She’s so hateful and awful! I love her so much! She has so many neuroses. Her codependence with Jamie is so interesting, how she views him as an extension of herself. All the internalized misogyny? It’s great

2. Arianrhod from the Snow Queen Cycle

No one I know has ever read these books! She’s like a scheming evil queen who’s approaching the end of her reign and is supposed to be like ritually sacrificed at the end of it. So she has herself cloned to try to extend her already unnaturally long lifespan. And she’s just so selfish and jealous and miserable <3

3. Melisande Shahrizai from Kushiel’s Dart

Villain of all time! She’s so hot. The rest of the book is hit or miss but Melisande is insane. I really enjoy how ever present she is in the novel even though she doesn’t actually have that much page time. Her charisma is unmatched

4. Drusilla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer

She’s actually never done anything wrong in her life as far as I’m concerned. Her backstory is so tragic and compelling. The show doesn’t get much into her perspective but the broad brushstrokes are fascinating. I’m forever intrigued by her long running place in the evil vampire polycule and their overall dynamic

5. Mercymorn the First from the Locked Tomb

“‘I don’t mean to be cruel,” she said cruelly’ !!! She’s so shrill, judgmental, and unpleasant! I adore her! Love that she was willing to sacrifice the entire fucking world in order to kill John, even though she very much loves him. The grief and betrayal is just that insurmountable

Hey! So I'm from the Jaime/Lannister side of the fandom but wanted to ask your opinion on where you think GRRM is going with Dany. I don't mean spell out her endgame or anything, but what messages do you think he is trying to impart through her character? I see so much Dark!Dany! theory shaped by the show that has just never really resonated with how I read her in the books. I see her more as a figure who will try to be Queen of Westeros, but will ultimately end up abdicating or even sacrificing herself during the LN because finding "home" is more important to her than ruling... but that is not based on much other than gut feeling. What do you think?

yeah idrgaf about the show tbh. i think it fundamentally misunderstood key themes that the books were exploring. corrupted/mad dany feels so deeply cynical to me. people have been reiterating this: she is a subversive messiah figure & she is given a narrative that is so often reserved for the “male hero”. the gender commentary in that would fall flat on its face to me if she becomes mad fascist female ruler like bffr. yeah, she will get darker come winds, like everyone else she will have to make choices and will face moral dilemmas because she is resolved to continue combatting the institution of slavery. she knows she will not be able to do it without dirtying her hands in some way. i think grrm is gonna explore the concept of necessary force and the question of when it is more moral to take a stand and draw blood: is it justified to cut off and burn something at the root, especially if the alternative is allowing the cancer to exist and continue to spread? the institution of slavery is a wound that cannot just be covered up with a bandaid. like this is a very important aspect of abolition. the only way i can see the idea of “madness” be relevant is in a more subversive john brown paralleling way with how people thought that man was insane bc he wanted to end slavery lmfao. if terrible people think you are mad for attempting to make radical changes that harm them that is a good sign. also would hate her becoming an aerys parallel like in the show like that is cringe bio essentialism territory, again, antithetical to the themes prevalent in these books. d&d’s #subversive #dark #unexpected ending was unironically the equivalent of:

do not want her ‘idealism’ to be completely robbed from her at any point either really. im not opposed to tragedy but i dont think id vibe with it being too cynical in this instance. this series is about earned romanticism. its heroes are the dreamers yada yada. it is about a dream of spring. i always thought she represented hope in some way. she is gonna be the flame during TLN, literally and metaphorically imo. i do think there are thematic and more abstract aspects to lightbringer, like yeah humanity uniting over an ideal for a better future & it can be about hope or whatever, which is why multiple characters have some kind of flaming sword foreshadowing, but a main one is gonna be dany and her dragons. like on top of all the pretty overt foreshadowing, like let us think about the logistics here, what is gonna do more damage to the others?? three magic nukes or some convenient dues ex machina magical flaming toothpick we forge out of murdering a woman? i also do not want to instantly write her off as a doomed martyr either though. i see the appeal in the tragedy of the kind girl who wanted a home dying without ever getting to live in the one she created but still leaving it for millions upon millions of people present and future… but also idk i am just not crazy about martyrdom as a trope unless it is executed very well. i like when characters survive for a cause rather than die for it. dany always kept persevering, not just for herself, but others: her children and her people, so i like when altruism is framed in that way. also i might be a little bitter if she is the only one to die from the new generation or whatever like in the show

X-Men Unabridged 1985: The Trials of Magneto and Cyclops

The X-Men, those litigious mutants that have sworn to protect a world that hates and fears them, are a cultural juggernaut with a long, tangled history. We’ve been untangling that history for a while, but sometimes, you really want a more in-depth look. Interested? Then read the (un)Abridged X-Men!

(X-Men 200 - 201) - by Chris Claremont, John Romita Jr., Dan Green and Rick Leonardi

“Ultra low power”? Fuck, Cyclops, you’re such a massive dork. (X-Men 201)

After a year of meandering storylines, Claremont kept two good plots in the chamber. Issue 200 is a big one that is meant to shake up the status quo, while issue 201 is a quiet baseball issue that then reasserts it again. One is a trial drama about the insidious nature of prejudice and how one person can be made to represent the whole group he is a part of, the other is Storm wiping the floor with a deadbeat baby daddy.

These issues are cool because they can basically be summarized as:

Magneto is right

Storm is cool 

But first, let’s reveal why you’d never want Loki to drive your Uber and drop you off at your home. 

I love that Wolverine, of all people, is worried about papers. Also, none of the X-Men carry some money in their suits? No hidden pouch with a few dollars, two ibuprofen and a fake passport? OMG is this what let to their pouch-craze in the nineties?! (X-Men 200)

This is a very unnecessary handwave for an unnecessary complication, because there’s absolutely no time-crunch or narrative reason for the X-Men to immediately appear in Paris, other than stupidly keeping Madelyne and Scott apart. Oh, Loki. Even making mischief on a narrative level! Maybe we can blame the looming Inferno on him, eh?

There’s a trial report in progress, spilling the t on Magneto’s arrest. A journalist explains which crimes Magneto stands trial for and in passing mentions how some people think he’s just as bad a Hitler. (Which I’ve always found to be a gross comparison, considering. Yes, Magneto is racist against humans and yes, that is his flaw, but the amount of terror he’s inflicted on the world barely scratches the surface of what Hitler has wrought. He’s barely been a dictator here, and that was only for one issue.) Anyway, because of undefined reasons, the International Court has moved from the Hague to Paris. I’m guessing Paris is a more picturesque battleground.

The trial report is being observed by two rich twins whose Aryan looks are surely a coincidence.

Amazingly, these two predate Jaime and Cersei Lannister by at least 7 years. (X-Men 200)

It’s the worst two twins in the Marvel Universe! When we met them before, they randomly put a bullet through Storm. The only thing I find unbelievable here is that someone as born-rich as Andreas would ever advocate for something as common as a guillotine. 

Meanwhile, a Soviet military installation is raided and, later, a German fighter jet is attacked. Both times, a message is left by the attackers: free magneto - the x-men. LeGasp!

To trim the cast a little, Charles shuttles the New Mutants off to Muir Isle, under the pretense that if something happens to the X-Men here, they’ll at the very least be safe. The X-Men remain in Paris, on guard, and the trial starts in one of the weirdest ways possible: with a motion to strike half of Magneto’s crimes from the record on account of being *checks notes* babified. 

A ship of Theseus-argument? In my courtroom? It’s more likely than you think. (X-Men 200)

Amazingly, the judge grants Gabrielle’s motion, and all my watching of The Good Wife hasn’t taught me how a real judge would respond to that motion. It does make me wonder how much more badass Alicia Florrick would be if she got to smoke in the court room. 

More interesting, however, is the crowd’s response to Gabrielle. When I was a  teenager reading this, the antisemitism seemed out of place and a little too cynical, but these days, I’m not so sure. Surely, in the Marvel Universe, there’s fora and reddits where people hate Magneto not because he’s a mutant, but because he’s Jewish.

I wonder how many people hate Wiccan and Hulkling and the 'wocification' of their superheroes. Why can't they just all be white right, like Captain America, or rich, like Iron Man?

Anyway, during recess, it becomes even more evident that this trial is bringing out all the crazies:

Misogyny, anti-mutant, xenophobic… This crowd hits it all! Good thing the good guys didn’t bring Storm. Or Iceman. (X-Men 200)

I always love how the women in Xavier’s life temper his idealism (and, eh, his trite bon mots) with cynical realism. Moira is not exactly a rose-colored glasses kind of lady, and neither is Gabrielle. I’d think she’s being a little harsh with her parents here – I don’t think anyone who died in Bergen-Belsen can be viewed as ‘lucky’ – but I’m not a camp survivor. Gabrielle gets to have all the complicated emotions about her parents she wants. 

Incidentally, I do feel more emboldened by Gabrielle’s call to arms (“don’t surrender”) than Xavier’s “nooo, that silly crowd doesn’t really mean it”.

Then, the narrative gives old Scott “till death or long distance do us part” Scummers the absolute flimsiest reason to stay in Paris, because ‘the X-Men’ attack a hospital in Magneto’s name. This time the real X-Men try and prevent it, but it is of no avail: they still end up being blamed.

On the other side of the world, Madelyne’s water breaks. Yes, she has to have her baby all on her own. Yes, Cyclops has been hanging around in Paris for like, a week, instead of jetting back home to support his wife. Yes, Cyclops is a terrible husband. Yes, that’s about to be really in character for him. 

ANYWAY! While a pro-mutant crowd is rallied outside the court house (a refreshing change), the prosecutors bring the sinking of the Russian Leningrad-submarine as evidence that Magneto is a criminal. (Back then, drowning Russians was more frowned upon.) Magneto, dramatic bitch that he is, uses this moment to claim the spotlight and the soapbox, and explains why he let himself get arrested in the first place:

If I’d been at that judges panel, I wouldn’t have heard a word of what the silver fox with the massive upper arms was saying. Naturallement. (X-Men 200)

While I love Magneto’s reason for putting himself on trial, I dig this mostly for character development reasons. Magneto finally finishes the noble turn he’s been working on for a while. In the sixties, he was a corny villain; in the seventies, a ruthless antagonist and finally, here, he’s become an idealistic anti-hero. Of course, I don’t think his ploy will work: Magneto has long been found guilty in the court of public opinion and the crowds there don’t really do penitence.

Speaking of the public! They’re under attack! A river boat filled with attackers in robo-suits spawns on the Seine, and soon, all the X-Men are involved in a pretty scenic if expensive tour of Paris.

Would’ve been hilarious if they had then used Colossus to ring the bells of the Notre Dame. Don’t worry about the window! A planetwide Kicktarter will fix that right up. (X-Men 200)

Cyclops is the only one who figures out that this would be the perfect moment for a distraction. And it is. The twins strike in the court room, making the already muddled trial a lot more complicated. They call themselves Fenris and they wish to have their revenge on Haller, Xavier and Lensherr, but they have absolutely no problem with killing any and all humans that get in their way.

Together with a fly-by Rachel, Magneto subdues the twins and stops the hateful racist prosecutor from beaning Andrea (the female twin) in the head with a rock. Good guy Magneto! Rachel then picks up a thought from the twins: Strucker. Magneto then quickly figures out that they are the offspring of Baron Von Strucker, a nazi that a young Xavier, Haller and Lensherr took down in Israel. Magneto even absconded with a giant cache of his gold!

But he can’t return to Earth, because Lilandra and the Starjammers are off in a distant corner of the universe, being pursued by Shi’ar hunters and zzz… Boring Shi’ar politics are only allowed when they barely figure into the plot and keep Xavier away from the main narrative, but that doesn’t mean I’ll actually pay attention.

If you’re wondering where Magneto is, well, the X-Men obviously have a hard time trusting him, so he’s down in the Danger Room, training the New Mutants. (Yo, X-Men, should the former villain really be training your teenage buddies unsupervised?) 

In fact, Magneto’s presence (and Xavier’s lack thereof) prompts Cyclops to tell Madelyne he can’t leave the X-Men! They need him! They need a leader! Storm? Storm can’t lead them, she doesn’t even have powers! Madelyne is basically all, are you that pathetic that you need the X-Men to need you? They’re having it out in a huge, loud fight and we’re all on Madelyne’s side. 

And then Storm, either annoyed that Cyclops called her useless or genuinely trying to help Scott move beyond his repression, interferes. 

I would be so fucking mad with Scott that we’d be having a make-it-or-break-it fight while he’s decked out in his fucking uniform. Madelyne, you’re a saint. (X-Men 201)

I love how Ororo plays this. She even gives him one last chance to back out, but alas. Cyclops doesn’t take it and Storm kicks his ass - even without her powers. One cool move is when she uses his own arm to block his eye beams. She wins the fight by stealing his visor, showing how sometimes having powers can be a liability. (It also doesn’t help that Scott is in emotional turmoil, but that’s kind of on him. Go raise your fucking baby, Scott.)

“Dude guess what?” Sara says suddenly with a gasp, “I have to take Intro to Philosophy.”

“I thought you got out of that?” Baela asked with a frown.

“Nope, you’ll tutor me, right Y/N?” Sara says, pouting, “Please please please!”

“We’ll see,” you tell her with a chuckle, “I don’t know if I’m the best tutor.”

“Egg passed!”

“That was special circumstances!” you argue, grabbing a table. 

Sara slumps into the seat across from you, Baela sits beside you and Rhaena squeezes behind Sara. 

“I’ll ask you again in the fall,” Sara says with a smirk, “You’ll be with Egg all loved up and will have to say yes.”

Just as she mentions his name, your phone buzzes. You glance at it, seeing Aegon calling you. You rise from your seat. 

“One sec,” you tell your friends and they roll their eyes. 

You can tell they don’t mean it though, they’re only teasing you. They were beyond happy for you and Aegon. You walk out of the dining hall before answering. 

“Hey you,” you say, unable to stop your smile, “You miss me already?”

You push through the glass door, the warm spring evening air washing over you. 

“You could say that,” Aegon says, and you can practically hear his grin through the phone.

You laugh, before glancing up and meeting a pair of violet eyes. 

It’s Aegon. 

You’re still holding your phone against your ear as Aegon hangs up, sliding his own phone into his pocket. And even though it’s been maybe 20 minutes since you’d last seen him, you throw yourself into his arms, kissing him ferociously. 

Aegon chuckles, lifting you off the ground and spinning in a circle.

“What are you doing here?” you manage through a giggle as he plants you back on the ground, “Your mom, you said-”

“I told her I had a final Monday,” Aegon says, grinning ear to ear, “My car’s still here, I’m driving down after.” 

He holds your hands in his, his thumbs caressing yours. 

“I was thinking maybe, you could come home with me? You know Helaena misses you and Daeron seemed to like you and Aemond is-” You cut him off with a kiss.

Aegon came back for you. He’s staying, for you.

From the beginning, Aegon’s always made it clear. Even when you didn’t understand. Even when you weren’t ready to admit it. Even when you were scared.

It’s always been you.

You pull away from him, smiling ear to ear. In the light of the setting sun, he’s so beautiful. And he’s all yours. And you’re his. 

“C’mon,” you tell him, grabbing his hand, “Sara is taking philosophy next term and needs pointers.”

Aegon groans, but a smile plays on his lips as you drag him back towards the dining hall. You all sit together in the dining hall, staying long after you finish eating; laughing, nearly crying, and just talking the entire time. The smile never leaves Aegon’s face.

He can’t help it, it’s the happiest he’s been in what feels like forever.

The Snow Queen fairytale as a motif used in GoT/ASOIAF

First of all, how many fairytales and myths can GRRM fit into this story, seriously?? I know many have written well thought and well informed meta of various fairytale motives fit with ASOIAF/GoT, and I am just here adding into an already huge pile, but it bothers me, okay. I have to get it out there into the tumblr void. And this is not really a well thought and well informed meta (I’m not a folklore/literature expert, not to mention European folklore/literature), I’m just pointing my fingers into the patterns I saw fit. Also, I can’t count myself as ASOIAF book reader, I just watch the show. What I know about the books, I read it here in tumblr. 

But anyway, you might be surprised as to which character I saw fit as The Snow Queen in GoT

It’s Daenerys Targaryen.

I know I know... whaat? The Mother of Dragons, Bride of Fire as The Snow Queen? Get out of here, right...

But it’s a pun. It’s not The Snow Queen, it’s Jon Snow’s Queen, get it? Remember how Jon repeatedly saying “you’re my queen” to Dany during season 8? Yeah. Oh and Jon is Kay, while Sansa is Gerda. 

What made me realize that Dany is The Snow Queen is when I was reading my son the fairytale. In the version retold by Kate Friend, it describes The Snow Queen as beautiful and terrible. And I was like, huh, just like Dany, especially with the white hair and the all white costume in season 8. 

Daenerys Targaryen, beautiful and terrible.

And then of course the story went on describing how Kay becomes her prisoner and then I was like, well that’s like Jon Snow during season 8 too.... And then in Disney’s adaptation Frozen, Elsa has white hair with purple eyeshadow, while Anna (Gerda) has....red hair....which is like... Sansa Stark. Then I also remember the illustration on my son’s book which is by John Patience, that reminded me of the Iron Throne.

So I went investigating, and shit... I mean obviously the sequencing was moved around, GRRM likes to subvert things, but my God!

Before we get into Jon Snow and his queen, I have to start with the other characters first. And I will be taking excerpt of the story from The Hans Christian Andersen Center website which I assume would be the most original one.

Gerda = Sansa Stark

Here is a description of Gerda’s power:  “No power that I could give could be as great as that which she already has. Don't you see how men and beasts are compelled to serve her, and how far she has come in the wide world since she started out in her naked feet? We mustn't tell her about this power. Strength lies in her heart, because she is such a sweet, innocent child.”

Furthermore, her connection with Kay are through roses (they have a window box full of roses) and a song that goes like this:  "Where roses bloom so sweetly in the vale, There shall you find the Christ Child, without fail." Another variation of the song is: “The rose in the valley has flowers so sweet, and angels come down there the children to greet.” She saved Kay with her prayers, hugs, kisses, tears and her song and their reunion literally ended winter and brings spring. If that’s not Sansa Stark (and the jonsa reunion), then I don’t know what is.

Gerda made a journey to the North to find Kay and bring him back together with her to their home. Sansa did not meant to make a journey North to find Jon and bring him back home, but this is what happened anyway. The story even stressed on the fact that when they came back to their homes, they were no longer children but grown ups. On her quest Gerda offered her red shoes to the river to get information about Kay’s whereabouts but the red shoes were given back to her the first time. But she did it once again and the river set her on the path to find Kay. I’m not really sure but for Sansa it could be her betrothal to Joffrey that was then canceled but then she got married to Tyrion Lannister. Her red shoes is her name and her claim to the North.

Gerda then met an old woman who wanted to keep her and made her forget about Kay by keeping all the roses underground. The old woman’s place was beautiful. Here is an excerpt:  “Then Gerda was led into the flower garden. How fragrant and lovely it was! Every known flower of every season was there in full bloom. No picture book was ever so pretty and gay. Gerda jumped for joy, and played in the garden until the sun went down behind the tall cherry trees. Then she was tucked into a beautiful bed, under a red silk coverlet quilted with blue violets. There she slept, and there she dreamed as gloriously as any queen on her wedding day.” But then she saw a rose on the old woman’s hat and finally remembers her purpose of finding Kay. I would say that the old woman is Cersei Lannister who tried to make Sansa forget about her home and her innocence. Sansa was also saved from her clutch by roses (The Tyrells).

Then Gerda with information from a crow, met a Princess and Prince. She thought that the Prince might be Kay, but it turns out he was not. This might be Sansa’s vale arc and the Prince is either Petyr Baelish or Harry Hardyng. The Prince and Princess also gave provisions for Gerda’s journey to the North, so this may be that the KoTV helps Sansa getting Winterfell back. The crow, has a ladylove, another crow and they finally get married and live in the Princess’s castle though unfortunately the crow then died. The crow was a wild forest crow while his ladylove is a tame crow. These two crows could be genderbent into Sam Tarly and Gilly. Remember that Sam is mock as Jon’s ladylove by Alliser Thorne?

Next Gerda met a robber girl who sleeps with a knife and have plenty of pigeons. Yep, of course that is very much like Arya Stark (who sometimes is being referred to as “a girl”)

The pigeons told Gerda about Kay and The Snow Queen. The robber girl finally gave Gerda her reindeer called Bae for her journey to the North. The girl likes to tickle the reindeer’s neck with her knife. At the end of the story it is told that the robber girl then decided to leave her place and find adventure in the world. Very much like Arya’s ending.

Now about that reindeer Bae who helped Gerda to reach to Kay in The Snow Queen’s palace in the far North. In ASOIAF/GoT, we can connect Bae to Baelish. Make sense. Petyr Baelish helps Sansa get to North and Arya’s knife did end up in his neck. But also we can connect it to two foreshadowing of Sansa bearing Jon’s child. The first is more well-known: Bael the Bard. The second one I think is more hidden and I made a post about it quite long ago: Baelor. Is this far fetched? Maybe, but I’ll take it.

Kay = Jon (+ The Night King)

Kay and Gerda are neighbours and they share a garden (particularly a flower box full of roses). Their relationship, in the words of Hans Christian Andersen himself are: “These children were not brother and sister, but they loved each other just as much as if they had been.” So they are NOT brother and sister but love each other as such. While Jon and Sansa are also NOT brother and sister but was raised as such.

Then Kay got splinters of magic mirror stuck to his eyes and his heart. The mirror “made everything great and good that was reflected in it appear small and ugly, but which magnified all evil things until each blemish loomed large”. It made Kay hated all the roses, they look ugly now to his eyes and also made Kay loved the snow and the cold. Jon Snow at the beginning of the story was a cynical little boy because he was raised as a bastard. He wanted to leave Winterfell and sneered at the idea of having a family of his own because he felt that he can’t have them. So he went to the coldest place there is.

In the story, Kay plays with his sled, and then The Snow Queen came with her sled and Kay hooked his sled to hers. The Snow Queen first, covers Kay in a bearskin rug and gave Kay kisses. The first kiss “was colder than ice. He felt it right down to his heart, half of which was already an icy lump. He felt as if he were dying, but only for a moment. Then he felt quite comfortable, and no longer noticed the cold”. The second kiss makes Kay forgets about Gerda and their homes. The third kiss, The Snow Queen does not give him because it would be the kiss of death.

I argue that GRRM subvert this story. I think Jon Snow was already saved by Sansa before he met Dany. The splinters in his eyes and heart was already gone when he faced The Snow Queen. The reunion happened before he met Dany. The first two kisses also already happened: Jon Snow had died and came alive again, and he also forced to forget about his home and family while he was at the Night’s Watch. The bearskin rug which The Snow Queen used to cover Kay can allude to Jeor Mormont and/or Longclaw. 

Then Jon Snow met his queen finally, but instead of a hooking sleds.... it’s dragons. Jon Snow’s sled was his dragon Rhaegal which are hooked to Dany’s sled Drogon. But his eyes wasn’t blinded by the splinter and his heart were already warm. He knowingly and willingly follow the dragon to save his family.

And the third kiss of death that wasn’t given by The Snow Queen? Jon Snow will give it to his queen instead.

Now let’s go back a little bit. Kay was also given a puzzle from ice by The Snow Queen, and if he can solve it then he is free. He was supposed to spell the word “eternity” but he couldn’t figure it out with the shard in his eyes and heart. In GoT we know exactly who has got an shard in his heart.

The Night King. And so that is why he plays with puzzle in ice. He is struggling to form the one symbol that would set him free.

Bonuses

Other than those patterns, there are several interesting tidbits from the story that fits with ASOIAF. There is this one blog said that The Snow Queen story was inspired by another story called “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” which if you read it, it is essentially “The Bear and the Maiden Fair” (the bear is a white bear, by the way)

More bonuses here. When Gerda finally remembers to find Kay during her time in the old woman’s home because of the rose, different flowers gave her different stories even though none tells her about Kay.

This is the story from tiger lily:

"Do you hear the drum? Boom, boom! It was only two notes, always boom, boom! Hear the women wail. Hear the priests chant. The Hindoo woman in her long red robe stands on the funeral pyre. The flames rise around her and her dead husband, but the Hindoo woman is thinking of that living man in the crowd around them. She is thinking of him whose eyes are burning hotter than the flames-of him whose fiery glances have pierced her heart more deeply than these flames that soon will burn her body to ashes. Can the flame of the heart die in the flame of the funeral pyre?"

So GRRM didn’t take the sati ritual for Dany’s rites of passage as mother of dragons from just anywhere, but it is from this story.

Also, hear this story from hyacinth

"There were three sisters, quite transparent and very fair. One wore a red dress, the second wore a blue one, and the third went all in white. Hand in hand they danced in the clear moonlight, beside a calm lake. They were not elfin folk. They were human beings. The air was sweet, and the sisters disappeared into the forest. The fragrance of the air grew sweeter. Three coffins, in which lie the three sisters, glide out of the forest and across the lake. The fireflies hover about them like little flickering lights. Are the dancing sisters sleeping or are they dead? The fragrance of the flowers says they are dead, and the evening bell tolls for their funeral."

Of course this immediately bring to memory the quote of Jon Snow with Val: “The light of the half-moon turned Val’s honey-blond hair a pale silver and left her cheeks as white as snow. She took a deep breath. “The air tastes sweet.”” Well then, according to Hans Christian Andersen, that means death. There are three sisters here which could allude to the three queens at the almost end of GoT: Cersei Lannister (red), Sansa Stark (blue) and Daenerys Targaryen (white).

So those are my stab at it. I would be interested to hear if anyone’s take on it.

“There is no right side to this.” Ned spoke, rubbing his face with both hands. Well, his statement was not entirely true. There was a right side, but it felt wrong. Especially because the lives of children hang in the balance. Robert’s fury would be terrible once he knew his suspicions. And about John Arryn’s death.

"No, there is no right side to their behavior." Catelyn said and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, “And what shall you do, Ned? There is no avoiding this.”

No, Ned knew that there was not a way to avoid what was coming. He felt tired and old. Older than his actual age. And haunted, the could clearly hear the voice of his sister speaking from beyond, those words she had once spoken when her betrothal to Robert had been formalized, she had been so sure of herself then, and time had proven her right. Robert would have never kept to her bed, yes, Lyanna did not have the temper that Queen Cersei did, but she had not been someone you could mistreat and not expect something back.

“Sansa’s betrothal must be broken. Immediately.” Ned spoke at last. “And I want you to take them, I will bring them to you, and I will provide for you to take a ship, straight to White Harbor, so the three of you can be safe.”

“I understand,” Catelyn spoke, “and what about you?”

What about him indeed. Ned knew that he had to tread with care, he could ill afford a misstep. But could he avoid them, when everywhere he look, he found enemies. Or people who were not trustworthy. “I will write again to Stannis. He ought to be here, as soon as possible. I should speak with Cersei, give her time to run, but not before our daughters and you are gone. I will not risk the three of you.”

“You think she would harm us?”

Yes. The woman’s pride and life hang in the balance, alongside the lives of her children. The Kingslayer was gone, but that did not lessen his worry. “I do not know what to think,” Ned admitted. “All I know is, she will be in danger and I cannot predict or guess how she will react. My hope is that she will flee, take her children and leave, but I cannot be sure of it. She enjoys Queenship too much.”

Ned stood abruptly, a fit of sudden anger coursing through him. “Damnable woman, of all the things she could have done, did she had to play with the lives of children?”

Catelyn said nothing for a long moment as she watched her husband pace around the room. “What other way could she have taken her revenge, Ned,” she said softly. “King Robert, by your own admission, has not been a good husband.”

Ned turned, “But children, Cat.”

“I will not presume to know Queen Cersei’s mind, but as you have witnessed yourself, the Lannisters all but control King’s Landing. It is a Lannister court, not a Baratheon one. This is just her – I suppose -  starting her own dynasty.”

“I hate this,” Ned said, “I hate everything about this. But I must do, what I must. Robert is still my friend, and King. I will give her a chance to run, I pray the Old Gods she takes it.”

Catelyn frowned, doubting her husband’s hope, “I hope she does, the children are not at fault. I will wait here, then, for our daughters and we will leave. And I pray to the Old Gods and the New, that Stannis comes. You should not do this alone.”

Ned nodded sharply. “I will arrange for the three of you to leave soon, as soon as possible. Danger lurks all around us. I want the girls and yourself safe and away when everything happens.”

Catelyn stood, walked towards Ned and cupped his face with her hands, “Just promise me that you will be careful, Ned, I will wait for you.”

Ned covered his wife’s hands with his. “I will be as careful as I can, I promise you Cat.” And he knew that he had to be, and find a way to keep this other promise. For his family.
