Seeing people finally give Pete Wentz credit for the work he contributed for Vices & Virtues, instead of insisting it was either Dallon or Ryan every five minutes, has me believing in Christmas miracles!
Like, don't get me wrong, I think Pete still owns way less than 50% of the royalties, and the point of Pete and Brendon working together was because Brendon needed a lyrical mentor during 2009 (same reason Rivers was brought onto do that one song with Brendon that never saw the light of day), and Butch and John still worked more on that album than Pete...
But it's still nice to see people discussing the writing credits on Vices & Virtues correctly for once. So, here, have a nice photo of four mustaches and four pairs of jeans, as a treat.
Tumblr media
Just for context: The guy in the white shirt is John Feldmann from Goldfinger, who co-produced Vices & Virtues along with Butch Walker, and if you like 5SOS, you may also be slightly familiar with John's work.

Big fun talking with The Veronicas about their new album, Gothic Summer! We also go to nerd out about bands like The B-52’s and The Cramps, and working once again with John Feldmann.
Catch it at Consequence or podcasts.

Always (+ the broken ankle story at the end)
youtube
'Always' was often spoken about as being the most "Pretty. Odd. sounding song on the album" by everyone (including critics). Basically, a very PATD fandom way of saying "It's a slow acoustic song". Brendon did speak about these types of comments made towards the song.
Brendon: I guess there are moments where a song like "Always," on the new record, it was written in that [Pretty. Odd.] style because it was one of the first ones we had after the split, and that was the type of stuff we were writing. - Bullz-Eye
The way Brendon talks about 'Always' both in the above comment and here does imply that the idea for song may have come from around the end of Pretty. Odd. era (either he started wrote it on tour or around the beginning of 2009), kind of like how 'The Ballad of Mona Lisa' was post-Fever touring phase but pre-Cabin writing phase. But I think if he did write it around that time, the lyrics were not done, and it was likely just an acoustic instrumental. He just had the basic idea for it, and needed help putting the lyrics together.
Brendon spoke about this song a couple of times. But he spoke about its conception once in an interview:
Interviewer: Tell us about uh the song 'Always'. It's not a Bon Jovi cover. Brendon: (laughs) No, no, it's not. Interviewer: But it is kind of your, I suppose it's like a modern-day power ballad? Brendon: Yeah, it's-it's somewhat of a ballad. Yeah, it's definitely a slower, kind of more sentimental song. Um... Interviewer: That song sounds to me like, you know, one that really could have been I'm sure they're all written on guitar or piano or whatever instrument you had there but-but that one it sounds like you wrote the song and went "That's it! That's-that's good enough!" You know? A least a little bit. Brendon: Yeah it did. It kind of it sounded similar to it was just acoustic guitar and vocals, and we were sitting at Feldmann's house just around the campfire. Like, we had been in the house all day for 10 hours and we were, just kind of losing our minds like "All right, let's let's go outside and get some fresh air" Some "fresh" LA air? (to Spencer) I don't know what that would be? (back to interviewer) [...] It's just kind of one of those ones... I mean once in a while, we would get those moments where a song would come a little bit easier than the other ones had in the past. So, that was one that, um, you know, some of the lyrics were written, but a lot of them were finished during the writing process which ended up being really nice kind of cathartic in a sense. - Noise11
Brendon dedicated this song to Sarah twice, and to Spencer once.
Here's the time he first dedicated it to Sarah, when they were playing at the same venue (Fillmore) that they met in Detroit. "You're my love, and you know it."
youtube
Second time he dedicated it to Sarah when they were in Detroit again, "sitting on the side of the stage like a little creeper".
Then he dedicated it to Spencer the day before his Birthday, saying, "Tomorrow is one of my best friends' in the world's birthday. He plays drums for us, his name is Spencer James Smith. I'd like to dedicate this song to him now cause he's such a sexy bastard!"
youtube
About the Time Brendon (Almost) Broke His Ankle (I feel like this is the best place to put this story)
(Not So) Fun Fact: It was after this song that Brendon almost broke his ankle onstage, and so people can understand what he means when he says he would go somewhere else in the room to sing it, this is what he means.
youtube
This was Brendon's statement at the time:
"In the middle of the show, I usually sprint around the venue to get to the front of house to play an acoustic number face-to-face with the fans. The song went over just fine, but on the way back to the stage I lost balance trying to sprint down some stairs. My ankle had swelled up to the size of a pool-ball, but the adrenaline had helped to subdue the pain. Got an OCL splint from the hospital where the doctor told me not to walk on it for at least three weeks. Well Doc, I don’t have three weeks. The shows will go on."
youtube
Whilst Brendon got his foot checked out by the off-stage medics, Dallon and Ian played 'Careless Whisper' and Dallon started singing "I'm never gonna dance again" as a joke.
youtube
Whenever Brendon was not on stage he was not putting weight on his foot for at least a week, and was still performing just after he had sprained it.
Tumblr media
He also had a splint that he had to wear for the rest of the tour, after he could stop wearing it during the day, he still had to wear it at night.
youtube
And he was also on vicodin for the pain and to take the swelling down.
youtube
Here's Brendon telling the story in 2015.
