years, it's no secret to anyone she's been given very little in terms of character. I guess my question is why? Why is Nomura giving this character with an interesting backstory and an interesting set of powers with seeds of a character if you squint such little time? Not only has she been around since the very beginning, but even characters who we know much less about than her are far more fascinating. I like to compare her to Yozora, who is a character we really know nothing about however we know he's powerful, and we know he has a goal. And I can assume he will deliver on both of those things even when we know more about him. Kairi on the other hand has had very few cool moments, has no goal, and just MIGHT be powerful. I mean you'd think having a princess of heart, a topic that has been covered in multiple games and will likely continue to be touched upon, as a main character would be amazing, right? Well, she's hardly ever mentioned to be a princess of heart and all we know about her powers is that she can bring back a heartless Sora in Kingdom Hearts 1. And that's it, that's all we know.

And I haven't even gotten into the whole thing about the Destiny Trio, the main trio in this series made up of 3 very important characters, feels more like 2 duos. It's either Sora and Riku or Sora and Kairi, not "Destiny Trio". And we know Nomura can write good trios, even while having 2 of the characters have moments together. So why can't the Destiny Trio have this? The 3 of them hardly interact without one of them overshadowing the other. For instance, the Riku and Sora KH2 reunion.

Sora is confused on how Riku can be here when he looks like Ansem. Kairi shows Sora that it is in fact Riku, and Sora and Riku have a moment. Then Kairi does nothing for the rest of the scene. In every case, that is a Riku and Sora scene where Kairi is just there. And this happens time and time again, where Riku or Kairi is put to the side so they both can have their moment with Sora.

And now it's time to talk about the scene where Xemnas kidnaps her. This scene is just... GAH I HATE IT!!! Xemnas just snatches her and then somehow, she's just passed out and gets killed. Not only that, but the reactions from other characters are also so lackluster. Sora does his "Kairi!" thing, and if anyone else were to have reacted I would say it should be Riku and Lea. Of course, Lea was dealing with his own troubles during that scene, seeing his best friends again was definitely something that would be more important to him, however he and Kairi spent time together growing a bond and training together, you'd think he'd at least go after her a little more? He does nothing! The only person that reacts to it is Sora, which is so sad since you'd think even Roxas would care a bit, since he and Kairi had that brief moment in KH2 where Roxas and Kairi's minds connect. You'd think any of them would have more of a reaction than they did. And she herself just sits there and struggles a bit. She's got another hand she could use to summon her keyblade again and swipe at him or do anything else that isn't absolutely nothing.

This whole scene would have been better if they had waited longer for Kairi to get taken, maybe she goes into battle with Sora, Riku, and Mickey when they fight the norts, but Xehanort swopes down and stabs her with his keyblade or something. If that happens, we could get more of a reaction from Riku. Really anything that isn't what we got would be better.

Throughout this whole series Kairi has been pushed to the side time and time again, and I highly doubt that'll end any time soon. With a new saga coming and more focus being placed on the Foretellers and what came before, Kairi will likely be once again pushed to the side lines while other more interesting characters take the front lines. It's a very sad fate for a character that has so much potential she'll never live up to due to a lack of interest from the writer.

Well, definitely riku's love for sora. I feel like kh3 was sora's game to understand an act of love and what kind of love that's involved with someone close to you. Plus I've read the sleeping realm theory and yeah

I haven’t read any theories in awhile (I can’t find them) but YEAH I love all of them.

And yeah. DDD is basically Riku talking about Sora the whole time. Like….

1. He is immediately thinking about finding Sora in Traverse Town. He’s so dedicated to it that he trusts a stranger (which from his attitude is probably what he never used to do) to help him MAYBE find Sora.

2. When he DOES see Sora in hologram form, he reaches out bc he wants to touch him, but he knows it’s not real so he pulls back. He wanted to touch him-

3. When they seal Traverse Town’s keyhole, Riku looks over at Sora while he does the same. They know the other is there without seeing them. They can feel it.

4. Riku in Pinocchio’s world, will eventually talk about Sora and how he’s “the best teacher I could ever have.” LIKE?? HE’S JUST LEARNING FROM SORA WITHOUT SORA EVEN DOING MUCH!!! HE JUST!! LOOKS UP TO HIM!!!

5. In Tron’s world, he talks about how he and Sora can take on anything.

6. In addition to what I said above, when Sam mentioned a portal, Riku got a little excited and I bet he thought he could find Sora through this portal. He didn’t want to go with Sam, a stranger, yet he did because once again he thought he could find Sora.

7. When Riku is talking to Quasimodo, he tells him to find friends who care for him no matter what and to listen to his heart, and then he walks away and says, “I wish I could take my own advice.” LIKE?? NOT DIRECTLY TIED TO SORA BUT LIKE….when you think about it it sorta is.

8. RIKU BECOMES A DREAM EATER FOR SORA!! WITHOUT REALIZING IT TOO!! IT JUST HAPPENS “out of instinct,” LIKE AAAAAH-

9. Literally, the whole plot is based around them looking for each other. Sure, they’re helping the worlds, but like said above, any mention of a portal or finding the other, both immediately perk up. Well, I can’t remember right now if Sora has, but we know Riku has like twice.

10. Riku tells Ansem (I think) that he WILL fight to be by Sora’s side and how nothing will stop him.

11. He literally says, “Are you whats trapping him in that nightmare? Because if you are….I’m what nightmares fear!” LIKE??? HE LITERALLY!! THREATENED A HEARTLESS FOR SORA WITH NO HESITATION

12. Dives into Soras heart to wake him up with, once again, no hesitation. He actually insists on doing it because he knows he has to. He wants Sora to feel him and HE wants to help him.

13. Riku isn’t one for touch, but everytime Sora touches him he lets it happen. Sora throws himself at Riku, and he doesn’t push him off. He’s surprised, obviously, but he accepts it when Sora hugs him again. He likes the contact. AND when Sora throws his arm around Riku, he doesn’t push him off or really tense up. It just makes him feel happy bc Sora is happy for him!

The whole game is just like….centered around the worlds and story while ALSO throwing in soriku. Just little hints and words that show that they’re both thinking of each other!! Really!!

Sora just being like, “He just needs time,” when Tron is not acting himself and attacking Sora, is literally! Such a parallel to Sora and Riku!! You can’t tell me Sora wasn’t thinking about Riku in this moment.

Sometime in Pinocchios world, someone mentions a teacher and Rikus like, “yeah. With that stupid grin he’s always wearing. He’s the best teacher I could ever have,” LIKE?? LITERALLY SAYING!!! HE LISTENS TO SORA AND LEARNS FROM HIM! And they BOTH listen to each other.

Sora follows Riku’s lead and Riku follows Sora. They’re following each other!! They’re connected!! They make a SONG TOGETHER!! AND THEY HAVE A KEYBLADE TOGETHER THAT I USED EVEN WHEN THEY ARENT TOGETHER BC THEIR CONNECTION IS THAT STRONG!!

Sorry for yelling but yes. DDD is just soriku content mixed in with everything else. But soriku is the main ingredient when we focus on the characters and the lessons they learn at the end of each world. They both think of the other at the end of each world and I LOVE it.

And I haven’t played KH 3 in awhile but yeah I agree. I believe it’s Sora’s starting point in understanding everything in himself. But it’s also a starting point to the doubt and the pain that’s kinda been resting there. I need it to be addressed in whatever KH game is next PLEASE NOMURA. Sokai Day Fic 1: True Love’s Kiss(es)

So yes, I am a Classics/ancient history blog, and this is obviously super different from the content I normally post on this blog. Please forgive me, but I’ve recently become OBSESSED with Kingdom Hearts and I have nowhere else to post this stuff at the moment. So please forgive me, normal content will resume soon!

Anyway, as I said I just started playing the KH games for the first time this summer and it’s been so much fun. And seeing all the amazing stories and artwork in this fandom has inspired me to write some stuff too. Anyway, I’m Holly, and I hope y’all enjoy :)

True Love’s Kiss(es)

‘Ugh!’ Kairi groaned, unceremoniously setting down the basket she held in her hands. ‘I forgot that when you pick apples, you have to actually carry them all back, too!’

‘Your basket’s not even half full, Kairi,’ Sora remarked, ‘and we’ve only just started!’

She grinned. ‘Well then, it’s a good thing I have a strong, manly boyfriend to help me carry all of these.’

He could hardly argue with that. Sora feigned displeasure by rolling his eyes and letting out a dramatic groan, which made Kairi giggle. But then he walked over to her, grabbing one of the basket’s handles as she grabbed the other, and the pair made their way deeper down the rows of apple trees. They could hear the distant shouts and laughs of their friends echoing through the orchard as they went. Apparently, Twilight Town– a world basically in perpetual autumn– was known for its fall festivities, including its legendary apple orchards. Once they’d visited the orchards, the gang hoped Remi would help them make apple pies, apple cider, and all sorts of goodies during their visit. To that end, the group had decided to break up into teams in order to pick as many apples as they could carry. Today, Sora and Kairi were paired up. But Sora knew that if they only returned with a measly half basket of apples, the others would surely tease them, accuse them of slacking off.

They wouldn’t be totally wrong, Sora thought with a grin. Sure, Kairi was determined to focus on their task: she was deep in concentration, examining each apple carefully before deciding to place it in her basket. Sora, on the other hand, was much more determined to get Kairi off task. It wasn’t that Sora didn’t want to help out, but this was an opportunity for him and Kairi to spend some time alone– that was a temptation greater than any fruit, in Sora’s world.

Kairi set her sights on a shiny red apple that hung high on a nearby tree. She stood up on her tiptoes, making adorable little noises as she tried to grab it. Sora was staring intently, but not at the apple: Kairi’s form was stretched out in front of him as she reached high over her head, accentuating her curves, and Sora was mesmerized. It was only when she said his name that he snapped out of his trance: ‘Sora,’ she called out, not taking her eyes off the fruit, ‘would you come over and help me with this one? You should be able to–’

Kairi shrieked as Sora, having silently moved behind her, wrapped his arms around her legs and hoisted her up onto his shoulder.

‘Tall enough now?’ he asked casually.

Her surprised squeak was the only reply Kairi could muster. Once she’d successfully picked the apple, Sora released her hips. He held her by the waist as her body slid down his until she landed gently on the ground. Even in the autumn chill, Sora could feel his cheeks burning.

Having regained some of her composure, with a giggle, Kairi said, ‘Guess we make a pretty good team, huh?’ before she turned to the next tree. Sora tried to hide it by replying with a level ‘Absolutely,’ but inside, he was beaming: watching the effect he had on Kairi just never got old for him– but given how hard he had to try to appear cool and unfazed, it wasn’t like he was much better than she was.

Now that he’d had his fun, Sora walked up next to Kairi to help out. The pair picked apples side by side, happily chatting and admiring each other's finds, and over time, their basket filled with bright red apples. While they worked, something about the orchard nagged at Sora’s mind, but he couldn't place it. As he studied a large, blood-red apple in his hands, it finally clicked.

‘All these apples remind me of Snow White,’ Sora remarked. ‘Aqua told me how Snow White’s evil stepmother tried to kill her by getting her to eat a poisoned apple. The dwarves thought she was dead, so they placed her in a beautiful glass casket,’ Sora recalled, his eyes still fixed on the apple. He found himself absentmindedly tracing the spot on his chest where a scar marred the skin over his heart: the permanent reminder of his sacrifice for Kairi– well, his first one, anyway.

‘But she wasn’t dead,’ Sora continued, thought bleeding into memory. ‘She was asleep, and she couldn’t wake up…’

‘Until her true love saved her.’

That broke Sora out of his reverie. He looked up to find Kairi already gazing at him, her eyes soft and sincere. Sora replied, ‘Yeah… Reminds me of another princess I know.’

Did she really mean…? They’d talked about their first adventure numerous times before, but she’d never said it like that.

‘I would have killed for a nice bed to sleep on,’ she continued. ‘You and Riku took me on quite a journey– napping peacefully in a meadow sounds pretty good to me,’ Kairi said with a grin.

A breeze drifted through the orchard, rustling the leaves over their heads. ‘I remember your dad telling us all those old fairy tales when we were kids,’ Sora said. ‘After all the adventures we’ve had… it’s strange to think we sort of became one ourselves.’

‘They’re not always as fun to live as they are to hear…’ Kairi remarked, almost to herself, ‘when you don’t know if there’ll be a happy ending after all.’ Her eyes grew distant, drifting aimlessly down the row of apple trees. ‘I… I still remember waking up at Hollow Bastion, seeing that Keyblade in your chest… And then how you–’ she started, but then faltered, unable to bring herself to say what came next.

Sora gently placed a hand on her shoulder, turning her to face him. She still seemed lost in thought, not meeting his eyes. ‘I know what you mean. But we did get one, didn’t we, Kairi? It took a while, and we’ve had to find each other again and again, but now you’re here. And thanks to you, I’m here. We’re finally together, and nothing is ever going to change that. That’s the best ‘happily ever after’ I could have wished for.’

The pair were alone, the trees standing sentry around them, but his voice grew softer all the same: these words were just for her. ‘All that doesn’t really matter anymore,’ Sora continued. ‘What I mean is… what matters is that we’re here now. That means it was all worth it.’ He took her hand, interlacing their fingers. ‘Back at Hollow Bastion, when I saw your eyes open just before mine closed, when I knew your heart was safe… it was worth it, Kairi.’

She finally looked up at him. Sora hoped his eyes conveyed the sincerity of his words: It had all been for her– and it had all been worth it, every moment. Every time Sora got to see her sweet smile, got to hear her lovely laugh, it was worth it. And now, he wasn’t just connected to her across the worlds by promises and oaths– if he wanted to find Kairi, all Sora had to do was reach for her hand. How was that not a dream come true?

A small smile forming on her lips, Kairi gave him a look of such love and gratitude that Sora knew she felt the same. ‘It just makes our time together now even more precious to me,’ she finally said, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. ‘I’m never going to take this for granted.’

Sora decided then to gather her into his arms and bring her close, her head resting in the crook of his neck, his cheek on her soft hair. ‘You know,’ he started after a pause, ‘I have to admit, when I heard Snow White’s story, I got a bit jealous.’

Kairi pulled back just enough to shoot him a quizzical look. ‘Jealous?’

‘Yeah, of Prince Florian. All he had to do to wake up Snow White and save the day was kiss her– pretty nice deal, if you ask me,’ Sora explained. Kairi smiled, but her eyes were still a bit sad. So he continued, a grin spreading across his face, ‘Don’t know why I didn’t think to try that first…’

‘Oh, Sora!’ Kairi giggled, giving Sora a playful smack on his arm, her face brighter. ‘What, does that mean you thought about kissing Ven at some point, too?’ she countered.

‘I was getting so desperate to find the Power of Waking, I just might have!’ Sora replied, and they both laughed again. Keeping one arm around Kairi, he took a bite from the apple still in his hand. It was crisp and fresh, and amazingly sweet– it was just right, like everything else in this moment.

Suddenly, with a smirk on her face, Kairi plucked the half-eaten apple from Sora’s hand. She lifted the fruit to her lips, holding Sora’s gaze as she took a large bite next to where he’d just bitten, a small drop of juice running down her chin as she chewed. All Sora could do was watch her, hopelessly mesmerized. It was bold, yet playful– Kairi to a T. Before Sora’s brain could fully resume normal functioning, Kairi said, feigning innocence, ‘What? Isn’t sharing fruit kind of our thing? It’s no paopu fruit, but still…’

Staring into her eyes, the radiant sunset bathing them in soft, warm light, Sora grew bold himself: They’d spent so long in silence, so long apart, why waste any time? He’d fought so hard to find her, to come back to her, over and over again. She was right here– if he wanted to kiss her, what on earth was there to consider? Sora reached a hand forward to cup her cheek, wiping the juice from the corner of her lip with his thumb. Kairi let the gentle pull of his thumb part her lips. ‘It is pretty good,’ Sora said, ‘but… you definitely taste better.’ And with that, he lowered his head and kissed her. He heard the sound of the apple landing on the ground, utterly forgotten, as Kairi’s arms wound around his neck.

And Sora had to admit, kissing Kairi felt pretty magical– Maybe those fairytales were onto something after all.

But of course, the distant sound of Aqua, Ven, and Riku calling out in search of them forced the pair to break their kiss, albeit begrudgingly. Sora expected Kairi to step away, pick up her basket, maybe call out to their friends– but she didn’t. She stayed as she was in Sora’s arms, one hand resting on his shirt, over the scar. Sora could feel his heartbeat racing under her touch. When she looked up at him again, something in her eyes was different. Still happy, but mixed with something else– not just happiness, but a determination to be so.

‘This is a pretty large orchard,’ Kairi remarked, her eyes bright. ‘Our friends probably won’t find us for a little while longer…’

‘We’d better not make them wait too long, or Axel will use his chakrams to–’

Kairi grabbed Sora’s hoodie with both hands and pulled him back down to her lips. For a moment, Sora stood frozen, eyes wide with shock. But as she melted into him, his eyes fluttered closed and he wound his arms around her, each kiss between them less ‘Fairy Godmother Friendly’ than the last. Traditionally, in all those fairytales, the heroes only ever got one ‘True Love’s Kiss.’ Sora considered himself the luckiest prince of all time– he had a never ending supply.

Twilight Town was always just that– hanging in perpetual dusk. So Sora really didn’t know how long he and Kairi spent like that, lost in laughter and kisses and caresses beneath the trees. But once their friends’ voices grew dangerously close, Sora and Kairi managed to untangle themselves, wiping swollen lips, readjusting ruffled clothing, and fixing disheveled hair (not that Sora’s hair had been tidy in the first place– and Kairi burst out laughing when she realized her attempts to smooth it didn’t do much good, either). As Kairi called out to their friends, Sora picked up her basket, now full of delicious looking apples, and the pair began to head back toward the orchard entrance. They probably hadn’t gathered the most apples– and he was sure their friends would point that fact out– but Sora didn’t care one bit. He wouldn’t have traded this day for anything.

‘Hey Kairi?’ Sora said as they walked, ‘For the record, if I’m ever in a fruit induced coma– or any other kind of coma, really– feel free to make out with me, in order to revive me. Thought I should say so, you know, just in case.’

‘Oh, really?’ She teased back. ‘I’ll make sure to tell Donald– you always complain he never uses Curaga when you need it.’

‘What? No! Ew, gross!’ Sora blanched as Kairi dissolved into laughter. But when his eyes found hers again, he couldn’t help but smile.

As her giggles died out, she replied, 'Okay, I’ll remember that… But that doesn’t mean you can go throw yourself into danger so I’ll kiss you better!’

‘I can’t help it– when you kiss me, I feel like I can do anything,’ Sora answered simply. Kairi’s eyes widened at his remark, and she ducked her head as her cheeks bloomed pink. Sora beamed. He may have been laying it on her thick, but Sora wasn’t lying: He had true love on his side– the most powerful magic of all.

KH OrgXIII Ages

I’ve been seeing a lot of muddled information around about character ages in KH. Some “sources” have been just fan posts with speculation, lacking references or links to direct interviews or other canon-adjacent material.

Here’s a compiled list from my research on the subject, with links to their direct sources, about each character’s age. Unless there’s a specific age stated, I will only give very rough estimates with what sources we have. If you believe there’s an error, or if I come across contradictory information later, I’ll happily edit to include it with a source. Novels and Manga are considered canon-adjacent for this list, and should be taken with a grain of salt as they can sometimes contradict. However, they will still be included in some for supplementary purposes, and will be updated should another source be found. (Also some of the novels can’t be read online for free easily, so images of the passages will be provided instead.)

Note: Any character with the “20s-40s range estimate” comes from this interview here. 358/2 Days Fan Powered Q&A with Series Director from 2010. This is easier than just linking to the exact same interview over and over.

Xemnas: 30, approximately. From Nomura’s Famitsu interview. Also, it lines up with Terra’s age being 20 (From Nomura’s TSG2018 interview.) + the 10 year gap between BBS and KH1.

Xigbar: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate. (At least physically.)

Xaldin: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate.

Vexen: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate.

Lexaeus: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate.

Zexion: While no direct age was given, as the youngest before Roxas and Xion, he would fall within the 20s range of the 20s-40s that Nomura gives. (KH2FM+ Ultimania states he’s the youngest before the two kids show up. NOTE: The specific page in question is in Japanese. However, chapter 2 of the 358 novel also highlights this.) On top of this, the BBS novel has Ventus claiming that Ienzo isn’t much younger than him (16, Nomura’s TSG2018 interview):

This would place BBS!Ienzo in his teens, and COM!Zexion in his early-mid 20s.

Saix: While no direct age was given, he appears close to Lea in age in BBS, so there’s no confirmation yet but he could be estimated in the mid-late 20s. See Axel’s age for source. At the absolute least, he still falls in that 20-40s broad range.

Axel: No direct age given, but in chapter 1 of the 358/2 novel he guesses that Roxas is “at least ten years younger than him” Given Roxas’s age (15, see Roxas for source), this would put him at mid-20s.

However, the KH2 novel mentions the following:

I’m a little unsure what the “not that you could tell by looking” is referring to exactly. It could be a jab at Axel’s general demeanor being too laid back or immature at a glance compared to Riku’s more serious nature here, or it could be referring to his physical appearance in comparison to Riku taking on AnsemSOD’s look as an older adult, yet still having his 16 year old mind--Axel would look younger than SOD, but is more mature than Riku due to actually being 20-something+.

There is also supposedly an interview close to the KH3 release that outwardly states Axel and Saix’s ages as 26. However, I can’t seem to locate the interview. This does roughly line up with the 358 novel approximation though.

Demyx: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate. (Physically)

Luxord: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate. (Physically)

Marluxia: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate.

Larxene: No direct age given. 20s-40s range estimate.

Roxas: 15 in 358, as stated by Nomura.

Xion: Most people have agreed that due to her relation to Roxas and Sora at the time of her creation, she would also be 15 as of 358. However, I have not found an interview or otherwise canon-adjacent source that confirms this.

(As an aside, headcanon for exact ages are great! I love seeing the ages people come up with and their reasoning to back it up. But please don’t try to push that they’re the canon confirmed ages. It causes confusion.)
