Carrie (2002)
In today's review, I find high school revenge still thrive on a smaller screen. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2002 T.V. film version of Carrie #AngelaBettis #JodelleFerland #PatriciaClarkson #RenaSofer #KandyseMcClure #EmiliedeRavin #TobiasMehler
Films that dole out cataclysmic levels of carnage, do not tend to focus much on the after-effects of said chaos: the rebuilding, the guilt that can come with survivorship, or even the report to the local police constabulary, if they are still in existence. Yet, matters like these will probably be of utmost importance, and why would people want to keep the secrets of these events to their chest?…

Silent Hill (2006)
Tumblr media
I’d describe Silent Hill as dangerous for your taste. Hear me out. It’s got many creepy scenes, the music is fantastic, the monsters look awesome. That’s all terrific, but the video game-based picture gets increasingly ineffective the longer you watch it. By the end, it’s disintegrated into a creamy-colored, unappetizing mess but the promise it showed early on it compels you to forgive its flaws. You'll convince yourself that this is a good movie. It isn’t.
Rose (Radha Mitchell) is driving her adoptive daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) to the mysterious ghost town of Silent Hill - the subject of her persisting nightmares - hoping the trip will give them the answers they seek. Unfortunately, when Rose and Sharon arrive, they are quickly separated. Accompanied by motorcycle police officer Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden), Rose must find her daughter and uncover the mystery of Silent Hill.
The initial setup and look of the movie are dynamite. With eerie music, disturbing monsters aplenty, Silent Hill drips with mood and atmosphere. The film is set up like a horror survival video game (appropriate considering the source material), with the protagonist finding herself in a location she can't escape, hopelessly outmatched by creatures, and running around trying to piece together what's happening. It’s genuinely frightening.
When the picture focuses on the mystery to be solved, it’s a mess. If anything, the story plays out too similarly to a video game. People pick up clues and know exactly what to do with them, characters make lightning-quick decisions about where to go next, they don’t stop to ask questions but still find all the right answers. No one explains anything while legions of creatures appear briefly enough for fans to go "I know those!" Sure they look good, but what does it all mean? You have no idea - until a giant exposition dump tells you everything you need to know in a grainy, “spooky” flashback. Detective work? What detective work?
In the end, I’m not convinced the film makes a whole lot of sense. Some of the revelations about Sharon raise serious questions about the point of this ordeal - if there even was one. I'm not saying you have to dislike the film but consider the following: If the forces behind the madness of Silent Hill want what they say they want at the end… why are they even after Sharon? Shouldn’t they be helping her instead of trying to rip her to shreds? What have the people living inside of Silent Hill been eating in the decades they’ve been trapped there? Why does everyone speak in needlessly cryptic patterns in some scenes but leave clues (such as missing room numbers) for people to easily find? What does the big sequence at the end mean when you consider the film’s “cautionary message”? I could go on, but we’d be dealing in spoiler territory. Bottom line is, this movie’s script and story weren't sufficiently polished.
Silent Hill is a leaky horror film. Answers to the questions you’re asking don’t make the film more interesting, if anything it makes it more confusing. There are many successful elements… but so what when the story is incoherent? Silent Hill is not a good movie, but it makes you think it is. Don’t be fooled. Reposted from @texasfrightmareweekend Posted @withregram • @paulsalfen Here’s Round 2 of the fun panel selfies at Texas Frightmare Weekend. What a fun, energetic one with Corey Taylor from Slipknot! Then Jodelle Ferland from Twilight and Silent Hill was so sweet. And Emilio Rivera got deep and was very real. All were a joy and being there meant a lot. Don’t worry…we were masked besides the photos and most people were vaccinated. All were respectful and cool, which is one of the many reasons we love TFW! #texasfrightmareweekend #coreytaylor #slipknot #stonesour #jodelleferland #twilight #silenthill #emiliorivera #sonsofanarchy #mayansmc #paulsalfen #panel #convention #groupselfie #tfw #horror https://www.instagram.com/p/CT0N1eDB0x4/?utm_medium=tumblr

Silent Hill (2006)
Tumblr media
I think I’ve been cursed to watch Silent Hill over and over, disliking it more with each viewing. It looks great and shows promise early on but the film is crippled by weak characters and a plot that crumbles under scrutiny.
Rose (Radha Mitchell) is driving her adoptive daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland) to Silent Hill, a mysterious ghost town the young girl has been dreaming of. Upon arrival, the two are separated. Accompanied by officer Cybil Bennett (Laurie Holden), Rose must find her daughter and uncover the mystery of Silent Hill and the supernatural force that prevents them from escaping it.
Silent Hill has three major strengths. The first is the music (taken from the games if I read the end credits correctly). It effectively builds dread and tension. The second is the visuals. The monsters encountered are varied, disturbing to see, cool to watch, and scary. If you're a fan of the game, you’ll be happy to see Pyramid Head, Cybil, those acid-spewing ghouls, and other characters brought to life. Finally, the setup and premise are great.
I haven’t played any of the games that inspired Silent Hill but I know a thing or two about movies. This picture is bad. Firstly, the acting is rough at best. Particularly foul is Jodelle Ferland. The part must’ve been written for someone much younger. As is, she's portrayed as the sweetest, dumbest kid around. She hardly has any dialogue, babbling incessantly about Silent Hill while looking constantly dumbfounded. When she and her mother become separated, you think “Damn that stupid girl, running off AGAIN!”
While remaining faithful to its source material is a strength, it's also a weakness. We encounter 8 different types of monsters. It’s too many. By the time you realize how creepy they are, they’ve disappeared, never to return.
These flaws are nothing compared to the plot. This story gets flimsier the deeper you get. In a game, a key in a dirty bathroom stall is sure to be important. In real life, why would you think it's worth holding onto? Everything feels so contrived. People overreact to get our protagonists from point A to point B, all so we can sit down and have every mystery explained to us with all of the elegance of a 3-meter butcher knife to the torso. It’s astoundingly badly written. A mystery is properly solved by piecing together clues or a slow, chilling revelation. In Silent Hill, it’s as if someone got tired of waiting or dumped a box of exposition on our heads to hurry things along.
Tumblr media
We learn that a mutilated woman grew so full of hatred and fear she made a pact with the demon. The infernal force helped her get her revenge upon the town, with only a small group of religious zealots managing to escape. All of the steps necessary to make it work, everything that could’ve gone wrong makes it clear this story was written backward. Here’s what the demon’s plan was.
Separate Alessa (Lorry Ayers) into two selves, depositing the newly created baby Sharon at an orphanage to be adopted.
Wait 9 years for Sharon to convince someone to bring her to Silent Hill. Hope that she becomes separated from her parent(s) and decides to stupidly hide in some dusty building rather than come to her mother’s calls.
Terrorize Rose by sending monsters at her, while gambling on none of them killing her.
Convince Rose to make a deal with the demon, which would allow it to enter Rose’s body, and step into the church where the people Alessa wants to punish are hiding.
Hope that the fanatics in the church would stab Rose and allow the demon to escape.
Revenge.
That’s a big investment for a plan that hinges on people making some dubious choices. Why kill the people in the church anyway? Isn’t living in a hellish town infested with monsters, scrambling for food to eat in the darkness the definition of a hellish punishment? You'd think that these people's faiths - proven true and pure since their prayers keep the demon at bay - would guarantee a trip to Heaven. It doesn’t make sense to me.
Tumblr media
At the heart of Silent Hill is a ridiculous, disjointed mystery. The conclusion is particularly weak and juvenile, making this 2-hour commitment feel like a chore. It wants to be dark and edgy so bad it makes you roll your eyes. The sharp visuals and excellent score can be found in the video game. The original material this film has to offer isn't worth your time. (Fullscreen version on DVD, September 2, 2016)
