On the next morning, Algy had an unusually bright idea. If the post bird could deliver his book to him in the forest, then the post bird could also take it away for him, for it was too heavy for him to carry in addition to his magic pumpkin lantern, and he was loath to leave it behind to rot.
But even more importantly, Algy suddenly realised that the post bird must know the way back to his home, for it had to know the entire area by heart in order to make its deliveries, and all the creatures knew that it rarely if ever went astray.
Greatly heartened by this thought, Algy made his way out of the dense growth of the forest – albeit with some difficulty as he had to carry both book and pumpkin and was therefore unable to fly – and settled down at the base of a gnarled old tree to wait until the post bird should happen to pass by.
Algy had no idea how long he would have to wait, however, so he tried to relax, despite the cold, damp sensation that was bothering his tail feathers, and passed the time by attempting to recall poems he had read on the subject of waiting. He could hardly say that he felt serene… If truth be told, he felt cold, damp, impatient, and rather anxious, as he didn't know whether his plan would actually work out. But as he liked the poem he had remembered, he recited it quietly to himself, alone in the snow, for there was not another living soul in sight to hear it…
Serene, I fold my hands and wait, Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea; I rave no more ‘gainst time or fate, For lo! my own shall come to me. I stay my haste, I make delays, For what avails this eager pace? I stand amid the eternal ways, And what is mine shall know my face. Asleep, awake, by night or day, The friends I seek are seeking me; No wind can drive my bark astray Nor change the tide of destiny. What matter if I stand alone? I wait with joy the coming years; My heart shall reap where it has sown, And garner up its fruit of tears. The law of love binds every heart And knits it to its utmost kin, Nor can our lives flow long apart From souls our secret souls would win. The stars come nightly to the sky, The tidal wave comes to the sea; Nor time, nor space, nor deep, nor high Can keep my own away from me.
[Algy is reciting the poem Waiting by the 19th/early 20th century American naturalist and writer John Burroughs.]
