Hard Kill (2020)

Hard Kill probably doesn't deserve the dismal rating I'm giving it. I had to watch something new and it was getting late. I picked this movie based on its 98-minute running time and regretted my choice instantly.

“The Pardoner” (Sergio Rizzuto) has acquired a revolutionary artificial intelligence which will allow him to topple world governments and kill willy-nilly. Unfortunately, he needs Donovan Chalmers (Bruce Willis) to grant him access. With Chalmers’ daughter (Lala Kent) held hostage and an exchange scheduled, the world will be under The Pardoner’s control unless the group of mercenaries Chalmers has hired - Derek (Jesse Metcalfe), Sasha (Natalie Eva Marie), Dash (Swen Temmel), and Harrison (Jon Galanis) - can take the villain down.

The summary makes it sound like Bruce Willis is the film's star. He isn’t. The quartet of mercenaries are our protagonists. Unfortunately, none of them are even mildly interesting. I suppose Natalie Eva Marie fares best out of all of the performers, all of whom can handle the physical stunts (there aren’t a lot and none will impress) but have no charisma. 80% of the dialogue sounds like grunts uttered by someone trying to get inducted into the Brotherhood of Iron as we roll our eyes.

You don’t care about the heroes, their relationships or their feeble character arcs. The plot? Merely an excuse to have people shoot each other. The artificial intelligence could be swapped out with just about anything from nuclear codes to a Swiss bank account.

The villain? He keeps going on about how greed is ruining the world and how the MacGuffin will fix that. This belief naturally puts him at odds with the mercenaries (which is good writing) but you never buy his conviction. Maybe if he was a little bit more concerned with money he could’ve afforded actual ammunition - instead of the pellets of red dust we see fired in multiple shots - or someone to get the password for him so he wouldn’t have to put his own life in danger to retrieve it.

Directed by Matt Eskandari (also responsible for Survive the Night, which also featured a tired Bruce Willis), this movie is cheap. The mercs defend the fort while The Pardoner and his cronies try to get inside. Most of the action is set in some run-down building (Bruce Willis costs $1 million a day and they must’ve needed him for at least two so they needed to cut costs). Even as a siege thriller, this fails. You never get a good understanding of the place’s layout. We never feel any tension as the heroes’ resources dwindle. It’s a continuous stream of non-thrills.

This is a bad movie but lowest-rating-possible bad? I'll defend my choice. There is no passion on-screen. This movie does nothing new. Hard Kill has no reason to exist and contains nothing memorable whatsoever. The people who waste their time with it could’ve spent it watching ANYTHING else. There are so many good movies I haven't yet seen. Instead, I chose Hard Kill and feel lesser for it. (November 19, 2020)

The final piece of the puzzle has been layed down to complete this marvellous franchise story which has been told brilliantly by the Russo brothers. My final thoughts, damn there are so many things I need to say in such a short time, but this film has put me through an emotional rollercoaster and it paid off. I got emotional when I saw Stan Lee last cameo appearance, but I hope enjoyed making the film. After watching this I have many questions to ask about the future of the MCU. We know that Spider-Man Far from Home will be the aftermath of Endgame and the end of Phase 3, but how will Peter Parker feel about losing his mentor, Tony Stark? Will the Guardians of the Galaxy be able to find the 2014 Gamora with the help of Thor? Will Captain Marvel stay a little longer on earth to defend it? Are there any time rifts caused by the Avengers that will have to be fix by Doctor Strange, Black Panther, or the next team of Avengers? Will there be a new Iron Man in the future? And will we be able to see the X-Men and Fantastic Four appear in Phase 4? Extraction (2020)

Extraction excels when it’s killing people. All kinds of bad guys get skewered, blown away, or killed in ways that’ll make you grimace in delight. The way the camera moves through the combat sequences will leave you breathless and drenched in sweat. The story and the characters, however, are bland and generic.

Ovi Mahajan (Rudhraksh Jaiswal), the son of an incarcerated Indian crime lord, is kidnapped by his father’s rival, Amir Asia (Priyanshu Painyuli). Tasked with getting the boy back - at any cost - Saju Rav (Randeep Hooda) hires black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth). When Tyler realizes Saju has no intention of paying him, he’s stuck with the hostage while both sides begin closing in.

There’s nothing wrong with indulging in a bit of silver screen ultra-violence once in a while. The mercenaries we see are pros, the kind who can laugh at 12:1 odds and there’s no shortage of greasy dirtbags just asking to get shot in the head or “raked” to death. Tyler gets pretty creative as he dispatches one enemy after another, which is a great deal of fun if that’s what you’re in the mood for. It’s hard to imagine viewers wouldn’t be, as the opening scene sets up how bloody this ordeal is going to get. It’s viscerally satisfying and technically impressive too. We’re talking about long tracking shots that move from corridors to rooms to vehicles. It can’t have been easy with all of the moving parts that go into well-coordinated action scenes but you can’t tell. The camera's viewpoint helps amp up the already tense scenes.

The film’s got no mercy… except when it does. Extraction is the kind of picture whose central character doesn’t bat an eye when he’s puncturing skulls by the dozen but deep down is a tormented, painkiller-addicted, alcoholic mourning the son he tragically lost years ago so hard he almost hopes each mission will be his last. You know exactly what his relationship with Ovi will be like. Just a few minutes in, you’ll have the whole movie figured out. It succumbs to clichés it could’ve easily avoided. The script's laziness prevents you from fully embracing the film as anything but a carousel of carnage.

At least Extraction delivers when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, chases, and broken bones. This permits you to tolerate the characters and story you’ve seen dozens of times before and are not given any kind of novel twist whatsoever. The lack of substance means it’s a bit too long but the performances are quite good so you won’t be bored. The global pandemic is the best thing that could’ve happened to this film. It would’ve pleased a decent amount of audience members on the big screen but probably wouldn’t have made ripples. In a time when there’s nothing new to see, AND you’re seeing it “for free” at home? It’s worth checking out. (July 25, 2020)
