Off the grid
I’ll be at deer camp in northern Michigan for the next couple of days - in the bush and off the grid.
Meanwhile, as always, I’ll leave you with the immortal words of John Madson, who nails deer camp pretty well:
PALACE IN THE POPPLE
By John Madson
It’s a smoky, raunchy boars’ nest
With an unswept, drafty floor
And pillow ticking curtains
And knife scars on the door.
The smell of pine-knot fire
From a stovepipe that’s come loose
Mingles sweetly with the boot grease
And the Copenhagen snoose.
There are work-worn .30-.30s
With battered, steel-shod stocks,
And drying lines of long johns
And of steaming, pungent socks.
There’s a table for the Bloody Four
And their games of two-card draw,
And there’s deep and dreamless sleeping
On bunk ticks stuffed with straw.
Jerry and Jake stand by the stove,
Their gun-talk loud and hot,
And Bogie has drawn a pair of kings,
And is raking in the pot.
Franks’ been drafted again as cook
And is peeling some spuds for stew
While Bruce wanders by in baggy drawers
Reciting “Dan McGrew”.
No where on Earth is fire so warm
Nor coffee so infernal,
Nor whiskers so stiff, jokes so rich,
Nor hope blooming so eternal.
A man can live for a solid week
In the same old under-britches
And walk like a man and spit when he wants
And scratch himself where he itches.
I tell you, boys, there’s no place else
Where I’d rather be, come fall,
Where I eat like a bear and sing like a wolf
And feel like I’m bull-pine tall.
In that raunchy cabin out in the bush
In the land of the raven and loon,
With a tracking snow lying new to the ground
At the end of the rutting moon.

"Loggers' Arbitration: COURT TO HEAR C. C. F. POLICY," The Province (Vancouver). February 15, 1942. Page 2. ---- Documents setting forth the C. C. F. policy on "the democratic control of industry" and the Progressive Conservative party's policy dealing with collective bargaining, were entered as exhibits this morning at sittings of the arbitration board enquiring into the dispute between logging companies of the Queen Charlotte Islands and their employees.
When John Stanton, counsel for the International Woodworkers of America, which seeks union recognition, placed the documents before the board, Judge A. M. Harper, chairman, asked: "What about the Liberal party?"
This query brought smiles throughout the room, with the exception of Mr. Stanton, who replied: "I don't know about the Liberal party; the policy seems to be in a condition of flux."
(At the Saturday sittings, Mr. Stanton said that he wished also to enter a document showing the policy of the United Church of Canada, on labor relations.)
SEES DISCRIMINATION. When the session opened, Nels Madson, chairman of an I. W. A. local in the Queen Charlotte Islands, took the stand. He said that he had been employed as a chokerman for Pacific Mills and had been let out in December, and the reason given was shortage of work. He said that he had tried to get his job back, but the company employment office suggested he go to another camp for work.
Under examination by Mr. Stanton, he said that the union had tried to get him reinstated, and that he wanted to return o the camp where he had worked lats year.
Mr. Stanton suggested to the board that the matter of the company letting Madson go was a clear case of discrimination, and counsel asked that the board take action under the act.

Congratulations Eve! You’ve been accepted as your first choice of Kiara Carrera (Madison Bailey)! Please send in the account within the next 24 hours!

↳ Age: 20
↳ Activity: Already know
↳ Timezone: EST
✖ ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER
↳ Celebrity Desired: Madson Bailey
↳ Second Celebrity: N/A
↳ Character’s Name: Kiara Careera (Cannon character from Outer Banks)
↳ Birthday & Age:  May 13, 2003, 20 years old
↳ Education: Graduated from Kildare County High School
↳ Background: Kiara is the only child of Mike and Anna Carrera. Her mother Anna was born into money and is from Figure Eight, while her father Mike rose from a less privileged Pogue background to start a very successful local restaurant called The Wreck (where Kie works for her parents). Anna’s pregnancy by Mike was unplanned and out of wedlock, which initially jeopardized Anna’s financial and social standing - as a result, Anna is extremely protective of Kie and apprehensive about her friendship with the Pogue boys. However, she and Mike happily married and built a very stable, well-off household for Kie with the best possible opportunities, including moving to the Figure Eight and enrolling Kie in the same school all the Kooks went to.The transition to life and school in the Figure Eight was very hard for Kie; she had trouble connecting with her peers, making friends, etc. However, when she met Sarah Cameron, they struck up a friendship and Kie began to find the acceptance that had eluded her up until that point. Kiara and Sarah were best friends in the Ninth Grade, to the point that Kie neglected her friendship with Pogue boys John B, JJ, and Pope. However, she and Sarah became enemies in the Tenth Grade when Sarah snubbed Kie on the invite list of one of her parties, then spread a rumor that Kie was the reason the party was broken up by police. After having fallen out with Sarah, Kiara reconnected with the Pogues. Shortly after John B involves Sarah in their hunt for the Royal Merchant gold, the rest of the Pogues strand them on a boat together to work out their differences - Sarah comes to an epiphany and apologizes, telling Kie “When people get close to me, I feel trapped, and I bail, and then I blame them for it. I’m really sorry, and I miss you.”Kiara gets into shenanigans with the Pogues. She helps them on their adventure to find the gold from the Royal Merchant ship wreck.Kiara flirts with John B and kisses him on the cheek at one point. Later on in the season he kisses her, thinking she likes him, but she doesn’t kiss him back and turns him down. Kiara sometimes works at her father’s restaurant, but most days is out on the boat or hanging out with The Pogues. At the end of Season 1, Kiara helps John B escape from the police and leave on a boat. They hear that the boat got caught up in the storm and probably didn’t make it, so she and the others mourn John B thinking he died.Kie, JJ, and Pope carve a heart on a tree in honor of John B, who they assume died in the storm. John B and Sarah are, unbeknownst to them, hiding aboard a boat bound for Nassau, Bahamas. Pope and Kie, naturally outraged, spray “murderer” on Ward’s estate walls. Kie even calls out Rafe as a cop killer too.Meanwhile, she, Pope, and JJ return to school, attempting to avoid the suspicious stares from all in attendance. John B sends the group a photo to certify their survival.Kiara and the Pogues are getting by on the deserted island. They see a plane and flag down the pilot- thinking they are going to be rescued. However, the pilot was not who he said he was and tried to kidnap the group. The Pogues manage to get away but Kiara gets taken by the pilot.Kiara is convinced Sarah’s dad is behind her kidnapping. She gets taken to Vaux Hall and realizes her kidnapper is someone else- Carlos Singh. Carlos tells her he is looking for the gold at El Dorado. Kiara tries to make Carlos let her leave Vaux Hall by convincing him she can find the journal. He doesn’t trust her though so he doesn’t let her go.Kiara and Rafe have to team up together to break out when Carlos’ men are distracted. They make it to Rafe’s boat and he offers her a ride back to the Outer Banks. She wants to go back to the Pogues though and he won’t take her so she ends up stealing his boat. She sends them a text and signs it P4L so they know it’s her. They finally reunite.Kiara goes back to the Outer Banks with the Pogues. She is happy to be back with her parents. The Pogues try to find their way to South America to rescue Big John. Kiara’s parents are not happy and decide to force her to go to a wilderness camp called Kitty Hawk. JJ breaks her out. They kiss. Kiara and JJ meet with Barracuda Mike because they made a deal - to give him part of their El Dorado treasure if he gets them secure transportation to South America.JJ and Kiara get to South America with Barracuda Mike. They reunite with the rest of the Pogues. They find the treasure and are thrilled. In a flash forward, Kiara is seen working saving turtles. An old man approaches the Pogues complimenting their discovery of El Dorado. He has a proposition for them- help him find Blackbeard’s treasure. Kiara is a very loyal and caring friend. She often feels torn between the Pogues and her parents, who dislike the boys because they are poor and bad influence. Even though she is one of the more responsible people in the Pogues and usually shoots down JJ’s ideas for a better, safe plan, Kiara seems to like the dangers of their adventure.Kiara is determined and stubborn and doesn’t like her parents’ ideals, which is why she chooses the Pogues over them.

Cemetery prairies are remnants of native North American prairie that survive on land set aside by settlers as burial grounds. These places were thus left unplowed and largely undisturbed (natural prairie grasses are often perennial species that regrow from the roots after ruminant grazing or grassfire; plowing destroys the root system and eventually the ecosystem), such that the cemeteries became de facto nature preserves.[1]
Native prairie is now vanishingly rare, so any surviving patches are considered precious. According to prairie researcher John Madson in 1974, "Most surviving tallgrass prairie preserves are relatively small. In Iowa or Illinois, as much as a square mile of virgin tallgrass prairie would be a huge and immensely valuable tract."[2] Iowa is estimated to have 200 to 300 relic cemetery prairies[3] totaling about 1,000 acres (400 ha; 1.6 sq mi; 4.0 km2),[4] which is thought to be less than 0.1 percent of the state's original native grassland.[5] Missouri has approximately 60,000 acres (24,000 ha; 94 sq mi; 240 km2) of original prairie, which is a larger absolute area but nonetheless still less than 0.5 percent of the prairie extent pre-settlement.[6] Only about 2,300 acres (930 ha; 3.6 sq mi; 9.3 km2)[7] of original prairie are left in Illinois, the Prairie State.[8] Fifty of those Illinois acres are found within 29 historic cemeteries.[7] In addition to cemetery prairies, other remnants of original prairie persisted on sand ridges and rocky hillsides unsuitable for agriculture, and along railroad rights-of-way.[9]
Remnant cemetery prairies are valuable control groups or points of comparison for scientific studies of degraded or restored grasslands.[9][10] The genetic material preserved in these remnants[11] can be drawn upon for larger ecological restorations.[12] Scientists also use cemeteries, generally, to measure topsoil erosion.[13] One cemetery prairie in Plainview, Illinois stands at least 1 ft (30 cm) above the surrounding cornfield, illustrating the difference in soil retention rates of perennial versus cultivated annual vegetation.[9]
Some cemetery prairies have been abandoned over time, and some remain active community burial grounds. In both circumstances, maintenance, management and local politics are often ongoing challenges to preservation.[5][14][15] Similarly, roads and paths that once led to the cemeteries may have disappeared over time, which simultaneously proffers a measure of security through obscurity and as a practical matter somewhat hinders preservation efforts.

Way out there
I'll be at our northern Michigan deer camp for the next few days. There's no WI-FI way out in the bush, so you won't hear from me for a little while.
I won't actually hunt up there; I already have a freezer full of venison and expect to participate in the muzzleloader season in December. At camp, I'll recharge my blog batteries and maybe come back with a tale or two to tell you.
Meanwhile, as always, I’ll leave you to ponder the immortal words of John Madson, who nails deer camp pretty well:

From Nate’s Perspective
We moved into the hotel last week.  It's nicer than I expected it to be.  Even though Kat and I have to share a room, it's not really that different from the apartment.  John gave us a suite, so we have a living space and almost a whole kitchen.  Neither of us cook anyway, so it barely makes a difference.
"As long as there's a microwave, I'm good," she said as soon as she saw the place, and while I wish I could disagree, I don't really.
Otherwise, the suite is nice.  All grays and whites.  The opposite of the way I think of John.
But the more I see, the more I think John the landlord and John the owner of a well-known hotel are two completely different people.  In the apartment, everything was brown and green.  Even the light had an earthy quality. Not here.
Kat is thrilled to be here. She's acting like we won the lottery. But I confess, I feel -- uncomfortable here. I miss the dark, close corners of home. This place feels transient. I mean, it's meant to, right? You're not supposed to get too attached to a hotel.  It would probably be a problem if you did.
There are too many people at the hotel too. Home is a place for few people. I had thought that if John was moving us in, it must mean the place was more or less empty. It's not exactly peak tourist season. But maybe I underestimated his generosity, or how much it would cost to out us up somewhere else. Because the place is, not full exactly, but far from empty. I can't go anywhere without running into someone, or somebody stopping me to ask if I know where the nearest restaurant or coffee shop is. For some reason I've been spotted as a local. I seem to be universally recognized. I don't know why. No one seems to suspect Kat of secretly belonging here.
I'm sure that's just racism, now that I think of it. But still.
The suite itself is nicer than I think either of us let ourselves hope for. We each have our own area, but they aren't exactly two separate rooms.  There's no door in-between. The only doors are from the suite to the hallway, and then the one on the bathroom. Still, even that isn't so different from our apartment, where Kat always keeps her door open anyway. Square-footage aside, the space at the hotel is so much more functional than our apartment was that it almost feels bigger.
Still, though. I'll be excited to go back. Whenever that ends up being.
The one thing I like better about being at the hotel is our proximity to everything. From the apartment, I would have to take the bus into work every day. Now I can walk, and it's easy to get anywhere I could want to go. I'm enjoying having the freedom my body is enough to give me here.  Because of this, I know I'll be out a lot. Since yesterday, though I we've mostly been moving in, so we've been in and out of the hotel a lot.
This has given us ample opportunity to get to know some of John's patrons.
There's Mrs. Madson, who seems to be the sole occupant of the top floor -- that's the fourth floor -- for the moment. And I don't wonder why.
If I had the choice, I would make sure she had a whole floor to herself as well.  She's perfectly nice, but everywhere she goes, a cloud of overpowering rose scent follows her, and she wants to do nothing but tell everyone she comes across all about her cats.  As far as I know, the cats are back home -- wherever home is for her -- or they're long gone.  Then again, I wouldn't put it past her to have smuggled them into the hotel somehow.  That might explain why everyone else avoids the fourth floor as though it were quarantined for plague.
Then there's Bud Horroway.  I have no idea where he's from.  I can't get a good read on him at all.  Kat thinks he's just a sweet old man -- a southern gentleman, she says -- but I don't know.  I think he's hiding something.  He told me yesterday, when he was helping me carry a box of Kat's books up to our suite (Kat didn't help because she says carrying heavy things is clearly men's work, under the patriarchy, and she may as well get use out of the patriarchy when she can) that he's been here for six weeks now.
Who lives in a hotel for six weeks?  The list according to Kat: people who recently lost everything in a fire, old men who don't know how to live alone after their wives have died, disadvantaged elderly who have been bamboozled by their young relatives.  I'm not sure that this last makes much sense, but I don't typically argue with Kat unless I have to.
I did point out that someone with something to hide might live in a hotel for six weeks.  She just laughed and said, "You always look for the worst possible answer, Nathan.  Besides, by the time we have to go home, we'll have been there for at least that long."
I realized she was right as soon as she said it, but I hadn't thought at all about how long we'll probably have to stay at the hotel.
My favorite person I've met so far is a woman on the third floor, an artist.  She told us she's here because she's working on a project based around Portland.  She spends every day wandering around town, sketching different buildings she sees.  Then she comes back to the hotel, which she's treating as a sort of studio, and she sculpts the buildings, using her sketches as her medium.  Apparently she got some kind of grant for the project, which is how she's paying for the hotel.
We haven't seen anyone here our own age.  There's one family with young children.  Emma, the artist, is forty-five.  But most people here are older.  A hotel full of baby boomers.  And Kat is thrilled to be here.  She doesn't even mind that everyone who sees us together assumes we're on a honeymoon.  I laughed the first time someone asked us.  I figured they must be joking.  But they just stared at me until Kat explained.
Kat has conspiracy theories about almost everyone who’s staying here, but the longer they’re staying, the more she side-eyes them.  I think she’s doing this mostly for my benefit, to make me laugh, and to tease me, which she doesn’t know I know.
She’s come up with some stories that are pretty outrageous – it’s a little impressive, though I would never make the mistake of telling her so.
Her favorite theories are about the hotel guests who I like the best.  The artist who makes sculptures of the buildings in town is secretly a Russian spy.  The man who camps out at the continental breakfast every morning, eating room temperature pancakes with cold butter and no maple syrup, tells jokes because he’s trying to lull us into a false sense of security, so that when he shows up to our rooms later, we’ll let him in without a care, and be murdered and robbed without any sign of a break-in or struggle.
I told her she has a morbid sense of humor, but she said I was a pot and she a kettle, and then she went on anyway.
I know she’s ay I’m just proving her point if I said what I’m about to write out loud, but the thing is – while Kat’s conspiracy theories are intentionally extreme – there does something to be something a little strange about this hotel.
Maybe I’m wrong and I’m just not used to being around so many rich people (or any rich people, unless you count John) but I don’t know.  It’s not that anything seems to be happening, exactly.  I’m not saying I secretly believe that there’s truth to Kat’s jokes.
It’s more that everyone here acts like only one piece of themselves is allowed out of their hotel room, like only a fraction of each of us is free to step over the threshold of our suite and wander the halls.  Like we’re all staying here as a way to hide ourselves.
Kat would tell me I’m projecting, and maybe I am, but I can’t get this feeling to let go of me – the feeling that I’m walking around with half a face, and everyone else is too.
I don't think about this in vulnerable moments, but in those times when I myself am in the in-between spaces -- the hallways on my way out, or at the breakfast tables.  Something about the nature of the place has me feeling like everything I do here is only half real.  It isn't mine, this place.  A hotel isn't anyone's, in a way.  And yet, I live here, so I feel a sense of entitlement over it in a way I've never felt before.
Yesterday I stole a pen from the front desk when Stacie, the hotel manager who usually stands there for hours at a time, was somewhere else.  And it felt so natural that I did it again today.
I know, I know -- they're just pens, right?  Printed with the name of the hotel along the side and everything, so you know they probably want people to take them.  It's not a big deal, I get that.  But the fact that I felt the urge to do it at all, and that I acted on it, demonstrates that being here is affecting me.  I'm not talking about crazy stuff.  Just that, maybe my surroundings affect me more than I think they do.  Maybe what home determines who we are, and not the other way around.
The last couple of days, I've started watching the other guests -- tenants? -- more closely.  Not stalking them or anything.  Nothing creepy.  Just, in moments when we're all around each other but everyone expects everyone else to be too self-absorbed to pay attention, I pay attention.  I don't think I really thought I would notice anything, but I have.  The pens, for one thing.  Not one of us seems to be capable of resisting the pens.  But it's other things too.  People take things, little things -- bagels at breakfast, knickknacks left on decorative tabletops -- just slip them into their pockets like none of it will ever be missed.
Everyone does it.  I even saw Kat do it once.  It wasn't a pen from the front desk either.  I saw her take a movie ticket from a coffee table in the lobby.  There were four, a family's.  She didn't take all of them, only one, and it struck me because, I mean, it's almost worse, right?  That she only took one.  So when the family goes to their movie, they probably won't even realize they're missing a ticket until they get there.  Still not a big deal really.  Anyone who can afford to stay at this hotel for real can afford to buy an extra ticket at the Nick.  But still, I've never seen her do anything like that before.
She didn't know that I saw her take it.  Later that day, I asked her what she did all afternoon, and she told me she went to see the new James Bond movie by herself.  I asked why she didn't invite me and she just shrugged it off.  "I felt like going alone," she said, but she's never gone to the movies alone before.
But is it this place?  Is it doing something to all of us?  Or is it just that being in a place like this lets us all behave the way we normally would anyway, if we had nothing to stop us?  Maybe that's why Kat keeps coming up with these conspiracy theories, because she's noticed too.  I don't know.  We haven't talked about it.
Normally we talk about everything.  Sharing the same one-bedroom apartment for three years kind of leaves you with limited boundaries.  It's like having two separate spaces all of a sudden has made us truly two separate people for the first time in a long time.  I'm not sure how I feel about it.  In some ways, it's nice to, I don't know, feel like more of my own person.  On the other hand, I sort of miss Kat, and I wish she would tell me about things like stealing movie tickets from children.  I mean, really, what is up with that?
Maybe I'll find out.  God knows we're stuck here -- get to be here? -- for a while.  If Kat gets her way, it will be months before we can go home.  Maybe it's my way too.  Maybe that's what I really want.  Maybe if we stay long enough, I'll find out.

Patrick Fabian
Article by Ricky Tavi
Patrick Fabian is likely one of those actors who seems to have been in so many movies we’ve seen so many TV shows we’ve watched and so many adverts we’ve listened to. And yet because his performances and characters are so diverse and convincing, it just hasn’t seemed necessary to remember his real name.
But Patrick Fabian may not be able to avoid the personality spotlight too much longer. As the season of his current CMT sitcom, ‘Working Class’ just ended, he’s looking at another critically acclaimed success to add to his nearly 20 year acting resume.
Patrick spent some time with us and allowed us to discover something of the real life personality behind the brilliant list of stage and screen characters that this fine actor has so often brought to life.
Our interview reveals a man of humor and humility. He gives us a glimpse of his Working Class co-star Ed Asner - is he easy to work with? – And, with a big smile, drops a hint about the most famous screen character he’d welcome the chance to portray. Read on to discover the fascinating background to one of Hollywood’s better kept secrets – Patrick Fabian.
In your 18 year acting career you have appeared in just about every performance medium possible – stage, movies, TV, voice-over, adverts…..the list seems endless. So starting with the most recent, and where today’s buzz is, please divulge something about the new CMT series, ‘Working Class’.
This has been a great experience and a ton of fun to do. It's a smart, funny sitcom that'll get the whole family laughing; it's a real traditional show in the vein of "Roseanne" & "Everybody Loves Raymond". If you haven't tuned in, now's the chance to see what all the fun's about.  And there's gonna be some kissin'!
Do you think you were an easy choice to portray your character?
Well, I run Parker Foods and am the boss of Melissa Peterman and Ed Asner's characters, so clearly, someone in casting thought I knew how to order people around! That, and wear Armani well. I think I can bring a bit of humor and good nature to the usual traits that bosses possess.
I read somewhere that you are happy to be thought of as a ‘working class actor’. If so, are you bringing ‘real life’ to your part – albeit the show is not intended to be taken too seriously?
The show is meant to make people laugh, we're not solving the world's problems, you know? And being a working class actor, for me, means that I get to do a wide variety of roles and situations, and that I'm fortunate enough to work fairly consistently. Although, let's be clear; if you need me to be a Star, I'm open to that.
Ed Asner, one of your co-stars in ‘Working Class’, is known for his real life advocacy of the ‘common man’. What special energy do you think his outlook on life has brought to the show?
Ed's a man of his word and certainly backs up his beliefs with his actions and I respect him for that. His acting experience and skills are totally fun to work with and I've learned a lot from watching him. He's not afraid to fail in life or work.
Comments from your colleagues in the show talk of the fun and good humor that has made the production work such a pleasant experience. With so many seasoned actors are you all able to stick to the script? Is ad libbing allowed?
I can easily say it's been one of the easiest sets to work on; we laughed all the time. And that tone is set by Melissa Peterman; she's a shining light and considering the crazy schedule we were on, that's no small feat. And Melissa comes from improv, so she's wonderful on her feet and can ad-lib all day long. The writers' wrote us great material and they weren't averse to our going off the rails: we were all looking for the funny.
As an actor you’ve portrayed the deadly serious to the comic. How do you classify yourself primarily – if you do?
I think it's all about the point of view you bring to any particular role, and how that fits into the whole, you know? I'm fortunate to work in both serious and comic worlds and I like it like that. However, if James Bond ever opens up..........
Where do you have the most fun? In theater or movies?
They all have their charms, (and frustrations), but I definitely have a soft spot for live theatre; it's where I learned my craft and the immediacy of a play and it's interaction with an audience can't be beat.
All reports are that you have a great sense of humor. Could you ever imagine yourself as a stand-up comedian? Ever tried it?
I have way too much respect for stand-up to try it. I need writers. Wildly, talented writers making me look good. Daily.
As a serious actor, has Shakespeare featured much in your stage experience?
I got my Equity Card at the Shakespeare L.A. Festival years ago playing Moth in "Love's Labor's Lost". Shakespeare under the stars at the John Anson Ford Theatre in the summertime. A wonderful experience and I would kill to be at the Festival in New York City's Central Park.
Ever played Hamlet? Would you want to?
No I haven't. And yes, given the opportunity, I think every male actor would love a crack at it.
Your career has given you the opportunity for a lot of travel. Much time away from home. Now that you are a parent – congratulations, by the way, to you and your wife, Mandy Steckelberg, on the birth of your daughter Abbey Ray – will you be earning fewer frequent flyer miles?
Well, they say have a baby and the world will provide (or something like that) and so far, that has been the case, although most jobs have kept me local. I thought it would be great to get a series in New Zealand or Europe for a few years while Abbey Ray's still a wee one. But my wife has been wonderful about the work when it does take me out of town. Many of friends have managed it all, so I imagine we will too; we should be blessed with such problems, right?
What are some of your favorite place around the world?
Wandering the old streets of Barcelona, the Playhouses of London, NYC's Central Park, Muir Woods just over the Golden Gate Bridge and Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, Ca.
You are one of the hardest working and most experienced actors in today’s industry – and yet you manage to avoid the excesses of the paparazzi. How do you balance keeping a private life with the demands of your work to be in the spotlight?
Well, going back to what a 'working class' actor is; I'm familiar to a lot of people because I've been in such broad spectrum of venues, but I don't necessarily stand out as one particular role, one that the paparazzi or public is that enamored or obsessed with, so I get the benefits of being known, but without the downside of being crazily sought after. (Again, if you need a STAR, however......)
You’ve been active in the union movement on behalf of stage and screen actors and others in the entertainment industry, and have held union elective office. Could you imagine a political career in the future?
I've really enjoyed my experience on the SAG Hollywood Board; it's a great reminder that you need to have personal responsibility for what goes on in your Union, or for that matter in your City, State and Nation. As much as I would be interested in a political career, I think working with a baby, a chimpanzee and Screech in a single episode of "Saved By The Bell: The College Years", disqualifies me.
It’s difficult to imagine now, that as an actor you’ve ever found yourself ‘resting’. How difficult is it to sift through the offers and scripts to find those that interest you? Are you very selective?
I love to work. And the next job is always the one I'm interested in finding out about. Different jobs rear their heads different ways; this past year has included Commercials, Low-Budget Films, 1/2 Sitcoms, Hourlong Guest Spots, Live Theatre and VoiceOver: I've been wildly fortunate and love to stay busy.
When you are ‘resting’ at home, what do you like to do for R & R?
Take walks with the whole family. (wife, baby & the two dogs) And cooking is very relaxing.
What musical preferences? Are you playing Mozart for your daughter?
I love Rock & Roll and 80's Hair Metal, but there's room in my head for lots of different things. We play a kaleidoscope of music for Abbey Ray; I hope she takes to it, but you cannot force it. (So far, Rock-a-Bye Baby: Pink Floyd is a big hit!)
What movies have you enjoyed recently?
Loved "The Social Network", "Inception" and "The Awful Truth"(Cary Grant)
Your character in “Working Class’ dresses exceptionally well for a grocery store manager! An anomaly of the storyline? Your stage and screen characters have provided just about every costume statement that could ever be made! What styles reflect your personal comfort zones?
Only on television does a store manager sport Theory, Donna Karan & Armani: What a great business! I love comfortable, horse-riding clothing; Robert Redford around 1974. And the 'Swashbuckler' wardrobe from "Xena" will be hard to top.
Can you give an idea of where you see your career progressing over the next few years? Maybe the next James Bond? Could you ever imagine living elsewhere from LA or is that almost a necessity that comes with the work?
Did you say Bond?  I'd love to spend a chunk of time in New York, albeit with a steady gig. But I love Los Angeles, its home for me and my family now and I wouldn't have it any other way.
It’s clear that you are a man with an active social conscience and also a man of letters – graduate of Penn State & California State Universities. Do you have any words of advice to young actors and performers starting their careers in today’s entertainment industry?
It's the greatest business when's it's all working; and absolutely devastating when it doesn't. Don't take it or yourself too seriously. However, learn your craft. Go to school or take class, and take IT seriously.

In Shadow We Fall - Devin Madson
...
This book is a novella-length prequel to Madson’s Vengeance Trilogy (pimped here), there are no spoilers for those who have read the trilogy, and you don’t need to have read VT to enjoy this tale. And enjoy it you will.
Madson has a knack for creating characters that are not only well-rounded but also on the grey side. While this book skirts the boundaries of full-on grimdark, it so beautifully dips it toes into the genre that if you’re a fan of stories that blur the lines between light and dark then this tale is definitely one you should pick up.
Set in a pseudo-feudal-Japanese world, the Kisian empire is on the brink of war, held together by fragile threads. Nothing is ever what it seems in Madson’s books, and she doesn’t disappoint here. The language is beautiful, the rituals and ceremonies befitting when gods sit on thrones. The Eastern-flavour of this universe is refreshing, and the setting and imagery comes to life on the pages.
Blurb:
You will die. Your children will die. The empire will burn,
Empress Li is out of favour at court. Foreign-born and past her prime, she is to be set aside. But she won’t go quietly. With nothing left to lose, Li will do anything to stop Emperor Lan signing a secret alliance that could tear the empire apart. Yet when her life is threatened, old mistakes come back to haunt her and only a three-year-old boy can change the course of history.
With everything at stake, could an innocent child be the best assassin.
And you can’t go past that cover. This is original artwork created for In Shadows We Fall, and artist John Anthony Di Giovanni has produced a thing of beauty that captures the essence of Empress Li. There’s always something special about covers that contain original artwork, and Madson’s cover is why.
On a Goodreads scale, I give In Shadows We Fall five stars.
Recommended for readers of fantasy, dark fantasy, political intrigue, stabby-stabby, killer magic systems.
You can read In Shadows We Fall free if you sign up to Madson’s newsletter (an ebook copy of the story will be sent to you).  You can also purchase ebook and print from the website here, or you can purchase from Amazon or wherever you buy your reading.

* Soi kèo tài xỉu: Về cơ bản, đôi bên đều còn động lực chiến đấu, và không thể chủ quan ở cuộc đối đầu này. Thực tế thì các trận gần đây của 2 đội cũng khan hiếm bàn thắng. Theo đó, 5 vòng gần nhất của Santos cùng 4/5 vòng vừa qua của RB Bragantino và 4/5 lần đối đầu mới đây giữa đôi bên cũng đều xuất hiện không quá 2 lần lưới rung. Vậy nên lựa chọn xỉu xem ra vẫn khả dĩ trận này.
=> Chọn Xỉu (2 1/4) cả trận
* Thành tích đối đầu:
- Santos thắng 2 và thua 3 trong 10 lần đụng độ gần nhất với Bragantino.
- 10 lần tiếp Bragantino trên sân nhà mới đây, Santos thắng 5, thua 2.
* Thông tin lực lượng:
- Santos: Sandry Santos, Malthus, Baptistao, Jobson, Camacho, John chấn thương; Madson bị treo giò.
- Bragantino: Tubarao, Raul chấn thương; Ramires (treo giò); Léo Ortiz (nghi ngờ); Hurtado về tập trung ĐTQG.
* Đội hình dự kiến:
Nhận định bóng đá Santos vs Bragantino, 05h00 ngày 11/11: VĐQG Brazil
* Dự đoán tỷ số: Santos 1-0 Bragantino
