This Started a Great Rant in Me So: Jin Mi and Self-Righteous Obsession of What is Denied From You (and other problematic portrayal of female and male characters in Ashes of Love)

I really didn’t like also that Jin Mi said in her confrontation with Run Yu you got closed to me so that you can get knowledge about your enemy’s son. Like girl I thought you were out of the Water Mirror but I guess you still choose to live in a bubble. Like you got close to him first by getting into his palace and his place while he was sleeping. And the guy you say his enemy’s son was his brother who he constantly helped and you saw it. Even at one of the episodes that Jin Mi was trapped inside a chair because Xu Feng was bullying her, he came to see Xu Feng not Jin Mi and had a friendly chat with him. How could she say that? It is just fucking villainization of Run Yu so that she can clear her conscious.

You can also see how she is superficial and hypocritical with still no knowledge of how thing work by constantly saying to him that is not what love means and thing like that. Like you didn’t know what love is all of your life and because you were suffering for couple of months (which is nothing to immortals and she who has lived more that 4100+ years) you don’t get to lecture people about love. Especially if that person had so selflessly saved you countlessly when you couldn’t understand love. I mean Run Yu might have lost that love and it could have all become muddled with his hate at the end but like he said he truly loved once but he was humble bout it so everyone messed with that as well (like Xu Feng) and it also became something he felt vengeful as well. Also this guy selflessly saved thousands by taking torture for them due to them being his mother’s people who he loved. How can love be more purer that sacrificing yourself without even seeing them. begging heavenly empress to not to kill his mother in the most disgraceful way just to save her. You are still just a child who doesn’t know anything Jin Mi and it shows.

How can she also blame him for manipulating her in the same breath when she didn’t know about love because Xu Feng was worse. At least Run Yu constantly asked Jin Mi and him trying to get her hand in marriage can’t be compared with Xu Feng constantly forcing things on her. Like do you actually know the man you are in love with? If you hate Run Yu for those how can you love Xu Feng.

All of that self-righteous speech should go to fucking trash. I couldn’t believe when I read the comment who have all found that a deserved speech. It was all audience manipulation done by the show. This is something weak writing does constantly, instead of showing they make characters say things that they want us to believe. Hence all the characters constantly trashing Run Yu and all of them being shot down by couple of sentences by Run Yu since he is not the person they try to portray. The only reason I believe he doesn’t do that to Jin Mi is because he is afraid of losing her and wants to keep her so he allows her to do anything and say anything as he just heals her after her actions gets her hurt and takes whatever she says.

It is so sad how this guy has come, he is so desperate to hold on her because old Jin Mi was the only person who openly appreciated him and made him feel cared for, deserving of happiness and comfortable in his own skin. That is why he desperately needs Jin Mi to return back to her carefree self as it had elevated the heavy burden of his life. This is why Kuang Lu does not help even with all of her devotion because she is not brave enough to yell at him how amazing he is and make him feel lighter. She only also loses herself in his misery, crying for him and standing by his side silently, always in pain for him and only ever leading him into wrong decisions like pursuing Jin Mi using trickery even though that is not his true self or personality.

That is why I can’t agree with people saying he should get together with Kuang Lu and he does not see her. He sees her but he can’t fall for her as she is not bringing something that makes him fall for her. If I was him as well I would not want Kuang Lu as well she is not really helpful except for doing duties she only ever stays there even sadder than he is which is not what he wants in life. Think about it you have a terrible life and the person next to you also is constantly suffering for you making you even feel sadder for yourself, pushing you into extreme decisions, validating your intrusive/bad thoughts and actions. I have heard people say KL loved RY truly but I don’t think that is a full true love. How can someone who truly loves a person for his kindness and niceness make them do something that is against these.

But that said Jin Mi is also a terrible match for him as well because she is too blind and self-righteous that she slowly destroys herself by bad decisions, ending up not caring for anybody except Xu Feng much (she doesn’t even look at people in important moments, and she saves Yan You but it only looks like it is mostly because he knows who killed her parents and can prove XF’s innocence as she didn’t even make eye contact with him properly when he apologized to her). I think she is a bad match for anyone because she is just almost bent on being in constant misery. She is incredibly selfish about her love and now that she can feel romantic love she doesn’t care for any other kind of love, her friendliness to Run Yu and any other character is dead simply because she had wronged her love and everyone in her life must pay for that. I missed old Jin Mi so much after the pill was destroyed because she became lie a stupid and self righteous version of Sui He, only caring romantic love relationships and mistreating everyone else even though she was more subtle and still cared for other people a bit but this was not the gallant heroic girl we have met who saved her friends and sacrificed her own safety stupidly once he saw a friend in danger. Run Yu loved that person but that person was long gone because she had become obsessed about getting the love that was denied of her and became incredibly selfish about it not even looking another person as if she could tolerate them.

By the end it was hard to support her and XF too even though I loved their mortal arc they were nit like that at all. They were so full of themselves and disillusioned of the world they almost came of as self-righteous obsessed people rather than in love more than Run Yu who was the person that narrative wanted us to believe the most corrupted. I mean it should say a bit him with Qiong Qi is as monsterous as Xu Fend as himselfJSJSHSNSN. Like all of them are like in Evil spectrum at the end. Jin Mi and Xu Feng are Lawful Evil as well as Run Yu.

So at the end maybe they have learned like Run Yu did from his mistakes but the fact that Xu Feng still can’t see his faults and still puts the sword on RY through for saying he was righteous in killing his parents makes me doubt it a bit but maybe him choosing not to was him knowing that it was wrong. Still dooming RY to be the Heavenly Emperor to repent his sins while he does nothing for his own leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And I would like it that the part where Jin Mi said that RY was a king immortal back than as more emphasized to be a take back about what she said about him before. I would have like to see Jin Mi becoming her old self who cared people other than XF again at least by showing her not only giving Liu Ying a flower but all her old flower family who always helped and cried for her and even Yan You because she claimed they were friends. My problem is that the speedrun of Xu Feng’s sufferings does not fix all the issues about these characters and still leave Run Yu as the only one who did any wrong which was not true. I also don’t like the claime that ignorant male leads are called not scheeming and pure hearted to only push Run Yu down even more as a person who alwas had a bad personality which is the opposite of what we have seen. Run Yu was clever and mostly schemed to help people except for when he was blackened and one time under Kuang Lu’s influence while main leads became more and more ignorant every that and in the name of not scheming (which is actually because even combined they have a single brain cell and that was mostly on Jin Mi’s side at the end of the show) they are ignorant, assuming and self righteous with horseblinders on 24/7 even at the end. Their romance is destructive actins like breaking engagement, marriges, stealing other peoples wifes when they are in the marriage caravan at the end. The show gives up in the untoxic portrayal of love but still accuses RY and Sui He of being toxic.

Although I believe some of these could be that somethings where changed from the novel while others didn’t and at the end nothing made sense together, it is still a mess and made me incapable of crying for the romance, I only was able to cry when JinMi died trying to fix all this mess and not be the Helen of Troy and when Run Yu was miserable at the end. It was quite sd as it had all the thing necessary for a great cry but it kind of killed the effect by senseless and tastless narrative choices more that the actions, the narrative was the buzzkill.

Okay, I just have to point this out. I was rewatching the wedding episode of Ashes of Love and I’ve got an issue. Later in the story, Jin Mi and everyone tries to make it look like Run Yu intentionally got Xu Feng killed at the wedding. That he miraculously (note sarcasm) and meticulously had pre-cognizant abilities that allowed him to know that if he said those words/did these things that Jin Mi would off Xu Feng for him.

There’s just one problem: 

This is not the look of someone who was expecting what just happened to happen. This look (especially when you can see the actual clip and see the movement of his face/eyes) is absolutely surprised/caught off guard by what’s just transpired. 

Not to mention, this look looks like he’s crying. His eyes look watery, he has a look that doesn’t scream ‘I got what I wanted, everything has gone according to plan, this is exactly how all of this was supposed to go down I’m so happy’ look that everyone and their aunt tries to say he felt/had in later episodes. 

I’m just gonna say it. I sincerely doubt that Run Yu wanted Xu Feng dead. I think Jin Mi got out of hand and acted irrationally and erratically and he just had to deal with the fallout of it and everyone else refused to take responsibility for their actions (cough Jin Mi cough) and just laid all the blame on the easy target which was Run Yu. The person everyone in that world seems to love to hate/shit on.
