The Ptolemies, Rise of a Dynasty: Ptolemaic Egypt 330–246 BC
The first volume of John D. Grainger's trilogy on the Ptolemaic Kingdom provides an overview of Ptolemaic history from 330 to 246 BCE. It explains the formation of the Ptolemaic Kingdom, focusing on the reign of Ptolemy II. A new overview of the Ptolemies is a timely idea but the result is underwhelming. The book adequately covers the dynasty's development and interactions with neighboring states. Yet, Grainger's shallow grasp of politics and society in Ptolemaic Egypt decreases its value.
In the introduction, Grainger makes the disconcertingly false claim that Ptolemaic Egypt’s political and military affairs were solely the province of Greek immigrants. He further states that no native Egyptian held office “above the level of the village headman.”(xii) This statement seemingly ignores the plethora of evidence for Egyptian governors, ministers, scribes, and priests who helped to run Egypt during the reign of Alexander the Great and his successors. Strangely, Grainger contradicts himself later in the book by briefly touching on Egyptian participation in the Ptolemaic military and political administration.
This initial flawed premise may be excused as a pretext for Grainger to focus on the historical accounts of Greek authors rather than on evidence from Ptolemaic Egypt. This would be an understandable decision on its own merit, as Greek history should be closer to the author's area of expertise. Unfortunately, the book falls short of even this limited goal. The usual primary sources are cited to build the basic framework of Ptolemaic history, but there is little critical analysis of these sources. The Ptolemies, Rise of a Dynasty is primarily a succinct summary of ancient authors such as Arrian, Diodorus Siculus, Justin, Pausanias, and Curtus Rufius, although it is not usable as a sourcebook.
Grainger succeeds in explaining the creation of fundamental Ptolemaic institutions, such as the royal cult, sibling marriage, and the cleruchic system of landed settler-soldiers. His grasp on Ptolemaic bureaucracy and fiscal policy is somewhat weaker, but this is fortunately not a focus of the book. Grainger makes the case that the foundational dynastic policies established under Ptolemy II, whose reign is often considered a high point in Ptolemaic history, actually paved the way for the dynasty's demise. He states that “the autocratic, extravagant, and unmilitary choices of Ptolemy II contributed directly to his empire’s eventual collapse.” (p. 260) This is an interesting idea, although it is never fully developed or expanded upon.
This book shines in its description of Mediterranean power struggles, guiding readers through Ptolemy I’s wars against the other Diadochi and Ptolemy II’s coastal wars from Asia Minor up to the Aegean. The Ptolemaic Kingdom's connections with the broader ancient world, from India to the Black Sea, are also mentioned. The first two Syrian Wars feature prominently, establishing the central conflict between the Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Seleucid Empire. The book closes with a brief period of peace during the end of Ptolemy II's reign, though readers are left with a good impression of how the seeds of future conflicts had already been shown.
The book has a handful of basic maps at the beginning, which are sufficient to help readers visualize where the action takes place. There is a collection of mostly public-domain images in the middle of the book. Grainger is at his best in the endnotes, when he is pointing readers in the direction of better books such as Gunther Hölbl’s A History of the Ptolemaic Empire (2001).
John D. Grainger is a former teacher and independent scholar. He has authored numerous books on Classical history, including multiple volumes dealing with the Hellenistic period and the Diadochi.

OC is from my fic. But I’m giving you a heads up, my fic itself is highkey trash. I apologize in advance.
Mary “Molly” Strong (b. 1752)
Tumblr media
fc: Holliday Grainger
Molly was born and raised in Setauket, Long Island, NY. She struggled to make friends with girls her age, and this led to her spending much of her childhood pin the company of her younger brother, Selah, and his friends. She was known to get into fights to defend her brother (and occasionally his friends) from bullies. Generally, she was not well-liked by the other children. When her brother was arrested by the King’s Army in 1776, she was employed at his tavern as a barmaid.
*She’s roughly aged mid to late-20s, even early 30s in some cases. Her default verse is Turn: Washington’s Spies. See other verses here.

Family Selah Strong (half-brother) (b. 1754) Anna Strong (sister-in-law) Thomas Strong (father) (b. 1732, d. 1773) Moira Strong (mother) (b. 1735, d.1773)
for those not familiar with turn: washington’s spies and selah’s background
Selah Strong
Tumblr media
fc: Robert Beitzel
Selah was born and raised in Setauket, Long Island, NY. Despite his like for adventure and games, he was a relatively shy child. He became more vocal after his parents’ death in 1773. Though still level-headed and quiet in his adulthood, he shares several of his sister’s poor qualities such as her temper.
.
Family Mary “Molly” Strong (half-sister) (b. 1752) Anna Strong (wife) Thomas Strong (adoptive father) (b. 1732, d. 1773) Moira Strong (mother) (b. 1735, d.1773) John Robeson (father) (b. 1731, d. 1778)
.
The Strong family has inhabited Long Island since the early 18th-century. Thomas’ parents hailed from English descent and lived in the colonies making their wealth as farmers. As a teenager, his parents employed the work of an indentured servant (Moira) who was recently arrived to the colonies. Thomas and Moira were around the same age and they quickly became acquainted, soon becoming lovers. Moira became pregnant early into the affair and her condition led to Thomas asking her to be his wife. Because of Moira’s age and because she had not reached the end of her servitude’s contract, Thomas’ parents asked Thomas and Moira to live at Strong Manor so they could continue to help with the harvest and other family affairs. Molly was born in 1752.
Thomas quickly became obsessed with finding ways to pay off Moira’s servitude so he and her could move to a home of their own. He began to explore entrepreneurial options. During the first year of their marriage, he was often gone during the weekends, travelling to York City on business. Dissatisfied with her marriage, that same year Moira began an affair with a local fisherman, John Robeson. She fell pregnant with his child but never revealed to him the truth. She allowed Thomas to believe the child was his. Selah was born in 1754. Selah’s true parentage is never made known to anyone else; Moira’s secret died with her.
In 1760, Thomas’ father died and in 1762 his mother died. After inheriting the family estate, Strong Manor, as well as the family’s farmland, Thomas continued to be obsessed with his family’s finances, continuing to fixate on making money outside of the Strong’s farming assets. Throughout the next decade, his exploits often left his family in the midst of financial ruin. A proud man, Thomas forbid the family from ever revealing their troubled circumstances in times of poverty. The worst it ever became was during the winter of 1763 when the Strong’s harvest failed and Thomas owed money for his debts. The family made due by scrounging any sort of food possible to survive, at one point resorting to boiling the leather in their shoes. – It is because of their harsh upbringing why Selah was able to withstand his imprisonment on The Jersey and why Molly could so easily fall into the mindset and practice of rationing when she eventually becomes a camp follower for the Continental Army. – During their childhood, Molly and Selah often found any excuse possible to be away from home. They became inviting themselves to neighborhood children’s homes for supper during hard times. When being a guest was not an option, Molly got into a habit of stealing food from Lucas Brewster’s apple orchards, hoarding whatever she could to ensure she and Selah got a meal.
In 1773, an illness swept through Setauket, killing Thomas and Moira (for the purposes of my headcanon, I say the fever also killed Caleb Brewster’s parents and Benjamin Tallmadge’s mother as well as several other townspeople – depending on your preference for when Abe Woodhull’s mother dies, this could be when she died). As the sole heir to his family’s assets, Selah inherited his family’s estate and land. He asked Molly to continue living with him. As winter approached in 1773, Selah became interested in building a new tavern in town – the former tavern was old and run down – and Selah, paranoid about never having enough savings, knew it would be a sound decision to have a business that could provide an income year-round rather than relying on the harvest. By the end of 1774 he had purchased the former tavern in town and rebuilt one of his own. Selah married his childhood friend Anna Smith in 1774.
When the beginnings of revolution began in the colonies, Selah supported the rebels. Molly, more neutral on the conflict, soon found herself supporting the rebels as well to align with her brother. Despite his beliefs, Selah had no interest in enlisting in the Continental Army.
In 1776, Selah was arrested for insurrection, falsely accused of attacking one of his tavern’s customers, an officer in the King’s Army. Ironically it was John Robeson (his birth father) who was responsible for his arrest.
Selah spent 4 months on a prison ship (The Jersey) for his charges, until he was freed by Robert Rogers for the purposes of a prisoner exchange. Eventually Selah was exchanged to the Continental Army and he enlisted as a soldier. After his bounty was up, he moved to Philadelphia where he began working for the Continental Congress, later becoming a Congressman. In Philadelphia, he made extra money by managing several local taverns’ books.
During his imprisonment, Molly remained in Setauket to help Anna manage the tavern and estate. Depending on the thread, she eventually becomes involved with espionage for General Washington, becoming a camp followers for the Cintinental Army by the end of the war.

In "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" Mr. Gibbons famously wrote that the Five Good Emperors were the apex of human happiness:
He would find himself rather disenchanted with the thesis of this one, which is all to the good. It bluntly notes that the rise of Emperor Nerva and the assassination of Emperor Domitian was not some sudden shift from the debauchery and hedonism of the Julio-Claudians and Flavians to a more mature and responsible government but a very literal putsch. Nerva, like Trajan and Hadrian, ultimately created the good ol' Latin Pronunciamento with the generals deciding now they are the ones in charge, stripped of any moral justification.
And as with the future of Latin society the Romans were largely apathetic to the generals toppling their nominal masters and deciding the world was theirs to do with what they will. In short the 'Five Good Emperors' were not that good and the actual history of what they were doing is much murkier and points to a future that the Romans would be unsurprised with, and which Latin America and Spain (and Italy and France and Romania) have all had to deal with in different ways.

every time i see a post about the statue that was pushed into the docks I have an ‘oh right that’s his name’ moment and then forget his name immediately. because the name of a slave trader and owner is not information i want stored in my head.
i do remember important names.
i remember Cherry Groce and Cynthia Jarrett and Leon Patterson and Joy Gardner and Oluwashijibomi Lapite and Brian Douglas and Alton Manning and Christopher Alder and Rocky Bennett and Roger Sylvester and Derek Bennett and Ricky Bishop and Michael Powell and Azelle Rodney and Jean Charles de Menezes and Mark Nunes and Habib Ullah and Sean Rigg and Seni Lewis and Jimmy Mubenga and Smiley Culture and Kingsley Burrell and Demetre Fraser and Mark Duggan and Jacob Michael and Anthony Grainger and Julian Cole and Leon Briggs and Faruk Ali and Aston McLean and Adrian Thompson and Adrian McDonald and Sheku Bayoh and Daniel Adewole and Jermaine Baker and Sarah Reed and Mzee Mohammed Daley and Edson da Costa and Shane Bryant and Darren Cumberbatch and Rashan Charles and Nuno Cardoso and Kevin Clarke and Trevor Smith and Belly Mujinga and AbigaĂŻl Bennett. i remember the names of British POC, ESPECIALLY BLACK PEOPLE, who were killed by a corrupt and racist system.
i remember Mary Seacole and Nanny of the Maroons and Mary Eliza Mahoney and Toussaint Louverture and Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr and Kofoworola Abeni Pratt. i remember the names of people who were wronged, whose legacies are an important part of Black history and global history.
i remember Dr Shirley Jackson and Madam CJ Walker and Lyda D Newman and Marie Van Brittan Brown and Valerie Thomas and Christina Jenkins and Theora Stephens and Lisa Gelobteran and Sarah Boone. i remember the names of Black women whose inventions are an essential part of our lives today, whose names are swept under the rug and hidden by the names of their white male counterparts.
i remember Jupiter Hammon and Wentworth Cheswell and Phillis Wheatley and James Derham and Thomas L Jennings and Alexander Twilight and Macon Allen and Joseph Jenkins Roberts and Charles L Reason and Sarah Jane Woodson Early and Mary Jane Patterson and Dr Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler and John Willis Menard and Thomas Mundy Peterson and Richard Theodore Greener and Frederick Douglass and Judy W Reed and John R Lynch and Booker T Washington and Butler R Wilson and Lucy Diggs Slowe and Bessie Coleman and Josephine Baker and William Grant Still and James W Ford and William H Hastie and Crystal Bird Fauset and Hattie McDaniel and Bob Howard and Amanda Randolph and Florence LeSueur and Juanita Hall and Ralphe Bunche and Cora Brown and Dorothy Dandridge and Arthur Mitchell and Ruth Carol Taylor and Ruby Bridges and Donyale Luna and Robert Henry Lawrence Jr and Cheryl Browne and Vinnette Justine Carroll and Alan Bell and Teddy Seymour and Barack Obama and Rita Dove and Darnell Martin and Chelsi Smith and Franklin Raines and Venus Williams and Halle Berry and Sophia Danenberg and Karen Bass and Anette Gordon-Reed and Kehinde Wiley and Amy Sherald and Ruth E Carter and so many more. i remember the names of all the Black firsts who are forgotten, whose accomplishments are ignored.
don’t waste brain space on racists. learn from their mistakes, yes. but learn about the Black people they tried to silence for so long. because i can’t think of a better way to spite racists than by remembering the people they tried to make us forget.

Sixty years ago, Little Rock closed all its public high schools rather than desegregate them
The tossed year.
On Sept. 27, 1958, 60 years ago this month, Little Rock decided by a vote of 19,470 to 7,561 to keep its public high schools closed rather than desegregate them. Although the events of school desegregation at Central High in September 1957 are etched in the local, state and national consciousness, the events of the following year are unjustly overlooked. When they are mentioned at all, people refer to them as the "Lost Year." The term is misleading because the year was not lost, but rather tossed — that is, thrown willfully away by a predominantly white Little Rock electorate that was hoodwinked by segregationist politicians into believing that the city could survive without public schools. Events proved just how wrong those politicians were.
School closing was the result of an ongoing legal battle over school desegregation. On Feb. 20, 1958, the Little Rock School Board petitioned U.S. District Court Judge Harry J. Lemley for a two-and-half-year delay in its desegregation plan. On June 21, Lemley granted the delay on the grounds that the city needed a cooling-off period after the clashes witnessed in September 1957. On Aug. 18, NAACP attorney Wiley Branton successfully had the delay overruled on appeal. School board attorneys then appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Since the Court did not convene until Oct. 6, it could not hear the appeal until after the Little Rock schools opened, presumably on a segregated basis, in September.
On Aug. 25, U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren announced that the court would meet in a special session Aug. 28 to hear the Little Rock case. On Sept. 12, the court ordered the school board to proceed with its desegregation plan. In the landmark ruling of Cooper v. Aaron, the court said that violence and disruption could not be used as an excuse for delaying school desegregation. If the court had allowed a delay, it would have signaled that mob rule could be used to stall the enforcement of federal laws. The federal government afterward indicated that it was prepared to support the opening of schools with the assistance of federal marshals if necessary. Everything appeared to be in place to ensure a smooth and orderly process of desegregation, in contrast to the scenes of lawlessness in 1957.
Gov. Orval Faubus had other plans. While desegregation was being debated in the courts, Faubus made his move. On Aug. 26, the governor presided over a special session of the Arkansas General Assembly that pushed through six bills providing him with sweeping powers to uphold segregation. One bill allowed Faubus to close any school ordered to desegregate by federal order. With the school closed, voters in the local school district would participate in a referendum to decide if the school should reopen or not. On the day that the court ordered desegregation to proceed, Faubus closed all of Little Rock's public high schools. In the referendum held Sept. 27, the governor handily stacked the cards in his favor by providing a single choice between keeping the schools closed or accepting "complete and total integration."
The morning after the referendum result, Faubus pressured the school board into leasing the public high schools to the Little Rock Private School Corp. (LRPSC) for private operation. NAACP attorneys won an injunction to stop this. Faubus then assisted the LRPSC in purchasing private buildings with public funds to operate as schools. That year, white students variously attended private segregated schools, schools in other Arkansas districts, out-of-state schools or took correspondence courses through the University of Arkansas. With access to fewer resources, black students were hit the hardest. Most attended classes in other Arkansas districts or went to an out-of-state school. Some took a correspondence course offered by L.M. Christophe, the principal of the black Horace Mann High School. The state retained both white and black teachers on full pay to preside over empty classrooms in closed schools. The only thing that took place in public high schools that year was Central High's football program, which was apparently the single part of its educational services that the city felt it could not survive without.
Faubus reaped the political benefits of school closing. In November 1958, he became only the second governor in Arkansas history to win a third consecutive term in office. The leading segregationist voice in the state, Arkansas Association of White Citizens' Council head Jim Johnson, won election to the Arkansas Supreme Court. In a shocking result, Little Rock segregationist and school board member Dale Alford defeated, as a write-in candidate, incumbent Congressman Brooks Hays, who had held the seat for 16 years. Meanwhile, all of the Little Rock School Board (except for Alford, who would soon leave to take up his role as congressman) resigned. As one of its final acts in office, the board voted to buy out the contract of school Superintendent Virgil Blossom, the architect of Little Rock's school desegregation plan.
The election of a new school board proved a watershed event. At the school-closing referendum, a group of white women had formed the Women's Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools (WEC). At its helm was Adolphine Fletcher Terry, the wife of former Arkansas Congressman David D. Terry. Although unsuccessful in getting the schools opened, the WEC, itself segregated, remained an important lobbying force within the white community. At the school board election, Terry managed to persuade five candidates to represent business interests against attempts by segregationists to dominate the school board. In a closely contested election, a split ticket of three business candidates and three segregationists won.
The partial victory belatedly stirred Little Rock's white businessmen to speak up about school desegregation. There was a rising awareness of the community damage being done. Teachers, unoccupied in empty classrooms, were leaving the public school system in droves. The education of the city's students was being severely disrupted. And, of more pressing concern to the businessmen, the city's economy was suffering badly. Not one new industry had chosen to locate in Little Rock since the events of September 1957. It was claimed that the negative headlines surrounding school desegregation had cost the city five new industrial plants that would have brought in $1 million in revenue and 300 new jobs.
E. Grainger Williams, the new president of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce, questioned the wisdom of school closing in his inaugural speech on Jan. 14, 1959. Williams told the audience that, "no matter what our personal feelings might be," the "time has come for us to evaluate ... the cost of the lack of public education." The politicians did not seem to care. The 1959 Arkansas General Assembly passed another 32 pro-segregation bills into law.
A showdown between the business community and committed segregationists in the city finally came in May 1959. At a meeting of the new school board May 5, segregationist members attempted to push through measures to remove anyone unsympathetic to their cause from the public school system. Blocking each of these measures, the school board members representing business interests then withdrew from the meeting to dissolve the quorum. However, after they left, Ed McKinley, the segregationist president of the school board, ruled that the meeting could continue as normal. Segregationists proceeded to make a series of arbitrary decisions about the running of the school system. Most dramatic of all was the decision not to renew the contracts of 44 public school employees, including seven principals, 34 teachers and three secretaries.
On May 8, a group of downtown business and civic leaders met to form a new organization, Stop This Outrageous Purge (STOP). The organization was dedicated to recalling the three segregationist school board members for election. On May 15, segregationists formed a Committee to Retain Our Segregated Schools (CROSS) to recall the business community representatives. On May 25, the day of the recall election, the vote narrowly went the businessmen's way, with all the business representatives reinstated and all the segregationist candidates dismissed from the school board. The new board, taking the election as a mandate to reopen the schools, began preparations for token desegregation in September 1959 by assigning three black students to Central High and three to Hall High. On June 18, the U.S. District Court upheld the contention of NAACP attorneys that Arkansas's school-closing laws were unconstitutional.
In a surprise move designed to stymie attempts by Faubus to prevent the schools from reopening, the school board announced in July that the school year would begin a month early, on Aug. 12. When the schools reopened as planned, three black students, Effie Jones, Elsie Robinson and Estella Thompson, peacefully entered Hall High under a city police guard. At the state Capitol, 1,000 whites attended a segregationist rally. Later, around 200 segregationists marched on Central High. City policemen firmly enforced order as two of the Little Rock Nine, Jefferson Thomas and Elizabeth Eckford, entered the school. Carlotta Walls, another of the Nine, and the third black student assigned to Central that year, had not yet returned from completing summer school in Chicago. For segregationists, the battle had been lost, and their struggle to retain strictly segregated public schools was finally over. The struggle to achieve the meaningful desegregation of the city's schools, and to ensure equal access to a quality education for all of the city's students, continued on, as it still does today.

The Ptolemies, Apogee and Collapse: Ptolemiac Egypt 246–146 BC
"The Ptolemies, Apogee and Collapse" is the second volume in Grainger's trilogy on the Ptolemaic Kingdom. It covers the timespan from 246 to 146 BCE, a period marked by massive battles in Syria, civil wars, and domestic unrest. As the title suggests, it is a general overview of the Ptolemaic dynasty’s decline from one of the great powers of the Mediterranean to a faded shadow of its former glory. Like the previous title in the series, it is of mixed quality but contains more good than bad.
The book opens with a summary of Ptolemaic history up to the ascension of Ptolemy III and a reasonable overview of the Ptolemaic Kingdom's constituent parts. This serves to establish the setting in which the book takes place, including Egypt, Cyrene, Coele-Syria, and Cyprus. This opening also serves to introduce readers to the uneasy hierarchy of Ptolemaic society, including priests, soldiers, and peasantry. These factions and their overlapping interests are shown to shape Ptolemaic history just as profoundly as the kings and queens who sat at the top of the hierarchy.
Grainger brusquely, and somewhat incorrectly, summarizes the internal politics of Ptolemaic Egypt as a tense conflict between impoverished Egyptians and wealthy Greeks. He treats the Egyptian aristocracy as a resentful ally of the Ptolemaic dynasty and the Greek aristocracy as its loyal guard dogs. This assessment fails to account for the more complex reality, in which both Greek and Egyptian elites sought greater power through cooperation and usurpation. Grainger’s handling of Egyptian society remains one of the weakest points in this series, which is regrettable given that Egypt is the core of the Ptolemaic Kingdom.
The book returns quickly with a summary of Ptolemy III’s early obstacles, from supporting his sister Berenike's failed coup in the Seleucid Empire to his more successful attempts to forcefully annex Seleucid territory. The book continues through the reigns of Ptolemy IV and Ptolemy V, who preside over an increasingly chaotic period of Ptolemaic history. The first Cleopatras, from Cleopatra I and Cleopatra II, are also discussed at length. The perennial conflict between the Ptolemies and the Seleucids dominates the action, followed closely by the conflict between the Ptolemies and their own subjects.
The result of territorial acquisitions was that the Ptolemaic army was stretched thin and military expenditures rose. Territorial losses led to decreased morale and a more limited population to recruit from. Famine and drought lead to uprisings in Ptolemaic territory. Moreover, the appointment of ruthless royal advisors created resentment in the capital, Alexandria, and the resulting riots and coups only weakened the politics further. At one point c. 205–187 BCE, a rebellion under a usurper pharaoh in southern Egypt divided the kingdom. Here, Grainger demonstrates a knack for summarizing military conflicts and the logistical challenges facing the Ptolemies.
The later chapters of the book deal with the lessening power and prestige of the Ptolemaic dynasty, amidst violent competition for the crown between royal siblings. This coincides with increasingly frequent interactions between Egypt and the Roman Republic, beginning with friendship and quickly evolving into a Ptolemaic reliance on Roman political support. Grainger’s central argument, that the Ptolemaic dynasty was “excessively centralized and autocratic, by army coups” (p. 212) is better articulated in this volume than in the first book.
John D. Grainger is a former teacher and independent scholar. He has authored numerous books on Classical history, including multiple volumes dealing with the Hellenistic period and the Diadochi.
