#Just wanted to rant about four

Ok so I have something to say.

Four deserves more attention.

Yep I said it. I know he's gotten some pretty good panels and of course the colors scene from that one chapter. But I don't see alot of stuff on him, I know he's got his own small comunity and ofc I do see some good art of him. But like he just doesn't get enough attention to me in comparison to say Wild or Twilight. I know that their games are quite popular, and well Wild is a melting pot of trauma. But Four has trauma too, I mean how would you feel if you got split into four pieces? Imagine how difficult it must have been to figure out. You are four different people with their own thought and emotions. And I bet that there was some memory problems with others getting some while different colors not having the same memory. Not to metion Ezlo, who was a good friend, and maybe even a father figure. Losing him must have been very hard, and the Minish who Four probably loved to be around. The constant fear of maybe one day waking up and not being able to see his small friends anymore must be a hard weight to have. I'm not to sure about this but I think in the game, Ezlo or someone says that for his deeds the Minish will always be visible to him. But I have yet to play the game so I'm not 100% certain.[work in progress in trying to get the game]

I know that he can still see them though, in the one of the small side stories for the comic it shows Four telling Wind about the Minish and what they do. He also holds out a Minish too. Also I just wanna say that that Minish has my heart and idk if it will give it back

But yeah, I just wanted to rant about the guy since he's one of my babies and I want to hug the colors.

Thinking of Cass and Damian got me thinking of the New 52 and how the dynamic between Batgirl and Robin there is even more proof of the travesty that was Babsgirl. She's been the longest running Batgirl to Damian's Robin, has witnessed most of the events of his life as Robin and yet their dynamic is just... A nothing burger. She's there in batfamily group reactions in the New 52 as the most heinous use of the Smurfette Principle I've seen in a long while. Tim isn't Tim, Dick isn't fully treated as Bruce's son, Jason exists mostly to say funny one liners, and yet despite the shallow characterisation there are still moments and events you can point to and say look. This happened. They interacted with Damian and it meant something. With Babsgirl? Nothing. How can there be anything when they're shoving a grown woman into a role she's outgrown for years now and forcing her to be the Batgirl of a preteen Robin? Her original Robin gets his own mantle, gets to be an adult with a legacy. She's shoved back into this role she doesn't fit in and because they know damn well she doesn't fit in it and they're just doing it for misogyny, they don't even try to make Batgirl and Robin a thing. Any interaction they had during the new 52 was so unremarkable and flavourless, devoid of character and heart, that I've never seen a single panel of the two of them in my 16 years as a DC fan.

Steph had a 24 issue batgirl run where she interacted with Damian a few times. Cass got even less than that with a six issue miniseries to bond with him. And yet the characterisation, writing and dynamic created in those stories was interesting, entertaining and impactful enough to last in the fandom for YEARS when Cass and Steph got erased. When you think of Damian's big sister you think of Steph, Cass, Maya etc long before you think of Babsgirl.

It's just infuriating to me. All those years of potential Batgirl and Robin stories wasted on a duo with as much cultural impact on the Batgirl and Robin team up as the James Cameron Avatar movies had on the word Avatar. All so they could erase the women of the batfam and reduce the sole one remaining down to The Girl Bat. Yeah whatever she was there in Damian's life when Steph and Cass weren't why am I supposed to care when her standing there gave me nothing to work with emotionally compared to a single conversation Steph or Cass had with Damian back in 2011. Compared with them or even Oracle Babs, I care about Babsgirl and Damian's dynamic and bond as much as DC and it's writers do. Which is to say, not at all.

More TADC Episode 4 spoilers because I wanna point out a few more things.

Let's see... how should I approach this? I know, let's start with Gangle taking her mask (that Zooble gave her in the beginning of the episode) off after she walked outta Spudsy's!

This entire scene... First of all, THE LIGHTING, THE MUSIC, THE SLOW MOTION ANIMATION, ALL OF IT!! I LOVE IT ALL!

Feel free to correct me, but if I'm looking at this right, then this entire scene is her feeling free, free from not wearing a happy mask, free to completely feel... something, anything else rather being forced to put on a happy face all the time!

Something tells me that in her past manager job made her to constantly have a mask on all the time (except she wouldn't have an actual mask like in the Digital Circus). Even if it's for a brief moment, she looks, well I wouldn't say happy, perhaps more relief(?), that she doesn't have to wear the mask at that moment. (And there's most likely a lot more going on here that I definitely missed, so feel free to add on in the comments/notes).

This is more of a side thing, but I actually like seeing Gangle's drawings. In this one, we can see that she was inspired by a powerful, magical anime girl (like Sailor Moon). Perhaps this is one of her OCs, or her own persona of herself as a magical anime girl. (I mean, it's obvious from the training video that she likes manga/anime and wanted to be a webcomic artist in reality, but that never happened).

Personally, I like that Gangle can talk to Zooble, and how they're able to give her the comfort that she needs. Maybe Zooble can see themselves in Gangle in some ways, and maybe that's how they can relate/understand her in more ways than the rest of the gang can. (And the fact that Zooble never told Gangle that she's annoying or prefer her without her comedy mask on?? They're definitely more a real friend to Gangle than Ragatha could be.)

I feel so bad for infodumping so frequently to my friend but they're literally the only person I don't feel weird ranting about things to because everyone else, in one way or another, from here has a fandom I tie to them. And if my rant isn't about that fandom then I just... don't rant at them.

Unless you're looki, mairen, neon and to a similar extent conner. Those four get special treatment because we've either been mutuals for long enough, or spoken enough, or both that they've evolved beyond "fandom friend" to "I'd loose sleep talking to you if either of us needed it" friends and I wouldn't change it for the world.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on S1 of ST being a tragedy! No main character dies, so I never thought of it that way before

I mean, nobody has to die for a story to be a tragedy (at least, in the modern definition. I'm pretty sure '(almost) everybody dies' is a requirement of Greek tragedies and Renaissance revenge tragedies). But also, no main character dies in season one...if you take season one as part of a series. Which it wasn't originally conceived as.

I am not going looking for copies of the original pitch bible, because I am lazy, and also I only saw them floating around this webbed site. But the show changed a lot from the initial pitch (Joyce had a Long Island accent! Lucas' parents were divorcing! Murray was there and named Terry Ives! Most of what ended up in Hopper's character originally belonged to Mr. Clarke! The original pitch bible is fascinating). And part of the original pitch was a proposal for possible sequels.

The Duffers' proposal for a possible sequel was "It's ten years later, and Eleven is dead".

So that's the setup. Everything that came after season one was made up wholecloth after season one was a hit and people wanted more, but also people loved the adorable little psychic murder child (cue the Duffers shockedpikachu.jpg) and Netflix obviously recognised it would be a bad call to make a new season without her in it. So it makes sense to take season one as a unit, as a self-contained story on its own. You can also take it as part of a whole, but it makes sense to read it first as a complete story. Especially given the thematic drift of later seasons and the way they are...I'm just going to say it, each new season is very much added-on to what came before rather than being built on foundation that the earlier season(s) laid. It is very clear there was never a planned five-season story arc from the beginning. (This isn't necessarily always a bad thing, when it comes to sequels, but it does mean it makes sense to 'read' each season as its own thing.)

Okay, now that we've established all of that. Season one has one very clear goal, one very clear stake for the characters: save Will Byers from the Upside Down. (I like this. It makes the stakes both extremely high and extremely personal, it makes it very easy to understand each character's motivation, it also keeps the stakes grounded in reality. I like this a lot.) And by the end of the season, that goal is accomplished. So at first blush, you're right, season one doesn't look like a tragedy.

But when you start to unpack it a little, you start to see just how many important things were lost along the way. It's most glaringly obvious with Mike and El, with Nancy and Barb. The whole Wheeler family is fractured down the middle, with Mike and Nancy on one side and Ted, Karen, and Holly on the other, and Karen, who's been trying so hard the whole time to be part of her children's lives and understand what's going on with them, is aware of the ever-expanding gulf between them but will never be able to cross it, and will never fully know why. Hopper's finally managed to snatch a kid out of the jaws of death, save a woman he obviously cares about from the pain of losing a child, and Joyce has finally had someone believe her, support her, trust her. But it became blindingly obvious to me on my fourth rewatch that Hopper's plan, from the moment he went to leave the middle school gym, was always to trade El for Will. And that decision (and the fact that Joyce obviously understands that he did something to get the lab to let them go after Will, but she obviously doesn't dare press him on what) has broken her trust in him, and left him with what looks like an equally heavy burden of guilt as what he was carrying before. The lab stays open. The government gets away with everything. No one will ever know the true extent of the hurt they've caused.

And in the end, none of it even saved Will. He's back. He's alive. But he's spitting slugs in the sink. He's permanently marked by the Upside Down, and by trying to hide it from his family, he's putting a crack down the centre of them, as well. They're losing Will, just as surely as they had when they thought he was dead, just without him going anywhere.

And there's still a hole in the world.

The fragile bonds of community, the things that people share in common, the way catastrophe can bring people together and bring out the very best in them, are the major thematic threads woven through season one. Human connection is the only thing that can change what seems inevitable, the only thing that can bring back what's seemingly lost forever.

And it's still not enough to protect anyone from the random tragedy of the world.

The love was there. The love mattered. The love bent the entire course of the world around itself.

And it still wasn't quite enough.

If that's not a tragedy, then I don't know what is.
