Chick Corea

Biography Born Armando Anthony Corea in Chelsea, Massachusetts on June 12, 1941, Chick was studying piano by age four and enjoyed a childhood home filled with the sounds of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell, Lester Young and Horace Silver - not to mention the likes of Beethoven and Mozart, who inspired Chick's compositional instincts. Chick's earliest compositions were recorded during one of his first professional stints, three years with trumpeter Blue Mitchell ('64-'66), which led up to the pianist's first project as a leader, Tones For Jones Bones. Early gigs with the likes of Willie Bobo, Cal Tjader, Herbie Mann and Mongo Santamaria instilled a love of Latin music, prevalent in much of Chick's early work. After a year accompanying Sarah Vaughan, he rose to true prominence in the jazz world by joining Miles Davis' band playing electric piano. In his years with Miles, Chick played on the groundbreaking classic fusion recording Bitches Brew and In a Silent Way. From there, Chick formed his own avant-garde improvisational group, Circle, with bassist Dave Holland, drummer Barry Altschul and sax man Anthony Braxton.

In 1971, after three years of Circle, Chick changed his focus. Jazz has never been quite the same since the birth of Return to Forever. The early edition of that group (which featured the young Stanley Clarke on bass) was a softer, samba-flavored ensemble featuring Flora Purim on vocals, her husband Airto on drums and reed man Joe Farrell. After two albums with this lineup and a few solo piano released on the side, Chick plugged in and went the electronic fusion route, incorporating into RTF the firepower of drummer Lenny White and guitarist Bill Connors. While Corea was forging a unique style on the Moog synthesizer, RTF (with Al Di Meola replacing Connors) spearheaded the mid-70's fusion movement with such innovative albums as Where Have I Known You Before, the Grammy-winning No Mystery and Romantic Warrior. When RTF disbanded in 1975, Corea delved into a diverse series of recordings -- electronic ensembles, solo piano, classical music and high-powered acoustic duos -- with artists like Herbie Hancock and Gary Burton. Other Corea projects leading up to his mid-80's formation of the Elektric Band were the Grammy winning Leprechaun, My Spanish Heart and Musicmagic, (the latter of which was a new Return to Forever project with vocalist Gayle Moran) followed by Mad Hatter, RTF Live, and work with Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, Chaka Khan and Nancy Wilson, among countless others. In 1992, Chick realized a lifelong goal, along with manager Ron Moss, forming Stretch Records, a label committed to stretching musical boundaries (like its founder) and focusing more on freshness and creativity than on musical style. Among its early releases have been projects by Bob Berg, John Patitucci, Eddie Gomez and Robben Ford. "My interests change and vary as the years go along, with different emphases all the time," Chick muses. "The more I play in different situations, the more possibilities I discover for what I can do. Rather than think in terms of my music developing, I choose to bask in the glow of one thing for a few minutes, then let it go." In 1996, as the last release for GRP Records, Ron Moss produced Music Forever & Beyond a 5 disc box set of selected works from 1964-1996. Corea states, "The single emotion that this box set has left me with is a profound feeling of gratitude and thankfulness to have had the opportunity and the honor to create music with so many inspiring musicians through the years." After his relationship with GRP ended in 1996, Stretch Records became a subsidiary of Concord Records and Chick decided to be part of Stretch's artist roster. His first release on Stretch was a tribute to pianist Bud Powell. Therefore, it was suitable to contact Roy Haynes to be a part of this project, as Haynes had performed with Powell in the early 60's. Remembering Bud Powell was met with much excitement due, in part, to the participants that Corea had on the project. Along with Haynes were Kenny Garrett, Joshua Redman, Wallace Roney and Christian McBride. Corea said, "All the musicians poured themselves so unselfishly and creatively into this project…we all felt Bud's lasting inspiration during the recording and touring." That same year, Chick released a recording with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with Bobby McFerrin as conductor. This was their 2nd recording for Sony Classical, entitled The Mozart Sessions. Their first duet recording, Play, was honored with a Grammy Award. Also, in 1997 Chick teamed up with Gary Burton. It had been over 20 years since their Crystal Silence duet recording and the two thought it was time to do another. Native Sense - The New Duets was released on Stretch Records and gave Chick his 9th Grammy Award in 1998. Moving forward is something at which Chick is well adept. Toward the end of 1997, Chick decided to once again form a new group - a base in which he could once again perform on acoustic piano. The band's self-titled debut release was a live recording at the Blue Note club in New York City. Chick's strategy behind the recording was to try to capture the band's sound and feel as it is in a live performance. "When we play to an audience, as opposed to playing in a recording studio, there's never a thought of playing perfectly or making no mistakes," Chick comments, "so the music flows more freely and there comes a comfort in stretching out. So what you hear on that recording is the unedited performances." Those shows generated so much enthusiasm that the veteran bandleader took another leap, after the initial release of Origin - Live at the Blue Note. In 1998, Chick released the six-disc set A Week at the Blue Note. The boxed set, featuring music played during three of the four evenings that heralded the debut of "Origin," caught the band in all its spontaneously combustible glory. The sextet took on Miles Davis' "Four", Thelonious Monk's "Blue Monk", "Straight, No Chaser" and "Four in One", Bud Powell's "Tempus Fugit", Charlie Parker's "Bird Feathers", the Rodgers-Hart standard "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" and Corea's "Matrix", "Hand Me Down" and "Sifu", not to mention alternate versions of tunes heard on the first album. In the summer of 1999, Chick released Origin's 3rd recording, Change. This was recorded within the relaxed confines of the home Chick shares with singer and wife Gayle Moran in Florida. Chick and the band went to work on a set of material written specifically for Origin since the release of the debut. "The first record was a mishmash of all kind of stuff; old tunes, standards, jam-session tunes and new written music, whereas Change is focused on music specifically written for a known group that has become an entity. With this record, I wanted to try more thorough writing with the band. Everyone responded to it very well." Change brings Origin one step closer to Chick's conception of a dream ensemble, a group of musicians unusually attuned to each other's playing, united under the like-minded goal of bringing to life the music of a leader able to compose and arrange challenging material with specific instrumental voices in mind. Chick completed a recording with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Corea Concerto, for Sony Classical, released October 1999. Back in the early '80s, Chick was introduced to Mozart's music by Friedrich Gulda. Since then, Chick was determined to write a Piano Concerto of his own. This was completed in 1984. Over a 10-year period, Chick performed the piece with various orchestras in New York, Japan and Italy but had not had the opportunity to record it. In 1998, Chick was invited to perform in Vienna with the London Philharmonic Orchestra for a special 1999 Easter event. This concert opened up an opportunity to record the Concerto. After a successful evening in Vienna, Chick, group members from Origin and the London Philharmonic Orchestra went back to London to do the recording. The recording features Piano Concerto No.1 - (dedicated to the spirit of religious freedom) and a new version of Chick's tune Spain (arrangement for Sextet & Orchestra). "I chose almost the exact same instrumentation as the Mozart piano concerto orchestrations for my concerto. I figured that I could perform the Mozart and my own piece with the same size orchestra, and that would be a good practical start for me. So, with the spirit and sound of Mozart's piano concerto music, I wrote this piece and dedicated it to the spirit of religious freedom which, for me, is on the same level as the creative freedom that is the basic right of all people." Chick also speaks about why he chose to do a new version of Spain: "If there is anyone song that listeners seem to know me best by, I guess that song is "Spain," as I get the most requests for it and hear it mentioned more than any of the others. I wrote the song in 1971 and played it frequently with RTF and many other bands of mine. I reharmonized the theme and made a brand-new arrangement of it for the Akoustic Band trio in 1988, and have generally turned the song inside out through the years. This is a final visit to "Spain" in grand fashion and with a tip of the hat to the art cultures of Spain, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and New York."

 Luka Modric.

 Who is currently the best 35-year-old footballer in international football? Zlatan? Cristiano?

 Or Luka Madrid? On September 9, he turns 36. According to Spanish media, Real Madrid and Modric have reached an agreement for another contract year at 21.7 million euros (- Modric confirmed at the UEFA press conference last night).

 Adam Lallana, who lost the Champions League final against Real Madrid with Liverpool in 2018, said in an interview about that evening yesterday: "I didn't dare come close to Modric; I felt like a rabbit in full light ".

 Modric was born in 1985 in Zadar, a port city on the Adriatic Sea. In the fall of 1991, Zadar was the scene of one of the very first skirmishes in the Yugoslav war.

 As a little boy, Modric was mostly raised by his grandfather in Modrici, 28 miles outside of Zadar - Modric's parents both worked in a clothing factory during the day.

 However, in September 1991, Modric's grandfather, along with a group of his friends, was gunned down in the street by Serbian rebels who chased Croats out of Zadar.

 Liverpool can still take out "The Royal". But then the Reds must be able to set the pace. Because once Modric can control the rhythm of his dance himself, all commentators can drop their microphones. Then it's over

 The Modric family fled and lived in a hotel miles away for years. “I learned to play football in the parking lot of the hotel,” Modric said later.

 Luka Modric is a somewhat atypical "Balkan boy". He does not profile himself. The war in Yugoslavia made one outgoing and social, the other introverted and withdrawn. Modric belongs to the second category.

 Luka Modric is what Andres Iniesta was at Barcelona at the time, but just that little bit more eye-catching. It's in the outside on the right, probably.

 Rather, Modric is "The Cruyff of the Balkans".

 Authors Vicente Azpitarte and Jose Manuel Puertas describe in Modric's biography how he got this nickname.

 Modric made his debut in the Croatian national team on March 1, 2006 against Argentina. After that match, a fan gave Modric a shirt, an orange shirt, with number 14. A shirt of the Dutch national team, one like Cruijff wore at the 1974 World Cup.

 Anyone who sees Modric playing football involuntarily thinks of Johan Cruijff. The same flapping mane. That fabulous technique and that exceptional insight. Always available, always with an eye for the best solution, even though it sometimes looks simple.

 And their exterior, of course.

 "It's crazy how Johan Cruijff now lives on in the virtuoso of ... Real Madrid.

 At the end of March, Luka Modric became a record international for Croatia. 135 caps (136, now). His teammates honored their captain with a compilation video and a standing ovation. Modric broke. Tears rolled down his cheeks.

 Won the Champions League four times. Vice World Champion. Balloon d'Or 2018.

 Thibaut Courtois once described Modric in an interview with the English Sky Sports as: "The best".

 He is still the compass on which Real Madrid is sailing tonight.

SORROWFUL JONES

JULY 4, 1949

Sorrowful Jones is a remake of the 1934 Shirley Temple film, Little Miss Marker. In the film, a young girl is left with the notoriously cheap Sorrowful Jones (Bob Hope) as a marker for a bet. When her father does not return, he learns that taking care of a child interferes with his free-wheeling lifestyle. Lucille Ball plays a nightclub singer who is dating Sorrowful's boss. 

Although the official opening night in Hollywood took place on Independence Day 1949, it was premiered in New York City a month earlier, and seen in Australia on June 24, 1949.

Lucille Ball (Gladys) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in April 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon, which was not a success and was canceled after just 13 episodes. She died on April 26, 1989 at the age of 77. 

Ball's singing voice is provided by Annette Warren, who also sang for her in Fancy Pants and later provided the singing voice for Ava Gardner in Show Boat.  Her first screen dubbing was for Lured featuring Lucille Ball, although Warren did not dub Lucy’s voice. She provided the singing voice for Pepper (Iris Adrian) in the Bob Hope film The Paleface (1947). 

Bob Hope (Sorrowful Jones) was born Lesley Townes Hope in England in 1903. During his extensive career in virtually all forms of media he received five honorary Academy Awards. In 1945, Desi Arnaz was the orchestra leader on Bob Hope’s radio show. Ball and Hope did three other films together. He appeared as himself on the season 6 opener of “I Love Lucy.” He did a brief cameo in a 1964 episode of “The Lucy Show.”  He died in 2003 at age 100.

Mary Jane Saunders (Martha Jane) makes her film debut. She went on to do a season of TV’s “Tales of the Welles Fargo” (1960-61) and made two appearances on “My Three Sons”: one with William Frawley and one with William Demarest. 

William Demarest (Regret) is best remembered as Uncle Charlie on “My Three Sons,” a role created after the death of William Frawley. Demarest and Frawley appeared together on screen in The Farmer’s Daughter (1940). He was nominated for an Academy Award in the biography, The Jolson Story (1946). Demarest did two other films with Lucille Ball: Fugitive Lady (1934) and Don’t Tell The Wife (1937). He died in 1983 at age 91. 

Bruce Cabot (Big Steve) appeared with Lucille Ball in 1934′s Men of the Night. In 1950, he joined Hope and Ball once again in Fancy Pants.  His main claim to fame is rescuing Fay Wray from King Kong (1933).

Tom Pedi (Once Over Sam) did one season of the short-lived sitcom “Arnie” (1970-71).  He was in the 1980 remake of Little Miss Marker, upon which Sorrowful Jones is based. 

Paul Lees (Orville Smith) was blinded by enemy artillery during his service in World War II. He received 32 military decorations and ribbons, including the Legion of Merit. Despite his lack of vision, Lees learned to act and signed a contract with Paramount. He would memorize script dialog by having someone read it to him twice.

Houseley Stevenson (Doc Chesley) was a British-born character actor who had just finished doing The Paleface with Bob Hope. 

Ben Weldon (Big Steve’s Bodyguard) appeared on “I Love Lucy” as the thief who breaks in to the Ricardo apartment to steal “The Fur Coat” (ILL S1;E9).  He was seen in a season one episode of “The Lucy Show.” 

Emmett Vogan (Psychiatrist) did four movies with Lucille Ball previous to this one. In 1954 he played Mr. Bolton in The Long, Long Trailer. 

Thomas Gomez (Reardon) was an Oscar nominee for Ride the Pink Horse the previous year. In 1953 he was seen as Pasquale #2 on CBS’s “Life With Luigi”.  He did a 1964 episode of “My Three Sons” with William Demarest.

The film was made at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, with location shooting in New York City. This was Lucille Ball’s 70th film!

THE STORY

Sorrowful Jones (Bob Hope) is a New York bookie who keeps his operation hidden behind a trap door in a Broadway barber shop. He suffers a financial setback when a horse named Dreamy Joe, owned by gangster Big Steve Holloway (Bruce Cabot), unexpectedly wins a race and Jones has to pay all the bettors.

Jones learns that the race was fixed by Big Steve, who tells him about giving the horse a "speedball." It turns out Big Steve has informed all the bookies in his circle of friends about the fixed race, and demands a sum of $1,000 from each one of them in exchange for this information.

Before the next race, Jones learns Dreamy Joe will lose, but still takes bets on the horse from his customers. He even takes a bet from gambler Orville Smith (Paul Lees), who leaves his four-year-old daughter Martha Jane (Mary Jane Saunders) as collateral. Orville overhears a phone call where Big Steve reveals that the race is fixed, so he is killed by one of Big Steve's goons, Once Over Sam (Tom Pedi). Jones is forced to take care of Martha Jane and brings her home with him. 

The next day Jones gets help from his ex-girlfriend, burlesque performer Gladys O'Neill (Lucille Ball).

Big Steve tells Jones he is being investigated by the racing commission so he is quitting the race-fixing business. Big Steve plans to make one final race before he gets out of the game, where he is fixing it so that Dreamy Joe will win. He also transfers the ownership of the horse to Martha Jane, unaware that she is Orville's daughter. After the race, Big Steve will kill the horse by giving it a high dose of "speedball."

Jones tries to find Martha Jane's mother, but discovers she is dead. Gladys suggests that Jones give all of Dreamy Joe's winnings to Martha Jane to help her survive, or she will contact the police and tell them about Jones' operation. She has no knowledge of Big Steve's plan to fix the race.

Big Steve finds out that Martha Jane is Orville's daughter, so Jones must hide her to protect her from being killed. When hiding on a fire escape's landing, Martha Jane falls down and is seriously injured. In a coma, the little girl calls out for Dreamy Joe.

In order to save Martha Jane and wake her up, Jones and his partner Regret (William Demarest) steal the horse from Big Steve at the race track. They take it into the hospital room where Martha Jane lies. Martha Jane wakes up and the police find out that Big Steve is responsible for Orville's murder.

After Big Steve is arrested, Jones proposes to Gladys. The police want Martha Jane to be placed in an orphanage, but Jones and Gladys, who have married, decide to adopt the girl. They go away on their honeymoon together with their newly adopted daughter.

alrighty so I’ve been wanting to talk about my Guardians for a while now, and I started filling out some of those OC questions that I did for Fae and Ty a while back, but I keep forgetting to finish them, so I’m just gonna fill out a basic character profile for each of them that I reblogged a thousand years ago

Clothing Style: Does your character prefer dresses to pants? - he wears his hunter cloak kinda sideways cause he likes the way it feels draped over his shoulder. he never goes anywhere without wearing the lucky pants Cayde gave him. he prefers strong, metal chestpieces as opposed to cloth ones. AKA he dresses like McCree I mean a cowboy all the time :P

Character Traits: Using adjectives, list a few words to describe your character. - kind, helpful, likeable, skilled, VERY nerdy

Extensive Personality: Write a paragraph or two describing your character’s personality - Matt is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet in your life. people have a hard time believing he’s a Hunter because he’s so approachable and nice.

Flaws: What imperfections does your character’s personality have? - he spends a lot of time making sure other people are ok, which means he doesn’t spend a lot of time on himself. he’s pushed himself too far one too many times, which has earned him many scoldings from his Ghost. also he... tends to run into bad luck more often than not. Rocky swears that he was cursed by a Hive Wizard at some point because of how many unfortunate things have happened to him over time LOL

Ambitions & Dreams: Does your character have any hopes or dreams? - he’s extremely hopeful for the future and wants to make it a safe and happy place for everyone to live in (which is why he’s hardcore New Monarchy LOL)

Fears: Everyone is afraid of something. What’s your character afraid of? - not being able to save the people he cares most about

Hobbies: What does your character do in their spare time? - he collects stuff. mainly action figures and other collectibles related to his interests. he has a whole bunch of junk that he’s gotten from his excursions that he claims are really “valuable” but is actually just a bunch of junk that he keeps for sentimental reasons :P

Likes: Does your character have something specific they like or love? - he just really loves spending time with people and helping out in any way that he can, seriously this guy is so far from the stereotypical Hunter, Cayde swears the Traveler is just trolling with him LOL

Dislikes: What does your character hate? - INJUSTICE

Favorite food: This can go in likes, but if you want to split it up you can. - he’s a BIG coffee drinker. Cayde always wants to take him to bars and stuff, but he’d much rather have a cup o’ joe than alcohol hahaha

Least favorite food: Same goes for this. - he doesn’t like the Spicy Ramen. Cayde is disgusted :P

Motivation: What is driving your character through this story? - the same thing I wrote for his ambitions and dreams really, he’s trying to make the world a safe place for people to live in

Family: Does your character have any family or are they an orphan?  Do they belong to a tribe? - he doesn’t remember if he had a family before being reborn as a Guardian. he considers the Vanguard and his fireteam the closest thing to his family now :3

Relationship(s): Do they have a partner? A close friend? - Rocky is his best friend, and he knows Cayde pretty well too, of course. he also has a huuuuuuuuuge crush on Hawthorne hehe

Pet(s): Does your character have a companion? What’s their name? - just his Ghost. he’s a bit more serious than Matt and doesn’t really understand why Matt is so interested in all the junk he collects, but whatever. as long as Matt doesn’t bring anything living back with him, his Ghost is fine with it. he sounds like Travis Willingham.

Job: Does your character work or is he jobless? - he’s one of Cayde’s top favorite Hunters, so I’d say he’s pretty busy LOL

Weapon(s): Does your character use any weapons? What type? Do those weapons have names? - he uses scout rifles, snipers, hand cannons, and the occasional rocket launcher. his signature weapon is the Sunshot.

Magical Abilitie(s): Any special abilities? Telekinetic? Fireballs? Mind-reading? - he uses solar energy, so his special ability is the Golden Gun.

Vehicle(s): Does your character have a car? An airplane? - he goes back and forth between Sparrows, but his ship is the Symmetry Flight

You can make it as long or short as you want, it’s just to give you an idea of who your character is and where they come from. - when Matt first came to the City, he wasn’t sure if he’d make a good Guardian or not. all he knew is that he wanted to help. he saw the chaos outside of the City and knew he had to do something about it. and he was willing to do whatever he had to do to protect the City. that’s why he was one of the Guardians chosen to take out Crota, Oryx, the House of Wolves, and all the other threats that popped up leading to the Red War. that’s why he survived losing his Light. and that’s why he still fights to this day \o/

Extensive Personality: Write a paragraph or two describing your character’s personality - Rocky is the closest thing to a stereotypical jock that you can get in a Guardian. he’s always showing off and trying to make himself look good and win the adoration of everyone around him. but despite all that, he’s still dependable and willing to help out with whatever Zavala needs him to do (with a lot of grumbling and eye rolling of course).

Flaws: What imperfections does your character’s personality have? - like I said before, he’s pretty self-absorbed. he’s also kinda reckless and has been scolded by Zavala many times for breaking or knocking down something unnecessarily :P

Motivation: What is driving your character through this story? - he never got to meet Saint-14, but he’s Rocky’s main inspiration to being the best Titan he can possibly be. he looks up to Shaxx and Zavala too of course, but if he could one day be on the same level as Saint-14 was? he’d have it made, man...

Job: Does your character work or is he jobless? - he’s one of Zavala’s best Titans, and a favorite of Lord Shaxx in the Crucible, so yeah, he’s pretty busy

Weapon(s): Does your character use any weapons? What type? Do those weapons have names? - I haven’t created his file in D2 yet, so I have no idea what weapons he’s going to use! I’ll have to come back to fill this out once I’ve played through his file.

Rocky knew what he had to do. he had to outdo them all. but what started out as a selfish endeavor turned into a real passion for protecting the City. despite what he might say, Rocky has no problem doing whatever needs to be done to protect the City. and he’ll do it in the most Extra™ way he possibly can LOL.
