Guinness World Records is saddened to learn of the death of the world's oldest man, Juan Vicente Perez Mora (Venezuela, born 27 May 1909), at the age of 114. He would have turned 115 next month.

His death was confirmed by Freddy Bernal, the governor of Táchira, Venezuela, where Juan lived.

He wrote on X:

"Our dear Juan Vicente Perez Mora today, with deep sadness and pain, we say goodbye to you, to that archetype of a man from Tachira, humble, hard-working, peaceful, enthusiastic about family and tradition.

Together with my wife and children, we had the pleasure and the pride of meeting him and sharing with his loved ones.

My old Don Vicente, we will always remember him for his optimism in life, for faith, hope, and that deep love for our state of Tachira.

He will always be a symbol of goodness, wisdom and joy, which is why his legacy will live forever in our hearts and in our lives.

Rest in peace my dear old man, my Don Juan Vicente. We will never forget you."

President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela also paid tribute, writing:

"Juan Vicente Perez Mora has transcended into eternity at 114 years old.

From the town of El Cobre, he gave Venezuela the Guinness Record title for being the oldest man in the world.

I send my hug and condolences to his family and to all the people of El Cobre, Tachira state. May God receive him in his holy glory!"

Juan Vicente was confirmed as the oldest man living after Saturnino de la Fuente Garcia (Spain, born 11 February 1909) passed away on 18 January 2022 at 112 years and 341 days.

Juan was announced as the oldest man living at 112 years and 253 days, as of 4 February 2022.

He attributed his longevity to "working hard, resting on holidays, going to bed early, drinking a glass of aguardiente every day, loving God, and always carrying him in his heart."

Juan Vicente was married to Ediofina del Rosario García for 60 years until her passing in 1997.

Together, they established a family of 11 children, consisting of six sons and five daughters.

He later welcomed 42 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren into the family.

In 2019, he celebrated his 110th birthday, becoming the first male supercentenarian from Venezuela.

After living through both World Wars, seeing the invention of the television, and witnessing the landing of a man on the moon, Juan Vicente also survived COVID-19 in 2020.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

The next oldest man living is expected to be 112-year-old Gisaburo Sonobe of Japan, pending confirmation from his family.

There is a need for intense scrutiny with old-age claims.

Caracas experienced a strong urban construction growth after the death of the dictator Juan Vicente Gómez in 1936 until the 70´s. Important political changes: European and Latin-American migrations, and especially petroleum costs variations made Venezuelan mentality change at a speeding race to new perspectives that were demonstrated in different areas, architecture being the main element of change towards a modern city. Besides the big social differences, from then on, the Venezuelans have conceived to an extreme this modern period of time as the dream of a better future. In that time, important plastic artist irrupted during the 40´s, 50´s and 60´s; Escuela de caracas (landscaping), Los Disidentes (abstraction), and the Techo de La Ballena (informalism) were some of the most important avant-garde movements. Curiously enough, the Venezuelan artist Pedro Centeno Vallenilla, formed under the fascist Italian regime and exhibitor of a peculiar nationalist theme with a characterized mannerist and exaggerated aesthetic, worked independently from the avant-garde movements, he was even considered as a minor artist by them. Due to Vallenilla´s profound political views at the time, he was able to establish himself as the official painter during the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez in the 50´s, where buildings like the National Capitol, the National Military or collections and private homes were decorated with his Works. Nowadays his works are still hung in these official buildings, where the nation’s history and the autochthonous elements together with the exaggerated and idealized aesthetic of the body and race, are the main characters in his work. What interests me is how his fertile visual language feeds the creation myths of the birth of the nation and establishes it like a part of the Venezuelan culture, in the political, social, military and even economic grounds of the country; where his work exemplifies, maybe fortunately, the prejudice, contradictions and acceptations on how Venezuelans want to see ourselves and how we wanted to be seen (and still want to be), contrasting with the exacerbated and vulnerable narcissism that fundaments itself on the starting resentments that we drag on form the colonial times. Finally I would like to focus Centeno Vallenilla´s work, independently from his pictorial quality, like the heir of a confused Venezuelan modernity in conception and ideology, confronted in the same way with the confused and complex political and social times that we are now living. Where the frontier between liberal ideologies and economic pragmatism associated with the conservatives, are faded together with the political ways of the country. In the film and photos, works of Centeno Vallenilla dedicated to the nation’s history, race and traditions, are converted into a tableaux vivant by people that come from the marginated areas of Caracas, but that are situated in the natural context of this artist, these spaces are modern but at the same time unused buildings, like a mansion turned into an office building; Nevertheless, these models try again and again, without achieving the goal, of recreating work by work The forced postures of the personalities represented in Vallenilla´s Works, demonstrating that there is a possibility that the idiosyncrasy of Venezuela comes from the eternal intent, with form but without meaning, of imagining improvised utopias that result in mere rehearsals of the country.

El Museu d’Art Contemporani Vicente Aguilera Cerni de Vilafamés, en colaboración con la Galería Espai Nivi y comisariada por el profesor de la Universitat Politècnica de València Alejandro Mañas García, presenta la exposición «Diálogo de dos Colecciones. Espai Nivi · MACVAC».

Esta unión estratégica entre dos instituciones apasionadas por el arte contemporáneo no solo destaca el valor de ambas colecciones, sino que también resalta la vitalidad de la cultura ejercida desde

fuera de los espacios centrales. La exposición «Diálogo de dos Colecciones» celebra los quince años de Espai Nivi, una galería cuya valiosa contribución ha trascendido lo local para alcanzar proyección nacional e internacional. Su colección, cuidadosamente curada y en constante crecimiento, reúne obras de renombrados artistas de diversos estilos y medios, capturando la esencia misma del arte contemporáneo y ofreciendo una visión única de su evolución.

Esta exposición conjunta presenta una selección de obras de pequeño formato de la colección Mariano Poyatos y Filomena Lorenzo en diálogo con piezas del Museo de Vilafamés. Este encuentro entre las obras estratégicamente dispuestas a lo largo del recorrido del museo, genera un diálogo fascinante.

IDEA acusa a México, Colombia y Brasil de tolerar dictadura de Maduro en Venezuela

MIAMI, Fla. * 14 de agosto 2024. ) Efe Un grupo de 32 exjefes de Estado arremetieron este miércoles contra los gobiernos de Brasil, Colombia y México por sumarse al propósito del dictador Nicolás Maduro de mantenerse en el poder, lo que resulta "escandaloso" y significa un verdadero atraco al derecho democrático interamericano. Los exmandatarios, que forman parte de la Iniciativa Democrática de España y las

Américas (IDEA), alertaron además de que Maduro pretende incluso promover nuevas elecciones, una acción que "anularía la voluntad popular ya expresada de manera inequívoca" en las urnas el pasado 28 de julio. Semejante acción, prosigue IDEA, desconocería la "derrota incuestionable de la dictadura de Maduro", como lo corroboran los informes técnicos de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) y del Centro Carter. Se refiere además este grupo al informe de un panel de expertos de la ONU que reconoce que las actas de la oposición "exhiben todos los dispositivos de seguridad de los protocolos originales de los resultados" electorales. Mientras que el anuncio del resultado realizado por el Consejo Nacional Venezolano (CNE), que proclamó ganador a Maduro "sin la divulgación de resultados tabulados a los candidatos, no tiene precedentes en elecciones democráticas contemporáneas". A juicio de los exjefes de gobierno, la ONU y la OEA han establecido que la administración de justicia en Venezuela "carece totalmente de independencia e imparcialidad y es cómplice necesaria en los crímenes de lesa humanidad que hoy conoce la Corte Penal Internacional". Denunció IDEA que ya suman miles los prisioneros y desaparecidos, con un número importante de asesinatos y torturas a raíz de las pasadas elecciones presidenciales. Sostiene que "la dictadura venezolana" pretende, además, "diluir la responsabilidad jurídica de quienes falsificaron los resultados electorales" mediante la intervención del Poder Electoral, el Tribunal Supremo de Justicia, la cúpula de la Fuerza Armada y el Ministerio Público. Oldest man in the world, dead at 114, prayed the Rosary twice daily

Juan Vicente Pérez Mora, a twice-daily prayer of the rosary who at his death was the confirmed oldest man in the world, died on April 2, just weeks before his 115th birthday.

Mora held the title of oldest man in the world for a few short years. He was awarded the distinction by Guinness World Records on Feb. 4, 2022, when he was 112 years and 253 days old.

Born on May 27, 1909, in Venezuela, Mora was the ninth child of 10 born to Eutiquio del Rosario Pérez Mora and Edelmira Mora.

In 1914 the family moved to Los Pajuiles, a village in San José de Bolivar. When Mora was 5 years old, he started to work with his father and siblings in agriculture, specifically coffee harvesting and sugar cane.

At 10, he began school but was only able to attend for five months because his teacher became very ill. However, Mora was able to learn how to read and write thanks to a book his teacher had given him prior to her health declining. 

Mora was also a sheriff in Caricuena from 1948 to 1958.

He was married to Ediofina del Rosario García for 60 years. She passed away in 1997. The couple had six sons and five daughters. The family has now grown to include 42 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Among his family, Mora was known for his faith. He strived to build a solid relationship with God, his relatives, and he prayed the rosary twice a day.

Mora told Guinness World Records his secret to living a long life was to “work hard, rest on holidays, go to bed early, drink a glass of aguardiente [a strong liquor made from sugar cane] every day, love God, and always carry him in your heart.”

He added that he wanted to be remembered “as a hardworking man, faithful to his wife and his religion.”

La ROSS ha ganado una fecha de abono para su ciclo Gran Sinfónico, pero las condiciones de uso del Maestranza no han cambiado, y por eso los saltos entre los programas siguen dominando el calendario: ningún concierto en diciembre, tres en abril, se termina en julio...

Es evidente el esfuerzo de Juan Luis Pérez por llamar al público: esa apertura con Carmina Burana, la célebre cantata de Orff, es como colocar un megáfono con veinte megavatios en lo alto de la Giralda. En julio sólo se puede terminar con algo que concite de igual forma el entusiasmo general, y la 9ª de Beethoven no parece mala apuesta. Entre medias, acaso el único clásico popular sea el Concierto de Aranjuez (que tocará Gallardo del Rey), pero hay muchas otras obras de sobra conocidas por el aficionado medio (4ª de Mahler, Concierto de Sibelius, Enigma de Elgar, Petrushka y Consagración de Stravinski, 2ª de Rajmáninov, Noches de Falla, 6ª de Chaikovski, Concierto para violonchelo de Schumann...).

Por seguir con el repertorio, hay un estreno del sevillano Daahoud Salim y piezas de Gubaidulina y la también sevillana Noelia Lobato como oberturas de un par de programas, además de un Schoenberg en audaz interludio de la 9ª beethoveniana. Dos citas resultan un tanto especiales: la que dirigirá desde el puesto de concertino Alexa Farré, un programa casi camerístico con Bach, Mozart y Shostakóvich, y la que reúne a dos hispano-venezolanos, el director Manuel Hernández Silva y el trompetista Pacho Flores, para un programa que viene casi cerrado de fábrica e incluye obras con ritmos americanos, entre ellas un Concierto de Paquito D’ Rivera recién galardonado con un Grammy latino.

Entre los directores sólo hay dos que repitan (Marc Soustrot y György Ráth), y del resto conviene saludar la vuelta de Sagripanti y Coelho, que entusiasmaron en su momento, la presencia de Chichon y de la griega Zoe Zeniodi (que harán también ópera en el teatro) y una terna de primeras espadas españolas: González, Macías, García Calvo. El nivel de solistas se ha elevado, pues la nómina incluye a los pianistas Eldar Nebolsin (2º de Liszt), Juan Floristán (1º de Bartók) e Iván Martín (Falla), la violinista Alexandra Conunova (Sibelius), la soprano Lucía Martín-Cartón (4ª de Mahler) y el violonchelista Pablo Ferrández (Schumann). Además el Cuarteto de Guitarras de Andalucía debuta en el teatro (Concierto andaluz de Rodrigo) y Vicent Morelló, flautista de la orquesta, tocará el Concierto de Nielsen. La vuelta del Orfeón Donostiarra a la ciudad también es, por supuesto, noticia.

Hay, en fin, motivos de sobra para saludar con esperanza este año que debe ser de transición, pero todo quedará en nada si el melómano sevillano no responde de la única forma que ayudaría a la orquesta: con su asistencia.
