Daimajin ikaru (Return of Daimajin, 1966)
"Lord Danjo, even if Juro was here, as long as I am alive I will never take orders from you. Now leave!"
"What?"
"You'll see the god's wrath if you bring harm to this land."
"The god's wrath? Huh! Is that a threat?"
"No, it's not. The god that protects us is on Yagumo island. He will become angry if you cause harm to the land."
"Such foolish things don't happen!"
#Daimajin ikaru#return of daimajin#japanese cinema#kaiju film#the return of giant majin#1966#kenji misumi#Tetsurô Yoshida#shiho fujimura#kôjirô hongô#tarô marui#takashi kanda#kôji fujiyama#chikara hashimoto#sei hiraizumi#kiyokazu kagatsume#hyôsuke kanbe#jutarô kitashiro#yûsaku terashima#kayo mikimoto#hideo kuroki#you can guess from the title of the film what happens regarding the quoted text above (spoiler alert: such foolish things do happen and#that guy is gonna regret his wicked ways). Released just a couple of months after the first Daimajin film this is a fairly similar retread#of the story; same broad strokes same overall shape. I would have liked a more direct sequel but this wasn't exactly a surprise considering#the conveyor belt style of genre film production. It's fun don't get me wrong; the Big Man turns up again to smash and crash as only he can#but it takes him more than an hour in a film that doesn't break 80 minutes. So we get a lot of the same kind of internal power struggles#and evils of feudal Japan that the first film covered‚ but somehow it's all a little less magical and exciting than the first film. still#the inevitable rampage is a lot of fun and our Giant Guy gets to show off some new moves (lightning powers! Kazam!)#also this film mixes some decidedly xtian imagery into the gumbo of folklore and fairytale‚ complete with parting of the seas and the#odd crucifixion.
