Tôkaidô obake dôchû (Along with Ghosts, 1969)
"You mustn't take anyone's life here. If you draw blood here, a frightening curse will fall upon you."
"Crazy old man, trying to scare us!"
#Tôkaidô obake dôchû#along with ghosts#yokai monsters#yokai monsters: along with ghosts#blood tw#horror imagery tw#japanese cinema#1969#kimiyoshi yasuda#yoshiyuki kuroda#tetsurô yoshida#kôjirô hongô#masami burukido#pepe hozumi#yoshindo yamaji#bokuzen hidari#shinjiro akatsuki#saburô date#mutsuhiro toura#ryûtarô gomi#kazue tamaki#belatedly finishing up this fun trilogy‚ and it ends strong; actually I've enjoyed each film more than the last#this one is a real gem tho; starts darker and more violent than the previous two films‚ and i prepared for a more adult take on the#folklore these films explore‚ only for the film to take an unexpected swerve by introducing an adorable little girl character and her#search for the father she's never known. in a way the ghosties and ghoulies are very much a backseat presence in this film which is more#interested in yakuza infighting and a little girl's picaresque adventures on the road but this is genuinely a better film for that decision#by reducing the screentime and exposure of the supernatural elements they become more mysterious and have more#impact (where the prev film had adopted a much goofier tone toward the beasties). the result is admittedly something that feels almost#unrelated to the prev two films but is for me more wholly satisfying. plus I'd happily watch a whole series of films about this adorable#kid and her found family of misfits and weirdos and gangsters and heroes

Chris: Gamera vs. Viras remastered, hd, US extended theatrical version which seems to include about 15 minutes of battle scenes from previous Gamera films, and I remember the bee hive UFO when I first saw this at age 5, but I had no recollection of the monster, and the film I saw as a kid must have been edited massively, I certainly don’t remember the gory attack on Gamera, and the scenes with Gamera attacking the UFO are great, saw this on the remastered bluray set, Watch: Buy for kaiju fans, otherwise Watch: When Free.
Richie: I thought the decapitation transformation scene was amazing, and I have no memory of it, it must have been edited when I first saw it, Watch: Buy.

Daimajin ikaru (Return of Daimajin, 1966)
"Lord Danjo, even if Juro was here, as long as I am alive I will never take orders from you. Now leave!"
"What?"
"You'll see the god's wrath if you bring harm to this land."
"The god's wrath? Huh! Is that a threat?"
"No, it's not. The god that protects us is on Yagumo island. He will become angry if you cause harm to the land."
"Such foolish things don't happen!"
#Daimajin ikaru#return of daimajin#japanese cinema#kaiju film#the return of giant majin#1966#kenji misumi#Tetsurô Yoshida#shiho fujimura#kôjirô hongô#tarô marui#takashi kanda#kôji fujiyama#chikara hashimoto#sei hiraizumi#kiyokazu kagatsume#hyôsuke kanbe#jutarô kitashiro#yûsaku terashima#kayo mikimoto#hideo kuroki#you can guess from the title of the film what happens regarding the quoted text above (spoiler alert: such foolish things do happen and#that guy is gonna regret his wicked ways). Released just a couple of months after the first Daimajin film this is a fairly similar retread#of the story; same broad strokes same overall shape. I would have liked a more direct sequel but this wasn't exactly a surprise considering#the conveyor belt style of genre film production. It's fun don't get me wrong; the Big Man turns up again to smash and crash as only he can#but it takes him more than an hour in a film that doesn't break 80 minutes. So we get a lot of the same kind of internal power struggles#and evils of feudal Japan that the first film covered‚ but somehow it's all a little less magical and exciting than the first film. still#the inevitable rampage is a lot of fun and our Giant Guy gets to show off some new moves (lightning powers! Kazam!)#also this film mixes some decidedly xtian imagery into the gumbo of folklore and fairytale‚ complete with parting of the seas and the#odd crucifixion.

Chris: Yokai Monsters: Along with Ghosts is the third 1960s Japanese yokai-related film that is included in a new Blu-ray box set, and the yokai featured are more monstrous and spookier than the other films, and finally clearly able to seen, Watch: Buy.
Richie: The yokai are used more for effect than part of the plot, Watch: Buy.
