the heat is harsh given it’s mid july in north carolina, but it’s easier to endure when you two share freshly-squeezed strawberry lemonade flavored kisses whenever possible. all while you look at him with heart eyes, adoring the way he lets you cling to him.

whether it’s his arm or his shirt, he always makes sure there’s no chance in hell he’ll lose his baby in the crowds.

as the sun sets, you realize your little day out is coming to an end. it takes everything in you not to pout— you know rafe hates when you do since he works so hard to give you everything you have.

“had so much fun today, rafey…” you tug his arm a bit, trying your best not to sound whiney, “but we haven’t been on the ferris wheel yet, y’know…”

“alright, baby.” rafe can’t argue with such a simple request.

he’s not a monster, however he does have his conditions— “but we gotta get back home right after. got work early in the morning, sweetheart. you know that.”

“i know, i know.”

so you two end up on the ferris wheel. so many feet up that you can see every single light and bit of bright neon below you. from the food stands to the rides ‘n games. your tennis shoe covered feet are in rafe’s lap, while he rubs your calves and thighs— taking in the real view, which is you clutching your new favorite stuffie to your chest, face illuminated with splotches of different colors and your eyes fixed on the scene below you two.

he loves you more than he can stand.

maybe that’s why his hand goes a little farther than it should. his digits end up pressing against the front of your shorts, daring to rub over your clit through the material… only after squeezing up your thighs enough to make your breathing all huffy, of course.

your head finally snaps towards him— “daddy, we can’t here…”

he pouts back at you, “can touch what’s mine, can’t i?”

at that your knees spread a part a little wider, making room for his hand. he hums in approval, and huffs out a laugh when your thighs jolt as he applies just enough pressure to have you softly mewling.

“if you can cum f’me by the time this ride’s over, maybe we can stay out a little later— how’s that sound, babydoll?”

Weinersmith and Boulet’s “Bea Wolf”

On July 14, I'm giving the closing keynote for the fifteenth HACKERS ON PLANET EARTH, in QUEENS, NY. Happy Bastille Day! On July 20, I'm appearing in CHICAGO at Exile in Bookville.

Bea Wolf is Zach Weinersmith and Boulet's ferociously amazingly great illustrated kids' graphic novel adaptation of the Old English epic poem, which inspired Tolkien, who helped bring it to popularity after it had languished in obscurity for centuries:

Boy is this a wildly improbable artifact. Weinersmith and Boulet set themselves the task of bringing Germanic heroic saga from more than a thousand years ago to modern children, while preserving the meter and the linguistic and literary tropes of the original. And they did it!

There are some changes, of course. Grendel – the boss monster that both Beowulf and Bea Wulf must defeat – is no longer obsessed with decapitating his foes and stealing their heads. In Bea Wulf, Grendel is a monstrously grown up and boring adult who watches cable news and flosses twice per day, and when he defeats the kids whose destruction he is bent upon, he does so by turning them into boring adults, too.

And Bea Wulf – and the kings that do battle with Grendel – are not interested in the gold and jewels that the kings of Beowulf hoard. In Bea Wulf, the treasure is toys, chocolate, soda, candy, food without fiber, television shows without redeeming educational content, water balloons, nerf swords and spears, and other stuff beloved of kids and hated by parents.

That substitution is key to transposing the thousand-year-old adult epic Beowulf for enjoyment by small children in the 21st century. After all, what makes Beowulf so epic is the sense that it is set in a time in which a primal valor still reigned, but it is narrated for an audience that has been tamed and domesticated. Beowulf makes you long for a never-was time of fierce and unwavering bravery. Bea Wulf beautifully conjures the years of early childhood when you and the kids in your group had your own little sealed-off world, which grownups could barely perceive and never understand.

Growing up, after all, is a process of repeating things that are brave the first time you do them, over and over again, until they become banal. That's what "coming of age" really boils down to: the slow and relentless transformation of the mythic, the epic, and the unknowable and unknown into the tame, the explained, the mastered. When you're just mastering balance and coordination, the playground climber is a challenge out of legend. A couple years later, it's just something you climb.

The correspondences between the leeching away of magic lamented in Beowulf and experienced by all of us as we grow out of childhood are obvious in hindsight and surprising and beautiful and bittersweet when you encounter them in Bea Wolf.

This effect owes a large debt to Boulet's stupendous artwork. Boulet brings a vibe rarely seen in American kids' illustration, owing quite a lot to France's bande dessinée tradition. Of course, this is a Firstsecond book, and they established themselves as an exciting and fresh kids' publisher in the USA nearly 20 years ago by bringing some of Europe's finest comics to an American audience for the first time. The utter brilliance of Bea Wulf is as much due to the things it preserves from the original epic as it is to the updates and changes. Weinersmith has kept the Old English tradition of alliteration, right from the earliest passages, with celebrations of heroes like "Tanya, treat-taker, terror of Halloween, her costume-cache vast, sieging kin and neighbor, draining full candy-bins, fearing not the fate of her teeth. Ten thousand treats she took. That was a fine Tuesday."

Weinersmith also preserves the kennings – the elaborate figurative compound phrases that replace nouns – that turn ordinary names and places into epithets at you have to riddle out, like calling a river "the sliding sea."

These literary devices, rarely seen today, are extremely powerful, and they conjure up the force and mystique that has kept Beowulf in our current literary discourse for more than a millennium. They also make this a super fun book to read aloud.

When Jim Henson was first conceiving of Sesame Street, he made a point of designing it to have jokes and riffs that would appeal to adults, even if some of the nuance would be lost on kids. He did this because he wanted to make art that adults and kids could enjoy together, both because that would give adults a chance to help kids actively explore the ideas on-screen, but also because it would bring some magic into those adults' lives.

This is a very winning combination (not for nothing, it's also the original design brief for Disneyland). Weinersmith and Boulet have produced a first-rate work of adult and kid literature, both a perfect entree to Beowulf for anyone contemplating a dive into old English epic poetry, and a kids' book full of booger jokes and transgressive scenes of perfect mischief.

Marie Moreau -

- marie is pretty normal about halloween, she doesn't get crazy festive about it, it's just a holiday to dress up and get candy or get drunk

– that being said, if you care about the holiday a lot then she will go along with you on it and do anything you want to do

– she wouldn't dress up if she wasn't going out anywhere like to a party or another outing, but she might put a hat on or something to hand out candy to kids

– marie doesn't really enjoy horror movies a lot, mainly thinks the majority of them are dumb and would rather watch just something fall themed and not a horror movie

– however she does love the candy you buy for you two, and will eat most of it before deciding to actually make food because if not she will throw up from eating so much sugar

Jordan Li -

- loves halloween with their whole heart and more, it's their favorite holiday for real

– they wouldn't completely disagree with matching costumes if it's cool, like a couple from a famous movie or something

– jordan will definitely take you to a halloween party to have a fun time together and drink and smoke while dancing

– they are totally going to be complimenting you non stop throughout the night, you just look so good and they love you a lot so obviously they're gonna tell you how good you look

– they will be going out trick or treating with you despite their age it doesn't matter they want candy and they will be getting their candy one way or another

Emma Meyer -

- it will be literally july and emma will already be organizing matching halloween costumes for you and her

– she will 100% choose one of those dumb ones like an angel and devil

– she'd rather hand out candy to kids than go to a party or just watch scary movies with you claiming she won't be scared then is scared shitless when the movie starts

– emma made you help her put up decorations as soon as october hit the first day, and she has a lot of decorations and she is determined to put them all up

– you will be carving pumpkins whether you want to or not, despite how messy it gets, emma adores the tradition of it and makes hers look all cute and pretty somehow

Cate Dunlap -

- cate isn't really big on halloween, she doesn't like going to dumb parties where everyone is in costumes and would rather spend it inside with you

– she will refuse to dress up unless you literally beg her just for fun and for pictures, she reluctantly agrees but it can't be stupid

– cate doesn't particularly enjoy horror movies, but will watch the b-rated dumb ones with you to make you happy that you're watching a festive movie

– the most decorations she likely has is a ghost hanging on the door so people can see, yeah, that's it, literally

– cate only eats candy sometimes, and when she does it's not a lot, so you’ll end up having to give the rest to random kids that show up or walk by

Sam Riordan -

- poor boy doesn't completely understand halloween at first, he doesn't get why dressing up in costumes, getting candy and going to parties is such a big deal

– thankfully you're there to help him with that and show that halloween is a fun holiday

– it's mainly spent at home in onesies watching horror movies and waterworld cause that's his favorite movie while eating expensive candy you bought

– sam found out he loves horror movies, his favorites are the nightmare on elm streets both for how dumb silly they are but also the cool kills in the later movies though he hates the third movie for obvious reasons

– he will eat all the candy you buy in one night i’m dead serious you’ll wake up the next morning and sam is passed out in a sugar coma and won't get up from eating so much candy

pro tip: shove a sugar cube in the cooter to flavor yourself for your s/o. even do it with other candies. change it up a little for the season! easter? cadbury egg. 4th of july? watermelon jolly rancher. halloween? pumpkin spice. christmas? shove a whole candycane up there. werewolf? bullion cube. plant monster? get some nitrogen fertilizer so he can fertilize you, baby. tentacles? good thing he likes anchovies... vampire? you got that built in once a month.

Thanks so much for the helpful tips! in my experience barbeque sauce also works pretty well if you don't have bullion cubes as far as werewolves go, I'll have to give these other ones a try!

ill give some super basic descriptions under the cut <3 but LOOK AT THEM AUGH

howdy pillar is a caterpillar monster (obviously) and an employee at 'sans grocery store, however he may as well be the owner with how he's maintaining it. he's fully expecting to become the owner one day. climbing the corporate ladder n all that! sans however is too lazy to make anything official.

poppy is a bird monster (also obviously) who works at the diner! she likes to bake as a hobby and is very good at it, but is far too anxious to start any business of her own. she likes to simply exist... make cookies for her friends.

sally is a lollipop/candy monster, sweet as sugar, who works as the school play teacher! despite her smaller size, she's loud and boisterous, and honestly would prefer to break into the bigger theatrical space - but for now, she'll have to prove herself by making her own plays and directing musicals for the school!

julie is a satyr monster who does a bit of everything at hometown - it isn't unusual to see her picking up oddjobs in every profession in the small town or even starting up her own activities for fun! it's never a dull day when julie gets up to something to bring the town together, whether it's festivals (just Big Parties Outdoors) or food stands!

frank is a vampire bat monster who lives with his husband eddie in their shared home-turned-post office. he works at the library part-time as a librarian, though his passion lies in bug collecting and teaching those curious about bugs as an entomologist. he's often dragged into julie's shenanigans to make sure her plans are reasonable and don't include her spending her life savings on colourful chalk.

eddie is a scarecrow monster who lives with his husband frank in their shared home-turned-post office. he doesn't have any employees working for him (aside from julie occasionally deciding to. help??? but who knows how useful that help is) so he does everything on his own as hometown's solitary mailman. he overworks himself quite a bit, and it doesn't help his memory problems makes it hard to keep track of all the mail, but he's dedicated to his job fully.

wally is a human! he is very normal and trustworthy. :) and definitely not opening up fountains to bring a certain entity into the real world, of course not.

barnaby is a canine monster and a self-proclaimed one-dog circus who performs for money. he at first simply visited hometown as a traveller, but found a new home there and has been living there ever since. he's often compared to sans due to the both of them having laid back dispositions and a knack for puns, however barnaby doesn't see it. they're obviously nothing alike, come on now.

Yoongi lets out an inhuman screech. 

He’s holding his sweater in his hands, nude from the waist up interrupted by his changing from what you just said. Staring at you open-mouthed while Jungkook rolls in the remnants of your nest. Remnants because you honestly hadn't put it together much after Namjoon's rut. 

You’ve been spending the last few weeks slowly bringing everything upstairs, alternating between sleeping spots, not a single one of them exactly feeling right. Last night you spent your first night upstairs with Jimin, Jungkook, and Tae. Four pups all cute and nesty with the rest of the Halloween candy between the lot of you in multicolored bowls. 

Yoongi had gotten to watch as you all giggled and completely abused the projector he’d installed for a movie night of the Addams family and some horror movie that you’d changed within the first 15 minutes. Too scary. 

There are more and more moments where he gets to appreciate his hard work these days. He savors them whenever he can. He’d been a little worried that the bed would be too big or too small for the height of you. But it looks just the right size. Just enough space for the others. 

After you’d fallen asleep, he’d carefully tiptoed around you and removed the bowls of candy, kissing each of your heads like a special spell to guard it from monsters and cousin it.

sorry im coping with aus again oopsie daisy. anyway here's my take on a fantasy au

it all started with me rewatching the D&D movie and thinking "hm. what (broad) classes would the neighbors have?"

and after much thinking i came to the conclusion: Barnaby = Bard / Eddie = Paladin / Sally = Sorcerer / Julie = fighter / Frank = monk / Howdy = Artificer / Poppy = Healer / Wally = 'Wizard'

those seem fitting! BUT i don't like restrictions or rules so in this very light worldbuilding for a casual (strongly glaring at myself here) CASUAL au, it's only dnd-esque. not actually dnd yk yk

in my head, they're not technically puppets for this au. they're flesh and blood, they've got bones, etc. they're actual Creatures, though they still look like Them! Julie's still pink w/ candy-corn-horns! Frank is still a gray tube! Barnaby is a big blue dog! they're just... not puppets. it's the same for the other beings in this fantasy world - they all keep the style, but they're all flesh n' blood if that makes sense. a cartoony fantasy world

so they have their little found family adventuring group titled, of course, The Neighborhood. because when they were first forming, Wally went "oh! are we a neighborhood? i've always wanted neighbors!" and it Stuck. so they all lovingly refer to each other as neighbors, even though the closest they get to being actual neighbors is pitching their tents next to each other & staying at an Inn in neighboring rooms

like your classic group of adventurers, they're almost constantly on the move. the longest they stay in one place is a couple of months - the rest of the time they're wandering! they take quests, get roped into general Shenanigans, etc. they adventure! and get into a lot of battles of varying severity

so Barnaby is still kiiiiind of a bard? best i can describe him is jack-of-all-trades moral support! he provides battle music, keeps the mood light, and stands off to the side to offer quips and tips. he prefers not to fight, and only Gets Involved when the others need Backup. even then, he usually takes the role of defending his neighbors. he has a good eye for whether or not physical support is needed - he never needs to be asked when there's a legitimate need for him! unless he's thoroughly distracted from the goings-on. he does have magic, but it's more for show / defense-based

Eddie's still pretty classically a paladin. healing powers, armor, there to be on the front lines and Protect! the group's sword and shield! he technically serves a god but he forgot who <3 he just makes the occasional general offering and mumbles some vague prayer. he's super friendly! super helpful! super willing to dive into the line of fire! Will disregard his own safety without a second thought! his magic is pretty much restricted to healing, and it's weak healing at that (maybe because he can't properly serve his god...), so it's mostly good for quick mid-battle heals and little wounds. temporary fixes!

Sally has innate fire/light magic, and she's very showy with it! she puts Flair and Pizazz into all of her casts and is very dramatic on the battlefield - she manages to turn her fights into a performance. She tag-teams keeping the Neighborhood entertained with Barnaby. he handles the humor/lightheartedness, she handles the escapism/encouragement. she writes scripts & stories in her off-time, and often reads them (or spins a new one) after dinner. when they have weeks / month breaks in one spot, sometimes she'll recruit local thespians to create a play

Frank is all about that hand-to-hand combat babey! he wants to feel bones break under his fists! he wants those split knuckles! he very often starts fights, and even more often finishes them - what he lacks in raw power he makes up for in vicious tenacity. he just Keeps On Going! he seconds as the group's Knowledge Guy. while his hobby is studying insects, he also catalogues/studies monsters and enemies and terrain so that the Neighborhood can always be prepared. the only time he stays out of fights is when he's researching or note-taking. he tries to micromanage the battle from afar anyway

Julie is like... put a druid, a fighter, and a barbarian in a blender. she's got a big sword! she's got seemingly endless energy in battle! she can talk to plants, especially flowers! her flora magic is very minor, so it's not like she's making giant roots burst out of the ground and strangle people. but plants can give her information, and if she asks nicely and they feel like it, sometimes they'll help her out. in battle she's a force to be reckoned with! nothing will stop her and her sword! she's usually the second (closely following Frank, with Eddie hot on her heels) Neighbor charging into battle - but she's the one with the stellar war cry! & where Sally and Barnaby tend to the Neighborhood's emotional wellbeing & entertainment, Julie keeps things fresh with Physical Activities during their downtime!

Poppy is a powerful healer! she draws on an individual's energy (often taps into her own as well) to convert it into healing power. it's draining but it's damn good healing! she also takes the role of the Neighborhood's cook (the others still like to help, especially Frank who is essentially her sous-chef) and makes sure they're all healthy. she hangs back during battles, waiting to (and hoping that she doesn't have to) heal a wounded Neighbor. if one of them is badly hit, she forces herself to run into battle and drag them to safety before working on their injury. she has a tiny bit of illusion magic, which she'll cast from afar to assist her Neighbors. she tries not to use it outside of emergencies - it takes a lot of energy, which she tries to conserve just in case.

Howdy has Zero Magic! none! four hands and none of them are magical! however, he's a damn good inventor & a whiz at potion making. he can Use magical items like there's no tomorrow - he just can't wield it himself. he supplies the group with potions, helpful items, all sorts of goodies - given that they can trade for it with anything he'd accept in-canon. the only exception is when they're mid-battle - he hands stuff out when needed without haggle. he supplies the group with their cash when they're not getting it from looting/quests - he has a magic backpack that can unfold into a fully-stocked merchant stall! he sells at towns, on the road, anywhere he can! In battle he hangs back with Poppy and, yes, supplies items, but he also uses ranged attacks - magical weapons that cast for him, magic 'bombs', that sort of thing! but there's a little secret - he's the Neighborhood's secret weapon. he invented fantasy guns! four magic revolvers that, when the 'second safety' is turned off, multiply into a giant clusterfuck of guns (with ammo ranging from magic 'bullets' to essentially rocket launchers). unfortunately he can only use this setting once & for a limited time before the guns overload & have to be manually repaired. so he either uses them off of the first safety (i.e, they're 'normal'), or not at all. you know shit is Really hitting the fan when he joins a fight

and Wally! Wally Wally Wally... you may have noticed that i put his class 'wizard' in quotes. that's because he says he's a wizard, but he's not! he just says he's one due to the automatic stigma and fear of what he really is - a Warlock! his patron is Home, an eldritch horror that many would classify as a demon. they have a very special, codependent pact that neither of them can live without - Wally wears their 'seal' as a house-shaped pendant on a choker (necklace) hidden under his clothes. Home is extraordinarily powerful, but Wally barely taps into that power. he has a grimoire that Home inscribed with a bunch of sigils that convert into spells when drawn & then cast in the air. the only other powers he uses are seeing-in-the-dark, seeing-magic, and opening teleportation doors! Wally can't sleep, but he can doze - though he's never fully unaware of his surroundings (its kind of like how dolphins only sleep with one half of their brain). he still eats with his eyes, which both feeds him & acts as a form of providing daily energy to Home, since Home can't exactly consume souls every day. If Wally uses too much magic, he has to rest inside of Home's house-form, which is the only time he actually fully sleeps. no one knows about Home, or that Wally is lying about his wizard status.

Home is a lovecraftian being with three forms. the first is the lowest power level - a cute one-room house with Eyes! i.e: Home Classic! Wally's pendant unfolds into it, and it's the main way Wally and Home physically interact & communicate. the second is possession - if Wally explicitly allows it, Home can completely take over his body and kind of 'tuck him away' to have a nice deep nap while Home takes the reins (Home can technically force this, but it's very difficult and would not go over well w/ Wally - it would also be an unstable possession). the third is Home's true form - a massive shadowy eldritch monster made of writhing darkness and nightmares that no one in their right mind would look at, let alone fight. Home has very complicated feelings about Wally & the Neighborhood. they are also, quite literally, Wally's heart - which is part of their pact.

i have some scene ideas & little Plot Concepts (most notably the times the Neighborhood learns two Very Big Secrets about Wally, one of which being the warlock/Home reveal).

but yeah that's moooostly it. basic stuff yk, not very in depth! just fun things to feed my maladaptive daydreaming & escapism

You feel your saliva dribbling down your mouth, gazing at the items shown on the window display case. The smell of sugar and hell, possibly sunshine, was all you could smell in this candy-coated place.

A small jingle alerts you from your daydreaming as a familiar face steps out.

"Oh! It's you, neighbor! How's it going?" Howdy says, his colorful, sparkly gummy form waving at you.

Maybe he was a gummy worm instead of a caterpillar-like...

"Hi, Howdy, just crusin' by!" You walk away, the hunger in your stomach becoming even more unbearable. You should have eaten something before heading outside for the day.

"(Y/N)!"

Brighter than the sun, Sally runs up to you. Dramatically gasping for air.

"Dear friend! You must help me!"

The sugar-cookie star exclaims, "I had asked Wally to finish painting the finishing designs on the stage set for my newest play! But I don't seem to know where he might be, and I have to check in with Julie for costumes."

The star headed, shaped cookie wailed, "I need you to check in on him, for me, please!" Sally begs, you feel your insides turning. But not it guilt.

"O-Of course, you can count on me!"

"Wonderful!" Sally briskly walks over to Julie's house as you made your way to the center of the neighborhood.

The red frosted gingerbread house sqeaks at your presence. Alerting the owner to appear and greet you happily.

"Ah, neighbor! I'll be right out, let me just get what Sally wanted." Wally says from his porch, asking Home to give him a hand.

“This is all so humiliating. Why did I marry you?” you said in a fit of exasperation made worse by him knocking out the cigarette you had pilfered from a waiter.

His mother did not like her, to say the least.

Luca didn’t know what it was, but neither women in his life could ever get along.

He had assumed things would have cooled down by the time his cousin’s wedding came, but he had just been proven wrong.

He loves his mother, he loves you, and yet he is the only thing stopping the two of you getting in a catfight.

His mother had correctly guessed you had not been a virgin on your wedding night, you had taken offense and before you could reach across the table to throttle her, he made up some bullshit excuse to get some air.

You needed a cigarette, to scratch that itch withdrawal was giving you.

But the two of you had promised to quit smoking, your son’s health trumped all, but you so desperately needed a smoke.

“You don’t mean that.” Luca dismissed your rather hurtful words and offered you a peppermint candy from the stash he kept just for you.

You take it gratefully, but its not enough to make you stop thinking about how badly you need a cigarette…so you pinch yourself.

You had started doing that, not often and always where the gloves cover it and Luca had been completely oblivious to it.

Until now that is.

“Don’t torture yourself… that’s my job.” He says taking both your hands and kissing the spot you had pinched with a wicked look in his pretty green eyes. “If you’re a good girl for me tonight, amore mio, I promise you’ll be rewarded.”
