I think one of the things I love about dustbuddies is the same thing I love in silrah. And also lavenderbudd come to think about it.

Initially you'd think "oh they're totally just professional colleagues. Nothing more, nothing less." and then...things happen. There's that look™, that hand grasp™ (that definitely wasn't casual but trying hard to look like one). So you go over their previous interactions again and watch it closely this time. Could that statement that seemed so professional actually bear a hint of a plea in it? Could that seemingly causally placed hand on the back be a promise of an even lower hand placement later in the privacy of their rooms?

I dunno. There's just something so delicious about watching two professionals trying to act casual and professional in a professional setting but at the same time unable to stop giving each other heart eyes.

“Don’t look.” Julia’s words come out quickly, shoving him towards the bedroom of her flat, without offering anything else in return.  

He’s only been in her flat a mere thirty seconds, there to tell her about a threat, and how much time they are going to spend together. He does not even get the chance to get the words out as her arm tugs him towards the bedroom.  

David’s eyes narrow. “Ma’am.”  

“Don’t look.” The repeat of her words is effortless as she guides him to the room. “Sit.”  

David is good at following her commands, and he sits on the edge of her bed. He is not a stranger in her flat as he once was. He moves through it effortlessly these days. He is, however, still on duty as he watches her exit from the room, his eyes following her.  

He wants to know what she is up to. Julia likes her secrets. He does not believe this is a bad one, though. Not as he can hear the rummaging around the kitchen. He sits as still as he ever does, mind only upon her, nothing else happening in his life. He prefers it in such a way these days – Julia the answer to so much that is going on around them. 

Eyes flicker down to his watch. He’s been sitting there for ten minutes. He is patient, thankfully, but as the curiosity grows, the knot in his stomach tightens, almost a little fearful of where this is heading. His foot taps almost absently as he relaxes from being on her guard all the time. His orders say he is to be there for the remainder of the evening given a threat that has come through. He does not mention he was always going to be sitting in the room. If anything, he will be keeping a very close eye upon her.  

Another ten minutes pass. David tells himself to be still instead of investigating. There is no danger. The flat is thoroughly protected. The sounds are quieter now as he waits. His job has a lot of waiting involved. He looks down at his watch again. If she does not come back within five minutes, he is going to go out there. 

The door opens as soon as the thought comes to him. She has that soft smile on the edge of her lips as she moves towards where he is on the bed. She fits perfectly between his legs. Her hands go on his shoulders, a gentle touch, a tingling going through him as her touch always does, a fire lit in him without her even trying.  

“I know something,” she says, her hands moving to his neck, traveling down to his collarbone, until his tie is in her hand. She tugs at it gently, leaning down, pulling him towards her, lips brushing, “and I have a surprise.” Only when the words are out of her mouth does she seize his lips for a kiss that can only be described as passionate. He aches for more, hands moving to her hips, wanting to pull her atop of him, no longer caring what she’s been up to outside of the door to her bedroom.  

That does not happen when she abruptly pulls away. “Come.”  

A simple command is followed, no choice given as she tugs on his tie, and there are thoughts about that he keeps to himself. He stands and follows her through the door.  

He looks around, focusing on her, before his eyes fall on the table. An eyebrow raises but as a formerly married man he knows a date when he sees one.  

“It is your birthday.” A statement, her eyes studying him, before she moves closer to the table. “I thought we should celebrate.” 

He almost asks how she knows but he doesn’t bother. She has her ways of finding out information just as much as he has his ways of finding out information. “You didn’t have to do this.” 

“I know.” She looks over to him. “I wanted to.”  

His eyes focus on the table. There’s a nice dinner that he assumes is ordered given the lack of mess in the kitchen. There is wine on the table he most certainly should not be drinking given though he is on duty. The candles add a touch that is entirely Julia. He is perhaps most intrigued by the chocolate and strawberries he can see on the counter.  

They sit without much fuss between them.  

“Thank you.” He says quietly. His birthday is not something he fusses over much. With the birth of both of his kids his priorities changed dramatically. His mental state has no space for worrying about birthdays. That does not change how appreciative he is as he takes a bite of the haggis upon his plate.  

“Where did you get this?”  

“I know a place.”  

He smiles as he takes another bite. He lives mostly on takeout, cold pizza, and beer. That’s only when he bothers to eat anything at all, but it tastes as if it was something his mum could have made. Close, at least. It��s a gesture that is not lost on him. His eyes focus upon her more than he focuses upon the food that he clears off his plate.  

“You haven’t touched your wine.” 

“I’m on duty.” 

“Hmm.” She picks up her own glass and takes a sip. “You do many things on duty that I believe your superiors would question.”  

Her tone is a tease, so he grabs the glass without another word. He takes a sip. “I can’t argue with that.” There’s lots of things he cannot argue with.  

There is not much for the two of them to discuss. There is, really. He thinks of a million things he could say to her, but it’s not what he wants now. No talking of work given everything is even work. 

As they finish, she moves to the fridge and pulls out a small cake. He cannot resist the smile that comes upon his lips.  

“This is what I was working on when you came in.”  

“You didn’t want me to see.” 

“Not until I was done.” She places it down in front of him with a singular candle upon it.  

“You made this.” A statement as it looks homemade. She has never struck him as the domestic type. The image of her moving around the kitchen making a cake and then having to frost it only makes him smile. She even goes as far as to write his name on the cake, the edge topped with sliced strawberries. It smells intoxicating in a way only sugar can be.  

“Yes.” 

That does catch him by surprise as she lights it. “Chocolate?” 

“Of course.” She smiles. “Make a wish.” 

His eyes close as he thinks of something to wish for. It’s something simple. Something he refuses to think too much about as he blows the candle out. After all, he wants it to come true. It’s the most like himself he has felt in such a long time.  

“Happy birthday, David.” She whispers into his ear.  

“Thank you, Julia.”  

“Now onto your real gift.” She takes his hand and leads him into the bedroom. No option given. 

“What about the cake?” 

“Later.” A promise. “You will need your stamina.”

I just started watching The Bodyguard on Netflix (I know I’m very late to it) and I couldn’t help but notice, everyone seem to treat PPO’s like garbage (or is it just me?), like the way they get looked at and talked to, they are risking their lives to protect them and still get looked down?

NOT a situation where im like "ok whit = daisuke" no. this is a different situation. their own scenario, trust. XF-Ture Express, despite its reputation for being one of the most reliable delivery services across the galaxy, has a terrible inside system. They have one of the lowest failure rates of the space freighters, being at a whopping 5% chance. Employees are paid a hefty amount, motivated by good working conditions on each ship with quality leisure activities and meal plans. But only the ones who earn it get such treatment. The hierarchy in which employees are forced to participate in never leaves the walls of the building. You do your job right and kill yourself working, you get assigned better ships with better shipments. It is as simple as that. So it is unfathomable when Captain Xander Matthews, considered one of the best, is assigned to a ship that is just barely allowed to launch. The "Fatebringer", is what it is called. It just scraped by inspection and is subpar for an XF-Ture ship, but supposedly it is necessary. Xander's job is not an easy one, but simple enough for someone of his caliber. He is to take this crappy ship, along with a shipment, to the exoplanet where the the better functioning ships are maintained and created. He and his crew will turn in this old junk ship for a sleek, modern one and move the shipment to it. Then on their way back, they will deliver it and return to Earth. Simple, they said. Child's play for a captain with so much experience. So it only makes sense for the best of the best to be assigned with him. Rose Lacroix. Her job is what is called 'the documenter'. She has no real purpose other than to keep track of supplies, as well as record daily minutes regarding every single thing that happens on board that is important to note. Due to her memory, she is considered the best to keep track of large quantities of items/the best to spot minor inconsistencies or things that are misplaced. She only needs to walk around a ship once to get it down properly. She has worked with Xander once before. Arturo Giles. The medic. He is apparently not new to this field despite being so young. He is usually quite unbearable and does not prefer to speak to his fellow employees, as most are deemed "too hideous". Despite his terrible personality, he is undeniably the best medic to have on a long assignment due to his quick efficiency. He claims that one day, the company will realize that he deserves better than what he has. (Despite being named the best medical employee.) He has worked with Rose twice, David once. J Moreno. The best mechanic for any ship, especially one as crap as the Fatebringer. When nothing needs to be fixed, she prefers to help out others if they need it (only if they deserve it, of course.) As much as she would prefer to stay on her own, she knows teamwork always comes first on long hauls. Her true identity is known to the company; they still put her actual name on all official documents and tech. She has to manually hide these things, as well as her ID card. Mariabella Rosales and XF-Ture collaborate a lot for financial purposes. She will advertise them with her existence/commercials/whatever, and they will pay her. And of course, never make J's employment public. If J weren't so good at what she does, they would not have cared. But they really like Mariabella's money so. As of now, Julia Rosales is considered MIA. David Chiem. Xander's co-pilot and good friend. David is usually the morale booster of his crews, always keeping spirits up and energy high despite the monotony of long hauls. He is usually who people will go to for advice or mental health discussions in place of the medic for two reasons: He cannot medically document anything, AND he is just such a fantastic listener! He always knows what to say! Xander and David have lost count of how many shipments they have done together. Teruko Tawaki. The stowaway of the Fatebringer who was not meant to be there. She was never meant to be there.

Teruko is usually assigned co-pilot. She has never worked with anyone else on the ship, so it is unclear whether or not her strange misfortune is known to any of them. Every ship she has ever been on has failed to bring their shipments on time- or at all. She has even seen crew members die in front of her. There have been near crashes, close calls...always when she is there. Nobody can terminate her. She has technically done nothing wrong, and firing her for no reason could mean a lawsuit or her spreading rumors about the company. So when Xander is given his assignment, he can only be dumbfounded when written in pen, he spots it. "Kill Teruko Tawaki. Find a way." And so Teruko is brought onto the ship, unconscious and hidden away. When she awakens, Xander will tell everyone that she is a surprise extra crew member. The excuse is that while she is usually co-piloting, XF-Ture is interested in having Teruko's skills expanded by having her shadowing the best of the best. Teruko, not remembering much, accepts this and trusts Xander. David's true personality is the same in canon: cold, cruel, manipulative. He feels threatened by Teruko's presence. After learning that her usual role is his, his theory is that she snuck onto the ship to prove she is better suited/to get him terminated. He treats her as normal UNTIL the crash. Xander is aware of Teruko's past jobs in vivid detail. He has been given reports, seen the documents...how much happens wherever she goes. He wants to get rid of her as soon as possible to keep the crew safe despite his guilt. Things go smoothly...until he receives word that XF-Ture is done for. It had only been two months, so what happened? The Rosales family suddenly stopped funding them, and everything crumbled after that. Nobody ever realized how much of their funding came from them. Xander felt mild relief. He truly does not want to kill a seemingly innocent woman for the company. After all, if she were truly responsible for any of those terrible things, they would have fired her with no hesitation. There must be a reason why she's still employed. But now they're all out of a job. What does that mean for them? Xander's mental health starts to plummet. Small things on board start to go wrong, and his first paranoid thought is to blame Teruko for being there. He becomes obsessed with reading over the reports from the crews that suffered in her presence. They were right; she's the cause. He confides in David, panicked and drained. Xander was a good man; far too good to kill anyone. Even if the people who told him to do so were technically no longer in charge of them...Teruko still needed to go. There's no reason to do the delivery, and there only thing they can really do is go to the exoplanet to swap out ships for a comfortable ride home. But with Teruko on board, there is no guarantee that they'll even get back to Earth. Xander tells him everything- too much. David decides that Teruko cannot make it back no matter what. Whatever field she gets to next will be riddled with destruction and possibly worse. Everyone here is at the top of XF-Ture, the best in a dead company. It is too late for any of them to climb to the top of another wage slave ladder. So he crashes the ship. Teruko Tawaki must die. If Xander cannot do it, he does not mind staining his filthy hands with more blood. What else happens? Who knows.
