Which is fair. Kurang membanggakan apa. Hasil dari “pekerjaan tetap” mereka ini terlalu real untuk di-deny, jadinya ya mereka merasa “that’s the best way to live your life”. Celakanya, anaknya disekolahin di sekolah bagus dan jadi bisa mikir independently: “I can live the way I want, wong aku punya skill kok yang di-demand di mana-mana” dan gamau settle down. Nb: itulah teman-teman, kalau mau growing sesuatu, jangan terlalu bagus dan besar, nanti bisa kabur yang di-grow itu (ku habis baca meme di twt, inilah cara SM membesarkan artisnya: “to be big, but not too big so they can fight you back” lol).
Terus tapi ya sangat relaxing sih emang ketemu orang dan ngobrol tuh. Bikin kita jadi mikir juga aja. Dan reflect back.
Jalan dari Castle Mill ke stasiun to catch a bus buat ke Cowley only to papasan sama Hanif dan Mas Yusuf. Di Seoul Plaza ketemu Mba Rahma yang lagi last day and got ma sambal ABC extra pedas (too spicy for me sayangnya), after dikasih kue bolu pandan juga HUHU sangat baik. Ku juga dikabarin Dwi later on bahwa she saw me pas lagi jalan ke JingJing, in her words: “Gw ngeliat lu jalan di cowley road kmrin sore with headphone on sambal ngunyah>< we were calling you from across the street but you didn’t hear wkwkwkw”… well, from that description, that sounded like me… Definitely me lol. Kalian kalau tinggal di satu small city (seperti Oxford) denganku akan sangat sering menemukanku in that kinda situation dan semoga tidak marah kalau ku ga dengar karena beneran itu headphone pasti lagi full blasting The Weeknd (sekarang lagi dengerin album Starboy full lagi, sangat bagus). Atau ya Stray Kids, atau Chase Atlantic. OH! Kalau lagi beruntung, you’ll catch me while listening to more no-bass, calmer songs of previously mentioned artists, and so I can hear you… but the chances are slim…
Dari JingJing I walked to the city to Blackwell’s karena awalnya mau nyari buku dan kehabisan bacaan di rumah. Nggak sih, masih banyak buku buat dibaca di rumah, tapi pengen aja getting myself a new one, only to figure out BUKU SEKARANG MAHAL BANGET??? Dari situ ke WHSmith to get a watercolor and acrylic paper pad. Terus ke Ryman buat beli wadah bumbu-bumbu. Cuma £1 lho, lagi ada deal gitu. Terus ke Endorphins to buy a cake + coffee half price, and plannya ya mau have a me-time aja gitu baca buku (ada buku-buku seru di Endorphins lantai 2, mostly uncorrected proof copy gitu, salah satunya adalah si Arrangements in Blue-nya Amy Key yang lagi kubaca sekarang). Eh terus tiba-tiba Hanif nyusul. Ya gapapa sih I don’t mind juga having a friend to talk to. Dari situ kami makan ke Banana Tree, I had the usual Banana Tree Spiced Noodles with Iced Lemon Tea. Dari situ Hanif ada ketemu orang lain and I went to Tesco to get soymilk, flowers, and some other things.
Sampe rumah, my flatmate belum pulang kan, tapi ada teman lain yang ingin mengungsi dulu for sementara waktu. So she came after I reached home. But si teman yang mengungsi ini does her PhD in VERY DIFFERENT field from mine (she works on social humanity), so we talked. We talked SO MUCH that night. Tapi seru banget sih. I learned SO MANY things. Mostly on how the data on field is VERY DIFFERENT from the numbers that are in the paper, and if your job is to make public policy/regulations and you never go to the field? You are basically fucked. Which makes sense juga kenapa regulasi kita di Indo shitty, ya karena orang yang bikin regulasi bikin asumsinya dari papers aja, nggak based on field data/evidence in the field. I honestly don’t give a shit) Perpres, UU, Perda, gitu-gitu lah ya.
Terus hari Minggu-nya I already have planned not to go out juga anyway. Hhhhh. Ku juga jadi download buku baru ngecek di Bodleian ada soft-copy-nya judulnya “The Joy of Science”. Ku udh berhasil baca sampai chapter 3 as of now. Kalau beli, it will cost me £13… Jam 7-an my flatmate was back from her trip, BAWA BANYAK MAKANAN JUGA OMG. Terus yaudah lanjut ngobrol lagi sambil nonton Kim’s Convenience. Well, nggak menggosip sih, tapi ngomongin particular person that we knew/have met aja and I was so glad that I am not the only one that doesn’t like this person. Karena emang orangnya aneh aja. Lalu tidur.

Enough cute stuff, back on the hating the US schedule
The post is machine translated

HOW US FABRICATE SURVEY WITH THE RESULTS IT WANT 😡
🇺🇸 The USA and its lackeys, including Italy, love to fabricate polls with anti-Chinese results, taking a very small part of the World Population (the Western one), and elevating it to an "international community" 😂
🤔🤔As Comrade Li Jingjing points out, according to the latest survey by the Pew Research Center, a US think tank (coincidentally! 😂), the vision of 24 countries towards China would be «broadly negative», but here is the problem this survey: out of the 24 "interviewed" countries, 11 are part of NATO (❗️), others are anti-Chinese US allies such as Australia and Japan, and these do not represent the world at all 😂
🌐 The World is made up of 195 Countries, and Western Countries represent a tiny percentage of the World's Population, so this is the classic example of a poll distorted and shown as "global" | This is a "US - allies" poll, and these countries have ALWAYS hated China! 😡
🤔 However, as you step out of the "garden" of Borrell's EU Nazi and No. 1 warmongering country in the world, the situation changes completely:
📊 Out of 8 "middle-income countries" interviewed, 7 showed an absolutely favorable view of China 💕
📊 In 2022, Cambridge University promoted a survey with interviews in 137 countries (not the 20 US allies 😂), representing 97% of the world's population. “Guess what? Out of 6.3 billion people in developing countries, more than 70% expressed a positive view of China» 💕
💬 «I wonder what the results would be like if they asked developing countries: "What do you think of the West?"», concluded Li Jingjing 🇨🇳

What do you think of the costumes on Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty?
The plot of the drama is a mess, but the costumes look pretty, btw I'm not an expert:3
Hi, thanks for the request. To be honest I don't watch the dramas I review beginning to end because I don't usually have time for 50+ episodes dramas but the costumes in this one are so good that I actually watched 5 whole episodes, before getting put off by the plot...
Please stick around for this one because it is really good.
Dreaming Back to the Qing Dynasty
There is no English Wikipedia entry that I can copy and paste from for this drama (no love 😥) but it's basically about a modern working woman who time travels back to the Qing Dynasty and gets involved in court drama and romances. It's directed by Lee Kwok Lap and Chui Wai Hong (Rakuten Viki). I think in episode 4 or 5 they mention that the historical bits take place in the 45th year of Kangxi which is 1706. With a significant portion of the plot taking place in court, many characters should wear Manchu fashion and court dress. All the screenshots are from the Youtube uploads. The credits list Guan Qiwen as the stylist, Gu Fengxian as the costume designer, Lai Zhuping as the hairstylist and Ma Jingjing as the makeup artist. I wanted to credit all of them because as you will see, the entire team did such a great job.

I think the costumes look great, although they do lean more toward the mid and late 18th century than 1706. Finally for once a Qing period drama landed in the 18th century and not the 19th, this is a watershed moment in the history of Qing drama costuming ok? This is exactly what Story of Yanxi Palace and Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace should’ve looked liked but failed to deliver (they teleported themselves to the 1850s).
Tumblr media
The construction of the 便服 bianfu (informal dress) robes here isextremely satisfying: they're collarless, they have the thin black binding around the neck, they have the horse hoof cuffs and they're in plain fabrics. The colors are also quite realistic and achievable in the early 18th century court. I do wish the male characters had less hair though; in the beginning of the Qing, men were practically bald with the exception of a teeny bit of hair at the back (about the size of a coin) which was grown into a pigtail. This is too much hair for me, although it is still a massive improvement compared to older dramas where the dudes barely shaved off any of their hair. The 褂 gua or coat the guy on the right is wearing is also very legit, it has the conventional five buttons and the sleeves that are looser and shorter than the robe sleeves. I’m super impressed!

The look on the right is highly questionable, maybe it was a specific type of uniform. I already trust the costume designer with my life so I’m sure whatever they came up with probably had historical precedent. The robe with a standing collar and the wide binding at the 大襟 dajin or lapel/front closure was something that existed, I’m just not sure if this particular color and pattern would be used.

Her mother’s entrance look is very intriguing: while all the other characters in this seem to be Manchu, she is wearing Han clothing with a Han hairstyle. From the description given in the show it seems that her family was originally Han but served the Manchu emperors and got elevated into the Banners (the Manchu aristocracy) so it’s not completely out of place for her mom to wear Han clothing I guess. With that said, this hairstyle is pretty interesting. It looks like they were trying to do the 1710s/20s hairstyle that looks like poop and they got it almost right, it’s just that the “poop” part could sit closer to the forehead. Her robe looks very late 17th century which makes sense for her age, though the collar could be taller and have two buttons.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this scene we see again that the Manchu women’s robes featured in this show have slits at the sides, which shouldn’t exist for 衬衣 chenyi. They also layered a robe on top of another, going the 19th century chenyi + 氅衣 changyi route which also wasn’t a thing in the early 18th century.
Tumblr media
Here it looks like the mother’s robe is way too long to be a Han robe? Han robes were pretty long around this time but they would still show a bit of the skirt underneath. Her father’s outfit is great though, he has the wine colored robe with horse hoof cuffs and a coat with a 补子 buzi (square badge), which was appropriate for an official. I like that the buzi is also colorful, with waves and cliffs motifs and a single bird, which were the norm in the Qing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this scene where the ladies go to court it becomes more obvious that the costume designer completely understood the difference between Han and Manchu women’s fashion at the time. The Han girls are wearing two piece ensembles whereas the Manchu girls wear a single floor length robe. They gave the Han girls white, heavily pleated skirts and hairstyles with swallow tails which were popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. I can’t really tell how the Manchu hairstyles are achieved but if they were indeed braided I need to give the hairstylist a trophy.

Tumblr media
I just noticed that they did give the Manchu characters three earrings on each ear, a practice known as 一耳三钳 yi’ersanqian, to differentiate them from the Han ones, who wear one earring on each ear; that’s a nice touch. Ok I think the biggest problem with the Han women’s costumes in this show is the collar height and fit. It should be much taller and more fitted to the wearer’s neck. Oh and I love the embroidery on all of their costumes, they’re often in roundel patterns or at least follow the pattern distribution common to the early 18th century. The choice of florals and butterflies is also really cute and true to the era and season (this is probably springtime), in addition to adding contrast to the menswear which usually features plain fabrics or those with brocaded geometric patterns.
Tumblr media
This square necked garment is very interesting and does have a historical precedent, they got the construction correct even down to the wide facing at the collar. I don’t particularly agree with the use of fake hair for this lady because I think it’d be more authentic to braid her hair or use a turban to cover it (it’s also a little too big).
Tumblr media
Source here
Early Qing portrait of a Manchu lady. You can see her hair is much smaller.
Tumblr media
They did recreate the smaller hair with another character, who is Han but probably changed into Manchu garb for riding. I cannot tell you how much I respect their attention to occasion.
Tumblr media
Usually I would stop at episode 10 but I really want to see the winter clothes featured in the promotional photos so I skipped ahead. The winter clothes did not disappoint. The black fur collar trim is completely correct and so is the white fur trim for the rest of the coat. They’re also wearing winter hats with fur.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Omg this cloak YASSSSSS!! This might be the most legit early Qing cloak I have ever seen in a period drama. The construction is great because: 1) it doesn’t have a hood like in most period dramas, Chinese cloaks didn’t have attached hoods 2) it’s collarless, which is true to the early Qing 3) it’s pleated around the neck and most Qing cloaks were constructed by pleating or gathering around the neck 4) it buttons at the front with five buttons, which was conventional for Qing outerwear 5) it has no other shenanigans like openings or sleeves 6) it’s in a wool/felt fabric that actually looks appropriate for the season. I think 6 is particularly important and refreshing to me personally because fabric choice is something that’s very often overlooked in Chinese period dramas, like you would see people running around a field of snow in shiny silk adjacent fabrics and you’d just think “aren’t they cold in that?” Woolen fabrics, especially worsted wool which was waterproof, was usually imported from Europe to make rain coats and other outerwear and was quite unique to the Qing Dynasty, so I really appreciate the use of them here.
Tumblr media
Source here
An artifact for early Qing cloaks. This one is pretty interesting since it also has a built in coat inside, but we can still see the construction of the outer cloak.
Tumblr media
This Han look is very, very legit, and I love that it’s in a winter fabric too. The sleeves are a bit too short though, that’s also a recurring problem.
Tumblr media
She’s probably wearing a 抹额 mo’e underneath her winter hat, which was a very popular accessory throughout the Kangxi and Yongzheng eras. Her 吉服 jifu robe looks pretty good too. I’m not sure if she would wear 朝珠 chaozhu (the bead necklace) for jifu though.
Tumblr media
I leafed through 38 episodes and finally managed to get a screenshot of an outfit with the suspended kerchief. This is such a cool look that never got representation before this. You can see in many 18th century export paintings that sometimes Manchu women attached a plain white kerchief and other jewelry to the button at the dajin and just left them hanging there. My only quibble is that in the 18th century kerchiefs didn’t have this deliberately created rectangular shape yet, so they more than likely would just be loose and flowy instead of ironed and flat.
Tumblr media
Source here
Late 18th century export painting showing the kerchief.
Conclusion
Phew this got really long. I absolutely loved looking at the costumes in this drama, words cannot express how refreshing and well made they are. Because this drama has such bad ratings I was expecting some sloppy costuming but this totally blew my mind. They pulled out some rare garments and looks that no other period drama (that I know of) has done before and executed them almost flawlessly, e.g. the suspended kerchief, the cloak, the square necked jacket, the fur trimmed winter clothing etc.. The differentiation between Manchu and Han womenswear was perfectly handled, in a lot of older dramas you couldn’t tell the ethnicity of the female characters at all where you should be able to. The construction and cut of the clothes are almost entirely period and I commend the costumer for not adding unnecessary details to “spice things up”. The attention to occasion and season is also remarkable, in spring the female characters wear clothing with floral and butterfly motifs and in winter everyone wears warmer, heavyweight fabrics. This is something that usually tends to be lacking in a lot of older guzhuang dramas which paraded their characters around in gaudy colors and fabrics regardless of weather and occasion. There is still the classic Qing court drama problem of the costumes being accurate to a different era; the Manchu clothes look more appropriate to the Qianlong era (mid to late 18th century) whereas the Han ones are more on point. A couple recurring problems also exist, such as the use of the not-yet-invented changyi, standing collars that are too low and sleeves that are too short. However, that does not at all detract from how much I want to give the costuming team a cookie----no, my entire fucking cookie collection. It’s such a shame that the plot was mediocre because the costumes really have the potential to make this show groundbreaking. I rate the costuming in this drama a solid 7/10 and I will be naming this the most historically accurate Qing drama to ever grace this earth until a worthy contender appears. Bravo.

Guys, I need an update. Is China supposed to be an unbeatable superpower or close to collapse today? I can't keep up with the Americans propaganda
The post is machine translated
Translation is at the bottom
The collective is on telegram
😂 "CHINA WILL COLLAPSE!" / "CHINA IS THE BIGGEST WORLD THREAT!"
一 2015, WSJ: "China’s Economic Growth in 2015 Is Slowest in 25 Years", lamentando difficoltà. Tasso di crescita del 2015? +6,9% 😂
三 2017, è il momento di The Guardian, "Chinese growth slips to slowest pace for 26 years" - Tasso di crescita del 2017? +6,9% 😂
😂 | Approfondimento 🔍

😂 "CHINA WILL COLLAPSE!" / "CHINA IS THE BIGGEST WORLD THREAT!" | THE RIDICULOUS DUALISM OF ANTI-CHINESE PROPAGANDA 😂
🤮 The double standard, by far the most disgusting aspect of Western propaganda, is applied to any issue concerning China 🇨🇳
😂 Western media love to revel in the most ridiculous and disgusting anti-Chinese propaganda. In their anti-Chinese disposition, they are quite capable of promoting conflicting anti-Chinese messages 🤹‍♂️
😂 Confused thought and hypocrisy are founding characteristics of the West. As Comrade Li Jingjing points out, the Western media always present two "theories" [😂 ] about China:
一 "China is about to collapse" 🤣
😂 Since the 1990s, the "experts on China" (they are easy to recognize: they don't know the Chinese language, they know nothing about China, they've never been to China, but they love to spit judgments about China) claim that China «is about to collapse» 😂
♨️ From Goldstone's 1995 "The Coming Chinese Collapse" to Gordon G. Chang's "The Coming Collapse of China", every year - from 1995 to 2023, these 白痴 still dream of the "collapse of China", but China is always grown up, and reached the Great Goal of building the 小康社会 ⭐️
🔍 Insight: "Every prediction of the West about the "Collapse of China" has failed" 😂
😂 By ridiculing themselves, the "experts on China" have tried another way, which they still use, namely: "The difficulties of the Chinese economy" | Reading these articles, a situation of perennial crisis is painted, only to have to remain silent in the face of the results achieved 🤭
🤔 «Recently - says Li Jingjing - there has been an increase in Western media articles that paint a "gloomy" picture of the Chinese economy» | Just look at the Q1 (+4.5%) and Q2 (+6.3%) economic data to understand that this is classic Western garbage 😂
🤔 Now the Evergrande Case is fashionable 😂 | In the USA the banks collapse and the economic situation remains "positive and vibrant", China - on the other hand - has been "about to collapse due to Evergrande" since last year | 哈哈哈哈哈哈哈 😂
一 2015, WSJ: "China's Economic Growth in 2015 Is Slowest in 25 Years", lamenting difficulties. Growth rate of 2015? +6,9% 😂
二 2016, anxious Reuters article, "China cuts 2016 growth target amid continued economy concerns" - 2016 growth rate? +6,7% 😂
三 2017, it's time for The Guardian, "Chinese growth slips to slowest pace for 26 years" - 2017 growth rate? +6,9% 😂
🐰 We could continue with 2018 - 2023, but the point is clear 🤧 For the West, China must always be in bankruptcy, but then it is not clear why everyone must unite to block its rise 😂
🤔 So, since they could no longer deny the results, they started the mantra from 笨蛋: «But at what price?» 😂 | insight 🔍
二 "China is the biggest threat in the world" 🤣
😂 China, for the West, is always on the verge of collapse: nothing works, it's always in crisis and so on. However, at the same time, it is the greatest threat in the world, as it is too powerful, very powerful, and its economic, political and military rise must be stopped by the "democratic and civilized" 😂
💬 ′′ It's like watching a TV with only two channels: one shows a little lamb breathing heavily, the other a monster ready to strike. They still haven't decided which of the two is China" 😂

Study: Onset of COVID-19 pandemic led to 74% drop in overall emotional well-being
People in China who said they felt knowledgeable about the coronavirus at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic were more likely to have a positive emotional state than were those who said they didn’t feel well informed, according to a new study co-authored by a Johns Hopkins University researcher.
Drawing from two large nationwide surveys conducted in China around the time of the coronavirus outbreak, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School Assistant Professor Haiyang Yang found that the onset of the pandemic led to a 74% drop in overall emotional well-being. Factors that accentuated the decline included residing near an outbreak epicenter, being a member of a vulnerable group such as the elderly, and dealing with relationship issues during a lockdown.
Yet Yang and his co-author, Jingjing Ma of Peking University, note that people who perceived themselves as knowledgeable about the virus—regardless of the actual amount of their knowledge—experienced more happiness during the outbreak than did those who didn’t perceive themselves as informed about COVID-19. This higher perception of one’s own knowledge was associated with a stronger sense of control, which helped protect emotional well-being, Yang says.
What’s more, this conclusion was largely consistent across demographic and economic groups.
“People’s perceptions about themselves are often more potent in influencing their emotional well-being than the corresponding objective aspects,” says Yang, a psychology expert. He adds that the findings of the study, which is published in Psychiatry Research, could inform public policymakers and mental health authorities who seek to protect or boost psychological well-being during a major outbreak such as COVID-19.
“Resources for mental health care should be made more available to groups that are most psychologically vulnerable during an epidemic,” Yang says. “Specific policies, programs, and interventions need to be developed to help foster positive family relationships during an extended lockdown. Also, efforts that increase people’s understanding of how to effectively prevent infection can help boost their sense of control and, consequently, their psychological health.”

People who say they know more about coronavirus feel better
People in China who said they felt knowledgeable about the coronavirus at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic were more likely to have a positive emotional state than those who said they didn’t, a new study shows.
Drawing from two large nationwide surveys conducted in China around the time of the coronavirus outbreak, researchers found the onset of the pandemic led to a 74% drop in overall emotional well-being.
Residing near an outbreak epicenter, being a member of a vulnerable group such as the elderly, and dealing with relationship issues during a lockdown were all factors that accentuated the decline.
The researchers note, however, that people who perceived themselves as knowledgeable about the virus—regardless of the actual amount of their knowledge—experienced more happiness during the outbreak than did those who didn’t perceive themselves as informed about COVID-19.
This higher perception of one’s own knowledge associated with a stronger sense of control, which helped protect emotional well-being, says Haiyang Yang, an assistant professor in the Carey Business School at Johns Hopkins University.
What’s more, this conclusion was largely consistent across demographic and economic groups.
“People’s perceptions about themselves are often more potent in influencing their emotional well-being than the corresponding objective aspects,” says Yang.
He adds that the findings of the study could inform public policymakers and mental health authorities who seek to protect or boost psychological well-being during a major outbreak such as COVID-19.
“Resources for mental health care should be made more available to groups that are most psychologically vulnerable during an epidemic,” says Yang.
“Specific policies, programs, and interventions need to be developed to help foster positive family relationships during an extended lockdown. Also, efforts that increase people’s understanding of how to effectively prevent infection can help boost their sense of control and, consequently, their psychological health.”
The research appears in Psychiatry Research. Yang’s coauthor Jingjing Ma is from Peking University.
