Are Napoleon and Josephine in Heaven?

I had been wondering: what are the two’s states of salvation? If the Christian God is real (because no one can truly know until one dies), would they be in Heaven together?  My research and conclusion under the cut!

I did some digging and research, particularly into Napoleon’s final years on St. Helena and Josephine’s last will and testament. That’s where the answer lies!

Sidenote: It’s hard for me to believe in Hell, even as a Christian… but this question will be answered in a traditional sense of salvation in the Christian faith. Also, I am neither a theologian nor history professor; just a lover of theology and history.

Josephine makes very clear that she is a Christian (this can be found in her last will and testament). She also writes that she tried her hardest to have Napoleon keep his faith, but she believes he lost it due to the « infamous courtesans » and their « base flatteries and guilty seductions ». 

Now onto Napoleon. If you only studied bis pre-Helena life, than you’d think he would not reach salvation. However, in his final exile, while he wrestled with stomach cancer, he called for a priest to give him mass, confession, and last rites. However, he was always concerned with his reputation… and last rites were tradition for European monarchs and rulers. So this might not mean much. (Last rites don’t bring salvation, only belief in Christ Himself)

What does give an idea of his state of grace with the church however, is what he spoke. In a testament of his own, Napoleon says « Every thing in Him astonishes me. His Spirit overawes me, and His will confounds me. Between Him and everyone else in the world there is no possible term of comparison. He is truly a being by Himself. »

His lucid beliefs suggest he did come back to salvation!

TLDR: Yes, it is extremely likely the lovers met again in Heaven! 

Their relationship, messy as it is, is my Roman Empire, so knowing Napoleon and Josephine are probably together again makes me want to cry 🥹
