what’s the best era for kaiju movies? i’ve been working my way through the showa stuff, and have gotten up to gamera vs barugon, and, like, i’ve enjoyed a lot of it but it hasn’t quite clicked yet. the kaiju on kaiju fights in particular still seem ropey—do they get better as they figure out the techniques, or is this the peak and i’m just not that big of a kaiju guy?
Okay in Gamera vs Barugon’s defense it had the unenviable task of choreographing two quadrupedal monsters fighting. There is a reason most Kaiju suits are bipedal.
I don’t know if it is technically good, the Showa Gamera movies are caked in nostalgia for me, but the fights do genuinely get more creative and dynamic as they go on.
It honestly just depends on the movie, some have really fun choreography some are just kinda eh. For Godzilla at least a decent part of it is the (incredibly helpful budget saving) decision to have the fights occur mostly in clearings away from anything that helps provide the scale and awe needed for such a spectacle.
The technique definitely does solidify as time goes on, but a long list of behind the scenes stuff meant that the budget won’t end up there with it.

okay but can we talk abt the minecraft movie’s complete erasure of the personality of steve???? like that is not even steve minecraft that is just fucking jack black with a blue shirt on.
have yall have seen the cinematic trailers for mc updates? steve literally has a completely different personality. steve is just a silly lil guy. hes just a curious dude who loves building and exploring! hes not jack black, or a wackjob who went crazy from being isolated for too long. he loves and parktakes happily in the world hes in.
i know we only saw one real scene, but i can already tell that jack black is not going to be playing steve minecraft, he is just going to be playing jack black. its so intensely disappointing when they had the opportunity to employ a new actor to bring to light like. imo steve minecraft should have been cast as just an average looking guy. just some random dude. BC THATS LITERALLY WHAT HE IS.
anyways tdlr the real steve minecraft just simply just a lil guy and he is NOT JACK BLACK

Vincent Price on filming The Fly (1958)
"We never could get it all out," said Vincent Price of the scene's filming. "We were playing this kind of philosophical scene, and every time that little voice [of the fly] would say 'Help me! Help me!' we would just scream with laughter. It was terrible. It took us about 20 takes to finally get it."

I know that animation in big blockbuster films is like not ever supposed to look good anymore and whatever, like it's almost intentionally bad, but from an artistic standpoint, can you imagine how hard it would have slayed if they made the minecraft movie purely with pixel animation?

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio versus all the other iterations that have come out recently really exemplifies the issue that at a fundamental level the desire to roll out A list actor filled cash grabs of live action remakes of old movies does not understand the nature of media. Certain forms of art- and I feel that I cannot stress this enough- do not mesh well onto a different form of art. Sometimes they can, and it’s wonderful, but very often I’m finding that a lot of remakes are missing the point of how animation is its own medium, stop motion is its own medium, video games and books and even television vs movies are all their own mediums. You really have to know when you’re making something if this is the right form of it, because if not it ends up looking cheep despite the millions of dollars spent to create the whole fucking thing. And a little bit of love and creativity doesn’t hurt either. I think studios to a large degree underestimate how much the creator’s passion imbued in a film translates through the screen to an audience, because we really can feel it. Sure, we all watch shitty TV and moves once in a while, but when something actually moving comes around there’s never any doubt of how masterful it is. And you just don’t ever really get that with soulless billion dollar remakes. Anyways Guillermo del Toro fucking rocks and everybody should go watch Pinocchio.

I saw The Creator the other day, and honestly Crowley and 5 year old Jesus roadtripping around trying to find Aziraphale would be a great time
