Waiting for Godot - Broadway - November 24, 2013 (Opening Night) (Lanelle's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Aidan Gemme (The Boy), Billy Crudup (Lucky), Ian McKellen (Estragon), Patrick Stewart (Vladimir), Shuler Hensley (Pozzo)
War Horse - West End - February 27, 2014 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MKV (HD) CAST: Sion Daniel Young (Albert Narracott), Josie Walker (Rose Narracott), Alistair Brammer (Billy Narracott), Alex Avery (Captain Nicholls), Steve North (Ted Narracott), Tom Hodgkins (Arthur Narracott) NOTES: Multi-cam pro-shot broadcast live to cinemas as part of National Theatre Live, Includes interval interview and documentary.
War Paint - Broadway - March 11, 2017 (Preview) (SunsetBlvd79's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: Beautiful HD capture of the Broadway transfer. Some changes for Broadway from the previous Goodman Theater production. Excellent performances from the entire cast with clear picture and great sound throughout; very good video. 2 DVDs. A War Paint - Broadway - April 29, 2017 (Matinee) (NYCG8R's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Patti LuPone (Helena Rubinstein), Christine Ebersole (Elizabeth Arden), John Dossett (Tommy Lewis), Douglas Sills (Harry Fleming) NOTES: The master gets caught during Face to Face. You can hear someone say “TURN IT OFF”. Blackout during that part. Wasted - Southwark Playhouse - 2018 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Matthew Jacobs Morgan (Branwell Brontë), Molly Lynch (Anne Brontë), Natasha Barnes (Charlotte Brontë), Siobhan Athwal (Emily Brontë) We Are The Tigers - Off-Broadway - March, 2019 (StarCuffedJeans's master) FORMAT:  MP4 (HD) CAST: Lauren Zakrin (Riley Williams), Wonu Ogunfowora (Cairo), Jenny Rose Baker (Kate Dalton), MiMi Scardulla (Reese), Kaitlyn Frank (Annleigh), Cathy Ang (Mattie Wheeler), Celeste Rose (Chess), Zoe Jensen (Farrah), Sydney Parra (Eva Sanchez), Louis Griffin (Clark) NOTES: Starts at the beginning of "I Just Wanna" and missing part of "Mattie's Lament." The theater was really full tonight so there are a good number of heads in this video, but they are worked around to the best of my ability. This is a super small theater (less than 160 seats) and at times the cast members were definitely singing to the camera and honestly giving their best performances because of it. All of the things on the upper level (the bathroom, the pathway, and the kitchen) are captured perfectly, and the zooms on the lower level (the living room and bench) look good as well. Obviously because this is a murder mystery kind of show the lighting can get a little bit dark, but my camera handles low lighting incredibly well. This is honestly the best video you could expect from this venue We Will Rock You - Germany (Cologne) - August, 2005 (Pro-Shot's master) FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: Alex Melcher (Galileo), Vera Bolten (Scaramouche), Brigitte Oelke (Killer Queen), Martin Berger (Khashoggi), Michaela Kovarikova (Meat/Oz), DMJ (Brit/J.B.), James Sbano (Pop/Buddy/Bap), Harald Tauber (Teacher), Willemijn Verkaik NOTES: Multicam proshot We Will Rock You - Utrecht (The Netherlands) - October, 2010 FORMAT:  VOB (with smalls) (SD) CAST: John Vooijs (Galileo), Marjolein Teepen (Scaramouche), Pia Douwes (Killer Queen), Paul Donkers (Khashoggi), Floortje Smit (Meat/Oz), Ruud van Overdijk (Brit/J.B.), Rutger le Poole (Pop/Buddy/Bap) NOTES: Good capture. Heads in the way, but also a lot of good close-ups. Dubble DVD! Very well captured with no dropouts, no obstruction, and no washout. The stage is filmed directly most of the time; the screens are occasionally filmed, usually when the actors are not onstage. I am not here to bully you, preach at you or even expect you to listen to anything I really say. I being sick all of my life grew up slightly different than most. I went to school when I could, but there were months years that I didn't leave a hospital. I am not going to even speak as to what that fiscal weight did to my family, I am pontificating upon the fact that I was able to expand my mind in ways that most never ever do. I grew up with Shakespeare and Tolkien, Jefferson and Paine, the force and superheroes and they all congealed into this misfit that You all seem to like. Though when you have all these words and ideas and possibilities floating in my strata... I am motivated to live my ideals with all the force that I can bring to bear... Thomas Jefferson believed it was a waste to not Live to your duties in a republic, and this being the twentieth century, it is OUR duty to make the people who were elected to represent us KNOW who the three hundred pound gorilla in the room is. I am not going to tell you what to do, what to think, I am sure if any of you would be surprised at how I think... you just have not been paying attention. BUT YOUR JOB being a citizen of the world and to my expertise, the UNITED states is to VOICE YOUR CONSCIENCE when you hear it. Due diligence and my mastery of research has garnered the Individual office numbers to the United States Congress, I URGE you to call as many times as your conscience tells you and voice your truth...  INdividual congressional lines

Create Your Own MBA Program
Many small business owners are typically self-taught in the ways that make them successful. Most small business owners do not have an MBA, which actually is a good thing. Formal business education, specifically the typical MBA program, is geared more toward the large corporate environment and not the small business environment that agency owners operate in.
So, how would one design a two year MBA program for the small business agency owner? The program is based on a trimester system and the students are required to read a book a month for two years. There will be six areas of study, with a bonus session to allow a concentration for the insurance industry. By the end of these two years, students will have the right information to operate a small business and be successful.
The key purpose of this program is to accelerate through the learning curve. Much of the information the students will learn has been around for a while and it works. Successful business owners do not re-invent the wheel. They take a proven idea and adapt it. This cuts out the time and expense of having to learn it on their own.
1. The first trimester focuses on understanding one self and others. What skills and knowledge are needed to be successful? All of these books are classics and three of them have been around for over 75 years. In order to be a great business owner, one needs to understand themself, as well as understand how best to relate to other people.
· 7 Habits of Highly Successful People by Steve Covey
· How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
· Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
· The Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Classen
2. The second trimester is an introduction to business and the philosophy of business. Most small business owners got into their business because they were good at what they did. Michael Gerber created the mantra of “Work on the business and not in the business,” so his book is a must read. The other books will round out one’s understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur and small business owner.
· The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber
· Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It … and Why the Rest Don’t by Verne Harnish
· Rework by Jason Fried
· The Personal MBA: Master the Art of Busines s By Josh Kaufman
3. Sales and marketing is covered in the third trimester. The books in this session will go from the big picture of sales and marketing to the nitty-gritty details of how to do it. Sales people will like the books by Schley and Holmes and the marketing folks will hone in on the books by Heath and Gladwell.
· Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Don’t by Chip Heath and Dan Heath
· The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell
· The Micro-Script Rules: It’s not what people hear. It’s what they repeat … by Bill Schley
· The Ultimate Sales Machine by Chet Holmes
4. Welcome to year two! The fourth trimester is all about management and leadership. Satisfied employees are critical to the success of a business. Some people are natural leaders while others can be great leaders with some training. The material and ideas in these books are practical and easy to learn.
· The One Minute Manage r by Ken Blanchard and Spenser Johnson
· The Dilbert Principle by Scott Adams
· The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell
· Drive by Daniel Pink
5. The fifth trimester focuses on an area that business owners easily get or perpetually struggle with – economics and business financials. Even if it is a turn off for some small business owners, it is still important that the basics are understood. Accounting is a subject that does not translate well to books, so that subject will be covered using online videos. There are many free videos that will cover both the basics and the details of accounting.
· Basic Economics: A Common Sense Guide to the Economy and Economic Facts and Fallacies by Thomas Sowell
· Financial Intelligence A Manager’s Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean by Karen Berman and Joe Knight
· Various online videos on accounting
6. Now that the business is running, what is next? A successful business is not static; it undergoes constant change and improvement. The sixth trimester introduces philosophy of change and techniques on how to re-think the business operations.
· Built to Last by Jim Collins and Jerry Porras
· Who Moved My Cheese by Spenser Johnson
· What Got You Here Won’t Get You There by Marshall Goldsmith
· First, Break All the Rules by Marcus Buckingham and Curt W. Coffman
Congratulations! Reading these 23 books will provide information more valuable to the small business owner than taught in most MBA programs! Graduates of this program now have the skills and knowledge to be even better business owners. Some graduates might want to continue on to a concentration within their industry.
Formal education can be valuable. However, the stereotypical small business owner has neither the time nor patience to attend an MBA program. There is so much good information that all business owners can easily have a customized “MBA Program.” So, crack open a book, turn on a kindle or plug in some ear buds, school is in session!

Carlisle Events’ 2019 Lakeland Winter AutoFest for Corvettes
Here is some good news for Corvette fans. If you live in the South or travel there to avoid harsh winters, Carlisle Events added the Winter AutoFest to their schedule. Many Corvette activities are embedded into this show’s schedule. It takes place at the Sun ’n Fun Expo Campus in Lakeland, Florida. It is a perfect place to park your Corvette and enjoy the many activities the show has to offer. This is the same company that presents the highly successful Corvettes at Carlisle show in Pennsylvania. The friendly and well-trained staff works hard to make your visit pleasant and enjoyable. Here is a little background about this unique company and how they expanded to Florida.
It began when Chip Miller and Bill Miller became friends in the early ’70s. The thing about their friendship is they shared the same last name, but were not related. Their business relationship grew over the years because they shared a passion for classic cars. They held their first automotive event at the Carlisle Fairgrounds (Pennsylvania) in 1974, and it was a rousing success. They began adding shows to their schedule and experienced rapid growth.
Chip and Bill created Carlisle Events in order to effectively manage this growth. Their next major decision was to create a permanent home for the company. In 1981, they purchased the 82-acre Carlisle Fairground site and made it the company’s headquarters. This purchase allowed them to make the Fairgrounds a more compatible location for their automotive events. During the ’80s and ’90s, the company continued to expand their schedule.
In 2013, Carlisle Events introduced itself to the Florida market by hosting events in Zephyrhills. Now, with Florida’s rapid growth, the company moved to the larger Sun ’n Fun complex in Lakeland, Florida. This year’s Lakeland Winter AutoFest was held on February 22-24, 2019, and was packed with Corvettes and visitors.
The 41st NCRS Winter Regional Meet was part of the Winter AutoFest activities and certified NCRS judges judged 42 Corvettes. A large hanger was used by the experts the judging. A total of 4,500 points are available for judges to award a Corvette. Ninety-four percent (4,230) of those points are the minimum required to qualify for a Top Flight certificate. Of the 42 Corvettes judged, 17 received Top Flight certificates. For owners who didn’t reach their goal they now have a good guideline on what needs correcting. People attending the show were welcome to visit the NCRS building, and many did. It was a great opportunity to closely inspect these factory-correct, historic Corvettes. In addition to the NCRS event, the show featured a Corvette Fun Field, Corvette Celebrity Judging, vendor displays and seven Corvette related seminars. There was a food midway, automotive flea market and a for sale car corral where buyers could purchase their perfect Corvette. The National Corvette Museum sold $10 raffle tickets for the opportunity to win a 2019 Corvette. The Winter AutoFest will return to Lakeland February 21-23, 2020. To get the latest show information visit www.carlisleevents.com.
Co-founder Chip Miller passed away in 2004. His son Lance Miller became co-owner and works with co-founder/co-owner Bill Miller Jr. to manage the company. Lance wants to continue his dad’s “Life is Good” mentality and legacy as the 21st century rolls forward. What started as a pair of automotive flea markets in the mid to late ’70s has spawned specialty show after specialty show. Their 2019 schedule includes 10 automotive events (including one in Lakeland) and four Carlisle Auctions (including one in Lakeland). The company has evolved from “cars in a field” to destination activities for individuals and families from around the world. Annually, more than half a million guests visit shows promoted by Carlisle Events. We encourage you to visit one of their Corvette shows in Pennsylvania or Florida … you will not be disappointed. Forty-two Corvettes were brought to the 41st NCRS Winter Regional Meet to get judged for coveted awards. John Secchiano’s 1967 427 coupe was awarded Top Flight.
NCRS judges inspect John Landis’ 1965 L78 396/425hp Corvette. John’s Corvette earned Top Flight.
The L78 396/425hp big-block in John Landis’ Corvette has been restored to look like it did when it left the St. Louis assembly plant in 1965.
James Henry purchased this one-owner 1967 coupe in 2010. It was damaged in a flood and did not run. James repaired it and has driven it around the country. He was presented with a Sportsman award.
The ’67 Corvette has amassed 245,000 miles since it was built. The unrestored original interior has held up surprisingly well.
The L75 327/300hp engine is backed with a two-speed Powerglide transmission and factory air conditioning. This car is a true survivor.
Bill Miller Jr. (co-founder/co-owner of Carlisle Events) spent much of his time watching over the collector car auction. Bill did an excellent job directing sellers and buyers to the right auction spots.
Mark Wiley drove 450 miles to bring his rare (1 of 4 produced) 1954 to the NCRS Winter Regional Meet for judging. Mark’s beautiful Corvette was awarded Top Flight with “longest driven” noted on his certificate.
This I-6/150hp six-cylinder engine in Mark Wiley’s 1954 Corvette had no oil stains even after being driven 450 miles to the NCRS Winter Regional Meet.
The large food court was a popular place to visit so attendees could buy a cold drink, snack or lunch.
Lance Miller (co-owner Carlisle Events) spent the weekend hosting social media events about the Winter AutoFest. Lance is shown conducting a live podcast to provide up to the minute information for those attending the show.
The Lakeland Winter Collector Car Auction was a popular stop for buyers and spectators. Lots of interesting cars and trucks crossed the block throughout the weekend and many found new homes.
This large automotive flea market provided attendees plenty of shopping space to locate hard-to-find parts.
Carl Everett put his big-block 1969 Corvette convertible through the “as manufactured” Performance Verification testing process. His car passed after it did not have a single failure.
Larry Sturm’s Bowling Green-assembled two-tone 1981 Corvette was presented in like-new condition. It was awarded a Top Flight at the NCRS Winter Regional Meet.
This bright-red 1989 convertible owned by Fred Jenkins received a Performance Verification Award.
Paul Schwack’s 1996 Commemorative Edition Corvette received the Hill Mark of Excellence Award. This award recognizes owners for the preservation of 1993-’02 Corvettes.
Carlisle Events provides very clear signage that easily directs incoming guests to their correct entrance.
Coffman Corvette received a Modified 427 award for this restomod 1965 Corvette convertible. It features many newer parts while retaining the look of a classic 1965 convertible.
The engine in the Coffman Corvette has a vintage-appearing fuel-injection unit that hides a newer technology LS Classics fuel-injection system. It is a very impressive presentation.

It’s not a blue wave. It’s a realignment of American politics
Tumblr media
(CNN)In next week’s midterm elections, President Donald Trump is poised to put his stamp on each party’s demographic and geographic base of support as surely as he formerly fastened it to one of his hotels.
Democrats’ top opportunities to capture Republican-held seats are concentrated in well-educated, higher-income and preponderantly white districts. Most of these seats are centered on economically thriving suburbs around major metropolitan areas where Trump faces widespread resistance among white-collar voters, especially women, on cultural and personal grounds.
With only a few exceptions, Democrats face more uncertain prospects in Republican-held House seats centered on the blue-collar, exurban and rural communities where Trump remains popular, the analysis found. Of the 43 Republican-held seats that CNN considers leaning toward the Democrats or toss-ups, only nine are in districts where the white population exceeds the national average and the share of residents with college degrees lags the national average.
This stark divergence carries several clear implications, both for election night and beyond.
The trench dividing America
Most immediately, it means that Democrats, while still favored by most analysts to win control of the House, are operating with relatively little room for error because they are trying to gain the 23 seats they need predominantly on one part of the playing field: well-educated suburban seats. Even if they do reach a majority next week, its likely the Democratic hold on the House will be precarious and very slim unless they can also capture a respectable number of the small-town and blue-collar seats now considered toss-ups.
Tumblr media
The longer-term implication is that this election now seems highly likely to widen the trench between a Democratic Party that increasingly controls the major metropolitan areas largely skeptical of Trump and a GOP whose dominance is barely dented in the rural and exurban areas where he remains strong.
Already, the CNN analysis shows, about two-thirds of House Republicans represent districts where the education level lags the national average and nearly three-fifths hold seats where the median income is lower as well. By contrast, about 53% of Democrats hold seats where the education level and median income exceed the national average. If Democratic gains next month are concentrated mostly in white-collar seats, the Republican caucus will tilt ever further toward lower-education and modest-income seats while the Democrats will bend further toward the opposite — expanding the distance between the two sides and making compromise between them even more difficult.
That geographic divergence represents the stark separation in demographic responses to Trump’s tumultuous presidency, with minorities, millennials and college-educated whites, especially women, recoiling from him in large numbers and blue-collar, older and evangelical whites providing him robust, even record, levels of support.
Not a wave, a realignment
In an NPR/Marist Poll released late last week, for instance, Democrats led on the “generic” ballot for Congress by 76 percentage points among African-Americans, 42 among Latinos, 35 among 18- to 29-year-olds and 9 among whites holding at least four-year college degrees. Republicans led by 56 percentage points among white evangelical Christians, 28 among rural residents and 21 among whites with less than four-year college degrees. College-educated white women preferred Democrats by 18 percentage points; non-college white men backed Republicans by 33 points.
“It’s part of the sorting of the parties more by demographic characteristics, education being a very important one,” says Gary C. Jacobson, a professor of political science emeritus at the University of California at San Diego who specializes in Congress. “The whole story of this election is Trump and how he affects voters. He clearly has driven away educated voters, especially educated women, with his style. Rural people, blue-collar people, don’t mind it so much. They cut him some slack because they think he is on their side.”
Similarly, longtime Democratic pollster Stanley B. Greenberg argues that those debating whether this election will produce a Democratic “wave” are analyzing it through the wrong lens. It’s more likely, he says, that this election, punctuated by unusually high turnout, produces a realignment in which the groups alienated from Trump — led by college white women, minorities and millennials — consolidate around Democrats just as the groups that favor him, such as blue-collar and evangelical whites, consolidated behind Trump in 2016.
“I think he got his realignment … but now we are seeing the reaction to that,” Greenberg said.
To analyze the House battlefield CNN senior political producer Aaron Kessler used data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey five-year average to create a demographic profile of each House district. Each district was measured on whether it ranked above or below the national average across a series of key characteristics, including education and income levels, the share of the population that is nonwhite and the median age.
Then we compared those results with the latest CNN ranking of the 96 House districts considered most likely to switch parties (that includes 95 seats described as toss-up, lean or likely toward either party, and one Republican-held seat now considered “solid” for Democrats). That analysis produced several distinct patterns.
Democrats are best-positioned in wealthier, more educated districts that didn’t like Trump in 2016
The most striking is the concentration of the Democrats’ very best chances in relatively affluent and well-educated districts. CNN rates 14 seats now held by Republicans as solid, likely or leaning toward the Democrats next week. The median income exceeds the national average of $55,322 in all of those except the Tucson-area seat being vacated by Arizona Republican Martha McSally (who’s running for the Senate), where former Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick is a strong favorite.
The share of adults with college degrees exceeds the national average of about 30.3% in all of them except the New Jersey seat left open by retiring Republican Rep. Frank LoBiondo (where Democrat Jeff Van Drew is highly favored because Republicans nominated a fringe candidate who has expressed racist sentiments) and the northeast Iowa seat where Democrat Abby Finkenauer is mounting a strong challenge to Rep. Rod Blum.
Tumblr media
The other seats leaning toward Democrats that currently are held by Republicans are all in districts that are relatively better educated and affluent. They include Rep. Mike Coffman’s suburban Denver seat, Barbara Comstock’s seat in Northern Virginia, the suburban Minneapolis districts of Reps. Erik Paulsen and Jason Lewis and other open seats in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Orange County, California.
Of these 14 GOP districts that CNN classifies as most likely to flip, eight of them voted for Hillary Clinton over Trump in 2016. Trump won each of the others by 5 points or fewer.
Beyond these 14 Republican-held seats that CNN rates as leaning to the Democrats, control of the House will likely be decided in 29 more GOP-held seats CNN classifies as toss-ups.
These also lean toward better-educated and more affluent districts, though not as lopsidedly as the Democrats’ best chances. Of the 29 Republican-held districts considered toss-ups, 18 exceed the average median income and 17 exceed the average education level. In 2016, Clinton carried 13 of these 29 Republican toss-up districts.
In all, that means of the 43 Republican-held seats that CNN considers at greatest risk of falling to the Democrats, 31 (or nearly three-fourths) exceed the median income, while 29 (or just over two-thirds) exceed the average education level.
The Republican-held toss-up seats divide into two sharply delineated categories. The largest group generally resembles the affluent, well-educated suburban GOP seats where the Democrats’ best chances are concentrated. These include open seats outside Seattle; Charlotte, North Carolina; and in Orange County, California; and challenges to Republican incumbents Mimi Walters and Dana Rohrabacher also in Orange County; Dave Brat in Richmond, Virginia; Peter Roskam outside Chicago; Mike Bishop near Detroit; Leonard Lance in New Jersey; Brian Fitzpatrick near Philadelphia; John Culberson near Houston; David Young near Des Moines, Iowa; Kevin Yoder outside Kansas City, Missouri; and a rematch between Republican Rep. Troy Balderson and Democrat Danny O’Connor after Balderson narrowly won last summer’s closely watched special election for a district around Columbus, Ohio.
Many of the remaining GOP-held seats CNN rates as toss-ups will test the Democrats’ ability to make gains on Trump’s strongest ground: mostly white, heavily blue-collar areas. These include challenges to Republican incumbents Bruce Poliquin in Maine, John Faso and Claudia Tenney in New York, Mike Bost in Illinois, Scott Taylor in Virginia and an open seat in Kansas.
The toss-up seats also mark the first battlegrounds where the Democratic advantages among minority voters may meaningfully affect the battle for House control.
The most competitive districts are more white than the national average
One of the most striking aspects of the 2018 landscape is how few of the highly contested seats contain large numbers of nonwhite voters. Of the 14 Republican-held seats that CNN rates as tilting toward Democrats, the minority share of the population exceeds the national average of about 38% in just the Southern California open seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Darrell Issa.
In the 29 Republican-held toss-up seats, minorities exceed their national share of the population in just 11. Those seats are entirely situated across the Sun Belt: challenges to Republican incumbents Walters, Jeff Denham, Steve Knight and Rohrabacher in California; Carlos Curbelo in Miami; Culberson in Houston; and open seats in California, Florida, New Mexico and North Carolina.
The relative shortage of competitive seats with substantial minority populations underscores the structural hurdle Democrats face in the House from the concentration of nonwhite voters inside large metropolitan areas where the party is already strong. Already, about two-thirds of the seats Democrats currently hold have more minority voters than the national average, while fully four-fifths of the GOP-held seats are more white than the national average.
Compounding the Democrats’ challenge this year, Hispanics represent the largest minority population in almost all the competitive Republican-held districts (North Carolina excepted) and Democrats remain concerned that turnout among them won’t be nearly as high as they have hoped after all the provocations from Trump.
The battlegrounds are also older than the rest of the country
The nature of the House battlefield also dilutes another Democratic advantage: the party’s edge among younger voters, particularly in the Trump era.
The NPR/Marist Poll released late last week, for instance, found that exactly two-thirds of those ages 18 to 29 disapproved of Trump’s performance, and nearly as many indicated they intend to vote for Democrats. But the CNN demographic analysis found that the median age exceeds the national level (almost 38 years of age) in 30 of the 43 Republican-held districts rated as toss-ups or better for the Democrats.
That’s a stark contrast with the House districts Democrats now hold, almost three-fifths of which are younger than the national average, largely because of the party’s reliance on minority-centered districts with many children and young adults. (Three-fifths of current Republican seats are older than the national average.)
“Democrats have a serious structural problem in where these people are located,” notes Jacobson. “Gerrymandering is a small part of the story; it is much more where people choose to live. If you look at Democratic demographics, African-Americans, Hispanics, young people, gay people, they all hang out in cities. They are attracted to big metropolitan areas.”
Tumblr media
The remaining two tiers of Republican-held seats at the periphery of the Democrats’ target list would require the party to push even further into blue-collar and Trump-friendly territory.
CNN rates 20 Republican-held seats as leaning toward the GOP, which means they are competitive but Republicans are favored to hold them. Of these, 16 have fewer minorities than average, 13 are older than average, 10 are below the average education level and nine lag the median income. In 2016, Trump carried all but two of these districts (the seats near San Antonio and Dallas held by Reps. Will Hurd and Pete Sessions, respectively).
CNN classifies another 25 Republican-held seats as likely Republican, meaning that they are still potentially competitive but are considered long-shot chances for Democrats. Of these, 20 have fewer minorities than average, 18 are older than the national average, 15 lag the average education level and 14 trail the national median income. Trump won all of them except the two held by Republicans David Valadao in California’s Central Valley and John Katko in upstate New York.
Still, for all these obstacles, the history of big midterm elections — like 1994, 2006 and 2010 — is that the party out of the White House usually wins some seats that had largely been considered safe. That’s often because the incumbent takes the contest much less seriously than their counterparts in the toss-up districts. Republican Rep. Rob Woodall’s seat in Georgia’s Atlanta suburbs, now classified as likely Republican but drawing late interest from both sides, is one that could fit that description this year. Late Republican ad buys in unexpected seats, such as a district in South Carolina, raise that possibility too.
The only Democratic-held seats that CNN rates as toss-up or better for the GOP are two open seats in Minnesota: Both districts are older, more white and less educated than the national average. Six other Democratic-held seats are considered competitive but leaning or likely for the party to hold: Of these, four are above the national average in diversity, and four are below the average median income. Four are better-educated than the average.
All these patterns point toward the same conclusion: Democrats can likely win back the House, albeit with little margin for error, primarily by exploiting white-collar unease with Trump. But to generate big gains, they will also need to overcome the formidable defenses that Trump and the GOP have built beyond the nation’s largest metropolitan areas.

Many times one rejoices to hear that some old favorite TV series or magazine, long gone, is returning. But then one is disappointed when the “revival” turns out to be exploiting the venerable name/title, seeking merely to appropriate a reputation it has not earned. My favorite excuse is, “This is Loathsome Tales as it would be if it started today.” Look, if the product is not what the familiar label implies, why not call it something else? It’s the old bait and switch. Titles like The Twilight Zone and Weird Tales denote distinct idioms of fantastic fiction, but when the “new versions” offer something else, I just go back and enjoy the real thing instead of the pretender. Well, the title Crypt of Cthulhu means exactly what it has always meant. This very issue proves that. You’ll find within it a new tale by Gary Myers, reviews of new books by Ramsey Campbell and James Wade, a new article about Clark Ashton Smith and another about August Derleth and Weird Tales, and more by Cryptic stalwarts like Darrell Schweitzer and Peter Cannon. Yes, it’s a shadow out of time! All this in a special “Jumbo-Double-Sized-Perfect-Bound” issue!

Pennsylvania & West Virginia residents indicted for heroin distribution operation
CLARKSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA – Jalisa L. Hawkins, of Duquesne, Pennsylvania, appeared this week before a federal magistrate judge to face charges involving a heroin distribution operation, United States Attorney Bill Powell announced.
Hawkins is one of nine named defendants facing heroin distribution charges after being indicted on March 6, 2018 by a federal grand jury sitting in Clarksburg.  Those named in the 20-count indictment include:
Jalisa L. Hawkins, also known as “Ashley,” age 28, of Duquesne, Pennsylvania
Chad Juan M. Neal, also known as “CJ,” age 24, of Duquesne, Pennsylvania
Hunter Queen, age 22, of Nutter Fort, West Virginia
Alexander D. Barnett, age 23, of Flemington, West Virginia
David W. Lipscomb, age 35, of Bridgeport, West Virginia

The FCC is about to give massive internet service providers the power to divide the internet. It is at risk of becoming unrecognizable. A vital global utility that has been a boon to creative and economic freedom for people around the world may be turned into a twisted land of tolls and corporate control.
Those who control the network control the future
The stakes are high. The internet now touches every town, every city, and every single one of us — whether we use it or not. Those who control the network control the future.
The FCC is the current venue for this fight, but Congress will eventually intervene. As telecom expert Susan Crawford argues, the FCC is “being outrageous” to force Congress’ involvement. And both net-neutrality advocates and the telecom industry have asked for lawmakers to act. Advocates believe a law will make net neutrality more durable. But ISPs are betting they’ll be able to write the bill — because they’ve paid for the opportunity.
In March, we published a story that showed contributions from the ISP industry to members of Congress who voted to repeal a landmark FCC privacy rule, opening the door to the sale of customer data. It was one of our most popular stories of the year, and many of you asked why we only published contributions to some members of Congress. Incidentally, every one of the 265 members who voted for the measure in March were Republicans. And many of those same members endorse the effort to end net neutrality.
But it’s fair to want to see monetary influence across all of Congress. While it is clear that alignment with the ISPs is currently drawn along party lines, the industry’s attempt to gain favor with lawmakers is not partisan. Entrenched telecommunications companies liberally spread money and attention to everyone who holds office. Sometimes that influence comes in the form of lavish parties with Olympic athletes and lobbyists, but consistently it comes in the form of contributions to campaigns.
It’s impossible to quantify the overall influence of this powerful industry, but we can chart some of it. Below you will find contributions to individual members of Congress and those members’ leadership PACs, from 1989 to the present day. This money came from the telecommunication industry’s own PACs, their individual members or employees or owners, and those individuals’ immediate families. This data was prepared for The Verge by The Center for Responsive Politics: an independent, non-partisan nonprofit research group that tracks money in US politics and its effect on elections and public policy.
