The Famicom/NES port of Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord (the first game in the series) was co-developed and published by ASCII Entertainment (aka Nexoft) and released in 1987. Jun Suemi designed the monsters for this port and his illustrations grace the trading cards shown here (a partial set only). From my understanding, one random card was included when you bought the game in Japan.

The “Illustrated Fantasy Book Guide” is a magazine-format book (or mook) released in 1989 by the publisher of ファミコン必勝本 “Famicon Winning Book”, an NES gaming magazine. The mook lists 37 works of fantasy originally written in English except for “Ficciones” by Borges. The editors of “Famicon Winning Book” were fond of the Wizardry port to the NES, which is my explanation for their interest in this stuff. In any case, they created the best Appendix N so to speak of fantasy translated into Japanese that I have yet found. The Japanese titles are provided below to aid the online searches of would-be buyers.

Sega Mega Drive - The Hybrid Front

One of the few Mega Drive games that didn't work on any emulators to date (the last time I tried to play it was September 2006) and one of the hardest to find releases as well. You may have seen the introduction via emulation or at least half of it, since that's all that will play, and wondered what the game is all about. Well, a game with such a stylish intro as The Hybrid Front is bound to ooze quality, right? Well...... Maybe if you are into battle simulations, this game will ooze quality, but to me, it oozes plenty of waiting and wasted time. The in-game graphics are pretty basic, to be honest, and quite a disappointment after such a nice introduction. Character designs are really nice however thanks to the work of Suemi Jun, one of Japan's leading illustrators.

If war simulations are your thing, then by all means, jump at the chance to buy this game. If not, then don't bother.
