I enjoyed The King way more than I expected to. Timmy’s performance was impressive - not that he hasn’t always been, but this was a whole new level that I hadn’t expected to see from him and I am into it. I’d like to see more of it.

Joel Edgerton was the other standout performance. Pattinson was ridiculous and reminded me of a cartoonish Lestat. Lily Rose Depp had a very small role, but her performance was also quite good. 

The premiere and red carpet experience was kinda nuts, but not as bad as I was fearing. Timmy did create a mass security hysteria when he ran across the street with the bagels, though. Those poor dudes. Timmy’s family was there and his sister seems like she’s just as much of a hyper-bean as he is. Saw her scream LRD’s name when she spotted her, then run up to scream-flail-hug her. She also flail-hugged her mom, so maybe that’s just how she excitedly greets people. Some other cute Chalamet family moments with LRD, as well. His dad was taking selfies with fans and it was hilarious.

Also spotted: Greta Gerwig, Patti Smith, Margarita Levieva, Gina Gershon, John Robert Magaro (of OITNB), Alysia Reiner (also of OTINB), other people I can’t remember anymore.

Amid the madness of Golden Globes weekend — think parties, parties, and more parties — the annual British Academy of Film and Television Arts Tea Party in Los Angeles is a haven of calm, accompanied by an assortment of scones. Obviously.

And the event was even declared a selfie-free zone. Shockingly, people followed the rule.

Ryan Gosling, Tracee Ellis Ross in a floral Polite dress, Amy Adams in Dolce & Gabbana, and Emma Stone in Diane von Furstenberg all stopped by. The spread was fancy: three types of tea plus wine, Welsh rarebit, samosas, English cucumber sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, lemon tarts, and mini-eclairs.

Justin Timberlake came solo. Ron Howard sneaked up behind his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard and patiently waited for her to finish talking a photo.

Outlander star Caitriona Balfe, who hails from Ireland, had a leg up on L.A.’s suddenly stormy weather.

“Yeah, I think the last three times I’ve been in L.A., it’s rained. But driving here, I know how to drive. I just don’t know about the other people on the road when it’s raining. Meanwhile, Loving’s Joel Edgerton said he thinks Casey Affleck is a shoo-in for that award.

“On an ego level, it feels good,” he said of his nomination in the same category. “At the same time, it’s not lost on me how it works. Only one person can win, and I’ve seen Manchester by the Sea. I understand — Casey’s performance, plus the story and the screenplay and the way it’s executed. I’m just happy to be part of that conversation. I’m happy to be part of that nomination group or whatever. But to me, it’s not about a competition or about going, ‘Maybe I’m going to win this thing.’ I understand the way the cards are going to fall.”

What is Photography?

This presentation made me think about the magic of photography, and how it is almost taken for granted today- The invention of the camera was not that long ago and since then it has had a huge impact on art, science, the criminal justice system- and most importantly to me- the way we think about who is important in history and society and which stories are most important to record. Prior to the accessibility of photography, only the rich and upper class would be able to have some access to recording themselves and their lives. While the amount of photography collected each day seems vast- for me, the vast amounts of it captures life- captures details that matter to individuals- gives you insight into the worlds of millions, who previously would have been ignored, or considered unworthy of history.

Memento mori- mortality, vulnerability- A photograph frozen forever of something that is impermanent.

All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt. Susan Sontag

Photography used to only be available to the rich ( usually white westerners)  there were the people recording and creating the record of history- doesn’t give a broad spectrum of life- only life of the upper classes. Now that smartphones with camera are so widespread- and the price of a camera is dramatically less- everything can be documented. A wider view of the world?
