The Babysitter (2017)
Tumblr media
It may not sound like much to call The Babysitter director McG’s best movie but you'd never guess it came from the one who delivered us This Means War and Terminator: Salvation. Bloody, funny, occasionally touching, with a terrific cast, some neat twists, and a couple of well-placed scares, it’s a blast.
Pre-teen Cole (Judah Lewis) dusts himself off from yet another encounter with the neighborhood bully (Miles J. Harvey) but he’s not upset. His parents are going out, which means Bee (Samara Weaving) is babysitting tonight. She’s always got something fun planned. When Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers Bee and her friends (Hana Mae Lee, Robbie Smell, Bell Thorne, and Andrew Bachelor) are about to perform a satanic ritual that requires his blood.
It’s almost too bad the title gives away that Bee's villainous. Before you find out she’s drinking blood out of a cup and consorting with demons, she and Cole are so good together you hope the movie will be just about them hanging out. You wish you had a babysitter as cool as Bee. She’s funny, always knows just what to say, and has all of the best movie lines memorized. It doesn’t hurt she’s played by Samara Weaving. If anyone can teach Cole to stand up for himself, it’s her. And she does… but not the way she expected. Once the movie does full horror-comedy, it’s the kid versus the teens and by the end of it, the floors will be slick with the red stuff.
Whether you’re getting the scene ready for a punchline or a scare, timing is everything. The Babysitter demonstrates this well. The script by Brian Duffield sets up the stage. Cole is being chased. He just barely manages to squeeze through the doorway when suddenly a gory death comes out of nowhere. It’s like one of those roller coasters that amps the dips by spraying you with water except it’s blood and guts thrown at the screen. You’re so shocked it takes a moment to figure out the appropriate reaction: “Ewwww!” followed by belly laughs. You're kept on your toes by being led by what you think are standard movie conventions that turn out to be subversions. You think you’ve outsmarted The Babysitter but it was playing the long con. All that buildup was not an answer to Cole’s problem, it was a joke. It’s twice as funny when both he and you have been fooled.
The Babysitter isn't exactly revolutionary and more than once you’ll wonder where all the adults have gone. There’s an awful racket going on. You’d think someone would investigate. You’re having a great time so why spoil it with technicalities? The writing is tight and all of the performers are reveling in the dialogue they've been given. Weaving steals the show but everyone has more than a couple of great moments. A scene mid-end credits hints at a sequel and if it's anything like this, I can't wait. (September 13, 2020)

Thoughts : I See You (2019)
Tumblr media
One of the silver linings about spending my days working at my warehouse position is the benefit of good conversation with my coworkers.  You learn a lot about the human condition, you find yourself open to different viewpoints you may not have considered previously, and on occasion, you receive good recommendations for music and movies.  My office neighbor and myself have been trading film recommendations and opinions recently, and he scored a direct hit when he told me to watch I See You.
When a ten year old boy mysteriously vanishes after biking alone in a local park, Detective Greg Harper (Jon Tenney) is assigned lead on the case.  Spitzky (Gregory Alan Williams), his partner on the case, immediately sees connections to a previously unsolved kidnapping, which is unsettling to both detectives.  Harper is further troubled by the situation in his home : his wife Jackie (Helen Hunt) was recently involved in a tryst with former lover Todd (Sam Trammell), which she deeply regrets.  Her situation is worsened by the fact that she is not only being harshly judged by her husband, but by her son Connor (Judah Lewis) as well.  With so much turmoil in the family home teetering on the edge, it only becomes a matter of time before everyone’s sanity is pushed to the limit, and with the help of outside forces and old ghosts in the form of family secrets, the Harper family finds themselves crumbling in spectacular fashion.
When people talk about the thriller/suspense genre, it is films like this that exemplify the structure they speak of.  The tension in this film is seemingly infinite but extremely taut, with string after string of information introduced that furthers the symbolic pulling to an almost explosive point.  On top of this tension, there is a rich tapestry of broken character relationships and shifting dynamics of morally-based power dynamics that keeps the viewer unsure of whom to root for, with only varying degrees of bad presented to us rather than clear good and bad characters.  To further the collective madness of both the story participants and the viewer, seeds are planted through dialogue and actions that make you question the reality of the film initially, but no seed planted is left unattended.
As these seeds of information bud in front of our eyes, the story genre seems to shift... from a sort of murder mystery with touches of a horror film, to a psychological thriller, with a brief stint in a found footage film, to becoming a story of the collective exorcising of demons, both personal and social.  With so many spinning plates at hand, an amazing job is done of shifting the audiences’ emotional base from character to character, only to turn your emotional expectations on their head as you learn more about the situation presented.  Similar to the viewer experience, this narrative presentation provides the characters with trust and moral high ground that shifts like a hot potato between those involved.
The camerawork in this film is masterful, with the camera serving as a floating, invasive spirit at times, and as a fly on the wall at others, with moves and setups very reminiscent of properties like Breaking Bad or A Ghost Story.  In turn, as the lofty narrative begins to find itself presented by the factual information revealed in the progress of the story, the camera gets more intimate and grounded, while still keeping its invader-like presence.  As mentioned several times, the narrative keeps on giving right through the closing moments, with every character evolving and changing in regards to their base natures and the events laid out in front of them.
Helen Hunt wonderfully played all the proper victim/victimized character beats, only to find herself strangely validated in the most rewarding ways due to the previously mentioned strong writing.  Jon Tenney uses what feels like resentment to subtly ratchet up the suspense, only for it to be revealed as a much darker set of motivators.  Judah Lewis allows his youth to drive the emotion he displays to the point that the pulling of the narrative strings also serves as a huge moment of abrupt clarity for him.  Libe Barer performs as a fly jumping into various webs, with no idea that she is carrying the spider along in the form of Owen Teague.  Supporting performances by Gregory Alan Williams and Erika Alexander also stand out, with Sam Trammell getting the opportunity to play purposely ridiculous for a brief moment of dark levity.
Independent gems like these are always a pleasant discovery, and in my opinion, serve as the true lifeblood of the film industry.  Maybe one day, directors will rule like they did in the 1970s, and films like I See You will be box office successes in the same scope that they are wonderfully executed works of independent art.  I am only hoping that, in sharing my views on the film, I have not revealed too much, and that your experience with it during your first viewing will be as rewarding as mine was.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
Tumblr media
The Babysitter: Killer Queen desperately tries to emulate what worked in the first and fails just about every single time. Even those who hated 2017's The Babysitter would classify it as a masterpiece after this.
Two years after the events of the first film, Cole (Judah Lewis) is unable to convince anyone that his babysitter, Bee (Samara Weaving), was the leader of a murderous satanic cult. His parents (Leslie Bibb and Ken Marino) think he’s nuts and he’s been friend-zoned by his childhood sweetheart, Melanie (Emily Alyn Lind). When she invites him to a party, he’s shocked to discover she and her friends are planning to use his blood for the same kind of ritual he narrowly escaped. Worse, Bee’s apostles (played by Andrew Bachelor, Hana Mae Lee, Bella Thorne, and Robbie Amell) have returned from the dead.
It’s the same movie we saw before but with twice the killers. Not even new killers either. Melanie (now unconvincingly turned into a villain) is the new Bee. The misfit girl who happens to be at the party, Phoebe (Jenna Ortega), is the new Melanie. The other partygoers are carbon copies of the cultists who tried to kill Cole the first time. Because when we see a sequel, what we really want is a remake, right? The deaths are slightly different but none are surprising, which takes away any punch (comedic or otherwise) they might’ve had. You sit there, as quiet as a corpse while the plot move along in obvious ways. There isn’t a scare to be found.
But maybe you weren’t expecting to wet your pants in terror. You came for the blood-soaked laughs. Tough luck. Written by Dan Lagana, Brad Morris, Jimmy Warden and McG (who directs again), Killer Queen tries hard to duplicate Brian Duffield’s humour. Their attempts are embarrassing to watch, like a couple of kids trying to act out The Babysitter to convince you that it was soooo good. You think it can’t get any worse than the same gags copied and pasted? Just wait until you get to the end. This whole time, you’ve been wondering where Samara Weaving is hiding. There’s no way they’d make the movie without her. She was integral to the original’s success! Killer Queen found a convoluted way to bring everyone else back. Her too. It requires hackneyed, contradicting and nonsensical retcons, but McG assumes you'll be so happy to see her again you won't care. Did the people who made this movie not think we’d seen the first one? Did they even see it?
A scene during the end credits hints at yet be more to come, which is a scary thought. The Babysitter: Killer Queen is the Men in Black II of this series. The premise is a flower pot smashed onto the head of fans. Each joke it a shard of glass you have to pick out of your bloodied scalp. Best to avoid the whole thing and pretend like it doesn’t exist.
