Day 8 on the JMT and we hiked about 12 miles from Natalie Lake, over Silver Pass and finally ending somewhere along the Mono River. It is around this point that keeping track of the days was a challenge, both the actual date, day of the week, and how long we'd been on the trail. Feral tendencies began setting in and yet, life is surprisingly stable. You wake, you eat, you pack, you hike, you eat some more, you set up camp, you read or meditate or swim, you eat again, and you sleep. Only to repeat the process the next day as the scenery changes around you. Mono Creek was a lovely surprise and ended up being one of our favorite campsites. We were able to find a spot that was not crowded with other hikers and hidden from the trail. As I layed in my tent reading Edward Abbey I listened to the rush of Mono Creek next to us and I swear I could hear the singing of a man. It sounded as if the barrier between the past and the present had become closer and more transparent and I was catching a glimpse through the cracks. It made me wonder about the history of the area. What tribes lived here and what names did they have for the mountains, streams and meadows whose names now bear the titles of white men. Mono Creek hinted at the answer to my question. Mono Creek was named for the Mono tribe. This tribe is often lumped in with the Paiute tribe, but they are their own unique people. "Mono" was a title borrowed from the Yokuts language meaning "Fly People" as the Mono Tribe's main food staple and trading article was fly larvae. I laid back and continued to listen to the song of Mono Creek. What was he singing about? I couldn't make out the words exactly, but the melody was high yet deep and echoed across the canyon. Last week I backpacked a section of the JMT with friends and witnessed 11 year old Max’s accomplishment as he made his way to 12,014 feet, just above Muir pass. This hike was an eye opening experience as I traveled with a wonderful family group that spanned three generations. The trip was designed for a 11 year old Max, but I saw more than just a first backpacking trip. It was the opportunity for a Grandfather, Son, wife and 11 year old grandson to bond and pass down tradition. At times I felt slightly out of place observing the family And friends. But it was ok. The trip was a beautiful experience and I am grateful for the opportunity. Pacific Crest Trail Day 48: This morning Pumper (@bound_away) and I hit Thousand Island Lake - another frame of the seemingly endless Sierra highlight reel - and have perfect weather for the thirteenth day in a row. . After crossing Island Pass (which is hardly a pass compared to everything we’ve come through the past two weeks) we head up to Donahue Pass where we reach the border/entrance of Yosemite (National Park). A quick note to international readers - this name is pronounced yoh-sem-i-tee, not yo-sem-ite, don’t say I never taught you anything. . Despite Yosemite being a glorious place overflowing with natural wonders, it’s also overflowing with mosquitoes. Yes, the terrible, fun-ending, nature-ruining, blood sucking, harbingers of horrible times outdoors are out in force (and I’ve been foolish enough to not carry any repellant with me). The days of snow and cold temperatures keeping them at bay are apparently over and now the suffer-fest commences. . I am starving by the time I reach Tuolumne Meadows (where there’s a road) because I haven’t been able to stop and eat (mosquitoes, etc.). I decide to hitchhike down to Yosemite Valley where I spend the evening poaching people’s leftovers outside the General Store (where everything is absurdly expensive). By the time the sun starts going down I’m filled with chicken strips, french fries, and salad - time for camping. In two days I’m hitchhiking back to Mammoth for more hot springs activities and so tomorrow I’m thinking of just bumming around the Valley. Pretty good plan me thinks. . Day: PCT 919.9 to Tuolumne Meadows via Island Pass and Donahue Pass Day's distance: 22.09 mi / 35.55 km Day's elevation gain: 2,712 ft / 827 m #Sierra #PCT

Day 11 on the JMT and we did not hike at all. Instead, we took what is called, 'a zero day'. The morning was sunny, but as our trail friends and family left us behind to continue their journeys the clouds began to collect. I felt melancholy to see them leave and hoped dearly we might catch up with one or two of them. Thru hiking is like going to summer camp. You are always unrealistically heartbroken to lose people you have only known for a week or so. The tap tap tapping of rain began to ring through my tent and thunder began to collect overhead. As I read the line, 'But - we knew thee not, old man. And there is, I suspect, another feeling alive in each of us as we lug these rotting guts across the desert: satisfaction.' from the chapter, 'Dead Man at Grandview Point,' in Edward Abbey's book, 'Desert Solitaire'. A flash of light illuminated my tent and an almost immediate crack of thunder shook the campground. I did not know it then, but I would soon come to find that with that that flash of light, a hiker had been struck by lightning. He had been leaning against a tree and the lightning struck the tree. At first he was responsive, then he wasn't, and then, after 20 minutes of CPR, the rescue mission turned into a recovery mission. We had our own dead man at Selden Pass. He was only 37. The mood at Muir Trail Ranch turned dark and my own old childhood fears of being struck by lightning began to creep back in. There was genuine concern and sadness at camp as everyone rallied to help and all I could think was, 'Fuck Edward Abbey!' But slowly, the sun came out and I went to the hot springs to warm my cold mood. I watched the helicopter fly through the valley to land in a meadow and I felt such sadness for the young hiker's mother. 'Someone has to call her.' I thought. I remembered my own desires to get wilderness EMT certified. I doubted going forward.
