The Menzingers – Brooklyn Steel – November 23, 2018
On Friday night at Brooklyn Steel, the Menzingers gave everyone who’d been cooped up too long with family members on Thanksgiving the chance to cut loose and dance off any lingering tryptophan.

Album Review: Gregor Barnett - Don’t Go Throwing Roses in my Grave
Tumblr media
Don’t Go Throwing Roses In My Grave is the debut full length album out now on Epitaph Records from Gregor Barnett, who many know as vocals and guitar for The Menzingers, a punk rock band from Scranton, Pennsylvania. I have been a long time fan of The Menzingers, so I was very much excited when this album was announced. The first time I saw Barnett do anything solo was when he performed “Rodent” off of Rented World for Space Jam Sessions. I remember how incredible he was in that, so I knew we were in for a treat when he announced this album. Honestly, I’m surprised he hasn’t released a solo album sooner. However, the day has finally come. Don’t Go Throwing Roses in my Grave was produced by Will Yip, who also drummed on the record. Even though it's a solo album, all four members of The Menzingers were involved; Tom May took the photograph for the album cover, Eric Keen played bass and Joe Godino added percussion.
For long time fans of The Menzingers, I think you’re going to be very much into this record. Although it is a lot less punk and a lot more Americana than what you may be used to, there’s a level of comfort from hearing Barnett’s vocals that is just so soothing and wholesome. While he’s arguably written some of the best records in modern punk rock, this record feels like an introduction to Gregor Barnett in the absolute best way. The opening track, “Oh Lord, What Do You Know?” sets the tone for the rest of the record with the country-esque, Americana vibes. The second track, “Driving Through the Night”, is one of the best songs on this album. It’s a little bit more upbeat than the rest of the songs and more The Menzingers-esque. His vocals are so similar to something you’d hear on On the Impossible Past or Hello Exile. While it’s a more fast paced track than the others, it does not feel out of place on the album. Other great songs include “Talking to Your Tombstone”, “Hurry Me Down to Hades”, and the closing track, “Guest In Your House”. Overall, Don’t Go Throwing Roses In My Grave is a great debut album and I’m looking forward to what else Gregor Barnett releases in the future.
You can catch him on tour starting soon! More info here.

Into the Night saison 2
Coucou !

Elvis Costello; Photo by James O’Mara
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Some power pop for your Wednesday.
The Cairo Gang, Hideout
Emmett Kelly is a very busy man. When we last caught up with The Cairo Gang frontman, he was working on or playing on a million records. Those have come out by now, but I bet he’s working on or playing on a million more as we speak. Tonight, he plays Cairo Gang songs solo at the Hideout. His last record was 2017′s Untouchable, so considering the pace at which he records, he should hopefully play new tunes tonight.
Local singer-songwriter Caroline Campbell opens.
Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Vic Theatre
He’s back already? After a strong performance at Riot Fest, Elvis Costello & The Imposters return to play mostly the same set but also some songs from their new record Look Now. Costello wrote and produced most of the album, his 30th, first in 5 years, and first in 10 years with The Imposters. It includes collaborations with Carole King and, more notably, Burt Bacharach, who leads the band on piano on the tracks to which he contributed. The album’s hit rate is mixed, definitely not the “uptown pop” record Costello promised. Notably, there are a fair number of ballads, ranging from classic Bacharach cheese (“Don’t Look Now”) to the slogging (“Stripping Papers”) to the actually simultaneously tender and wry (“Photographs Can Lie”, “He’s Given Me Things”). However, the uptempo songs are highlights. The strutting For Real cover “Unwanted Number” is catchy and radio ready, and “Mr. & Mrs. Hush” prominently features horn lines and backup singers; Costello belts the title characters’ nicknames like he’s crying them out, showing off the weathered, weary voice that has graced him with age and fully caught up with his ever-present old soul style of songwriting and observation.
The Menzingers & Tiny Moving Parts, Concord
The Menzingers have followed up their 2012 opus On the Impossible Past with two good, not great albums: 2014′s Rented World and last year’s After the Party. A taste of what might be next has come in two singles this year, the vocally melodic “Toy Soldier” ( “There’s so much to be sad about these days,” sings Greg Barnett, adding syllables to the final word as if to emphasize the amount of pure bummers) and slinky “The Freaks”, the latter’s loud-quiet-loud indie rock a new sound for the usually charging band.
We previewed Tiny Moving Parts’ show at Lincoln Hall in January, having not yet heard their just-to-be-released latest record Swell, skeptical it would be able to top Pleasant Living. The verdict: We were right. The synth-heavy album’s productions and arrangements are a bit bloated on the first couple tracks “Applause” and “Smooth It Out”. The best tracks, like “Caution”, ascend along with the guitar riffs and vocals, though that track and “Feel Alive”’s tempo changes are rendered a bit cheesy with quick guitar arpeggios transitioning the songs from one part to another--a tired emo/math rock trope. “Wildfire” is another good one, its quiet midsection splitting two sides of an anthem, while “Malfunction” also makes good use of space. With Dylan Mattheisen’s lead vocals and scream rising above the instrumentation in the verses, “Malfunction”’s got the urgency of some of La Dispute’s best material combined with Tiny Moving Parts’ slick instrumentation (though those flashy guitar arpeggios won’t go away).
Nashville grunge pop band Daddy Issues open.
Tenacious D, Riviera
In the middle of the first Tenacious D tour in 5 years is Post Apocalypto, an animated video series and new album from Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Surviving an atomic bomb, having to save the world, Dave Grohl on drums–the series and album has all of the goofy concept you expect from a Tenacious D album. Expect a theatrical show, wherein the band plays the album in full before delving into their hits.
Wynchester, the country band consisting of Kyle Gass Band vocalist Mike Bray and Tenacious D electric guitarist John Konesky, opens.

The Menzingers Announce ‘From Exile’
The Menzingers will release From Exile, a reimagined version of Hello Exile, on September 25th. A vinyl release will follow in November, and pre-orders are now up. Today they’ve shared the new versions of “Strawberry Mansion” and “High School Friend.” Philadelphia-based punk band, The Menzingers will release From Exile, a reimagined stripped down version of their 2019 release Hello Exile. From Exile was recorded from the band’s respective homes while in isolation during COVID-19 stay at home orders. The album will be released digitally on September 25 and on vinyl November 13. Fans can pre-order the vinyl now via the band’s webstore, here. Today, the band share “Strawberry Mansion” and “High School Friend” from the forthcoming release. The Menzingers were on tour in Australia when the world seemed to abruptly stop due to COVID-19, forcing the band to cut their tour short and make their way back to Philadelphia. “The live music industry vanished before our eyes, and just like that we were out of work like tens of millions of others,” notes singer/guitarists Greg Barnett. “As the weeks progressed the upcoming tours got rescheduled, then rescheduled again, then effectively cancelled. There were times when it all felt fatal. There’s no guide book on how to navigate being a working musician during a global pandemic, so we were left to make it up as we went along. We wanted to document and create in the moment, and though we couldn’t be in the same room together due to social distancing lockdowns, we got creative.” Over the next few months, the band would re-record Hello Exile from their separate locations. “We would track the songs from our own home studios, share the files via dropbox, and pray it all made sense when pieced back together. Initially, we planned for the album to be similar to our acoustic demo collection ‘On The Possible Past,’ but we quickly found out that this batch of songs benefited from more detailed arrangements,” adds Barnett. “We rewrote, and changed keys and melodies. We blended analog and digital instruments in ways we never had before. We dug through old lyric notebooks and added additional verses. We got our dear friend Kayleigh Goldsworthy to play violin on two songs. No idea was off limits. Hell, I even convinced the band to let me play harmonica on a song (no small feat!). The recording process ran from mid-March till June, and upon completion we sent it over to our dear friend and close collaborator Will Yip to mix and master.” Since forming as teenagers in 2006, The Menzingers have shown their strength as rough-and-tumble storytellers, turning out songs equally rooted in frenetic energy and lifelike detail. To date, the band has released six studio albums, with their most recent, Hello Exile, released October 2019. Produced by Will Yip (Mannequin Pussy, Quicksand), Hello Exile sees The Menzingers take their lyrical narrative to a whole new level and share their reflections on moments from the past and present: high-school hellraising, troubled relationships, aging and alcohol and political ennui. With the band achieving that soul-baring intimacy all throughout the album, Hello Exile emerges as The Menzingers’ most emotionally daring work to date with Fader calling the album “The Menzingers’ greatest statement on adulthood to date.” The Menzingers is singer/guitarists Greg Barnett and Tom May, bassist Eric Keen, and drummer Joe Godino. Track Listing * America (You're Freaking Me Out) (From Exile) * Anna (From Exile) * High School Friend (From Exile) * Last To Know (From Exile) * Strangers Forever (From Exile) * Hello Exile (From Exile) * Portland (From Exile) * Strain Your Memory (From Exile) * I Can't Stop Drinking (From Exile) * Strawberry Mansion (From Exile) * London Drugs (From Exile) * Farewell Youth (From Exile) --- Please consider becoming a member so we can keep bringing you stories like this one. ◎ https://chorus.fm/news/the-menzingers-announce-from-exile/

Shake Off the Turkey with the Menzingers at Brooklyn Steel on Friday
Greg Barnett (vocals and guitar), Tom May (vocals and guitar), Eric Keen (bass) and Joe Godino (drums) have been making ska-inflected punk music as the Menzingers (above, performing “The Obituaries”) ever since forming in Scranton, Pa., 12 years ago. They’ve since relocated to Philly but continue to win over fans and critics alike with their live shows and recorded work. The fifth Menzingers long-player, the much-heralded After the Party (stream it here), arrived in February last year, placing on many Best Album of 2017 lists. “Every single song on After the Party is a blast; the energy and passion already found in Greg Barnett and Tom May’s songwriting has hit critical fucking mass,” raved Sputnik Music. Not to be outdone, the Line of Best Fit went all in: “Stadium-sized drum fills. Strident guitar chords. Gargantuan riffs. With one simple refrain the Menzingers tear through the fanfare and cut straight to the heart of what we’re all chasing.” And with their fall tour soon coming to a close, the Menzingers play Brooklyn Steel on Friday night, with Minnesota family-band trio Tiny Moving Parts and Nashville, Tenn., three-piece Daddy Issues opening.

China And Legal Accountability For COVID-19
By Edward Godino, Skidmore College Class of 2020
April 2, 2020
Tumblr media
With the ongoing pandemic of COVID-19 causing worldwide turmoil, it is only natural for people confined in their homes to want to assign blame, and many have set their sights on the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei province, in November of 2019. By the end of December, there was a growing number of cases with pneumonia-like conditions, the cause of which was unknown at the time. Doctors in Wuhan quickly ascertained that whatever it was could be transmitted from person to person and advised people to take precautionary measures.[1]However, in a blatant contradiction to the doctors’ findings, the Municipal Health Commission declared that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission. The Public Security Bureau then detained Dr. Li Wenliang, one of the doctors pioneering research into what would later be called COVID-19, on the charge of spreading rumors, and forced him to sign a confession saying his findings were untrue.[2] Seven others were arrested on similar charges. Dr. Wenliang later died of the coronavirus in February of 2020.
Government officials and doctors continued to tell two different stories, with the government insisting that person-to-person transference was not possible and that there were no deaths related to the virus. They suppressed all findings that contradicted their statements and denied assistance from the United States CDC.[3] It was not until the end of January 2020 that the Chinese government finally announced a quarantine of Wuhan. By then, it was far too late; the virus had already spread across China and to other parts of the globe, and the pandemic was well underway.
Many are now wondering if and how the Chinese government can be held legally accountable for their deceitful behavior and poor handling of the situation. A recent study shows that had they acted just three weeks earlier, the overall number of cases would have been reduced by 95%.[4] But can the government of an entire nation be sued for negligence?
Typically, governments have sovereign immunity, but"Cover-ups and deliberate acts to conceal a deadly medical crisis are not [among] the protected acts of a sovereign state or of responsible leaders.”[5] Under international law, China had a responsibility to report the coronavirus outbreak. Why they chose instead to conceal it, when they could have received help containing it and avoided this entire crisis, is anyone’s guess, but the violation of international law means they can be sued before international tribunals.
Lawsuits against the PRC have already begun. The Berman Law Group from Florida filed a class-action lawsuit against the Chinese government over personal injuries, deaths, and other damages caused by COVID-19.[6] Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is requesting an investigation into the coronavirus cover-up, calling for a resolution in the House of Representatives, while Senator Josh Hawley introduces companion legislation in the Senate. This resolution demands that the PRC “provide compensation for the harm, loss, and destruction their arrogance brought upon the rest of the world.”[7]
Despite these efforts, China will likely not face any repercussions until after the pandemic has subsided. Presidents Trump and Xi have reportedly had discussions and are working together to combat the virus,[8] and when asked about placing accountability on the Chinese government, democratic candidate Bernie Sanders said, “now is the time to be working with China.”[9]Right now,our best chance to beat this crisis is to stand together.
