Almaty (250) R2: Francisco Cerundolo [4] def. Justin Engel [WC] 6-4, 7-6(3) Match Stats
📸 BeIN Sports ID
J. Engel tried to capitalize on F. Cerundolo's tightness when he tried to serve it out, but it was not the case as the latter's experience assisted him in nailing the tie-breaker, going after the former's vulnerable backhands to secure the dominance. To add, the former's shaky groundstrokes to start the match also turned out to be costly despite his best efforts to redirect, where even though he had a 100% break point conversion rate from the break-back in the tenth game of the second set, F. Cerundolo still generated 4 break points thanks to his firmer setup.
Besides, F. Cerundolo also had more stable service games despite J. Engel's best efforts to stay clutch in that department. Despite only landing 58% of his first serves, the Argentinean fourth seed won 81% of his first serve points, 4% more than J. Engel as he tried to escape some troubles as he served 6 aces to aid him doing so. However, even if the former double-faulted twice, he still won 13% more points from his second serves than the German wild card, which did not help the latter handle pressure points on serve.
In the quarterfinals, F. Cerundolo will face Alexander Shevchenko, who defeated qualifier Aslan Karatsev 6-1, 6-7(5), 7-5 after a heated battle in the last two sets despite the first-set dominance. Another possible dynamic match looming considering what happened in their last meeting back in the second round of Shanghai M1000, with their pressure points handling once again being tested. That could be a neat continuation for the big day!

2023 Reading Stats
I read 76 books in total.
36 were written by men, 36 by women and 4 by others (i.e. non-binary). I wasn't intentionally trying to have a 50-50 split between men and women; it just worked out that way.
American (13), Japanese (9) and Canadian (9) were the most common nationalities of the authors of the books I read.
Those two things are the only author demographic info I've been recording as they're generally the most evident in brief bios.
The mean publication year was 1941, the median was 2004 and the modal was 2022.
I read 13 books from before 1900, 23 first published in the 20th century and 40 released this millennium.
I read 12 books published in 2022.
The oldest book I read was originally published, or well actually originally performed, in 431 BC.
I read four books that were published or completed in 2023 (Pale Lights Book One: Lost Things, Pale, Camp Damascus and Drinking from Graveyard Wells) but I'm not going to check which one was the most recently released.
35 or 46% of the books I read were translated into English.
My most read author was Engels (3). My second most read author was a tie between Arkady and Boris Strugatsky, Karl Marx, Graydon Saunders and Yōko Ogawa (2 each).
My average book rating was 2.935. This isn't actually on a five star scale but if you pretend it is you wouldn't be too far off.
I'm not going to name the sole book that got my lowest rating because it was by a self published author without an enormous profile so I'd feel like a dick if I did.
I didn't rate 14 books. 11 of these were non-fiction which I often don't rate but this also included De Sade's Justine, Medea, and Pale.
The three books that got my highest rating were Hav by Jan Morris, Nabokov's Pale Fire and The Silent Cry by Kenzaburō Ōe.
#books#misc reading#This says reading stats but it’s more new books read stats#Doesn’t include short stories (unless part of a collection)/fanfic/rereads/etc.

I forget exactly which recent video it was to link to it, but this reminds me of Justin Sledge recently talking a little bit about how much of modern leftism really does look like its own type of secularized apocalyptic movement--from Marx and Engels onward. (Which is also incidentally kinda touched on by his dissertation, I see now looking for anywhere else similar topics might have come up there.)
It really is a point.
For a certain type of online leftist, "the Revolution" is essentially a secular rapture: the Revolution is going to happen, we know not the day or date, and we don't need to do anything to make the Revolution happen, certainly not real-life activism, just believe the right things before it happens and fixes everything.
Just like how evangelicals oppose doing anything to improve the Earth before the rapture comes, these types believe half-measures are pointless. "We DON'T need [change that would benefit many people right now], we NEED a REVOLUTION!" We don't need gradual change; all at once or not at all, and in fact, it's suspect if you are working on those smaller-scale changes. But since all these people do is tweet and do podcasts they're uh, not exactly forcing the end anytime soon

Benny Turner - BT - Nola Blue Records
Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro © Oct '24
BT is Benny Turner's fifth release, and I'm very happy to say that I have now had the honor and pleasure of reviewing them all. To quote Benny: "I had a great time working on this album with some of my favorite musicians and reminiscing about my music history, from picking up the guitar again to revisiting my gospel roots, to finally recording some of my favorites......."
As I prepare to list those favorite musicians of Benny's, I'm going to take the liberty of saying that when Benny said "some", I'm pretty sure he meant "a whole lot". That said, with all of them being dear to him, and many to me as well, I'm going to attempt to name them all. For this project Benny - on lead and background vocals, bass, lead guitar, banjo, percussion and hand claps - is joined by: Bobby Gentilo on guitar, clavinet, piano, percussion and background vocals; Charlie Burnett on upright bass and background vocals; Nate Young on Wurlitzer, piano, clavinet and background vocals; Paul Murr on drums and background vocals; Will McFarlane, Derwin "Big D" Perkins, Billy Davis, Steve Grills, June Yamagishi and Jack Miele on guitar; Harrell "Young Rell" Davenport on harmonica; Clayton Ivey on Wurlitzer, keys and Hammond B3; Justin Holder, and Christy Engel on drums; Jeffrey "Jellybean" Alexander on drums; Sax Gordon on horns; Shawn Allen and Keiko Komaki on piano and B3; Dave Keyes on piano; Norwood "Geechie" Johnson on bass drum; Joe Krown on B3; Tiffany Pollack, Warner Williams, Marva Wright and Kassie Netherland Miele on background vocals; and making her recording debut, Nola Blue Records' very own, Sallie Bengtson on background vocals and claps.
BT contains three of Benny's originals and seven covers that were some of his, and his families, favorite recordings by some of their favorite artists.
Kicking things off is Benny's rendition of "Bump Miss Susie", a song by Rudolph Toombs that's often credited to Big Joe Turner. And just like Miss Susie herself, the song is a smokin' hot number. While Benny excitedly tells us about just how much Miss Susie enjoys bumping, the chorus line of "all night long" features Charlie, Bobby, Paul and Nate enthusiastically reminding us of just how long she enjoys doing it. Musically, the profound rhythm Charlie (upright bass) and Paul (drums) are thumping out is absolutely perfect to bump to; and the rousing guitar (Bobby) and piano (Nate) leads create a perfect bump party atmosphere.
"Going Down Slow" (James Oden) is a song that Benny says is one of the most requested songs at his live shows. With it being one of my favorites of this lot, I get why. Benny took a classic Howlin' Wolf slow blues song, and with his heartfelt and soulful lead and background vocals, he gave it an inspirational gospel feel. Musically, the song is nothing short of masterful: Benny, on the bass, Justin on the drums, and Clayton on the piano and B3 - have the slow blues rhythm groove nailed; while "Young Rell" and Will shine on the killer slow blues harmonica and guitar leads. With its several replays, this one just became the most requested track at the House of Blewzz as well.
The next two songs are songs where in addition to sounding absolutely fabulous, the band does an equally great job of allowing the vocalists to shine. On ballads titled "When I Call On You" (Dee Clark) and "Born This Time", Benny and Tiffany are flawless together. You know those live shows where from time to time the musicians leave the stage and the vocalist does a solo acapella type song? These are that song! The story about how and why this track got recorded is as interesting as the track itself. Other than to tell you that it started in 2017 when Benny met Billy Davis - an original member of The Midnighters - while they were both billed at the Ann Arbor Blues Festival, you'll have to read the rest as Sallie Bengtson, the President of Nola Blue Records tells it on the liner notes. Although it's more of a compilation, Benny's calling it "Finger Poppin Time" (Hank Ballard). Along with Benny singing lead and all harmonies, the song is highlighted by Billy sounding as good as he did on guitar, back when the originals were recorded, and some killer piano leads from Dave Keyes. The first of the final three songs on the disc is also the first of Benny's three originals. The song is called "Drunk" as in "If you see me on the ground, don't try to pick me up - unless you've got a bottle and a sixteen-ounce cup. I want to get drunk". According to the liner notes pertaining to this one, Benny wrote it with his late friend Jimmy Reed in mind. Hmmmmmm, I'd like to hear more about this inspiration. Although some are more common than others, the thoughts that inspire original songs are literally endless. That said, this instrumental composition has to be one of the more unique. While Benny was writing it, It seems that the lazy, laid-back vibe the music created reminded him of "how the animals would lay around in the barnyard at the end of a long hot day in the fields." Hence the title "Sleepy Time In The Barnyard". It features Benny playing his first instrument - guitar. Joining him on what Benny calls "a down-home back porch country blues instrumental like he used to hear his family play when he was a boy in East Texas", are Bobby on guitar, Charlie on upright bass, Nate on piano, and Paul on drums.
The closing track and final original song is titled "Who Sang It First". It's a track that Benny co-wrote with Jim George and it first appeared on "Breakin' News: 10 Years of Blues" - the celebratory Nola Blue ten-year anniversary album. In actuality, the song is a re-write of Jim's original composition titled "Black Is Beautiful". The idea behind the song is that it really doesn't matter if you covered a song and did it better or worse than the original artists, as long as you remember who did it first. Jim describes his original song as a “tribute to all the black pioneers and artists who have paved the way, invented the music and enriched all our lives.” The sincerity that Benny exudes on his vocals, with beautiful backing help from Kassie and Tiffany - truly bring the song's lyrics to life.
Other tracks on another dynamite Benny Turner release include: "The Walk" (Jimmy McCracklin) and "Smoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke it Right)" (Wilson Turbington).

J. Engel then tried to step up toward the end of the match, but his inexperience began to appear under pressure as the match wrapped up. However, just like the first set, he was unable to overcome the shaky start as a backhand error, outside of the nervy forehand errors, caused F. Cerundolo's early break to 1-0. He then continued the strong start with a consolidation to 2-0, and the German wild card slapped his cross-court forehand to start the next game before a forehand let cord moment set up a 2-point lead, putting himself on the board (2-1) even if a return winner from the Argentinean fourth seed negated his game point earlier.
J. Engel then tried to set the tone with his preceding forehand, but F. Cerundolo still held the said service game to 5-3. After the former held to 5-4, the latter should have served for the match, but tightness hit the Argentinean fourth seed as a +1 backhand error equalized the point before his third-shot forehand errors created and converted J. Engel's break point to 5-5. Afterward, the German played his point smartly with a backhand volley finish before he held to 6-5, but as the tie-breaker became inevitable, F. Cerundolo started it with a smash (1-0) before holding the next two games. By then, J. Engel's backhand errors confirmed the inexperience, and despite his best redirection efforts to minimize the gap, the Argentinean fourth seed still took the second set 7-6(3) to confirmed the earlier quarterfinal spots.

—Justin E. H. Smith, “Is Everything Political?”
While I’m sure a man as erudite and cosmopolitan as Smith understandably doesn’t want to mistaken for a sadly typical example of his American generation—and see my reflections on the Gen-X conservatism here—it’s probably time to drop the “I’m not a conservative” schtick and either make peace with what the left actually believes or make peace with what kind of conservative you actually are. First of all, “But I’m not...!” is a weak defense against an imputation; better to just own the name, wear it with pride. Second, while different thinkers have thought about it in different ways, and we can probably turn up this or that quote from Engels or somebody as a counterexample, still, overall, “[t]here is a stratum of the human that is deeper than politics” is inconsistent with the left’s fundamental commitments: that existence precedes essence, that history is the work of human hands, that what we erroneously call human nature alters in time through social conflict and contestation (this is the dialectic), that humanly-produced economic and social circumstances shape and delimit the human character (this is materialism). Whether you take this “deeper stratum” to be the nature we share with the animals or to be the eternal breath of God, you still think there’s something that social conflict and contestation can’t reach, that humanly-produced economic and social circumstances can’t alter, or that alter these circumstance from outside the human. And if you think art is more profound and moving insofar as it seeks and finds this limit to our conscious agency, rather than “laying bare the device” by which the merely social is naturalized or divinized as this supposed limit, then you are practically the definition of the aesthetic reactionary—probably worse than a fascist, who is at least properly political in his history-making jackboot swagger, as Adorno’s foremost American critical legatee claims:
What Paul DeMan clearly was, however, as the articles testify, can be seen to be a fairly unremarkable specimen of the then conventional high-modernist aesthete, and the apolitical aesthete at that. This is clearly a very different matter from Heidegger (although it seems unquestionable that the twin Heidegger and DeMan “scandals” have been carefully orchestrated to delegitimate Derridean deconstruction). Heidegger may have been “politically naiive,” as they like to say, but he was certainly political, and believed for a time that the Hitlerian seizure of power was a genuine national revolution that would result in a moral and social reconstruction of the nation. As rector of Freiburg University, and in the best reactionary and McCarthyite spirit, he worked at purging the place of its doubtful elements (although one should remember that genuinely radical or leftist “elements” were very scarce in the German university system of the 1920s, compared to the Hollywood of the 1940s or the Federal Republic of the 1970s). His ultimate disappointment with Hitler was shared by a number of people on the revolutionary (anticapitalist) left within National Socialism, who failed for some time to understand Hitler’s pragmatic position as a moderate or centrist or his crucial relationship to big business. I know I will be misunderstood if I add that I have some sneaking admiration for Heidegger’s attempt at political commitment, and find the attempt itself morally and aesthetically preferable to apolitical liberalism (provided its ideals remain unrealized).
