Remedies & Revenge

🦋 A 500 word drabble I wrote based on this incident from @sallowsdiary. Featuring my girlie @ravenwind-75

Homesickness had compelled Aurélie to skip breakfast that morning, opting instead to read a book in the relative peace and quiet of the transfiguration courtyard. Compared to Beauxbatons, dining at Hogwarts was a chaotic affair in which all notions of decorum and civility were trumped for prank-pulling, drink-spiking and other such inter-house hostilities that would’ve never been tolerated at her old school. 

Only days ago, one Slytherin boy, presumably having lost some bet to the Gryffindors, had taken his meal wearing a full regalia of maroon and gold, glowering like was moments away from murdering the next person to so much as glance at him while the lions hooted and hollered from across the hall. After that, Aurélie had started taking her meals outside, where the giant oak and the pleasant sound of birdsong served as far better dining companions than murderous Slytherins and obnoxious Gryffindors.

Today, she was just finishing another chapter of "Hogwarts: a History", trying to gauge whether the school had always been full of eccentrics or whether she'd just lucked out and transferred during the Great Year of Chaos, when the sound of someone wailing her name diverted her attention. 

'Johanna?' Aurélie set her book down as her new friend Johanna Newman came stumbling across the courtyard, her hands covering the bottom half of her face. 'Are you alright?'

Garbling some incoherent reply, Johanna launched herself onto the bench where Aurélie was sitting, gestured frantically at her mouth and, with a very exaggerated lisp, cried, 'Thisth isth thso embarrathing!'  

Aurélie squinted at the girl’s mouth, where she was surprised to find a tiny golden goblet dangling from her lower lip.  

'Er, it's...lovely?' she offered, wondering whether tiny lip adornments were just another weird Hogwarts custom nobody had thought to warn her about. 

'Lovely?' Johanna wailed. 'Oh, I'm going to get that Thebastian Thallow!'  

‘Uh, who?'

‘Thebastian!' She took her fists angrily, a slightly unhinged gleam in her eyes. 'Actsth like he'sth Merlin's gift to withard kind, tho-called self proclaimed king of prankths!’ 

When Aurélie only looked at her blankly, Johanna explained, 'He'sth the Thlytherin with all the frecklesth.'

Ah, him. The wannabe Gryffindor. 

'Take thisth as a friendly warning, Aurélie,' she continued fervently, her lisp getting worse with her mounting frustration, ‘if he ever tries talking to you, thsave yourthelf and run for the hillths!’

'Duly noted,' Aurélie replied, eyeing the teeny tiny goblet with a mix of amusement and admiration; whatever charm Thebastian had used to shrink the cup and get it stuck to her lip was certainly a good one, though she dared not admit it to Johanna in her current state. Instead, she slipped her wand from her robes and gestured at the offending facial trinket. 

'I can help you remove it, if you like?’ she offered. ‘Unless you'd like to start a new fashion trend? I can see it taking off, honestly.’

‘Remove pleathe,’ sighed Johanna, pouting with obvious difficulty. ‘Then I'm going to plan my revenge!’

Wassily Kandinsky Painting 'Murnau mit Kirche II' Recovered by Holocaust Victims' Heirs Sells For $44.55M

A painting by Russian Modernist Wassily Kandinsky that once belonged to victims of the Nazi Holocaust, has sold for £37.2 million ($44.55 million) at Sotheby's in London.

Part of the auction house's Modern & Contemporary Evening Auction on Wednesday, "Murnau mit Kirche II" ("Murnau with Church II"; 1910), was the most expensive sale of the night, as well as a new auction record for the artist.

A previous world record for a work by Kandinsky was set in 2017 with the sale of his "Bild mit weissen Linien" for £33 million ($39.7 million), the auction house said.

"Kandinsky's Murnau period came to define abstract art for future generations," Helena Newman, Chairman of Sotheby's Europe and Worldwide Head of Impressionist & Modern Art, said in a statement.

"The appearance of such an important painting -- one of the last of this period and scale remaining in private hands -- is a major moment for the market and for collectors," she said.

Kandinsky was living with his lover Gabriele Münter and fellow artist friends in Murnau, Bavaria, when he painted "Murnau mit Kirche II" --

Inspired by the local landscape during a cycling trip. Münter herself wrote an inscription on the painting's stretcher.

The painting has a long history. It was sold at auction as property from the collection of prominent Berlin collectors, husband-and-wife Johanna Margarete and Siegbert Stern, after it was finally restored to the family's surviving heirs last year by the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Stern family photographs depict the Kandinsky hanging in the dining room of their family home, Villa Stern in Potsdam. But following the rise of the Nazis in 1933 and her husband's death two years later, Johanna Margarete fled to the Netherlands and was declared stateless.

According to family papers, the Kandinsky -- among other works -- was taken to the Netherlands and assumed to have passed to a dealer who plundered Jewish assets in the occupied country, before Johanna Margarete's deportation and death in Auschwitz in 1944, Sotheby's catalog said. It was later sold to the Van Abbemuseum by another dealer in 1951.

Talking about its history, Newman said the painting's restitution has finally allowed people to "rediscover the place of the Sterns and their collection in the glittering cultural milieu of 1920s Berlin."

The proceeds of the sale will be shared between the 13 surviving Stern descendents and will also fund further research into tracking down their family's extensive art collection, the statement added.

Another big sale on the night was Edvard Munch's "Dans på stranden (Reinhardt-frisen)" or "Dance on the Beach (The Reinhardt Frieze)," which sold for £16.94 million ($20.3 million).

I was really pleasantly surprised by how good this book was. It looks like a superhero book but the vibe was more Fringe to me. Fringe meets Letterkenny. And it was really well written! Another book with a good twist. I highly recommend this one.

I kept this one because it's highly praised, and I ended up loving it. It probably would have been a 5 star read, except I thought the epilogue really undercut the effectiveness of the rest of the book.

TASK TWO: FAMILY TREE/CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS

FAMILY — BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER

John Reid (Liam Neeson) — Father

Jamie has always been a daddy’s girl, finding far more in common with him than her mother. With many creative talents, John left for New York City after the divorce and never looked back. Leaving behind his life as owner of the Harborside Inn, he instead pursued a career in film and photography. Even now, him and Jamie are close and take trips to visit one another as often as humanly possible. 

Patricia Reid (Jane Seymour) — Mother

Patricia was born into a religious household and was sure to instil a lot of the same beliefs within her own. She has a striking personality and a very strong sense of right and wrong. Although she means well, she can often be a little overbearing and protective. She absolutely adores Jamie and her granddaughter, though managing the Inn is easily one of her top priorities. 

Kennedy Reid (Abigail Breslin) — Daughter

Kennedy is Jamie’s second-born, though in a lot of ways, she feels like her first. Daughter of Jamie and her ex-husband, she remains close to both parents despite the divorce. She has a bright and energetic personality, reminding Jamie of herself in so many ways. She absolutely loves motherhood, but often worries about being too much like her own.

The Great Wonder (UTP) — Son

Product of a teenage pregnancy, Jamie’s son was taken from her after only five minutes on Earth. To this day, she holds a lot of resentment towards her mother for forcing her to give him up for adoption. Not a day goes by that she doesn’t sit and wonder who he is or what he’s doing. 

Quinn Newman (Elizabeth Olsen) — Cousin

Related to Jamie on her father’s side of the family, Quinn is like the younger sibling Jamie has always wanted. Despite their rather large age gap, these two have always gotten along. From life advice, to taking the kitchen by storm, they are always onto their next adventure and have helped each other in a lot of ways. 

FRIENDS — THE FAMILY YOU CHOOSE

Johanna Malcom (Bethany Joy Lenz) — Best Friend

Johanna is Jamie’s ride or die. In a lot of ways, she is more like a sister than a best friend. Having first met in church choir, this duo has been inseparable ever since. 

Marcus Turner (Jesse Williams) — Best Friend

After meeting during one of Marcus’ summers in Mystic, these two became quick friends, bonding over their travels back and forth between Connecticut and New York. He is the closest thing she has to a brother and somebody she can always rely on. 

Camila Flores Garcia (Jessica Alba) — Mom Friend

Although she is one of her newer friends, Jamie can’t think of a life without Cam in it. Nobody else in her life can relate to the struggles of motherhood like she can, or make her feel better about her parenting skills.

ROMANTIC — THE ONE(S) THAT GOT AWAY

Damien Shaw (Bryan Greenberg) — Baby Daddy

Jamie and Damian met during one of her summer trips to New York City. He was her first love and the first person to make her feel a desire to be intimate. After finding out that she was pregnant, Jamie’s mom sent her on the first plane back to Mystic without any word to her boyfriend about the baby or her departure.

Samuel Brennan — Ex-Husband/Kennedy’s Father

Her partner of over a decade and Kennedy’s father. They have been divorced for about two years, though they remain in contact for their daughter’s sake.

𝐈. Magnolia Gehling was born to two very strict, very religious parents. She hadn’t agreed with their views, not truly believing in anything for the majority of her life. All she cared about was having fun, and she had her on and off fun with a fellow high schooler — Bartlomiej Wojcik.

𝐈𝐈. When she became pregnant with her first son, Adam, she was horribly devastated. She never wanted to be a mother in her life, especially at sixteen. When she went to her mother for comfort, she was told that she wasn’t allowed to abort the child. Nor was she allowed to give him up for adoption. She had to live with her ‘mistake’, in her mother’s words. When she told Bartek, it was a shock to him  — but the two were going to work through it. He defended Magnolia when she got harassed at school for her teen pregnancy and it just worked.

𝐈𝐈𝐈. Magnolia had to drop out of high school when she had Adam, not able to balance being a mother and go to school at the same time. The stress sent her into the world of drugs. Bartek’s parents wanted him to stay out of the lives of her and Adam, seeing that they weren’t married.

𝐈𝐕. Cult life was the best option that made itself apparent to Magnolia. She was nineteen years old, the sermons were actually something she found herself believing in. And she took Adam away the first chance she got. They forced her out of her drug addiction, forcing her to quit them cold turkey. There, she became a healer. No experience needed.

𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐏 𝐌𝐄 𝐅𝐀𝐈𝐓𝐇

𝐈. Her second child came from Bartek as well  ——  despite being in the cult for three years at that point. They had a spot to meet at, in the woods outside of the Meadows compound. It ended with a pregnancy, leading her to get in trouble. She had no husband in the cult, so she was breaking rules.

𝐈𝐈. Years after Drew was born, Magnolia found herself interested in Abraham Huber. There was no reason to act on it  —  while charismatic, he was married to Elizabeth Lancaster. The fact that he was the firstborn son of Raymond Huber himself didn’t mean anything to her , she was just interested. But his so-called divorce and arrest eventually lead to them together.

𝐈𝐈𝐈. Both Adam and Drew had left by the time she married Abraham. It was incredibly devastating to the woman, leading to a descent into madness that was irreversible. Abraham gave her the conservatory, two children to try to cope with her children leaving. She could only focus on her children being gone, the children barely easing the pain.
