How I go about making [Original] character playlists
someone in a server asked for some help on making OC playlists and I made a think piece basically on how I do it and realized this could help people outside the server so 👍
This is a long post, 1.6k words so it's under a read more.
for character playlists, I make a Venn diagram of like
“Would this character listen to this song vs does this character Actually listen to this genre vs what story is this song telling”
If a song is important to a character/influenced a lot in their making absolutely add it in
that's very obvious but ummm let me use an example song
ok this one. I'm gonna be relating it to Nikki's playlist since it's on there
Would this character listen to this song? Nikki has a darker aesthetic with a lot of gothic influences, both in how they act, dress, and decorate their own house. in this case, Nikki Would listen to this song because it has that general 'dark' theme
Does this character actually listen to this genre? while Nikki has been around for 500ish years, they do listen to modern music and also prefer longer pieces. Nikki does listen to gothic music as they frequent lots of clubs that would play stuff like this. Also, she's canonically a type o negative fan
What story is this song telling? obvs this depends on your interpretation of the song and how this could relate to the character since lalala whole analysis thing I'm not gonna get into. but its generally about a (vampire) woman on Halloween/eve and just how she is. also the whole "loving you was like loving the dead'' thing that relates to another character I'm not gonna mention
The last part that I forgot to talk about but kinda goes into the last one: could you relate this song to that character and have it make sense? both in how it sounds and in lyrics. bc I've found songs that lyrically fit someone Perfectly but then it sounds like shit or it just doesn't fit the character
like ex: Disturbia by Rhianna with Chimera
sound wise it's not like the rest of its playlist but I do have my reason for putting it on there: lyrics that they relate to and because her best friend listens to pop music and would show her this sort of stuff.
I try to have a general Sound for a playlist but obvs there are some outliers 👍
Unfortunately, some songs fit a character really well but they wouldn't exactly listen to it/does nottt fit the general theme of their playlist
example: ayumu's playlist. it has a lot of just Glam music and it features mostly van halen, judas priest, kiss, etc just stuff like that
there's one song, somewhat damaged by Nine Inch Nails, that fits him exceptionally well in terms of lyrics that relate to his backstory and how it's a slow progression with a climax at the very end. but I don’t have it on there because sound wise it would stick out like a sore thumb
Of course, not everyone is gonna have One Set Genre and Sound
and some characters I focus more on different categories
Ex1: Dani's playlist is fully made up of what he listens to and I did that on purpose because she's a character who is veryyyy focused on music [specifically metal] and also one who Makes music in canon. so I focused more on the sound aspect and what he actually listens to but still tried to vaguely match the lyrics to her backstory [and unsurprisingly, a lot of them are about anger in one way or another. while Dani isn't an angry person anymore, she still goes back to it since its an outlet]
Ex2: going back to Nikki's playlist, it's made up of 3 parts.
In the first part, the thing I focused on the most was How people perceive her/how she wants to be perceived. so I tried to go for more 'seductive' songs and also tried to keep a general darker sound.
The second part is stuff that relates to her past/highly personal aspects, which is why its more hidden within, and probably wouldn't notice it if you quickly scrolled; in this one, I stuck to lyrics [and it mostly lined up to what Nikki listens to since their top modern band is Depeche Mode all the way through and for good reason].
The third part is made up of instrumentals, mostly classical music bc well this is what Nikki listened to for most of her life, so I wanted to reflect on it a bit. so here my biggest focus was Sound and trying to fit her theme
Ex3: Andros' playlist
while I of course tried to have a general sound, I purely focused on lore. the order of each song on here is purposeful because it's meant to tell his entire life story within a playlist. kinda hard to talk about it minimally because the only other way is literally sending that director's cut document I have explaining each song and why it's on there in that placement
this was the hardest route imo for a character playlist since its Hard to find stuff that relates to specific experiences, but it's very worth it if you have a character you have a full-on story for 👍
now for actually finding music
One of the first things I figure out when making a character is "If they had a character theme what would it sound like" and/or what bands/genre do they listen to
When I have a theme I usually go off on what I already know and try to see "ok what artist comes up the most for this" and then go to their discography or similar bands [ill send my fav resource for it in a sec]
if you already have a stand name/namesake though, try to stick to that [you don’t have to but its a base you can use]
Here’s my thought process using all that to make a playlist, with our playlist of choice being Jing’s.
Their stand is called I Talk To The Wind, which is a song made by king crimson. so my first thoughts were "ok I’m gonna go through their songs and see what's similar/what I could put on this" and I really only felt like putting Moonchild up next.
next, I was like “ok what's the theme of this character”. The first thing I came up about them was being able to see ghosts so "ok I’m gonna find songs that relate to death, ghosts, and just that general theme" So now I got came back haunted, ghosting, La Mer, I'm looking forward to joining you finally, Bela Lugosi's dead, Otherside, and (don't fear) the reaper. for sounds, I also went on this Halloween ambient noise playlist and added Laila pt1, black venom, and scary spirits
ok, what would they listen to? well, I know that their fav bands are King Crimson, but i also want to add in New Order and someee Bauhaus. so I put in ceremony, procession, burn, etc
and now lore stuff. how do these lyrics relate to their character/what would it mean to them? this usually requires some general lore in hand but you can just listen to songs and be like. hm. it'd be interesting to make this relate to a character so then you go off that. on this category I added: new feeling, macro, introspectre, i get wild/ wild gravity, and who is she ?
obvs your thought process depends on your character and the music you already know
I am insane because I am constantly playing music or otherwise I’d die so I have a lottttttt of music in my mind catalog basically so I usually go off on that
if you want to know more songs and such or know a character would listen to this genre that you're nottt super familiar with here's what i do
try searching for general terms so you pull up playlists on spotify
if you have a song already you can put that bad boy in something like spotalike or any alternative you like
thissss beautiful website https://everynoise.com/
every noise at once lets you scroll through basically every single genre ever and if you click on it you get bands that are part of that genre
something you can also do is use the find artist search engine and see what genres they belong to so you can find similar stuff
obvs theyre not exact butttttt
say i wanna look in the industrial rock genre. if i double-click on it i get to this page
you can use the scan button at the top to get a general sense of the artist [since you egt a sample] and you can go in deep into an artist's discography
i used that website a lotttttttt for tyhis one playlist that is purely sound based/what this character would listen to 100%
but yeah this is my general process on making a character playlist 👍 I’m veryyyy thorough with it and you can literally ask me about any song on any character playlist and i can tell you exactly why i put it on there
is it a little excessive? sure but this is my way of doing it
#happy playlist making and i hope this was helpful ^_^#rhaa talks#playlists#idkl what to tag this actually um#oc help#i guess#Spotify

Headcanon Time!
Here’s a list of applicable headcanons for this blog! It’s pretty long so I’m putting the individual character heacanons under the read more. These are mainly for the Tainted versions.
General
Eden is the oldest, being just as old as the universe, and Isaac+dead counterparts are the youngest at 18.
Out of the humans, Eve is the oldest at 27.
Samson is the tallest while Lilith is the shortest. Maggy comes close second to Sam. (I have no set heights yet)
Blind Bitch Club (aka needs/has glasses): Eve, Jacob, Keeper, Laz, maybe Sam.
All the Isaacs don't really get along as much as they should
The Tainted characters are older versions of the originals. In the instance of this blog there has been a thirteen-year time skip between when they first left the Basement and when they returned
The Basement is a limbo created by God to give “trials” to abused kids and Fallen beings he feels like tormenting again
Scars accumulate from runs and can be healed quicker by getting HP ups or using the Yum Heart
Personal items (Torn Photo, Polaroid/Negative, Mr. Dolly, possibly some others) differ in appearance based on who’s “player 1”
The Mom-based bosses (minus Mother) and Angel Isaac+??? also change according to “P1”
Mother is Jacob and Esau’s mother. This is why defeating her unlocks them, and why the alt-path is so different and new and coincided with their arrival to the Basement
Age Ideas (Parentheses are Tainted)
Isaac+dead counterparts: 5 (18)
Maggy: 7 (20)
Cain: 10 (23)
Judas: 10 (23)
Eve: 14 (27)
Samson: 11 (24)
Laz: 10 (23)
Beth: 9 (22)
J+E: 9 (22)
Apollyon, Azazel, and Lilith are thousands of years old and are listed in order of time of creation. Eden's age is the estimated age of the universe.
Applicable Headcanons for Each Character
Isaac
Now lives with his dad
That. Explains the bruises.
Named all the unique monsters in the Basement, as well as identified some Items
One thing he and his dead counterparts have in common is a love for drawing
The chaos of having seventeen people crammed into one floor stresses him out more than the others
Appreciates his friendship with all of them, though
Gender is Isaac. Doesn’t really care what pronouns people use so everyone uses he/him for short
Magdalene
She used to be a pageant child and still suffers body issues from it.
The Caffeine Pill item REEAAALLLY upsets her cause of that
V… valley girl accent……….
Assigned healer
BEST HUGS!!!!
Maybe too good. If she's hugging you don't let her get distracted cause she'll forget her own strength
Cain
Has a prosthetic left foot from an accident (havent thought of exactly what yet)
His left eye was gouged out by his dad tho
He's the most generally well-off of everyone. Guess he was just born lucky…
Absolutely was a Little Shit™ as a child and still is
Avid min-maxer in video games
Kleptomaniac
Ok the way I'm describing sounds like he's got a bit of OCD
Often fulfills role as leader when need be
I don't have any ideas for Abel yet but I'll think of something. Maybe he was absorbed in the womb?
You know what??? I like that. Cain's a chimaera. He has (uh. Had???) heterochromia. That's why his eye items are different colors.
Is bald on purpose
Judas
Br*tish. Mancunian, even.
Hanged himself in the closet
His pact was with Belial (obv)
Chose to learn the dark arts when he was nine
Eventually got the stick out of his ass and developed a sense of humor
Still Anti-Christian to the point where it's a bit worrying but the others are starting to understand him
Yes he had a friend named Jesús. It was an unintentional betrayal, though.
???
He can't really talk. All that comes out when he vocalizes are grunts and groans.
Responds to a lot of questions by just. smiling and shrugging 🤷♂️
Just. Chilling.
Chaotic and does what he Wants for comedic purposes
Eve
Has a Dead Bird tattoo on her chest.
Needs to take blood-thinning pills.
Forgotten calls her "V" as a reference to his own nickname.
Has a younger brother named Adam
Ma'am please stop smoking it's SO bad for you
Half Japanese cause I said so
She's still marked by the Whore of Babylon on her left thigh, which she got through the Satanic Church
It's undecided which demon she made her pact with. I was thinking about making it a twist where it's Lilith…
The local crows love her
Samson
Back story here
His middle name is Loowit after Mount St. Helens
The only person he fully trusts and can make him smile is Maggy 🥺
Beat his dad to death lmao
He was happier as a kid when his mom was still around…
Now he just has anger issues and gets easily annoyed
Delilah.
Azazel
The OG. It's unknown what his Choir was before his Fall, besides being in the class of Watchers
Has a face mask for every occasion. Ofc there are meme ones
His sense of humor is. SO BAD.
This is where his wings and horn went
Making fun of people is his way of showing affection
Still misses Semjaza even though he was kinda back stabbed
Lazarus
He is a TOTAL hippy. Vegetarian and all.
Flipped Laz doesn't give a fuck about any personal beliefs though and will do anything to survive. Sometimes regular Laz will flip back with a stomach ache cause he unknowingly ate meat.
Laz subconsciously flips when he feels like he's about to die (kinda like the emergency button trinket). Obv it's automatic when he "clears" rooms.
Normal Laz is very sweet and shy
Dead/Flipped Laz is angry, driven to that point by dying so many times. His rage could almost match Samson's
Flipped Laz is incredibly paranoid and is always in fight-or-flight mode
Eden
A fallen deity
Knows more about the world than the others
They are the personification of the chaotic nature of the universe. They are both tranquility and chaos. They are blessed and damned. They are all and nothing.
Judas introduced them to memes. Oh God why did you do that. They're almost as bad as Azazel. They won't stop saying amogus. Help.
Fourth wall breaker
God wanted to make them one of His angels so they'd always be under His control. But Eden is too stubborn.
Eloquent speaker
Shapeshifter cause their true form would melt everyone. Mainly changes their voice to quote ytps.
Lately they’ve been losing some control of their powers, which is why they appear glitchy
Lost
Edgy
Needy
Keep killing him it's funny
Check out his spiders
Backstory thing here
While he knows he can easily die he still fucks with the others cause he thinks its funny
Lilith
The OG
No hard feelings for Adam, but definitely some for God
And Samael. Dear LORD don’t bring him up
Married to Asmodeus
Gello's full name is Gelatínus Azariah Shamdon (yeah lol, Raphael's cover name, and Asmodeus' father)
Assigned mom friend and treats everyone like they’re her children
With help from Azazel, she got Judas and Beth together
In general plays matchmaker with Zaze. They've got a great record it's just 99% of their successful matches are random nobody enemies no one cares about
Incubus doesn’t seem to talk to her anymore...
Keeper
Often forgets the other kids' names cause he never cared to learn them unless they paid up (he always called Bethany Brittany for example)
This is why he gave them all titles and refers to them by that (The Zealot, The Broken, etc)
INSANELY good at math. Gotta be good at counting them coins
Best way I can describe his existence is that he's a corpse inhabited by a fragment of Greed? When he was "unlocked" he was no longer controlled by Ultra Greed/part of the hive mind
Another eloquent speaker, he's more flamboyant about it though
Apollyon
Another OG
If he gets too excited about the Pit eventually taking all, new cracks appear or previous cracks on his body worsen.
His pre-Fall name was Abaddon. It’s unknown what his Choir was.
Abbadon was cocky and prideful but was very quickly humbled by God. Don’t ever shit-talk Gabriel again
His sentences always trail off…
Used to be friends with the Horsemen
Main form of affection is existing in the same room as someone, like a cat. He considers this bonding.
Forgotten
Everyone calls him "F" for short.
He's been hanging around Eve too much cause now he's emo and apathetic like her.
Is the skeleton a different soul??? Who knows!
Uncomfortable in tight spaces. He's not over the being buried thing
Bethany (Her!!!!)
I dunno if that's supposed to be an eye or jewel on her head??? Honestly I kinda prefer jewel
Either way it bleeds when she cries
And it only ever glows if she has an active wisp
Each wisp she summons is gifted by a Goetic demon (I'll explain more once I actually make a ref sheet)
Has a Seal of Solomon ring (again will be on an eventual ref sheet)
Her mom's name is Judy (after Judea in the Bible)
Kinda backstory again
Second soprano in choir
Knew Edith
Only acts tough. She's still sweet on the inside. Her mouth just runs faster than her brain sometimes and regrets things she said
Jacob
J+E backstory here
His mother's name is Rebekah (Like in the Bible)
Momma's boy
Has always been easily jealous and afraid to admit it
Has had a weak stomach ever since he, well, watched his brother get flayed
Blood makes him queasy, cause, well--
We all know he simps for Beth. Dude please just let it go
Currently wearing his mother’s dress
Esau
Much like in the Bible he's the older, fraternal twin
And his dad liked him more…
His vision doesn't suck ass like Jacob's cause of his pact
Which he made with Satan btw
The reason why he's grabbed by Big Horn when he "dies" is because Esau babysits Lil Horn for him. It's the least he can do.
Speaking of Lil Horn that's his little onglydoople. His cutest tootsit. Bapy
I wanted to be dramatic and only have him in serious situations but it's honestly more fun to make him act like an angry cat
Friends with the demon bosses. Yes he gets a lot of "Remember when we tried to kill u??? Lol." jokes from them
I tried to make sure everyone had at least a few. Some definitely have fewer than others lol. I tried my best.
Feel free to, like, reblog this or message me about this. I came up with these on my own so peer review would be nice 👉👈

hey laz! have you met anyone else in the basement yet?
Lazarus nods. "There's a lot of other people down here."
"My older sister is down here too. Her name's Bethany but I usually call her Beth."
"Beth doesn't like going on runs with me since she doesn't want me to see her corpse if she ends up dying. I don't want her to know how many pills I eat in one run, so I guess it works out."
“I think Isaac was one of the first to end up here. He's also the youngest. He doesn't talk much, but he does like to draw! …Sometimes the things he draws are really violent, but if he's in a good mood he'll draw pictures of cats or familiars."
"Maggie is kind although a little blunt sometimes. She's one of the more social people down here."
"I don't know how to feel about Eden. They say a lot of things that don't make sense. One time I woke up to them standing over me and them saying that my 'stats' are terrible."
“Apollyon scares me a little. He’s not mean or anything- he’s actually really nice, but sometimes he just stand still and stares at his void for hours or talks about the apocalypse. Him and Beth like to talk about books sometimes.”
“I don't know much about Judas. He's usually busy studying his book or writing stuff down. Cain likes to hang around him sometimes and Judas will tell him to go away but he never actually makes him leave.”
"Cain is really good at finding pills and winning stuff from the arcades. He's a bit superstitious though and he'll get nervous if a run goes too well or if he doesn't go through rooms in a certain order."
"Samson is strange. He's really friendly towards everyone, until he gets mad. Sometimes it'll just be little things like accidentally stepping on a spike or missing the boss rush. I saw him beat a gaper to death with his fists and keep hitting it until he was covered in blood... I stopped going on runs with him after that."
"I don't know much about Eve either. She usually keeps to herself. Sometimes she'll spend time with Lilith or sing to her bird."
"Blue is... a dead body. They move around and talk like they're alive, but they look and smell like they're rotting. Sometimes he coughs up flies or maggots. I feel bad for avoiding him but he creeps me out."
“The Lost hides and cries a lot. They get mad whenever someone tries to comfort them though. He yelled at me when I offered a hug."
"The Forgotten is really curious about everything. They like to investigate things by smacking them with their club. They've hit me a couple of times but I don't think they meant anything bad by it... I hope."
"Keeper bit me for quarter during a run once. I'm afraid of what he would do for a dollar.”
“Jacob and Esau are always together, but sometimes it seems like Esau wants to explore on his own. Jacob is really cheerful and talkative but sometimes he'll say mean things or push me out of the way for a good item. Esau can be a bit grumpy sometimes but he always apologizes if he ends up saying something mean."
"Azazel is hyper and loud. He's always flying around or hiding in dark corners to try and scare someone. Beth doesn't like him very much since he almost burnt her book one time."
“When I first arrived, Lilith scared me the most since, well, she's a big tall demon, but she's super nice! She worries a lot about me and the others who are human. She says we're too squishy to be crawling around the basement. I think she wanted to cry when she realized we don't have claws or sharp teeth.”
"I think that's everyone but I wouldn't be surprised if there are more people down here."
#laz replies#(im so sorry this took so long i'll get to other asks soon i prommy)#(also esau is a lil irritable since he has no skin. he is in constant pain you can't blame him for being kinda on edge)

As Luck Would Have It by @justalittlelouislove
2.498 words / One Shot / Harry Styles x Louis Tomlinson
We've all experienced the trials and tribulations of technology. Louis is sabotaged by a bit of unhelpful autocorrect, but maybe luck is on his side after all.
The author captures the embarrassment of having sent that unlucky text and the awkwardness of having to face the consequences amazingly. Just on the cusp between sweet and funny, it is a perfectly balanced nugget of sunshine on a cloudy day.
Lit a Fire Inside by QuickedWeen, @becomeawendybird
3.110 words / One Shot / Harry Styles x Louis Tomlinson
Bored at home, Harry turns to TikTok and quickly gets addicted to all of the amazing lesbian content. She especially likes the videos of a beautiful pole dancer named @loubabyxo.
This fic feels too real and too fantastical at the same time. Give it a read and it will make you want to download tiktok and search up @loubabyxo yourself! (Only to be disappointed to find it doesn’t exist and the first account that comes up is very straight tiktok™.)
Three little words by sunnysideup, @somewhereisaplacethatziamknow
3.843 words / One Shot / Zayn Malik x Liam Payne
Somehow they find each other no matter how often it ends.
Three little words Liam didn’t utter can’t be the key to it all can it?
Packed into 3843 words is so much emotion, longing and hoping and a cat named Brian. It’s a quick but very lovely read.
One Night In London, With Options by rsadelle, @rsadelle
9.237 words / Choose Your Own Adventure Fic Fest 2019 / Harry Styles x Louis Tominson, or Harry Styles x Zayn Malik
Security hustles everyone who isn't running away down into the club's basement level. Harry keeps hold of the hand of the guy he'd been snogging on the dance floor; he doesn't want to get separated from him now that they've just met.
The format of picking with whom and how you want the story to proceed is great fun. And keeping the endings different yet the same was part of that fun. No spoilers but… we always knew that about Harry, didn’t we?
The Garden Part 1 by Throwthemflowers, @hazzabeeforlou
12.921 words / Series / Harry Styles x Louis Tomlinson
Through many centuries and reincarnations, the same fate always binds Louis and Harry’s souls together… an AU mirroring the parallel stories of David, Jesus, and Adam in the Bible, the three “Christ-like” figures in Biblical history. Harry plays these divine faces, and opposing him is Louis, the complication, the thwarter, the 5th century Jonathan who falls madly in love with his kingly father’s musician, the 1960s Judas whose loyalty to his carpenter best-friend-turned-energy-healer is sealed in a kiss, and in the present day, an Eve, who finds himself shipwrecked on a perfect island with a man known to the world as the twitter handle @sonofgod, a sad and bitter man who has lost all hope. As they grow to love each other, echoes of their past lives haunt them, and Louis is faced with the ultimate temptation. A three part story spanning hundreds of years, dripping with sacrilege and doused with angst, dealing with questions of duty and fate and destiny and divinity and holiness, a re-telling of one of the oldest myths known to mankind centered around the bonds of love, a love so powerful that even death cannot touch it.
With prose so beautiful you will re-read phrases just to savor them, the author builds a world and a relationship so deep and lovely with characters both beautiful and horrific. It’s possible to immerse yourself into the story and feel that you are in the room with them. Warning: You will cry but in a very cool way. And the best part? There is a Part 2 and soon to be a Part 3!

Analysis: White guilt, apologies and why Hollywood is a cauldron of race issues at the moment
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/analysis-white-guilt-apologies-and-why-hollywood-is-a-cauldron-of-race-issues-at-the-moment/
Analysis: White guilt, apologies and why Hollywood is a cauldron of race issues at the moment
Despite complaints about “cancel culture” and racist insistence that people who talk about these important issues are “playing the race card,” Hollywood can’t seem to get away from conversations about race and diversity.
And while hopefully those discussions can lead to progress, lately they have led to controversy for some.
Osbourne said she didn’t necessarily agree with Morgan’s comments, but defended his right to make them. She herself was accused of being less than respectful when she berated Underwood for appearing to get emotional and insisted that if anyone should be crying over the conversation, it should be Osbourne herself.
Her perceived “victimhood” not only didn’t go over well, but the incident led to both an apology from Osbourne and an investigation by CBS into happenings on the set of “The Talk.”
Chris Harrison: “The Bachelor” franchise and its issues with race have long been discussed.
From its lack of diversity to last year’s outrage over “Bachelorette” star Hannah Brown using a racial epithet while jamming to a song, it’s safe to say the reality show has generated some headlines on matters of race.
But things came to a head this season after the casting of the first Black “Bachelor,” Matt James.
Longtime franchise host Chris Harrison has had to step aside from his duties after controversial comments he made during an interview with Rachel Lindsay, the first Black “Bachelorette,” who has been working for the TV show “Extra.”
During the chat, Harrison appeared to defend contestant Rachael Kirkconnell for being photographed at an antebellum plantation-themed fraternity formal event in 2018.
Harrison apologized, and James ended up giving Kirkconnell the final rose but then broke up with her over the controversy.
Billie Eilish: This instance was not so much an apology aired but rather yet another time a White artist has felt compelled to acknowledge a Black artist when an institution — in this case, the Grammys — did not.
Last Sunday, Eilish took home the final award of the evening, the prestigious record of the year, and used her acceptance speech to explain why rapper Megan Thee Stallion, one of her fellow nominees, really deserved it.
“You are so beautiful, you are so talented,” Eilish said. “I root for you always. You deserve it, honestly.”
If the moment felt familiar, it was because we had seen it happen before.
Adele tearfully gushed about Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” album deserving to win album of the year in 2017, instead of her album “25.”
Three years before, White rapper Macklemore apologized to rapper Kendrick Lamar for winning rap album of the year instead of the Black artist.
Race and identity politics can be complicated, but what’s not hard to understand is that these incidents happen because disparities and a far-from-level playing field absolutely exist in this world and in Hollywood.
Until that changes, someone is going to end up feeling sorry for it, or at the very least need to acknowledge it publicly.
For your weekend
Three things to watch:
‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’
Calling all superhero geeks.
The time is now to finally see how the Justice League film fared in the hands of Zack Snyder, thanks to the release of this extended director’s cut. Joss Whedon had stepped in to complete the 2017 film after Snyder left the project due to personal tragedy.
“The result of this fresh take, strictly from a creative and filmmaking standpoint, is fascinating: How did two different directors — Whedon, who birthed the ‘Avengers’ franchise on screen; and Snyder, who tackled adapting the famously unadaptable ‘Watchmen’ — approach the same material?” is how my Appradab colleague Brian Lowry described the project.
The movie premieres Thursday on HBO Max (which is owned by Appradab’s parent company).
‘Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal’
Ripped from the headlines, as they say, this film uses re-enactments to tell the story of the college admissions scandal that landed several wealthy parents — including celebs Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman — in legal trouble.
The story dominated the news for months, and now you can relive it all by heading over to Netflix, where it’s currently streaming.
‘Minari’
Now that the Oscar nominations are out, you may want to check out some of the nominees.
“Minari” is up for six categories, including best picture. The drama draws on director Lee Issac Chung’s childhood to tell the tale of a Korean American family trying to survive in rural Arkansas in the 1980s.
The film is currently available to stream on several services including Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
Two things to listen to:
Justin Bieber recently told Billboard there is a message behind his new music.
“I just want to be somebody who can say, ‘Look, I did some things that I’m not too proud of, but I took a look in the mirror and decided to make some changes, and you can too,” he told the publication. “There was a time where I really did have my identity wrapped up in my career, but I really do have an overflow of feeling like my purpose is to use my music to inspire.”
His sixth studio album, “Justice,” drops Friday and is Bieber’s second album release in 13 months. (“Changes” came out on Valentine’s Day 2020.)
With marriage to model Hailey Bieber and more private time — thanks to quarantining and no cellphone to limit who can get a hold of him — the now 27-year-old former teen idol appears to be at a new stage in his life and career.
Last year, Lana Del Rey announced she would be delaying her new album, “Chemtrails Over the Country Club,” for a few months.
Now, we get to see if it was worth the wait.
The studio album from the singer is the much-anticipated follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2019 collection, “Norman F**king Rockwell,” and expectations are high that she will continue to deliver her special brand of artistry when it drops Friday.
One thing to talk about:
It’s not breaking news that award shows and their voters appear to be out of step with the general public.
But this year’s best supporting actor category for the Oscars is even more confounding.
That’s because the two stars of “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Lakeith Stanfield and Daniel Kaluuya, are both nominated in the category.
Which begs the question: “Which one is the actual star of the film if neither scored a best actor nod?”
I reached out to the Academy about this and a rep declined to comment. So we’ll just have to be content with the fact that the two won’t have to compete with the late Chadwick Boseman, a best actor nominee who is favored by many for what is believed to be his final on-screen performance in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.”
Something to sip on
Looking for something to watch? We asked some of our friends around Appradab what they binge-watch to decompress.
Fredricka Whitfield, Appradab Newsroom anchor
Not at all uplifting, nor did they help me decompress, yet I indulged in “Killing Eve,” “The Undoing” and some “Lovecraft Country.”
Michael Smerconish, Smerconish anchor
“Call My Agent!” Who’d have thought I’d get hooked on a French TV show with subtitles — but I love it.
Kate Bolduan, At This Hour anchor
How can I limit it to just one?! Now, a year into Covid, here are some of the favorites that have gotten me through — “The Queen’s Gambit,” “Succession,” “Billions,” “The Spy,” “Kids Baking Championship (seasons 1-9),” “The Men Who Built America” and “The Mandalorian.”

Is there anything you could tell me about Volos history/culture/customs/mythology/etc wise? I have some family from there but don't know much. Thank you!
I have been there once and I felt it as a very open town and friendly. There is no particular bad rumor for its residents. It's a beautiful town, right next to the sea. You can take walks at a chunk of land into the sea. A university building and other important buildings overlook the sea. People there go out for coffee in the afternoon and evening, as in all Greek towns.
Volos is known for it's small taverns with very tasty food, and tsipouradika, where you go to drink tsipouro with light food (mezes). Even university students ignore the clubs to go there many times. As every town in Greece, it has its archeological museum with ancient stuff from all eras. Unlike many towns in Greece, people use their bikes there.
You may want to search the history of the castle of Volos.
Mythically the Magnites were the first people there and it's rumored they were children of the Greek god of winds, Aiolos. (Today the area where Volos is, is called Magnisia).
The Mycenaic civilization was there with Iolkos (the town from were the hero Iasonas - Jason - was from) was an important center. According to myths near the area lived the Centauroi and the scientist Chiron, the teacher of taught Achilles, was one of them.
For modern traditions assume the area has the standard Greek traditions.
Recent traditions unique to the area:
On Xmas eve, on new years Eve and on the day before the baptism of christ the children go from door to door singing, announcing the day that is to come. The people from the houses give them money.
On Xmas eve the oldest woman in the house burns the biggest log in the house. The log symbolizes the elves/trolls Kalikantzaree who gnaw on the tree of life and Christ is born and baptized to send them back to their houses.
Before the Big Week of Easter, on the Saint Theodoroi day, unmarried girls used to seek wheat seeds from recently women called Maria and from married men called Theodoros. Then those seeds are blessed by the church and the girls put them under their pillow or behind their door in order to dream their future husband.
Another way to reveal your future husband was to bake a salty or sweet cake and devote it to Saint Fanourios. (The same tactic is used to make the saint help you find stuff you lost in all of Greece).
In the Big Week of Easter people made a dummy of Judas and then destroyed it with fire, stones and other means.
Another thing girls used to do is gather water and transfer it without speaking, and then throw things into the can water singing songs. (They are all together in the house). Then, the first name they will hear on their way home will be the name of their husband.
Vlax people are today a "tribe" of Greek people with Slavic roots.Vlax people were kinda separate from Greeks at one point but now their communities have mixed with other Greek tribes. Many Greeks have Vlax ancestry but traditionally Vlax people were seen as something other. People around the villages of Volos reenact a Vlax wedding, which takes days, the second half of August. People dress traditionally and play in or watch this reenactment.
There are different festivals for apples, melons and wine every summer. People eat, drink and dance to traditional and more modern folk music. Of course there are fanfairs/festivals (paneegēēree) too, to honor saints where you will find sellers, food, drinks and dance.
If you want more information don't hesitate to send me another Ask or a DM!

Sebastian Bach remembers Dimebag Darrell
My relationship to this sick series of events goes way back, some 18 years. I joined a band from Detroit called MADAM X back in 1986 and the very first place I ever played on the road, outside of Detroit, was the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio. This is my first memory of touring in America. I vividly remember staying at the Red Roof Inn down the street and then rocking the Alrosa . I was 17 at the time and was living my dream of touring the United States, and the Al Rosa Villa was the very first stage I ever set foot on being on the road in the USA. The very first time I ever heard of Dimebag Darrell was way back in late 1986 or early 1987. As the MADAM X tour progressed across America, we played in Ft. Worth Texas at a place called Savvy's, a club legendary for separating the of-age & not-of-age by a chain-link fence, just like in the BLUES BROTHERS. Yes, bottles were whipped and smashed into the fence nightly at this place. We were just about to go on stage when Godzilla, the bass player for MADAM X, ran back into the dressing room, seven foot tall with hair that literally touched the ceiling, as he screamed into the room, 'Dude guess what!!! Fucking PANTERA is here tonight watching the show!! They are all sitting at a table right in front of the stage, I can't fucking believe this!!!' The reason for his excitement was simple. Already, even with their previous lead singer, PANTERA was legendary on the club circuit in the southern states. Even then, almost 20 years ago, Dimebag's innovative guitar playing and showmanship was already the standard to which other guitar players were to be measured. They already had a sizable fan base and reputation as one of the best metal bands you could ever see on a stage. We were extremely excited and honored to jam for this bunch of highly respected musicians. Little did I know at the time what was in store in the future for myself, and the band PANTERA, and how our lives would intertwine in the years to come. The next time I encountered Dime was in my old guitar player Scotti Hill's house. We were writing the song 'Mudkicker' for our forthcoming record. At the time, we were in one of the biggest bands in the world. We had already begun to headline arenas on our own on our first record and we were planning our first USA headline arena tour at the time. The material we were writing for 'Slave to the Grind' was a lot heavier than our first album and we wanted to take out the heaviest, coolest band on the road that we could find. I remember Scotti pulling out 'Cowboys From Hell' at his house on a songwriting break. He said, 'Dude, check out this band, I really dig them,' and that's when I checked out the album sleeve, as he put it on the stereo. Loud. I immediately remembered the band from the MADAM X days, but I had never listened to them before. I couldn't believe my ears. As the opening guitar riff to 'Cowboys From Hell' came out of the speakers, I knew we had found the band we were looking for to come on tour with us. This was like a new kind of JUDAS PRIEST meets ZZ TOP meets VAN HALEN divided by SLAYER equals its own kind of thing. I remember cranking the album and smiling to myself, 'I cannot wait to help introduce this fucking band to North America!' I knew they were gonna blow up huge as soon as the public at large got a chance to feel their power. So we made the decision. SKID ROW was going to bring PANTERA on their first North American arena tour. I remember the first show like it was yesterday. It was New Years Eve '91/'92 in New Orleans, at this arena that was completely circular and I remember watching PANTERA kick ass for the first time that night. As a metalhead first and foremost myself, it was an absolute dream to stand on the side of the stage every night witnessing PANTERA's rise to fame, night after night, city after city. To have those crazy fuckers as my friends was something I will never forget. Everyone knows about the 'lust for life' that was a legendary part of Dimebag's life. Well, let me say that anyone who was there can attest to the fact that we set the fucking standard for 'living it up' on the SKID ROW / PANTERA tour. Tony Wiggins, the bus driver turned backstage legend of MARILYN MANSON fame and PANTERA lore, got his start in this business how? By being Sebastian Bach's personal driver. Tony was my bus driver on the 'Slave' tour and spent every night driving me across the USA, many times with Phil Anselmo, or my road crew, or other crazy freaks 'unwinding' with me on the way to the next city. To read about Tony's exploits in the MARILYN MANSON book makes me feel like a proud papa. Big Val Bichekas; PANTERA, ALICE IN CHAINS, and now Ozzy's personal security guard? The first job Big Val ever had in rock 'n' roll was — you guessed it — Sebastian Bach's personal security guard. Val met PANTERA on the 'Slave' tour and when Ozzy was looking for personal security, Sharon asked Big Val, 'Who have you done security for?' He answered, 'Sebastian Bach was my first. PANTERA was second.' Ozzy hired him right away, and has employed him ever since. I don't know why his resume says so much to others about his experience! Well, if you ever partied with Dimebag you would know why. The SKID ROW / PANTERA tour. So much to say, a lot that can't be remembered. But due to video tape a lot of these insane moments still exist on tape. Dimebag was pretty much always, or 90 percent of the time that I was with him, with a video camera in hand. Three nights ago I watched 'Vulgar Video' for the first time in over 10 years, and I was astonished to find the full version of both bands doing 'Cold Gin' on there, PANTERA in complete KISS garb. Wow. Also the PANTERA / SKID ROW baseball game — a direct example of Dimebag's hilarious prankster personality at work. What actually happened that day was SKID ROW completely destroyed PANTERA on the baseball field, by at least 20 runs, which wasn't hard because they were all sporting the Black Tooth Grin by early afternoon! Hey it was a day off! But when I played 'Vulgar Video' for the first time I remember holding my head in my hands, laughing, due to some major Dimebag digital editing magic!! The baseball segment on the video shows PANTERA kicking the shit out of SKID ROW, 33 - 8, saved for posterity on the shelf of your local Sam Goody's, for all time, all over the world. Unbelievable. Devious. Funny as shit. Some of the best times of our lives. Denver Colorado. Dimebag is running around the arena with his video camera, as usual. On the road now for a couple of months, my throat feels kind of tight and we have a 'rock doctor' in house to check out my pipes. Dimebag runs up to me in the hallway and screams 'DUUUUUUUUUUUDE, what the fuck, are you seeing the Dr. or what? What the fuck?' with his vidcam omnipresent. I tell him 'Yes, I am on my way up the hall to see the doc.' Dimebag: 'CAN I FILM IT?' Me laughing, 'Sure, dude, knock yerself out!' What a nut! So we get to the Dr., who sits me down on the table and gets his stethoscope and selection of mirrors out to stick down my throat. But as he goes to shove this long mirror thing down my neck, there is one thing in the way — Dimebag Darrell. 'DUDE, HOLY SHIT, MAN, YOU GOTS-TA SEE THIS!! I have your complete vocal cords, close-up, on video.' I am sitting there with my head tilted all the way back, mouth open as wide as it can go with a Dr. shoving a mirror into me on one side, with Dimebag Darrell shoving his camera down my throat on the other side. The Dr. says, 'OK, Sebastian say aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh,' and as I do so, Dime screams out, 'Dude, that shit is TIGHT!! I got your chords on close-up it looks fuckin' wild!' He was focusing his camera right on the mirror that the Dr. was using to look at my vocal chords. Every gag, choke, and cough that I did that day was captured by Dime on film. That was Dimebag. Taking a mundane event and turning it into something fun, worth rockumenting, making a cool little memory of something you would otherwise never remember. I have 'seize the day' tattooed on my arm in Latin. Dimebag Darrell seized every day like there was no tomorrow. No matter how hung over he was! Also on 'Vulgar Video' is the shot of PANTERA having a fucking bar-b-q, right in front of the stage while we were doing our show! My memory of that night, in Hannibal, Missouri (I think) was watching Dimebag on his side of the stage open the show. Right when they got to the ending of 'Domination', one of my favorite songs, as they go into that crushing half-time riff at the end, I remember banging my head as hard as I could but not looking around the backstage, and by mistake slamming my head straight into the side fill, as Dimebag ripped out that riff. I saw stars and felt a knot rise up on my skull the size of a bowling ball. I though I might have a concussion or something, but fuck it, we never canceled a show that whole tour and weren't gonna. So I chilled till we went on stage, kinda dizzy. Then as I was on-stage I look into the first row. Before that there was a good 15 feet of sand, we were playing an outdoor show on some sort of beach. In front of the barricade in the 'pit' was Dimebag Darrell, the rest of PANTERA, and my wife Maria all sitting around ........ a bar-b-q!!! Dimebag and Phil were actually cooking hot-dogs and pouring Tequila shots and handing them out to the audience, crew, and band on stage as well! I thought i might be hallucinating because of smashing my head during PANTERA's set, but no. There I am singing '18 & Life' as Dimebag squirts ketchup and mustard all over his beef frank, and as I get into the song I look out at Dime looking straight into my eyes offering me a hot dog mouthing the words, 'Duuuuuuuude! You want a bite of this delicious wiener bro, c'mon!!!' as everyone is laughing their guts out and my wife is next to Dimebag doing shots of tequila and having potato salad. Then in 'Youth Gone Wild', in the drum breakdown, seeing the whole crowd singing the words, holding up, in unison, ...... hot dogs! Thanks Dime, I do remember they tasted good!!!! My wife got along great with Dime. I can't remember where, some bar in the USA, but Rita, Dime's girl, was there, wearing John Lennon style rose-tinted round mirrored glasses, only with a pot leaf design on each eye. She gave me the shades as a present at the end of the night, which was very cool. During this night, Maria, my wife, had a drinking contest with Dimebag. There is some dispute as to what happened next. I remember Maria and Dime doing 33 shots of Tequila — between them both. Maria, however, seriously remembers — and do not try this at home — her and Dimebag both — doing 33 shots of tequila, each! I think this is physically impossible, but this was over the course of a full evening, and our tolerance was way up back then, so while I hope I am right and Maria is wrong about this, I must admit that if anyone could do this it would have to be Dimebag Darrell!!!! 'Getcha Pull' indeed!!!!! All this mayhem was not without consequence. When we all checked into the hotel in Philadelphia (I think), I had my own bus with Tony Wiggins and Big Val. Someone called my big clunky cellphone (a rarity in those days) and informed our bus that we would not be checking into the hotel that we were on our way to. Both bands had been kicked out of the hotel before I got there. The story I got was that Snake and Dimebag each did a tab of fucking acid, and as the tour managers were checking into the hotel, Dimebag took a knife to one of the leather couches in the hotel lobby, ripping it to shreds and getting both bands permanently banned from the premises! A lot of crazy shit went down in those days and a story like this was just par for the course on this tour. A month or so into the tour, PANTERA released 'A Vulgar Display Of Power'. Prior to this, the band was touring with us without a new album to support. But when 'Vulgar' came out after touring the USA with us for a month or so, the album came straight into the Billboard charts in the top 40 and remains to this day one of the greatest albums of all time. The day after it came into the charts, we were playing Vancouver BC at the PNE and Phil walked straight into our dressing room, 'Hey Bierk. I want a leather couch, full lights, full stage, sound check, blah blah blah.' He was joking around with a list of demands due to the 'new level' that he was now on. It was hilarious and we were all laughing but the point was made. PANTERA was now a big fucking band and from here on out, it was nothing but onward and upward for PANTERA. Dimebag had a 4-track recorder on the road with him at the time. I can remember many nights in his hotel room, getting drunk & recording songs. One particular highlight was Dimebag's version of 'Slave To The Grind' that he recorded on his own, re-titled 'Krell & Dykes'. 'KRELL & DYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYKES' went the chorus. Most of you know what dykes are, maybe some of you know what krell is, but Dime made a version of 'Slave To The Grind' with lyrics describing these two areas of interest on this particular tour that was truly a moment in music I wish you all could hear! He gave me a tape of it over 10 years ago, I hope I still have it. If you don't know what krell is, I am not going to tell you! But for those of you with a nose for this kind of thing, I hope one day I can find my copy of Dimebag Darrell's 'Krell & Dykes' and when I do I will post it on the net if it is not too incriminating!! We also had one night where I sang a ballad of Dime's into the 4-track as the sun was coming up. We were so drunk I couldn't stop laughing and Dime too, I just remember him saying 'C'mon, Bierk!!! I KNOW you can do it!!!' But both of us were so drunk I remember more laughing than singing going on that night. Still I know we did at least three tracks of vocals, harmonies and doubling etc., even at 7-8 am with 12 hours of drinking in us, Dime was ready to do what he did best — create rock'n'roll music like you never heard before. After the SKID ROW / PANTERA tour, my next major involvement with Dimebag was a band that we formed together. Named 'SEBASTIAN BACH'S ROCK BUDS', we started the band after I was asked by High Times magazine to play at a benefit in Manhattan at the Limelight. All proceeds would go to the National Organization for the Reformation of Marijuana Laws (NORML). I thought this was a cool idea and they said I could play with whoever I wanted. So, first on my list was Dimebag Darrell. I called him up and he said 'Sure dude. Name the time & place and I will be there! Let's get Rex on bass!' So Rex Brown joined up, along with Bam Bam McConnell on drums and Snake on guitar. Andy McCoy from HANOI ROCKS also came up for a tune, although Dimebag refused to jam with him! The majority of the set was SKID / PANTERA; we did 'Slave', 'New Level', 'Walk', 'Monkey Business', and 'Cowboys From Hell', I think. I have this show on video in perfect condition and it is obviously something I treasure now. Dimebag came up 2 or 3 days before the show and stayed at my house. Rex stayed at Snake's. We rehearsed for the gig at SIR in Manhattan. I remember rehearsing for the gig in 'rehearsal mode', which was doing the songs but not putting alot of sweat into it. Dimebag said to everyone, 'What the fuck is this? Where is the sweat? The fire?' I said to him something lame like, 'Oh, it's just rehearsal dude. You wanna rehearse like we are actually on stage, that's cool.' Dime shot back at me 'IS THERE ANY OTHER FUCKING WAY???' I will never forget him saying that. I totally understood what he was saying and ever since then there is no 'rehearsal mode / stage mode' bullshit. Dime did it full out all the time: 'IS THERE ANY OTHER FUCKING WAY???' Not for Dimebag Darrell. Dimebag was also one of the most of the professional persons in the business. Yes he could out drink you under the table and into the gutter, but he also firmly believed that there was a time and a place for everything. We were all doing all sorts of shit back then, but I can remember Dimebag pulling me aside somewhere saying, dude, you 'wake & bake' don't ya? C'mon, I know ya do. I used to do that shit myself. Have a bong right next to the bed, and hit that shit as soon as I fucking woke up. But I learned you cannot do that shit dude! For real! You get a fax or a phone call or something and you are too high to deal with that shit!! That shit is not good dude!!' The fact that he would pull a friend of his aside to try and help them if he thought they needed it was a testament to the fact that Dimebag cared about others. You hear a lot about how much the man loved to party, but I also remember him being strict about putting things in their proper place. Having his shit together at all times was ultimately way more important to Dimebag than just being shitfaced 24/7. The man could not create the music he did or put on the shows he did without being at the top of his game at all times, which Dimebag always was. 1998. I am on my very first tour of the USA as a solo artist. We are playing Pittsburgh PA at a place called Graffiti's. I get the message, PANTERA is coming to the show tonight! This is totally cool, I am on the road trying to re-establish myself & here come some of my old buds to cheer me on. Shit doesn't get any better than this. But wait... it does! Vinnie Paul shows up at the gig and gets pretty drunk, big surprise! Then he comes on stage at the end of the set and grabs the mike and screams 'Hey Pittsburgh!!! This motherfucker took us on our first ever arena tour of the USA!!!' Big cheer. Then he says something totally unexpected. 'And we are gonna take this motherfucker on his first fucking arena tour!!!!!!!!!!!' The place goes nuts. I look at my bandmates and we all look at each other in disbelief. I start to laugh, because I don't know whether it is Vinnie talking, or the vats of Crown Royal he has consumed over the evening. For me to go on tour in arenas in my solo band in the USA was a big fucking deal. We had no record out or even a label at that time. The only reason for PANTERA to take us on the road was simple — rock & roll, and a friendship that went far beyond normal music business corporate sensibilities. When I got back home, I could not believe my eyes. Right there in the fax machine, as I walked in the front door, was a fax from PANTERA's booking agent with three weeks of arena shows in the USA that they wanted my solo band to open! Vinnie told me that he told Dimebag about seeing us in Pittsburgh, and Dime said 'Let's bring that fucker out!' as a kind of 'thanks' for us bringing them out in 1992. I will never, ever forget this act of generosity on the part of PANTERA. For a band to ignore to industry to the point that PANTERA did is something that I doubt we will ever see again. To put me on stage in front of 20,000 people a night in 1998, like I did for them in 1992, is one of the highlights of my life. On the road with me at the time was Jimmy Flemion of THE FROGS on guitar. He made THE DARKNESS look like Perry Como in the stage costume department. Jimmy would come on-stage in full 7-foot green sequin wings, making him look like a giant, which accentuated his frame — the man stands 6' 6" tall with ease. To go out on-stage every night looking like a heavy metal Liberace in front of PANTERA, the most hardcore fucking audience you could ever play for, took gonads of steel. The last night of the tour, in Dayton Ohio @ Hare Arena, I turn around and what do I see? Dimebag Darrell, in his own custom made full 7-foot green paper mache wings, flying around the stage looking like Mothra on acid. He had spent all day backstage making his own set of Flemion wings, then rocked along side us in a paper mache 7-foot wingspan. I read that the shooter, who shall remain nameless, attended this exact show in 1998, in Dayton, Ohio. That makes me sick. To know one of the most fun nights in my life was actually shared with this scumbag watching us blows my mind. It is hard to think about. Also, what is it about Columbus? Not only was it the first place I ever played on the road, it is the exact city where my run as Jesus in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' came to an unexpected end. I also talked to Rick, the owner of the Alrosa, on a cellphone the night before the play ended. Things seem to start and end in Columbus. Weird, but perhaps worth mentioning. After we left the PANTERA tour in '98 Dimebag still kept in touch. When we played Dallas in a club in the Deep Ellum district, I turn around backstage before the show & who is standing there in the (cramped) quarters but none other than Dimebag Darrell! He has brought along Dave Williams, the late lead singer for DROWNING POOL, two PANTERA crew dudes, and 3 or 4 members of the Dallas Stars hockey team. Everyone is doing shots (trying something new!) and me and Dime are catching up before the show. He asks me if it's ok if he films the show. 'Sure', I say. Then halfway through the show, Dave Williams comes onstage and rips right into his famous 'Sebastian Bach impression!' This dude had me down better than I do myself! Dimebag was the camera man, on his back onstage filming me doing me, and Dave Williams doing me, together onstage, running between our legs and jumping around trying to get the best shot. We had a kickass time that night and Dime told me the band fucking rocked. I remember him really checking us out and giving me opinions etc. after the show. The man cared, plain and simple. Around 1999 I was called by producer and friend Michael Wagener to record some songs for an upcoming Randy Rhoads tribute album. He told me to contact guitarist friends of mine to see if they wanted to participate. Again, Dimebag Darrell was at the top of my list. We called him up and I got him on the horn and he was totally into the project. We collaborated on the song 'Believer' and it is one of the most treasured moments of my career in the studio. Dimebag's lead totally shreds, of course! I am just glad I got to record at least one song with the best metal guitar player of all time. Wish I could have done more! Dimebag was also not afraid, ever, to tell it like it is. I remember being at his club in Dallas, one night after a show. He was rolling his eyes at me, drunk, like he wanted to tell me something. Finally at the end of the night, I said to him 'Dude what up? You wanna tell me something?' He kept rolling his eyes and then said to me — loud — 'Duuuuuuuuuuude, you know why people talk shit behind your back dude? Because they don't fucking understand you!' I could tell he thought this was important to tell me. 'But you know what, mutherfucker? I am so crazy that I UNDERSTAND YOU! Yes I fucking do! FFFuuccckk!!!!! I UNDERSTAND your crazy ass, man!!!!' He slobbered into my face. But I could tell he meant what he said. He was telling me that he was so nuts that he actually even understood me, which was a backhanded way of telling me he dug what I did and for me to keep on doing it. He was a smart guy and said alot of heavy things amidst an insane world of rock'n'roll fantasy. As someone whom I respected as a fan, and as a friend, it meant a lot to me for him to say shit like that to me. Which is why I always cranked his music to get psyched for a show. Two days before he died, we were playing Istanbul, Turkey for the first time. After the show, we had a six-hour drive to the next town, Ankara, Turkey, where we had a gig on December 8 (Ralph Santolla's birthday, and the night Darrell and John Lennon were killed). On the way to the show, at about four in the morning, we stopped by the side of the road to get gas and something to eat. Unbelievably, they had about 30 cassettes for sale. One of these cassettes, on the side of the road in Turkey, was PANTERA's 'Far Beyond Driven'. This was crazy we thought, 'Holy Shit' we all exclaimed, 'They sell fucking PANTERA cassettes on the side of the road in Turkey, how crazy is that!!' In retrospect, it is quite strange that PANTERA was there in amongst mostly Turkish music cassettes. Needless to say we bought the tape and played it on repeat till we got to Ankara at around 8 am. I remember drifting off to sleep looking outside the window looking at the Turkish countryside, listening to 'Becoming' thinking how fucking cool Dimebag's guitar sounded. 24 hours later, he would no longer be alive on this planet. It still makes no sense... My favorite Dimebag Darrell memory of all was when he was staying at my house for the 'Rock Buds' gig. It was late morning in my house and I was awoken by the delicious smell of bacon being cooked downstairs. I got out of bed to go find Dimebag and wake him up. I went downstairs, and then to his guest room, but I could not find Dimebag. On my way back downstairs to the kitchen, I peeked my head into my son Paris' room, who was about 7 at the time. There was Dimebag Darrell, sitting in a little kids' toy chair, playing my son's miniature Gibson guitar, which was plugged into his mini Marshall Stack! 'Hey, Dime' I said, 'Dude, c'mon downstairs, breakfast is ready bro!! Maria made french toast and bacon let's get it on!!!!!!!' Dimebag said to me, 'Hold up, bro!! I am doing something here, hold it up! Hang on one second I am teaching your boy somethin'!!' He had been in my sons room showing him guitar riffs all morning. He thought this was an important thing to do, and the memory of Dimebag sitting in my kids room showing him guitar chords is etched in my mind forever. We all went downstairs, me, Dime, and Paris, and along with Maria, we enjoyed a home cooked breakfast of french toast, maple syrup, bacon and coffee. He loved the meal and let us all know how much he appreciated our hospitality. I remember it like yesterday. Because even though he was the greatest metal guitar player ever, he was also something even more important and impressive than that: a great human being. Someone you would be proud to have at your dinner table. Someone you could trust with your own children. That was Dimebag Darrell. A classy, talented, one-of-a-kind guy with 'Hulk Blood' and the Ace Frehley solo album cover tattooed on his flesh. A friend. A God. Stronger Than All. I Remember You Dimebag Darrell! You are an inspiration to me the rest of my life. Love and Respect, Sebastian Bach

End of December so that means it’s BEST OF/END OF/WORST OF List time! As evidenced by the blog title I’m just going to be doing a summary (not in ranking order) of my favourite memories from 2017. I won’t even bother with a “Worst Of” because we all know about the terrible things that happened this year, things that we will still be dealing with long past 2018.
I personally am a huge fan of New Year’s Eve. Yes practically resolutions are never fulfilled and everything is extra expensive but I love the hopefulness that usually permeates around this time of year. The new year looks so shiny and new and there really is something seductive about (hopefully) becoming a new or better person.
The last day of 2017 is a chiller. I was out taking a walk at around 4:30 and the air was so crisp and sharp but the light was so soft. It made me think about the year ahead, all shiny and new; hard and cold as yet untouched with familiar warmth. Daylight seemed to try it’s hardest to cling to the very end. The sky was all pale blues and soft rosy pinks. It made me the streetlight glow feel so golden yellow and the moon is full and such a pure perfect white, it looks like a pearl in the sky.
I hope I become a better person than I was in 2017. I hope that I will have a lot of fun memories as I did in 2017. And now, in no particular order, my favourite 2017 memories.
Art Shows: Mystical Landscapes, Blue Whale @ ROM and Georgia O’Keeffe @ AGO
I got to see some really cool gallery exhibits this year thanks to Helen. Mystical Landscapes was nice, got to see some of the classic Monet’s and Van Gogh’s. My favourite ones that I saw was the Blue Whale during one of the ROM’s Friday Night Lives and and the Georgia O’Keeffe at AGO’s First Thursdays.
The Blue Whale was really cool; whales are gigantic and everyone knows that but seeing it was really awe inspiring. I think it’s heart is like the size of a Fiat lol. I really really loved the Georgia O’Keefe exhibit. It was quite big and some of my favourite pieces were: – Lake George Reflection – Flower Abstraction 1924 – Abstraction White Rose – Horse’s Skull with Pink Rose – Farmhouse Window and Door (this one is really cool to see in person because it looks 3D or layered paper but it’s just paint.) – Mule’s Skull with Pink Poinsettias – From the Faraway, Nearby – Rust Red Hills – Red Hills and Bones – Red and Yellow Cliffs – Wall with Green Door 1953 – My Front Yard, Summer
I wish that you could see what I see out the windows – the earth pink and yellow cliffs to the north – the full pale moon about to go down in an early evening lavender sky behind a very long beautiful tree-covered mesa to the west- pink and purple hills in front an the scrubby fine dull of cedars- and a feeling of much space- it is a very beautiful world. Georgia O’Keeffe
Lol my celebrity encounter of the year happened when I was at the O’Keeffe show, I saw Camila Mendes from Riverdale walk by. I was honestly star struck. She walked by and I literally stood there gaping and then had a moment of panic because I wanted to chase after her but I also had to find Helen who had gone up ahead. I finally found her and then we spent the rest of the night running around the AGO looking for her but she had went back to her hotel to live tweet Riverdale lol.
Women’s March
The Women’s March was the first protest that I’ve ever been to. My mom thought it was dumb of me for going because, “what is it really going to do?” which is a sentiment held by a lot of people.
I went with Rebekah and it was a really fun experience. The turn out was much greater than I expected, not just in Toronto but all around the world. It felt nice being part of that crowd all with a similar goal.
Brunch Club
Brunch times with my Y&E girls and seeing baby Celeste! Lol it’s nice seeing Mei’s 1st OG team and Celeste who is the cutest baby in the entire world.
Dangerous Dan’s
All the times Rebekah, Precillia and I would go to Dangerous Dan’s. We’d always get the same thing, a coffee shake for me and an uber Amy grilled cheese, with fries or onion rings on the side. Precillia would always get the gyros with a side of pierogies and Rebekah would get a grilled cheese and the owner would always tease her for being a vegetarian. And the very best, we’d get a cookie cow pie to share.
Unfortunately it closed due to the increasing gentrification, but the memories of going there starving with Precillia and Rebekah, hearing the rest of the staff yell at Heather (or Helen? I don’t remember) just laughing and eating the most delicious food was truly some of the best times.
My first time at a vape lounge
The day of the TRL sale, (Rebekah and I made out like a bandit, the books were like FIFTY CENTS!!!!) Rebekah took Precillia and I to a vape lounge for the first time. I don’t know if it was what she rolled or if it’s because other people were smoking but I have never gotten that high in my life.
We were discussing middle school crushes and it was my turn, I stopped right in the middle of my story and I felt like it was so hard for me to speak and I could not stop laughing, my voice got so high it was practically a squeak.
Birthday Party @ BATL
This year for my birthday we went axe throwing and also shot bows and arrows. I don’t know what was my favourite part… seeing old friends and catching up, when they gave us photos of Trump to put in the bullseye…
Actually, the highlight was when we played the most intense game of gigantic Jenga of my life.
Escape Rooms
This year we really got into escape rooms. Two of the ones we did were super scary and one of them we beat! The first one we did we were all locked in individual stalls and had to work our way out of them, the second one was a diamond heist so I got to live out my dream of being an actual cat burglar.
By far the scariest one we did was for Precillia’s birthday. The theme of the house is that we broke into a haunted house but it really turned out to be a murder house. And we had to break through a series of clues to try to escape. I am a big fucking baby so I was useless and spent the whole time screaming. As far as escape rooms went it was really atmospheric. It gave us a lot of fun puzzles to solve that were really hard. And we got to move around the small room by climbing through a hidden cabinet, running up and down the stairs, pulling things out of grates etc. The hardest part was the actual physical component. We had to make it across this set of monkey bars, I went first and fell into the foam–Rebekah was the only one to make it across. Unfortunately we ran out of time but we made it nearly to the end. Rebekah was the Judas and would have sacrificed us all if we had the time.
All the visits to Doc
Whether I was freezing in the winter, or getting a sun burn during the summer or any of the visits by myself… hanging out at Doc was always a fun time. Riverdale park is gorgeous. My favourite thing is to go there listening to opera and reading.
Summer in Port Dover
This summer Precillia told us about Port Dover which is one of the few beaches in Ontario that has palm trees. There are only three of them but a guy wanted them here so badly he planted them and they stand there lol. Port Dover is truly one of the best beaches I’ve been to in Ontario. I wish we were near ocean water but the water in Port Dover is pretty nice for lake water. We’ve only been three times but each time was amazing. I think my favourite was the second time when Precillia, Rebekah and Ayan went. I think it was after a storm or a storm was coming but we stayed out in the water as the sky turned clear to grey to all these different shades of blue. We saw a rainbow and that day Rebekah and Precillia found twenty dollars in the water and we also got a football from these guys that were chilling near us. Sitting in Precillia’s car, loose limbed and sun kissed eating salty messy Subway sandwiches before Precillia sped us off into the night that was so blue it felt like we were being wrapped up in it, it was so thick. Every time I hear “Sex on Fire” I can feel Precillia’s car flying down the road and the blue of the night blocking out the sound of the world as that “YeahhhHhHhHhHhHHHHhhh” fills my ears.
Bruce Peninsula
So, we did everything right starting off the trip lol. We set out really early, got all of our snacks and drove all the way up there… only to stand in the woods for a bit. The Bruce Peninsula has grown so much in popularity, especially because of the Canada Park’s Pass that there were only a few slots during the day that we could go and all of those were filled up. In the end we ended up going to Port Dover.
Kudos to Precillia for the drive because it was long AF. We eventually got so hungry we were looking for the nearest place to eat and I think we drove to an A&W in some small town. It was full of old white people but it was easily the cleanest and nicest looking A&W we’d ever been in lol.
Rebekah had an edible that she split with me and it really gave me a new appreciation for Ontario. I truly live in a beautiful province, there were so many gorgeous fields and fields of flowers and farm stands and we saw Mennonites just trundling along beside us in their horse and buggy.
Carly Rae Jepsen @ TSO
For Canada’s 150th birthday, actual Canadian treasure Carly Rae Jepsen played her greatest hits accompanied by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. I went with Precillia and it was truly a magical night. Everyone was dancing and singing along, it was just a fun night with great pop music full of love.
Janet and Petr visiting
Janet is officially back in Canada with her husband Petr!!!! They came up to visit me for a week and I was ecstatic because I had my foodie buddy back. We ate at some of my favourite restaurants in Toronto such as Descendant for Detroit style pizza, Maha’s for Egyptian food, Hot Star fried chicken, Patois, FuZen, Tsujiri and some of my Kensington Market favourites as well.
Friendsgiving2k17
The second annual Friendsgiving was even more lit than the first if you can believe it! We got a beautiful house with a sauna and stuff this time because I got a credit from AirBnB because they cancelled my original reservation. I have like 5 memories from that night because I decided to compete with Tsering but I cherish all 5 of them. I know we did White Elephant, we had a lovely family dinner, I think Beer Pong was played and we played Monopoly for a few rounds and then Precillia and I murdered a unicorn cake.
Expectations are HIGH for #Friendsgiving2k18 but know that Precillia, Rebekah, Ayan and I are going to pull it off.
Anyways, those are some of my favourite memories of 2017! I know I had many more and I’m excited for what 2018 has to offer. I hope it’s nothing but good things for all of us.
Happy New Year’s Eve!
xoxo Cat
