Ari's K-Pop Roundup: April 2024 (NewJeans, IVE, RIIZE, KISS OF LIFE, ARTMS, LOOSSEMBLE, BABYMONSTER + MORE)
check out last months installment here :)
Bubble Gum - NewJeans
With HYBE collapsing in on itself and ADOR being the epicentre of the explosion, a part of me was a little afraid that NewJeans' comeback would take a hit in the quality department. From the first bars of 'Bubblegum' I knew I had been worried for no reason.
'Bubblegum' is an early 2000s synth fueled record with an edge of 80s Japanese citypop. It's groovy, simplistic, and effortless in execution, and while it isn't necessarily an innovation in NewJeans' notoriously trend-setting discography, it's still a welcome addition that capitalizes on the members vocal tones and the group's style beautifully.
The music video is gorgeous, as usual, with it taking notes from the raw, realistic nature of 'Ditto' and the colour-pop confidence of 'Hype Boy'. Danielle looked especially gorgeous in her natural curls, and Hanni's sharp bob is so striking - she looks like an anime heroine, and I love it.
I know we've all heard the phrase 'I think I just made the song of the summer' a little too much these past few years, but I am of the opinion that NewJeans has successfully achieved it with 'Bubblegum' - it's been a whirlwind year so far for me, and something easygoing and chill like this is exactly the energy I will be bringing into the hotter months.
Even though they have made ripples in the kpop industry, it seems nobody can do it quite like NewJeans.
해야 (HEYA) - IVE (IVE SWITCH)
note: i will be covering the rest of the mini album when the m/v for 'accendio' is released next month, so stay tuned :)
Coming off of the mildly contrived 'Baddie' and the shockingly beautiful 'Off The Record' from 2023's 'I'VE MINE' EP, I wasn't sure where I was going to stand with IVE's comeback. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised.
'Heya' is a track with a chorus melody that makes such perfect sense that you are left amazed that nobody has thought of it before - its so easily catchy, and being 100% real, it's been stuck in my head since the m/v teaser. The construction of this song is honestly very impressive (Dem Jointz is the arranger so this is unsurprising), every vocal or instrumental motif pokes it's head in and reappears in an effortlessly perfect way, even the raps aren't jarring, a pitfall many a kpop track have fallen down before.
Functionally, this song is the perfect response to 'Baddie': that playful edge they centred in on in that track is still present here, but IVE have returned back to home base a little more and drawn from that elegant, untouchable concept they built in their iconic debut trilogy. 'Heya' understands the elements that saved 'Baddie' from succumbing to unlistenability, and knows how to use them redirect back to the right track without discarding the lessons learnt entirely.
While I don't think this song has reached 'After LIKE' or 'Love Dive' levels of perfection for me, it's still a super fun song for IVE, and absolutely a step in the right direction.
(final note: does anyone else feel like this song samples 'flashing lights' by kanye west?? does anyone else hear this? like at 45 seconds?? maybe im slowly going insane idk)
Midas Touch - KISS OF LIFE
(check out my breakdown of the historical allusions in the mv here)
Kiss Of Life seems to just know exactly what they are doing, and the music is just getting better and better. The Britney edge and old SNSD flair on this track is right up my street, and all the members just give their all on this song, their talent is so consistently clear.
Their seemingly exponential growth in popularity and success from debut is so well deserved, they are truly setting the standard for the quality of music of the 5th generation; they are proving with every release that kpop does have more to offer, there is more innovation to be made.
My grievances at this release being a single album aside, this was a perfect comeback in my opinion. Congratulations Kiof for graduating nugudom, I can't wait to see what you do next.
Impossible + 9 Days + One Kiss - RIIZE
And just when I thought I would never enjoy a boy group release again, RIIZE dropped 'Impossible'. The audacity to release something as fucking amazing as this like 3 months after 'Love 119' (which i controversially loved)??? Insane.
This track marks SM's latest addition to their arsenal of iconic house bangers, 'Impossible' revitalizes everything that made Shinee's 'View' and f(x)'s '4 Walls' so good for the 2024 music scene. It has that late night BBC Radio 1/love island pop edge to it that I have been yapping about for months, and I am so obsessed. This is how to compete with Somi's 'Fast Forward' for the most british sounding kpop song.
'One Kiss' is a sonic sequel to 'Love 119' - I am just so obsessed with how much they sound like an early 2000s western boy group on tracks like this, they just exude NSYNC energy. '9 Days' is another laidback pop hit, with a little more energy and longevity than 'One Kiss'. The sound of 2024's summer in kpop has clearly been established, and I for one am in favour.
RIIZE being the first boy group to last more than two comebacks on my stan list is really something I didn't see coming, but it's a welcome change.
SHEESH - BABYMONSTER (BABYMONS7ER)
I think babymonster may start to be delegated to the mini review section of these monthly reviews, because I am genuinely struggling to find something likeable within this song. 'Batter Up' at least had a danceability to it, even if it was highly derivative, but 'Sheesh' is just so predictable to me. Even the switch up from the standard YG party final chorus felt formulaic somehow, and the mini album wasn't much better.
Ahyeon is back though, and she proved once and for all that she is absolutely a necessary part of the group - her rap was easily the song's highlight. The performances from this era were genuinely excellent considering what they were working with.
I don't like being a stuck record with groups I just will never enjoy, so I apologize, but discussions around their future releases will be limited going forward, unless they drop something that I actually enjoy.
Pre2: Flower Rhythm + Pre3: Candy Crush- ARTMS (Dall)
There is something about modhaus production that just works for me, and the interpolation of Heejin's 'Algorithm' on 'Flower Rhythm' is a really exciting choice. The verses, post-chorus and bridge are very strong in my opinion, but the chorus itself seems to get a little lost in the sauce. I can see that chorus growing on me however, and the rest of the song is highly enjoyable, very evocative of the yyxy sub-unit.
Haseul's 'Plastic Candy' is one of my favourites from the ARTMS girls' releases, and with it's interpolation in 'Candy Crush' means I am predisposed to be obsessed with this song. It's a little jazzy, a little citypop, and it's the perfect late night summer vibe. This is easily my favourite of the pre releases so far, but the sheer array of styles the girls have demonstrated makes me very excited to see where they go for the title track.
Girls' Night - Loossemble (One Of A Kind)
LOOSEMBLE AND ARTMS RELEASES IN ONE MONTH??? WE WON
Loossemble's 'Sensitive' was pure pop perfection, and the album was just as impressive, so going into 'One Of A Kind' and its title 'Girls' Night' I just knew they were going to deliver.
'Girls' Night' is a classic LOONA type track, a total kaleidoscope of sonic innovation, and it stuns throughout its 3:24 runtime (we love long songs). My girl Yeojin got PINK HAIR, Vivi got a lore update, and Gowon unlocked her irish ancestry - overall a 10/10 in the visuals department. The rest of the album is an actual masterpiece; 'Moonlight' is a banger that caught me off guard by how good it is, 'Boomerang' has an addictive almost hyperpop edge - it's very evocative of Yeppi Yeppi by aespa, or even Paradisin' by Rina Sawayama. 'He Said I Said' plays it a little too safe in the production department in my opinion, and it comes off a slightly childish for them - it's a perfectly enjoyable song, but probably the weakest on the album. 'Truman Show' brings in a more acoustic sound, which builds with the synth to create a truly cinematic feel - it has a ballad vibe, but keeps it on the upbeat side, so if kpop ballads aren't your thing, you still might enjoy this one. 'Starlight' is a perfect album closer, and although it will never be my favourite LOONA song with 'Star' in the title, it's a really beautiful song. This was a really successful album for them, and I can't wait to see what else they bring to the industry.
MINI REVIEWS:
SPOT! - ZICO feat. JENNIE: I was fully prepared to lie and act like this was a masterpiece before I listened because it has my queen jennie in it, but when I actually heard it I was pleasantly surprised with an absolute certified banger. This has that TripleH - 365 Fresh energy that I love, and Jennie's amazing vocals have made me so excited for what shes going to do with her solo work at odd atelier :)
Could It Be + Freak - YUQI ((G)-IDLE): I've never been a huge (G)-IDLE fan, so 'Freak' really wasn't my vibe, but 'Could It Be' had a Sunmi-esque edge that draws me in somehow. Having heard a snippet on TikTok, I also listened to the b-side 'Red Rover', and it's a real standout, make sure to give this one a listen if you only heard 'Freak'.
Blush - woo!ah!: i am in denial thay the official group name is now WOOAH, why are we erasing herstory?? Anyway, 'Blush' really blew me away - this song is so fun, every second is packed with memorable melodies and beautiful production, and that post chorus??? a killer!! SO underrated, if you haven't checked out this song yet this month, be sure to, it's an underrated song that I can see making it high in my yearly ranking.
고민중독 - QWER: Sapphic themes?? in a kpop music video??? with a girl BAND??? yoasobi vibes??? of course i was going to love it! I had never really heard of QWER before this month, but this song is such a banger and the pop rock sound is immaculate - ( @a-moth-to-the-light this feels very much up your street) I will 100% be checking out their discography, and I can easily see these girls making a home on my stan list, this track is truly amazing.
Final Love Song - I-LAND2 Contestants with ROSÉ: This is the kind of kpop song that makes me understand why this genre is so bullied. What are we doing. Rosé sounded good I guess. Moving on.
IMMM - ILY:1: Such an unexpected groovy sound - big Momoland energy. Pretty much everyone is eating up these April releases, even the nugu girlies are bringing it more than usual. I'm slightly worried about the lack of music video or promotions, but this song is really fun, so please go stream and show ILY:1 some love :)

Slick Rick is still The Ruler.
The rapper once known as "MC Ricky D" has built a legacy on 35 years of lyricism, style and artistry. Yes, he's arguably rap's greatest storyteller; a style icon and dropped one of the greatest debut albums in the history of debut albums. But when one considers how much of his career was put on hold, when one considers just how immaculate his flow remained even as his style evolved and times changed; Rick's run is truly remarkable.
He burst out the gate with the uber-classic Great Adventures Of Slick Rick, an album that boasted at least four bonafide all-time great songs, and a platinum-seller that cemented him as a star on Def Jam. His life would take a dramatic turn soon afterwards, and Rick found himself headed to prison in 1991, the same year he dropped The Ruler's Back. That album was followed by 1994s Behind Bars, completed on work furlough. Rick would see release in late 1996, and he dropped his fourth album, The Art Of Storytelling in early 1999. It was Rick's first album since his debut not recorded under duress, and critics hailed it as his creative and commercial comeback.
So that's the short version of Slick Rick's story. We decided to rank our favorite 25 cuts from the legendary MC Ricky D.
#26
"I LIKE" - MONTELL JORDAN FEAT. SLICK RICK [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! The R&B star and The Ruler team up on this hit from the "Nutty Professor" soundtrack.
#25
"CAN'T SHAKE US" FEAT. SPECIAL K
With this rare mixtape track from 2002, Rick teams up with former Treacherous Three legend Special K to kick bars over a sparse beat.
#24
"WHY, WHY, WHY"
Slick Rick has always had a knack for off-color songs about relationships; and this laid-back groover is Rick once again chastising a woman for her wandering eye--and admitting his own infidelity.
#23
"A LOVE THAT'S TRUE, PT. 1"
Speaking of that whole "chastising..." thing. With a beat that echoes his production on "Hey Young World" years earlier, Rick once again dogs out a trifling woman...or two...or three.

SUBMIT
#22
"CAN'T DANCE TO A TRACK THAT AIN'T GOT NO SOUL"
Slick Rick dropped two singles in 2019 that let the world know the Ruler was still the Ruler. One was this kinetic P-Funk sampling track that was produced by the man himself.
#21
"TREAT HER LIKE A PROSTITUTE"
Not a song that fits neatly into 2022 sensibilities, but it was Slick Rick's first solo single after his days as MC Ricky D. He debuted the track as a solo star in 1988s "Tougher Than Leather" movie.
#20
"IMPRESS THE KID"
Produced by S&S, this track originally appeared on the "Rush Hour" soundtrack, as Rick gets wreck over a bass-heavy groove that sounds so perfectly late 90s you should have to rock a FUBU jersey to listen to it.
#19
"MIDAS TOUCH"
After some years focused more on performing and brand partnerships, Ricky D returned! And he did so in impressive fashion, showcasing his rapid-fire flow on this groovy single, released alongside "Can't Dance To A Track..."
#18
"RUNAWAY"
On what sounds like a spiritual successor to "Mona Lisa," Slick Rick's knack for hooks is kind of an underrated skill in his arsenal. That beat is so chill.
#17
"LICK THE BALLS"
The vulgarity of the hook might make it seem like 2 Live Crew-like raunch here; but no--this is just a good, old fashioned lyrical showcase. Rick blacks out here.
#16
"UNIFY/BE ALRIGHT/LOUD AND CLEAR" - KID CAPRI W/SLICK RICK, MR. CHEEKS, JERMAINE DUPRI, CAM'RON
The album cut features a killer Snoop guest spot; the video version is a medley of tracks tied together by Kid Capri. As usual, Rick does his thing.
#15
"FROZEN" FEAT. RAEKWON
"Even this so-so beat, I make MONSTROUS." If you need a class on lyricism, this song should be on the syllabus. You've got two of the illest of all time, spitting on a track from "The Art Of Storytelling."
#14
"SITTIN' IN MY CAR" (REMIX)
Jermaine Dupri swooped in to remix this single from Rick's 1994 album "Behind Bars." The video would be one of Rick's most popular during his prison stint in the mid-1990s.
#13
"WHO ROTTEN 'EM"
Nod's beat gives Slick Rick chance to flex his parodic British accent again.
#12
"THE RULER'S BACK"
With production credited to the late, great Jam-Master Jay, Rick opened his debut album with an anthem that's as good as any of his hit singles. Jay-Z would famously interpolate the track in 2001.
#11
"IT'S A BOY" (REMIX)
Large Professor worked his magic on this track that originally appeared on 1991s "The Ruler Is Back," but found new life as a banger on 1994s "Behind Bars."
#10
"I RUN THIS"
On "Da Art of Storytelling," Slick Rick returned at the top of his game and one of the best lyrical showcases he ever put to wax is this hotter-than-hell showcase of his skills. Produced by none other than Rev. Run.
#9
"MISTAKES OF A WOMAN IN LOVE WITH OTHER MEN"
No one should need any convincing that Slick Rick is one of the greatest storytellers ever; and this is one of his most poignant looks at dysfunctional relationships.
#8
"THE MOMENT I FEARED"
A song that suddenly became infamous after his 1990 arrest, Rick documents a tailspin of fictional events that would eventually land him in jail.
#7
"STREET TALKIN'" FEAT. OUTKAST
Big Boi has always sounded like a spiritual successor to MC Ricky D, and their chemistry is potent on this classic Jazze Pha-produced single from 1999s "The Art Of Storytelling"
#6
"TEENAGE LOVE"
One of Rick's most iconic songs and one of the Bomb Squad's most R&B-friendly production. It's Rick recounting the trials of being young and thinking you're "in love."
#5
"BEHIND BARS" (DUM DITTY DUM REMIX) FEAT. WARREN G
Warren G brought his uniquely G-Funk styled production to Rick's harrowing-and-hilarious tale of life while incarcerated. This is a master clinic on storytelling.
#4
"MONA LISA"
It's hard to believe one of Slick Rick's most beloved tracks was never even a single; Rick's tale about meeting a shorty at a pizza parlor would become surprisingly influential.
#3
"I SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE IT"
One of Rick's greatest gifts is his knack for taking a story that sounds lighthearted and taking a sharp turn into a dark place. This is one of his best.
#2
"HEY YOUNG WORLD"
Rick produced this impeccable classic himself, a topical look at society that also encourages youth to make good decisions. There are a handful of songs that truly deserve being called "perfect" and this is one.
#1
"CHILDREN'S STORY"
If you documented the greatest rap tracks of all time, this uber-classic would most definitely on the short list. Rick tells a story that's darker than you think; about a triggerhappy teen who goes on a crime spree with tragic results. You know every word. Everybody does.

SUMIN & SLOM - MINISERIES
(Alternative R&B, Electropop, Neo-Soul)
The South Korean duo don’t arrest themselves to the oft-homogeneous sound of mainstream K-Pop, instead calling the powers of neo-soul, downtempo, and flirty R&B for one of the most nectarine releases of the year. In a little over half an hour, they stake their claim to every promise pop can offer.
☆☆☆½
Miniseries is a Korean pop album, but it's not a K-Pop album. You get what I mean? Not even taking into account the huge boy band/girl group structure of most K-Pop, almost all its prominent players have similar pulls and sonic qualities. But Miniseries doesn't sound ready for a stadium or roaring fans, or like much else in any pop world: instead, it's decidedly malleable and takes on whatever form SUMIN & Slom find most appealing in the moment. Traversing neon house, liquid jazz, and both electronic and trap-kissed R&B together, SUMIN & Slom put together an eclectic genre experience bound by one single element: its readiness. Everything they offer on Miniseries, they offer in potent and candescent little packets. Most songs here are about as long as you'd expect most contemporary pop to be: three to three-and-a-half minutes on average, but the ways they both quickly expand ideas and compress them into singular addictive experiences is most impressive. Held high by Slom's voracious production tastes, the roads that the two take Miniseries down rhythmically and structurally feel tasteful, yet out-of-the-box. Finale tune Cheers mixes breakbeat, murky funk bass work, and even a saxophone in the foggy corners of the mix that makes the song deeply engaging, while not feeling like a "deep listening" experience the same way a more explicitly progressive pop record might be shaped. Bubbly R&B cut The Gonlan Song's bright piano leads are easily recognizable, along with its bubblegum-thick synth bassline, but SUMIN & Slom don't succumb to repetition: instead, little sprinkles of sparkly synths, sixteenth-note cowbell clinks, and SUMIN's rock-candy sweet harmonies. Pop of this caliber is hard to find even once, and an album with the vast majority of its tracklist being this consistent is stunning enough. But, it's the whirlwinds of pop and the diverse genre combinations SUMIN & Slom pair with it that are the true royalty of Miniseries. Yogjogi is unfettered, heart-yanking house-pop with a four-on-the-floor kick with enough pull to send you flying in the air. The citrus-scented smoke room of In Touch is sensual enough to be an entangled bedroom soundtrack, but it throws in some bright keyboards and creamy right-hand piano that gives the song more depth than just a groovy slow-jam. I'm still not sure what to make of opener Mirage, which slams these walls of electronic-covered vocal lines around short melodic phrases that, while losing their excitement over three minutes of the same thing, shows their experimental edge's existence. Like it's name, Miniseries isn't able to deliver everything we know these two could do together, but it's a perfect kindling to the forest fire of pop they'll soon generate. The coolest intersection of sounds here is on Trap, starting off as a field-recording/R&B crossover that promises the kind of romance-driven pop that carries love like it's water from the fountain of youth, an abrupt change to more rhythmic and harmonically-driven trap pop becomes fascinating, the sound used to excite instead of as a crutch like it has become for many in the mainstream. Out of all the marbles on Miniseries, after listening to Trap the most impressive qualities to SUMIN & Slom's work is how new they make every little thing feel. Energizer-bunny electropop has been around for decades, yet is rarely as enthralling as on Yogijogi. Alternative R&B has become a pop artist's right-hand man at this point, and somehow I can't think of many songs as syrupy from the camp as In Touch. It's this controllable Midas touch that the duo have with their music that makes me dream of everything they can do, and there's no doubt they want more of it, too.

THE VIDEO
“You Fuck Me Up,” made at home with an AI depth-mapping model (MiDaS).
This technique reveals the ghosts of portrait mode—these are the images your phone makes in secret when it blurs the background of your photos.
THE SONG
This is a cover of the 2004 song "You Fuck Me Up," by Dub Narcotic Sound System, a lo-fi funk band named after the recording studio in Olympia, Washington, where many of our friends and extended Pacific Northwest community have recorded albums over the decades for K Records and various other satellite labels. The original vocal on this song is performed by the Olympia underground art-ward multi-instrumentalist staple Heather Dunn (Tiger Trap, Liarbird, Lois, Raincoats, The No-No's, Halo Benders, Dennis Driscoll) whose fantastic and loose performance taps into an undeniable, elemental horniness. It's very alive. This music, and the larger constellation of music that constitutes its scene, has always represented, to us, the very fundamentals of punk. In its infinite capacity to miss the point, Pitchfork called this song "horrifically off-key" and "endlessly bad" back in the day.

Heya Steph! You have any good whump!John fics? Or just any fics where Sherlock's the one caring for/worrying about John?
FUCK YES I DO NONNY XD It’s on my Sick Fics offline list, so it makes me happy when someone wants fics I’ve already got sorted, LOL.
Check it out:
SHERLOCK TAKES CARE OF JOHN
You Lead, I Lead, You Follow, I Follow by BrighteyedJill (M, 862 w. || Fever, H/C, John Whump) – John wakes up after a chase gone wrong to find Sherlock watching over him, but he’s a little hazy on the details.
Home and Dry by BeautifulFiction (G, 1,052 w. || Fluff, Friendship, Pre-Slash) – Sometimes actions speak louder than words, and comfort can come from the most unlikely source. John and Sherlock pre-slash blanket-fic fluff.
What to do with an Ailing Flatmate by LyricalSinger (K, 1,076 w. || Friendship / Fluff) – John is ill, and Sherlock is trying!
Internal by OldBesinaStuff (T, 1,131 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, John Whump) – Just a one-shot wherein John is injured and Sherlock deals with it - in multiple ways.
Overtime by glow_in_the_dark (G, 1,149w. || Fluff, Tea, Caring Sherlock) – John has worked over 80 hours this week, and will no doubt have to go into work tomorrow too. Arriving home beyond dead tired, his flatmate seems to take make it his personal mission to make John comfortable. Part 2 of Little Fluffy Oneshots
I’m Sorry by bewdifuldragon (K, 1,172 w. || Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Sick John) – During a case - that just for the record, he never wanted to take on anyway - John falls ill; and a guilt-ridden Sherlock does everything he can to make amends.
Two To Tango (The Cold Hands, Warm Heart Remix) by igrockspock (T, 1,207 w. || Domestic) – When John is wounded while pursuing a suspect, Sherlock refuses to leave his side. {{FAVE!}}
Fractured by Starlight05 (K+, 1,865 w. || Friendship, Hurt/Comfort, Mild Unconscious Violence, Nightmares) - John has a nightmare, and Sherlock, worried, goes to help him, with consequences.
Listening By Ear by StillWaters1 (T, 3,384 w. || Lestrade POV, Friendship, H/C, John Whump) – Lestrade figured that anyone who thought John Watson wasn’t important, and that Sherlock hadn’t changed since meeting him, had to be completely, bloody deaf. Because it was all right there, in every sound Sherlock made. For anyone attentive enough to listen.
Worth It by JezebelGoldstone (G, 3,467 w. || Fluff, Humour, Injury, H/C, Cuddling) – John receives a minor injury during a case, and Sherlock’s reaction makes John wonder if Sherlock is the best friend he’s ever had, or the worst.
All That I Have by the_arc5 (M, 3,721 w. || Post-TGG Canon Divergence, Pining Sherlock, John Whump, Anxious / Worried Sherlock, Light Angst) – In the aftermath of the Great Game, Sherlock finds himself with a new weakness. John is both the cause and the cure.
Every Step of the Way by Shi-Toyu (T, 3,858 w. || Romance, Hurt/Comfort, John Whump) – When John is injured on a case, Sherlock can’t forgive himself. Everyone expects him to give up on his flatmate and get bored, but he’ll prove them all wrong by sticking with him…every step of the way. Eventual Johnlock.
Water Is Another Matter by cathedral_carver (T, 3,903 w. || Pining, First Kiss) – He thinks it’s in trouble, his poor heart.
I’ll Take Care of You by Lastew (T, 4,123 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Sick John) – Sherlock doesn’t always communicate well and sometimes that leads to problems. What happens if John suffers because of it?
A Moment Changes Everything by CymraegCariad (K+, 4,294 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Angst, John Whump, Friendship) – John gets hurt and Sherlock tries to help.
Between Asleep and Awake by katydidit (K, 4,309 w. || Friendship, Sick Fic, Post-TRF / Reunion) – John is sick. Incredibly, extremely, dangerously sick. Plagued by a high fever, he begins to hallucinate, start seeing things that aren’t really there. Because they can’t be there. Can they?
Memories Lost on Christmas Day by agnesanutter, PlainJane (G, 4,479 w. || Fluff, Hospitals, Worried Sherlock, Post-TRF, Christmas) – It’s the day before Christmas and Sherlock and John are exactly where they need to be….
Cephalalgia by the_beekeeper_of_sussex (E, 4,979 w. || First Kiss, Frottage, Friends to Lovers) – John is in pain and it’s up to Sherlock to set him to rights by any means possible.
Drive by lifeonmars (M, 9,537 w. || Virginity, Awkward First Times, Minor Injuries) – John and Sherlock are stranded by the roadside, and John is injured. They need to spend the night in the back of a humvee. Sherlock is confused. John is understanding.
Where the Sun Never Shines by teahigh (T, 11,634 w. || PTSD, Nightmares, H/C, Post-TRF, Implied Sex) – John is a mess. Sherlock can’t fix him, but he tries. That’s good enough, John thinks.
Understanding by rizandace (T, 13,268 w. || Friendship, Hurt/Comfort) – Sherlock’s hiding something about his newest case, and John wants answers. Set post-TGG. Friendship fic, mostly, with brief entrances from Harry and Lestrade just for fun.
The Consequences of Caring by Richefic (K+, 16,156 w. || Friendship & Angst, Domestics, Platonics) – Sherlock might scoff at this ‘caring’ lark. But John Watson’s situation cries out to be 'solved’ and there is nothing that Holmes likes more than solving things. A series in four parts.
Partners in Crime by Richefic (T, 16,560 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, Sick John, Meddling Mycroft, Caring Sherlock, Domestics) – John Watson receives some devastating news which puts a spanner in his medical ambitions. Will Sherlock prove capable of the kind of comfort and reassurance he needs or will their partnership be ended before its even begun? Set between 1.1 and 1.2.
John Watson doesn’t have a Boyfriend by naughtyspirit (E, 18,932 w. || UST / URT, Fluff & Smut, Voyeurism, Masturbation) – John’s date has gone very well. Sherlock requires tea. John wishes he hadn’t resolved that their relationship was strictly hands off and isn’t about to address it. Unless he has to. Smut, fluff and shower time for a naked John Watson.
The Midas Touch by flawedamythyst (E, 32,231 w. || Magical Realism, John has a Magical Cock, Dub Con, Healer John) – John Watson has a medical condition that means everyone he sleeps with is instantly healed of all illness and injury. This causes complications when Sherlock breaks his arm, and even more complications when Sherlock falls in love with him. Yes, this is a story where John has a literal magic healing cock. It’s a lot less cracky than you’re probably imagining. Warning: Contains complex issues of sexual consent, although not between Sherlock and John.
Right Hand Man by SilentAuror (E, 42,031 w. || H/C, Injury, Slow Burn) – When John’s left arm becomes paralysed after a car accident, Mary asks Sherlock to take him back to Baker Street to recuperate, as she’s about to give birth. Despite the fact that the search for Moriarty is ongoing, Sherlock takes John in and takes responsibility for overseeing his rehabilitation as he adjusts to the loss of his arm.
Scars by SilentAuror (E, 60,493 w. || Rape / Non-Con / Abuse, Gaslighting, Manipulation, Dub Con Elements, Homophobia, Angst With Happy Ending, Mary is Not Nice) – S3 rewrite, showing Mary’s manipulation of John as he realizes his love for Sherlock. Mary is not having it.
Maintenance and Repair by patternofdefiance (E, 106,650 w. || FutureAU, Augmentation || Augmented John, Depression, Body Modification, Slow Burn, Worldbuilding, Sci-Fi, Self-Care, Body Dysmorphia) – John wants to explain the rush of sensation and data, which is just another form of sensation (or is it the other way around?). John wants to say:Augmentation circuits report temperature, pressure, various forms of quantitative input. Sudden changes are reported as pain, since sudden changes are dangerous, and pain is the quickest way to encourage reflexive extraction. But all John can manage is, “Nng.” Because this sudden touch is not reporting as pain. Part 2 of STATIC
Sketchy by serpentynka (E, 184,053 w. || Post-TRF, Post-Mary, John Whump, Slow Burn Love Story, Case Fic, Art, Porn With Feelings, Switchlock, Travelling, Career Change, Family Secrets, Illness / Health) – What (and who) will be left when nobody cares about your Work? A slow-burn fic with cases, places, mistaken identities, unfair choices, essential changes, violent feels, blatant lies, fearless portraiture, family secrets, high-risk bespoke gifts, durable friendships, bedtime stories, foreign travel and tongues, sickness (and health), and the significance of things which are slow to unfurl – but cannot be ignored. Oh, and…porn. Part 1: Sherlock takes on an obvious case (barely a 4) and meets someone who will force him to re-examine what it means to see. Part 1 of Sketchy
JOHN IS SICK / HURT (WHUMP FICS)
Prayers by Jberry (M, 665 w. || H/C, Injury, John Whump, Fear of Death, First Person Sherlock) – Sherlock has never been a man who prayed.
Words Were Never Useful by Jenn1984 (K+, 819 w. || Hurt Comfort, John Whump, Friendship, Ambiguous Ending) - ALLEY BEHIND THE BOOKSTORE, JOHN STABBED. HELP NOW. SH
I Never Told You by MrsNoggin (T, 1,650 w. || Fluff & Angst) – Who looks after John when Sherlock is gone? Just a bit of angsty fluff, maybe with a bit of a happy ending. A little wishful one-shot, rated for John’s good old British pottymouth.
206 Reasons by whitchry9 (K+, 1,693 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, Pre-Slash, Light Angst, Worried Sherlock) – John won’t wake up, so Sherlock lists all the reasons why he should. Because he appears to be a bit besotted. How inconvenient.
Take My Hand, Knot Your Fingers Through Mine by patster223 (K+, 2,003 w. || H/C & Friendship) - “I know this is an inconvenience for you, but I would really rather you were awake right now, John.” John is unconscious, and Sherlock decides to talk to him anyway. Sherlock/John pre-slash.
Water Is Another Matter by cathedral_carver (T, 3,903 w. || Sick Fic, Pining, First Kiss, Heat Wave) – He thinks it’s in trouble, his poor heart.
Can they?
Bound Into the Fire by Tara Laurel (T, 6,672 w. || TEH, Suspense, Hurt/Comfort, Introspection, Bonfire Scene, John Whump, Mary is Nice) – “John sometimes compared Sherlock Holmes to the flaming beast in his mind…Not such a bad way to go, John mused. Being consumed by Sherlock. Dying in his fire. No. This was different. He was burning alive. Not figuratively. Not some flowery metaphor. Burning.” There was no two minute stay of execution. “Amazing how fire exposes our priorities.”
Galapogos by anchors (E, 8,460 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Angst, 5 and 1, John Whump) – Somewhere in the depths of the universe, and somewhere in the middle of Sherlock’s chest, a star goes into supernova.
We Might Not Make It Home by Ballykissangel (K+, 10,702 || Angst, Hurt/Comfort, No Slash) – A few months later they are on a case that has gone horribly wrong They find themselves gravely wounded and locked in a cellar Holding onto to each other and trying their best to stay alive Sherlock can’t bring himself to say another goodbye to his dying friend and John can’t find the will to live anymore and just wants to stop hurting. Sequel to When Evening Falls So Hard.
Equilibrium by augustbird (M, 12,351 w. || Jealous then Worried Sherlock, Sick John) – At Baskerville, John is infected by a virus that turns him into a genius. But when the infection progresses into neurodegeneration, it’s a race against time to save himself. Flowers for Algernon fusion.
Obsession by storylover18 (K+, 15,213 w. || HC, Case Fic, Friendship) - Dr. John Watson wakes up ill one morning but it is not the 24 hour flu he thinks it was. Soon he lands in hospital, quickly deteriorating and Sherlock must work to find out what has happened to his blogger before it is too late. Case!fic mixed with sick!fic / No slash.
Vessel by Rhuia (E, 15,695 w. || Cancer, Medfic) – That was the surprising bit – the way his doctor said it, eyes shining with sympathy but breathing it out, shifting it off her shoulders and thrusting it onto his, making him take it like an unwanted gift.
The dying Doctor by marylouleach (T, 21,168 w. || Hurt/Comfort, Friendship, John Whump) – Doctor Watson is gunned down in a dark alley after work, Sherlock wont rest until he finds the man responsible. Guilt riddles him when he realizes he could have prevented this.
M Is For Moriarty by ElvendorkInfinity (T, 29,882 w. || Suspense, Mystery, Case Fic, Worried Sherlock, No Slash, Whump) – A figure at the end of the hospital bed; a needle in the dark…Moriarty has John, and Sherlock must follow the paper trail through London to find him before time runs out. Sequel to BANG.
You Have Drawn Red From My Hands by J_Baillier (T, 67,085 w. || Heavy John Whump, Hurt / Comfort, Pining, Heavy Angst, Case Fic/Adventure, Slow Burn, Sick Fic, Injury, Guilt & Depression, Just Talk Already Please, Medical Realism, PTSD) – John getting injured leads Sherlock on a path of guilt and revelations.
The Vapor Variant by 88thParallel (CanadaHolm) (M, 72,684 w. || Post-THoB, John Whump, Protective Sherlock, Guilty Sherlock, Angst with Happy Ending, Hurt/Comfort, PTSD John, Slow Burn, Mutual Pining, Suspense, Virus, Sickfic, Big Brother Mycroft) – They stood face to face in the middle of a clearing. The dim light of the moon barely allowed Sherlock to see the glassy terror in John’s eyes and the sweat that glistened off his forehead. His nose was bleeding again, blood dripping in a slow stream from his right nostril. They were both gasping for air, John’s eyes locked on Sherlock’s. There was no recognition there, just wild animal fear. Time stood still for an eternal few seconds, and Sherlock took a shaky breath. “John—”Spell broken, John spun and bolted back into the woods. Still heaving for air, Sherlock took off after him. {{HAVEN’T READ THIS FIC YET, READ AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION}}

NOTABLE FACTS:
raised by foreigner parents (canada, japan)
avid girl group fan, especially of groups like mayday and cherry bomb!
her favorite color is red and she loves hearts, so fans always bring things covered with hearts or heart-shaped or red in general to fansigns and concerts.
she performs hidden heart events during music show recordings, fan meetings and concerts.
IDOL GOALS
SHORT-TERM GOALS:
sweeten 99 into a relationship of mutual respect or die trying. she would also greatly appreciate seeing celeste win on a music show before their fifth anniversary, it’d mean a lot to see their collective work pay off.
LONG-TERM GOALS:
she intends on rebuilding her public favor after her affinity for rolling into controversy by getting back into the swing of things and eventually, earning the trust of the company to go on to have a presence on television, but most importantly, a solo career. ultimately, unless something changes, she wants to pursue a career outside of celeste and 99′s sexist regime.
IDOL IMAGE
there’s something sweet about the sound of people, young and old, calling her name when she gets in and out of minivans ahead of her members - a smile on her face to show off that charming eye smile she sees them tweet about crying over, a wink and a heart at their cameras so they have something to wet themselves over once they’ve gone home to write self-insert fanfiction about the time she looked them in the eyes like they were the only one around. it feels like power, the admiration they pour over her in waves, and she bathes in it, basks in it.
she deserves it.
some who know her might call her brand of confidence something like arrogance, self-righteousness, an undeserved pompous air that’s damn near suffocating in its blatancy, but she calls it self-awareness, she calls it knowing her own worth whilst being surrounded by the kind of people who bow and exalt in the presence of their higher ups, after years of being who the people around her wanted, needed her to be. nobody ever got what they wanted, what they deserved, by waiting on the sidelines for something beautiful to happen - the truly accomplished were the kind of people who took, take; the kind who suck opportunities dry and refuse “no” as an answer; the kind who don’t bother asking for what they want. (take, take, take) it’s never a question, it’s a request, and, in her eyes, what makes her that much better than her group mates. her coworkers. bless them, the sacrifices she’s made for them.
chunja comes into the industry, a fresh-faced twenty-one, her concept that of a doll. she cups her cheeks and plays coy when she introduces herself, bows deeply and enthusiastically with a smile that stretches so far across her face her cheeks ache. “charm them with your humility,” they tell her, brushing her hair into soft pigtails in hair and makeup, blushing her cheeks and making her the picture of innocence. she’s pretty, soft, bashful, the kind of charm you find in a girl who’s out of her element. she just wants to sing, she makes clear whenever people ask her what she’d be doing if she weren’t a member of celeste. “being able to perform and sing for a living is all i could ever ask for!” it’s cute, fake, and she grimaces when the cameras are off and she can wipe her face clean of innocence.
superstars are born.
if there’s one thing she’s got in spades, it’s a personality, a sense of humor both contagious and shocking in it’s ability to hit the mark without fail. she attributes this to her absorption of the numerous personalities she’s had to embody over the course of her lifespan pre- and presently as an idol. she knows who to be and when to be it and it works in her favor, nowhere more than on television, but it’s a risk and they make sure she knows it when they pull her back and away from doing any free-form variety shows, least of all, all on her own.
she’s the last thing a half-dead girl group needs and they prefer she keep her mouth shut if she’s not singing.
as their concept shifts, so does her persona. her image, to the public, is that of a wildcard, a braveheart who speaks out and up when something bothers her and it’s something that’s served to cause a divide in the opinion of k-netz. she thinks she likes it that way, the attention, being a topic of conversation whether it be good or bad.
[+400, -50] For all her faults, you have to admit she’s one of the best vocalists 99 has right now, especially considering how great Heaven are… and she really is made for broadcast! so charming! Ruby fighting!
some say.
[+417, -115] yah, she’s such an attention wh*re. i can’t even focus on her vocals with that personality…i bet 99 is making her act like this so people will pay more attention to Celeste. she used to be so innocent. we see right through you, Ruby-ah~~ who wants to bet they’ll all be half naked for their next comeback? Cleavage? Ass?
say others.
chunja basks.
IDOL HISTORY
TW ALCOHOLISM
her mother is a zainichi korean living in japan and pursuing a career in music, she wants to be a singer; her father, a hockey player who’d grown up overseas in canada. there’s no reason they should ever cross paths but: they do, and they have chunja after a brief, passionate tryst that turns into a twelve year marriage that ends when her father is caught cheating with one of the only friends her mother had made after following him to toronto. it ends with a clap and a bang, and she packs up and takes chunja with her.
her mother never fails to mention that chunja being born on valentine’s day is the cruelest irony in their love story. chunja hates birthdays.
growing up, she only ever knows change, the sole regularity in her life being new environments and homes and apartments across the expense of the small island she’d been planted in. her solace is her home-learned knowledge of japanese and her ability to adjust. she’s a chameleon in the face of adversity; she sets out to become the person she needs to be to survive and it works. it’s fake, but it never matters when it’s never a matter of if they’ll leave again but when. when: she’s fifteen years old and her mother wants to touch base with her roots, her background as a blood-born korean raised in japan is just another barrier for her to overcome in her journey to find herself or succeed, or - something. chunja never really knows what her goal is, she works odd jobs in lounges and clubs and brings home enough to keep the lights on but she never sees her mother sing unless it’s late at night over a glass of wine out of many - enough to empty half the bottle before she passes out at the dinner table.
she always wakes up to her making bacon and eggs, fish in the oven and rice in the steamer with tomoko aran playing loudly from the stereo they’d gotten secondhand. her mother always tells her that she could’ve been just like tomoko if the timing had been right. “yes, mother,” she says. chunja knows better than to question her and eats her food, watches voltron on mute while her mother has a breakdown on the phone. she tries to be empathetic but it’s moments like that where she finds herself missing her dad. she feels weak knowing that there’s not much she can do about it or the way her mother feels.
in any case, south korea is another new beginning that chunja’s become accustomed to and she spends the week before their flight over watching kdramas with subtitles on. she’s studying - the language or the mannerisms, she’s not as certain of, but she takes it in nonetheless. it’s her only hint at figuring out who she has to be to make it this time, who she needs to be to survive.
the one thing chunja and her mother have in common is singing, so it only makes sense that she follow in her mother’s footsteps once they’ve settled in.
it begins as forced mother-daughter entries into talent shows across seoul until they go their separate ways and enter as solo acts, singing ballads and songs by powerhouse vocalists. it becomes a competition, one that reaches a head when they both decide to take their talents to an agency.
it’s only kind of awkward when chunja’s the only one who makes it.
she’s surprised that her mother even signs the forms to set her up as a trainee but doesn’t address the elephant, neither of them do - how she’d failed again at achieving her dream, how she’s not the young girl she’d been before, how chunja’s now got the world laid at her feet standing where she’d always pictured herself.
her mother takes her out for ice cream after all is said and done. it’s probably the last time you’ll be able to have some for a while, hm?” she says, smiles and sticks her plastic spoon into a cup of half-melted vanilla. it doesn’t reach her eyes.
it’s not until she gets scouted for celeste that chunja starts to get the feeling that her mother has begun to resent her. by then, six years have passed with little to say for it, never enough for her to serve as an actual threat to her mother’s ego. and her mother, she keeps trying to make her dream happen, too, while chunja trains. she auditions for midas, msg, even koala.t and a handful of nugu companies in a moment of sincere desperation, weakness when chunja turns eighteen and moves out on her own. she doesn’t realize how bad it’s gotten until she comes over to tell her the news and she throws a lamp at her head.
the breakdown her mother has is terrifying. she doesn’t recognize her anymore.
it’s sad, she thinks, because she doesn’t want this the same way she does. she hasn’t worked her whole life to be a singer the way she has, hasn’t spent every hour of her life wanting something with every fiber of her being the way she does. chunja wants it - of course, she does, more than anything at this point in her life. but celeste is a means to an end, a stepping stone on a pathway to wealth and notoriety, the leading way to becoming a household name. it’s not the air she breathes. she’s a performer. she feels guilty, holds her mother while she cries herself to sleep and takes the key to the liquor cabinet with her when she has to go, the sun peaking over the horizon and through the always-drawn curtains of her apartment. it’s the first time she feels her heart ache this way but she manages to shove the feeling down just in time for celeste’s debut showcase.
(she calls her everyday, just in case. promises to bring her on stage to sing with her one day. eventually, her mother stops answering and, wow, chunja thinks. this is what it feels like to be alone.)
the rise of celeste is a slow but steady ride; it burns with the same intensity as a flame. it begins as a flicker on the end of a match and sets ablaze all of its surrounding and engulfs the five of them with it. it’s not enough, they never win. chunja thinks it’s pride she feels when she sees her face more than the others during comebacks, when she smiles and winks during music show performances and harvests the loudest cheers during group promotions. this isn’t a group, she decides after a year. it’s a collective of individuals with a drive to succeed. she thinks that maybe they’re holding each other back. really, she likes it. it gives her something to look forward to, a needle to prick her finger on in the haystack of opportunity. she feels greedy, wants it all for herself and more.
she thinks that maybe she gets it from her father, this lack of loyalty and allegiance. she thinks maybe she’s still a little bitter that he’d left her and her mother to rot, bitter that her mother had abandoned her to navigate the world all on her own under the touch-and-go care of industry executives, but then she hears fans chanting her name and she doesn’t much care.
you sacrifice the best parts of yourself for success around here. she learns it the hard way during the lull before they regroup and comeback with mr. chu. celeste is a money suck, a blackhole where investments go to die when they don’t sell the way their backers expect them to. it gets dark and desperate and she can see it in the way management gets frustrated backstage. she feels it, the feeling of failure and it claws at her, tears away at her self-esteem when aurora gets their first music show win. she’s just like her mother. she drinks, she wallows.
her image suffers during interviews that year and she feels even more bitter and deprived when she watches imperial and heaven make achievements leaps and bounds ahead of celeste. and chunja, she feels cheated, let down by the company she’d put so much faith into. the very company that was content to suck her dry. it’s pitiful, the way she cries during group meetings, when she asks the higher ups what they’re doing wrong.
her new source of solace becomes senior idols, friends who know better. she learns. she adjusts. she misses her parents and resents herself for being weak, desperate.
she only feels slightly vindicated when they make it into the new year without being forced to disband, heads bowed in shame. it’s significantly less vindicating when they end the year without a win to show for it. again. another one for the books, a trial and error that teaches her what she needs to do to survive.
2018 comes and, with the new year, chunja feels a new sense of agency. tensions rise when she goes to management and pleads her case as a four-year girl group member who feels alienated and disrespected in comparison to the boy groups in her company. it’s embarrassing to watch imperial’s performances in comparison to celeste’s own when they’d spent nearly the same amount of time in the industry, a year apart with noticeable differences in success; embarrassing when she looks back on the things she’d had to do, what they’d all had to do, to help their group scrape by, the embarrassment of not even that being enough in the long-run. they don’t do anything about it, ignore her cries for attention, and it’s fury, not passion, that burns in her eyes on stage when they come back with heart attack.
it’s cheap and generic but it toes the line of sexiness. it sells and it’s made apparent by the responses of their male fans, their only fans. they like it, like her and the persona she adopts to suit the shift in concept. she’s changed. it’s what she’s good at. she gets in trouble for slick digs at her company made on group variety appearances, gets criticized by non-fans and conservatives for being too vocal about her opinions, for going braless on her instagram page, for being too handsy with other girl idols - the damned anarchist, the goddamn feminist. shame on her.
but she’s their main vocalist, a powerhouse, at that, and, in any case, it seems to be working in some ways more than others. 99 entertainment is a hellscape, but she makes it her duty to ensure her group’s success in one way or another - if not success, then fair treatment at the very least. maybe that’s part of why she lets the media have at her. what she lacks in tact, she makes up for in talent. there’s no such thing as bad press, right? she stays on the fingertips of online pseudo-journalists when they want clicks. it’s good.
regardless of her agenda, 99 dangles the possibility of a solo debut over her head as a means to get her to behave and she enters 2019 with a solid attempt to clean up her image and get back to work after months of being benched from appearances and solo schedules. it’s hard not to bite the hand that feeds her, better to be predator than prey, but she’s three months clean of challenging the gods that be out of spite and principle. she thinks she’s better for it.
chunja wills it to last, even if they test her patience daily. she won’t be weak again.
