Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Preliminary Round
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries and submitted endorsements below:
The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards (The Tarot Sequence series)
Endorsement from submitter: "Totally immersive, absolutely gut wrenching, with the most fascinating of unreliable narrators, this series has me in a chokehold. This first book is the least diverse, but as the series goes on you get more female characters and more characters of color. I think one of the most personally striking things for me is how nice it is to read a book by an ace man about an ace man. We don't get near enough of those. Plus I will die on the QPR Rune/Brand hill. There are so few stories where one of the most crucial relationships in the book is neither romantic nor sexual and you can pry it out of my cold dead hands."
Rune Saint John, last child of the fallen Sun Court, is hired to search for Lady Judgment's missing son, Addam, on New Atlantis, the island city where the Atlanteans moved after ordinary humans destroyed their original home.
With his companion and bodyguard, Brand, he questions Addam's relatives and business contacts through the highest ranks of the nobles of New Atlantis. But as they investigate, they uncover more than a missing man: a legendary creature connected to the secret of the massacre of Rune's Court.
In looking for Addam, can Rune find the truth behind his family's death and the torments of his past?

The Javelin Program by Derin Edala (Time to Orbit: Unknown series)
When Dr Aspen Greaves signed up for the Javelin Program, humanity's first foray into colonising deep space, they expected to wake up to life in a thriving colony on a distant planet. Instead, they find themself five years away from their destination on a broken spaceship full of complex mysteries, dead astronauts, and a very unhelpful AI.
Aspen wasn't trained for any of this. But if they can't keep themselves alive, get the ship in working order, and find out what went wrong by unravelling a chain of mysteries leading all the way back to distant Earth, then neither Aspen nor the five thousand sleeping passengers in their care will ever see a planet again.

Spoilers for K.D. Edwards’ ‘The Eidolon’ below the cut
So, do we think Queenie is actually the Empress? The name feels like a pretty big hint, IMO.

I wrote the above reply in a rush and thus, to my great shame and annoyance, left off several other books and authors that deserve a mention! Namely:
The Serpent Gates duology (The Unspoken Name and The Thousand Eyes) by A.K. Larkwood;
The Tarot Sequence (The Last Sun, The Hanged Man and The Hourglass Throne so far, with a projected six more books to come) by K.D. Edwards;
The Saint of Bright Doors by Vajra Chandrasekera;
Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo;
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez; and
The Radiant Emperor duology (She Who Became the Sun and He Who Drowned the World) by Shelley Parker-Chan.
hi! sorry if you've already answered this, but i absolutely adore your tithenai chronicles, and was wondering if you had any favorite queer books to recommend/suggestions for what a fan of your work should read next :) before inevitably restarting my strange and stubborn endurance audiobook again <3 thank you!
Ahh, thank you so much! Regarding book recommendations, two of my all-time favourites are The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (along with the spin-off novella trilogy, The Cemeteries of Amalo, which consists of The Witness for the Dead, The Grief of Stones and the forthcoming The Tomb of Dragons), and The Books of the Raksura series by Martha Wells (which consists of seven books total: a trilogy, two short story anthologies, and then a final duology). However, I'd also like to recommend some works by authors that are less well-known than Addison and Wells, so! In no particular order:
The Bone Universe trilogy (Updraft, Cloudbound and Horizon) by Fran Wilde;
The Broken Trust quadrilogy (Mazes of Power, Transgressions of Power, Inheritors of Power and a still forthcoming title) by Juliette Wade;
The Titan's Forest trilogy (Crossroads of Canopy, Echoes of Understorey and Tides of the Titans) by Thoraiya Dyer; and
The Ascendant trilogy (The Tiger's Daughter, The Phoenix Empress and The Warrior Moon) by K. Arsenault Rivera. Happy reading! :D

I couldn't agree more. Those boys are the novel-turned answer of everything I've ever prayed for in a piece of fiction. Say praise to K.D.Edwards.
I don't have anyone to scream to about reading the Tarot Sequence, so I'm just going to live blog under a cut before I explode.
Reading the second book, and Rune is already trying to keep shit from Brand. It's going as well as you'd expect. I already know the big thing he's hiding from him, and woof.
I love Quinn Saint Nicholas with my whole heart. If anything happens to him, I will burn this place to the ground.
Love Addam and his dramatic entrance to save the day. We love a competent pretty, rich boy. He's privileged, but not useless. Probably the only reason Brand lets him stick around, lbr. Still waiting on the three of them to kiss.
MAX!!!!! I was so meh about him when he was introduced in the first book because I don't care about teenagers in general, but this poor boy, I love him so much. The found family feelings are off the charts. I have so much love for Rune and Brand and Max and Quinn and Addam and Queenie forming this family. Rune and Brand and Max lost their families in one way or another. And Addam and Quinn have seen the worst parts of theirs. But they all deserve better and they're finding it together.
This is so entirely my shit.

While I enjoy romantic imodna and would celebrate with the rest of you were they to become canon, my preference leans toward platonic, largely because we so rarely get to see relationships this deeply intense and all-encompassing as platonic. A character's significant other, their life partner, their Person, is almost always also their romantic partner.
But you know what’s even rarer? Romantic and platonic being portrayed side by side, co-existing and equally important, because you can love and share your life with more than one person. Most of the time, the characters have to choose. Vex and Vax split to live with their romantic partners long before Vax's untimely end. Caleb and Veth separate to different cities. The narrative forces Yasha and Molly apart.
Imogen and Laudna are each other’s People. But they have also talked about attraction toward other's in the past (and more recently, Laudna's crush on Ira). What would it look like if one or both of them got romantically involved with someone else, but without letting it change their connection? Could we see something almost like a polyamorous relationship, with one romantic life partner and one platonic, where they are never made to choose one over the other?
So many stories and fan-metas uplift the romantic as superior. The few that don’t instead uplift the platonic. But they don’t need to be pitted against each other. You can have more than one important person in your life. I'd love to see that portrayed.

Hi. I'm looking for recs for angsty queer romances without smut, if you have any. Adult, not YA.
Hmm some of these may not quite meet your desired high angst levels but adult queer romances without smut can already be a bit sparse. They're a range from totally closed door, some fade-to-black, and a few with sex scenes that don’t go into any detail.
The Magic Between by Stephanie Hoyt (more on the sweeter side, implied sex only)
Boyfriend Material (fade to black/one not-detailed sex scene, angsty but still rom-com-ish)
Like Real People Do, by E.L. Massey (sweet, the angst is more around sport & mental health)
This is How You Lose the Time War (primarily sci-fi but with major romance subplot)
The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards (fantasy/mystery with romance, one brief sex scene)
Beowulf for Cretins by Ann McMan (fade-to-black, some angst)
A Tale of Two Florists (lower angst in the actual romance but characters are dealing with grief & other angst in their lives outside of it; closed door)
& some ace romances for bonus!
It’s Always Been You
My Heart to Find
How to be a Normal Person
Let’s Talk About Love

Reading The Last Sun by K.D Edwards
And
I’m really liking the idea of an enemies soul mate. Like a hate so strong it bonds your souls together. And then that bond can be used as a force of some kind like how much would they hate that.
And then think of a story where you think it’ll be enemies to lovers but it doesn’t even or just barely comes up to enemies to friends. More like enemies to slightly civil. All because they had so much hate they slapped each other and bonded.
That’s be so great! Haha
