All ten of these were Muir Pass and Muir Shelter, literally no editing required because the sunset and sunrise was SO AMAZING! I've been wanting to go here since I was a teen. #bucketlist The approach from the south was one of our hardest climbs we did, but it was much rewarded with the freezing and beautiful lakes and the ridiculous beauty that surrounded us! Many of you would assume I had to convince my wife to do this ridiculous adventure with me. However, this was her wish to tackle such a mammoth of an adventure. It didn't take much convincing me, but I did push back at first because I wasn't sure either one of us would enjoy that level of dirty, hard, uncomfortable, strenuous, lengthy commitment that such a thru hike demands. We decided to do it as my sabbatical and I'm so glad that we did this and did it when we did. Wow, much joy, so stoke, many happy, very adventure. #pct #pct2021 #pacificcresttrail #riseandhike #backpacking #thruhike #hikertrash #dirtbagging #kingscanyonnationalpark #sierras #muirpass #muirshelter (at Muir Pass) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTsEZFrlZpM/?utm_medium=tumblr

Day 14 on the JMT and we hiked about 13 miles over Muir Pass. This was the moment in the trip that the passes became more and more like moonscapes. It felt like walking on a wholly different world. Muir Pass going south inclines gently and pleasantly through a series of high alpine lakes. Pikas ran amongst the boulders and every time I caught a glimpse of one I involuntarily squealed, 'PIKAAAAAA!!!' As we came to the top of the pass we paused at the Muir shelter and took in the view. Plant life was beyond scarce. The sky was so blue it was almost purple. The air was thin and silent. There was not a cloud in the sky. We then headed down into the second canyon of the Kings Canyon series. Hiking up is more enjoyable than hiking down, especially when you are navigating steep, rocky terrain. The effort of watching our steps so closely for hours was exhausting. We stopped at a rock called monster rock and waited for Shangri La and Lost and Found to catch up. We wanted to make sure we all ended up at the same campsite for their last night on the trail. They were both headed out of Bishop Pass and back home the next day. Eventually, we all ended up at a lovely campsite just short of the Bishop Pass trailhead in the middle of the canyon. Deer, almost tame, filled the camp chewing on the odd bit of foliage. They eyed us cautiously, but without too much fear. Seeing deer in this way reminded me that even though the Sierras are considered wild, they are still incredibly tame. The large predators of this place have been killed off to such a large degree that the landscape has changed. Wolves no longer wander the canyons. Bears and Mountain Lions are scarce. Throughout the entire trip I never saw anything larger than a coyote - no bears, no cougars, not even snakes. I often felt that something was missing in these hills. What I would not give to see the land as it was only one hundred years ago. . . . #jmt #jmt2021 #johnmuir #johnmuirtrail #johnmuirwilderness #hiking #hikingadventures #hikinglife #hikingculture #muirpass #hike #hikersofinstagram #hikemoreworryless #hikecalifornia #California #californiaadventure #hiker #hikertrash #hikerlife #hikerbabes #hikergirl (at John Muir Wilderness) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTIzsjvFU0Y/?utm_medium=tumblr

Pacific Crest Trail Day 43: I want to make it to Mammoth without having to stop at Muir Trail Ranch or Vermilion Valley Resort (two off-trail locations for either hiker box raids or expensive resupplies in the Sierra) and as part of my mission to do so, I’ve decided that I need to start waking up early. My alarm goes off at 4:45 this morning (until now, I haven’t been setting an alarm and have been waking up naturally around 5:30). I put on a dry (and clean) pair of socks and set off; In true Sierra fashion, my shoes and socks are both soaking wet within the first hour of hiking. . Muir Pass is the last real challenge of the Sierra (from what I remember in 2013), as the passes north of here (Selden, Silver, Island, and Donahue) are relatively easy compared to what I’ve just come through (Forester, Glen, Pinchot, Mather, and now Muir). I find myself mostly alone this morning before meeting a group of four PCT hikers and then running into some rangers who check my permit (for the second time on trail). The trail drops to around 8,000 ft / 2,438 m before beginning a 4,000 ft / 1,219 m climb up to Muir Pass. Fortunately, climbs on the PCT are generally quite gradual; unfortunately, most of this climb is covered in snow. . I arrive at the Muir Pass Shelter on top of Muir Pass and meet a group of PCT hikers taking full advantage of the patch of dry ground near the shelter (this is the only pass with a shelter on it). The way down is just as snow-covered as the way up and it’s nearly 7 mi / 11.3 km of snow walking before I’m back on dry trail. I begin spotting lots of deer as the trail crosses Evolution Creek (I take a thigh-deep alternate via Evolution Meadow to avoid a potentially hazardous crossing) and continues down to close to 8,000 ft / 2,438 m. I’m hungry (the food rationing has begun). . My campsite tonight reminds me greatly of one I had in 2013 and I think there’s a chance it might be the same exact spot. This place must hold some significance in my life. Too tired to think about this now. Sleep. . Day: The Golden Staircase to PCT 854.5 via Muir Pass Day's distance: 32.29 mi / 51.97 km Day's elevation gain: 4,724 ft / 1,440 m #Sierra #PCT

Last week I backpacked a section of the JMT with friends and witnessed 11 year old Max’s accomplishment as he made his way to 12,014 feet, just above Muir pass. This hike was an eye opening experience as I traveled with a wonderful family group that spanned three generations. The trip was designed for a 11 year old Max, but I saw more than just a first backpacking trip. It was the opportunity for a Grandfather, Son, wife and 11 year old grandson to bond and pass down tradition. At times I felt slightly out of place observing the family And friends. But it was ok. The trip was a beautiful experience and I am grateful for the opportunity. Thanks Adam. #muirpass #jmt2019 #johnmuirtrail #pct #pacificcoasttrail #sierranevada #muirhut #adventurebeckons #395north (at Muir Pass) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1fcr-WBoNH/?igshid=11rfcci8nc9d5

Have you been? It was our 14th day on the John Muir Trail. We covered just over 10 miles, including a hike over 11,955’ Muir Pass (our highest yet), where I shot this photo of Muir Hut, erected by the Sierra Club in 1930. A break from the summer heat with a hint of watermelon snow. Did you know snow algae, sometimes called watermelon snow, blood snow, or pink snow, is actually a type of green algae? This type of snow is common during the summer in alpine and costal polar regions. The Sierra Nevada is one of those locations and it can usually be found between 10-14,000 feet. ••• Goddard Divide, Sierra Nevada, Ca #adventurebeckons #395north #mtgoddard #jmt2019 #johnmuir #muirpass (at Muir Pass) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1xVvsRBrv_/?igshid=1ag1nnzc8flwi

A break from the summer heat. Cool temperatures and snow is still up there round 12 - 13,000 feet and up. But the sun at altitude will fry you quick. ••• Goddard Divide, Sierra Nevada, Ca #adventurebeckons #395north #mtgoddard #jmt2019 #johnmuir #muirpass (at Kings Canyon National Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1xNDOKB6GU/?igshid=vyho86phl33p
