Free Birds (2013)
Free Birds is almost there. There are occasionally funny and clever moments but as a whole, it’s just not that well written.
After escaping the fate of most turkeys around Thanksgiving, Reggie (voiced by Owen Wilson) is forced to go on an adventure with Jake (Woody Harrelson), a member of the Turkey Freedom Front. Together, they hop into a time machine and travel back to 1621 so they can prevent the very first Thanksgiving - and every subsequent turkey massacre - from happening.
I’ll give “Free Birds” this much; it’s a better film than I expected. There are few obvious time travel jokes, the plot is original, and it even has some genuine laughs. I love the concept. Turkeys going back in time to prevent a massive, annual gravy-covered genocide is so crazy it could lead anywhere. What if they make a wrong move and accidentally wipe out their entire species, or inadvertently cause the human race to starve? Your imagination runs wild with possibilities, making the actual results that much more disappointing.
Why is it that Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is the only time machine movie that actually uses a time machine correctly? In Free Birds, our heroes can jump backward in history whenever they want. It’s not a one-way trip like in The Terminator. If the film was written with any intelligence, it would mean limitless potential. The second someone is in a perilous situation, here comes a gadget from the future to help them out of their jam! Instead, it’s a time travel story that features characters with a much more limited imagination than the audience mixed blended with a been-there-done-that children’s film. The instant you see Reggie talk to the native turkeys of 1621, you know exactly what’s going to happen between him and Jenny (Amy Poehler). Once a mystery surrounding the “Great Turkey” is established, you'll easily predict what's coming next. If you wait for the movie to use its assets to their full potential, you'll still be waiting after the end credits have finished scrolling.
There's got to be someone influential out there who saw the film's potential and plans on someday remaking it. To them, I have some advice. Firstly, ditch Reggie. He’s boring. The only thing he’s got going is that, at first, he’s the smartest turkey around. That concept is dropped the instant he winds up in the past. Next, make it smarter, or at least crazier. Then this film would have an identity. It would stand out and make up for the fact that it’s not really a film about turkeys, just feathered people, and not particularly well-animated ones either.
Free Birds could’ve been something special, a Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs kind of zany tale that buckled your expectations. Instead, it’s destined to be forgotten. The only ones who will remember it are those who saw it when they were too young to judge it appropriately. Unfortunately, they're the ones who will suffer from it the most, as they will inevitably revisit it to "prove the naysayers wrong" and wind up wasting twice as much time as everyone else on Free Birds. (January 27, 2017)

Follow-up post: I attempted to break down the timeline of the Hex in its entirety, but I probably messed up somewhere
I already knew the part from the second half, as shown in my last post, but I had to rewatch most of Episode 4 to get the rest of this:
Day 1: Wanda arrives in Westview and accidentally creates the Hex
Night 1: N/A
Day 2: the missing person’s case is reported, Jimmy and Monica to go the Hex, and Monica gets sucked in
Night 2: N/A
Day 3: SWORD shows up
Night 3: SWORD discovers the broadcast and tries to crack it
Day 4: Monica is thrown out at first light, and then recovers
Night 4: Wanda comes out to confront SWORD, Fake Pietro shows up, the entirety of episode 6 happens, and Wanda expands the Hex
Day 5: episodes 7-9 happen
That still leaves 5 days between Wanda’s visit to SWORD and her arrival at Westview. Unless a little more time passed between the Hex going up and Jimmy taking notice, which I suppose is possible. But if that’s the case… what was everyone inside the Hex doing at the time. Was there more 50s stuff we didn’t see?
Now I’m suddenly realizing this does contradict one thing: Darcy says she has been watching the broadcast for “the past week”, and if this timeline I’ve gathered is right, that’s not true at all. So either the writers are being inconsistent, or there were timeskips we weren’t made aware of.
Either that or we can say she was generalizing since it was still almost 5 days, and I might say “the last week” if I was doing something that long.

what is the opposite of a sacrifice? gifts that were given without asking anything in return in the finale checklist:
Carpenter's gift to Faulkner
Elgin's gift to Paige
Hayward and Paige's gift to each other
VAL's gift to the Woundtree disciples
The Silt Verses
[ID: A collection of excerpts from The Silt Verses, listing as follows:
1. Carpenter's gift to Faulkner:
There'll be a place for you, Faulkner. No matter how hard it gets, no matter what they do to you, there'll be a place for you, and it'll be beside me.
That's my offering, That's all I have to give.
2. Elgin's gift to Paige:
ELGIN: I wanted you to have a moment's peace.
And I wanted you to know, when you looked back at today, that we waited for him, for as long as we possibly could.
3 + 4. Hayward and Paige's gift to each other:
My time with you, that was a gift. Hearing your voice again now when never thought I would - that's another gift.
Watching you walk away like this, that's the greatest gift I could ever ask for. because I get to die knowing you got further than me.
So please, Paige. Keep on walking.
Walk on until you're lost to me.
HAYWARD: You've got to go, Paige. You're out of time.
Let me have my gift. Please. Let me watch you walk away.
PAIGE knows she has to go. She's choking with emotion.
PAIGE: (Into the radio) You… you were a gift to me, too, Hayward. I don't think you'll ever understand how much.
5. VAL's gift to the Woundtree disciples:
VAL: Glottage Meteorological Society?
Yes. I live up by the border. (Lying one last time) The winds are changing. They're blowing strong, from west to east.
Make sure everyone knows.
6. The Silt Verses:
PAIGE: (Slowly. calmly. with feeling) These were The Silt Verses.
HAYWARD: These were The Silt Verses.
FAULKNER: These were The Silt Verses.
CARPENTER: These were The Silt Verses. And I name our disciples thus. Méabh de Brún.
PAIGE: Lucille Valentine.
HAYWARD: Jimmie Yamaguchi.
FAULKNER: B. Narr.

No idea who this sanshiro guy is but he just got a ton of points in my book for sounding like the tsv character ever, very cool of him
#it was very fun to recognize a character in a series like this by my slightly niche audio drama interests#a real bright spot because the rest of the episode was a bit of a mess if I'm honest#code geass#tsv#the silt verses

carpenter and hayward are on a smoke break discussing important things, definitely related to the running of the Grace and not just...whatever they can think of to fill the silence, when they fall into exchanging bitterly amusing work stories. hayward brings up a messy partner, who left chocolate stains on evidence and documents and also (worse, somehow) hayward's hand; carpenter rolls her eyes and offers up her first partner, who was so bowled over by every minor coincidence that she was constantly on her knees. hayward mentions the LT who called him "jimmy" for a full year; carpenter snorts and says she can top it---
carpenter's halfway through a story about vaughn---clever, black-humored vaughn, who fell out of touch once they got their fancy new job, but was a bright spot in her young life all the same---when hayward's eyes flick over carpenter's shoulder, and he goes still.
".....paige?" he says. His voice has gone panicky, quiet.
when carpenter turns, paige is the palest she's ever seen her. (and carpenter has had the dubious honor of holding paige's hair back during a recent bad bout---she's seen paige very pale indeed.)
carpenter swallows, asks, "everything all right?"
"I...want to know how it ends," paige says, almost dazed. "how does it end?"
#this has been in my drafts for a solid week now and since tonight is for silt verses....?#whelp. have a thing.#anyway I know in my heart that carpenter and hayward smoke. I don't care if they've never once smoked in canon.#I don't care if I have invented this wholecloth from my own imagination.#I simply know that they do. and I'm correct.#the silt verses

As a British Christian who has had a abiding love of horror through my life, allow me to infodump about how much I adore theological horror, namely @thesiltverses. It is the most fascinating deep dive into people’s lives and experiences with religion and societal norms combined with some of the most intense horror I’ve ever heard.
Do you know how refreshing it is to have any piece of media posit the idea that we could live in the world where we know there are gods; gods exist; they do things, we can SEE they do things, and we still DON’T HAVE A CLUE, a single CLUE, what they want from us?
So many times I’ve seen people say ‘uh, why doesn’t God reveal himself to us?!’
My sibling in Christ, when has that ever resulted in fewer arguments?
It certainly seems like theological debate reigns on in The Silt Verses.
I relate so hard to the characters, and the characterisation of Carpenter and Faulkner is just perfection. Anyone who has been in a church knows both of them, and has been one or both of them in their lives (sans a few sacrifices. Maybe). The acting by B. Narr and Méabh de Brún is just phenomenal as well.
That feeling when your god and the way your religion talks about your god is so mismatched. That lurch when your self perception and others perception of you are jarringly opposite.
One of the main lessons out of thesiltverses (and #themagnusarchives ) is this:
Human beings are both victims and villains, and the two do not cancel each other out. Ever.
The heartless, ruthless bigoted people you despise do good things.
The kind, sweet gentle people you support do evil things.
(The Parish of Tide and Flesh can be interpreted using both sentences)
And you are and do the same. You know this.
The good you wish to do you do not.
The evil you wish not to do you do.
The solution is to open your eyes to the world. To not be fooled by sweet lies. And you are the one who is easily fooled by yourself.
I love the character Paige for this sentiment (amazing performance by Lucille Valentine). While she leaves a ‘religion’ and starts a ‘cult’, it might be closer to say she forsakes bureaucracy for grassroots. Or consumerism for community. Perhaps even idols for faith.
But it’s hard. Everything inside you is desperately tired and it’s too much: to look, to consider, to see all these things, all the time, and old habits die hard.
We all know a Dan.
Especially if you go to church.
Also - Hayward. I love Hayward. I love the unraveling of his worldview, the fear of the stink and how insane it must be trying to police such a complex world (reality is horror, goes the old refrain). I always loved following this character through the landscape, through fields and ruins, offices and cities. Stellar work by Jimmie Yamaguchi.
And then there’s all the other voice actors who worked on this. Everyone did amazing work, and the siltverses became such a real universe to me. I can understand whether there’s so much fanart, and why people enjoy this series so much.
Then there’s the horror itself. Horror for me is attract and repel. Some horror grabs you by the hand and pulls you down dark twisting corridors. Some horror shocks and stuns, jarring your nerves and leaving you reeling. It sets your teeth on edge
For me the silt verses perfectly walks that tightrope, with intense, terrifying sounds that twisted me into knots, while sweetly singing me down the narrative path. I want to listen again, but I also kind of don’t?! It’s very, very intense. Attract and repel.
Poems. Poems and horror, horror and poems. The Silt Verse breathes and spasms with rhyme and hymn and it makes the world darkly romantic, full of choral dread, and bloody rhythm.
One last song of revelations
of prophets' dark deceptions
Of love, and gods' defeat
Of love, and gods' defeat
I know religion is a sensitive topic at the best of times and people will have quite different reactions to this podcast. I love it though. I think it’s really well-written and despite the terrible things done because of religion in the story, I don’t think it’s negative about being religious per se, I think it’s open-ended. the question is- where do we go from here?
I think as well, discussions about religion don’t have to be restricted to audio dramas that are specifically about religion. In The Magnus Archives there’s a question: what if you met a god on judgement day, and he really, really didn’t like you. This god knows EVERYTHING about you, and HATES you.
Genuinely one of the most terrifying theological horror villains out there, and I don’t know if jonny even intended him as such!
How far you are willing to go for faith, and how far you can drift on the currents is something I haven’t really seen discussed before, and if there’s one thing I adore its stories that make me think. I grew up on Pratchett, Asimov, Pullman and Adams, a glorious fix of fantasy and sci-fi, and I always want stories that push boundaries.
Listen to The Silt Verses. It’s worth it. But read the content-warnings and be safe. ❤️
Also - IN-UNIVERSE CREDITS. Amazing!
(I originally posted a condensed (ish) version of this on blue sky, as so many creators are coming back there)

Spooktober (3) - A terrible promise
Warnings: soulmate au and spoilers for Wandavision.
“He is a vile, reprehensible excuse for a human being!” You stormed into Darcy’s lab with a scowl and sat down with a loud thud, jostling the equipment on the desk.
“Whoa! Easy with the aggression!” Darcy yelped grabbing for her coffee cup as it tilted next to her laptop, threatening to spill its contents over her keyboard. “I’m guessing the meeting didn’t go well?”
“It didn’t,” Agent Jimmy Woo confirmed.
“What? Did the big bad Hayward bench us?”
“It would have been so much better if he had!” You complained heatedly before dropping your head into your hands.
There was silence and then Darcy broke it by complaining that no one ever told her anything important. Captain Monica Rambeau entered the lab just in time to catch the end of Darcy’s complaint and shooting you a remorseful look, which you didn’t see because your head was till in your hands, she spoke.
“(Name) began to see colour the second we walked into the command centre.”
“Oh,” Darcy gasped in understanding. She pulled herself out of her chair and walked over to you. She patted you on the shoulder awkwardly, “Are you sure it’s him?”
You raised your head, “We were the only four people in the room.”
Darcy blew out a breath, “Well, this sucks for you.”
“Yeah, no kidding.”
Jimmy held up his hand, “But this isn’t the first time that you’ve been in the same room as Hayward.”
“Besides,” Monica interjected, “I’ve heard rumours that Hayward’s married. A soul bond wouldn’t activate if one of the people involved is already taken.”
“That’s a good point.”
“Your body could have been reacting to the presence of your soulmate even if they weren’t in the room with us.”
Hope began to spread through you, “Maybe it’s not Hayward after all.”
“Hold up!” Jimmy made a T shape with his hands, “Can we go back to the part where Hayward is married? Who would marry him? I wonder what they’re like. They must have the patience of a saint to put up with him. Or maybe he’s subm-”
“Jimmy, I beg you not to finish that sentence,” you pleaded.
“Right yeah,” Jimmy shuddered. “I don’t want that mental image either.”
Monica looked similarly grossed out while Darcy seemed intrigued by the fact that Hayward was married.
An alarm rang out unexpectedly causing you to flinch reflexively, “WEAPONS OFFLINE! WEAPONS OFFLINE!” A robotic voice shrieked.
You covered your ears as the alarm and the voice continued, “WHAT COULD CAUSE THAT?!” You shouted over the noise.
“NORMALLY I’D SAY AN EMP BUT IF THAT’S THE CASE THEN WE WOULDN’T BE HEARING THE-”
The robotic voice stopped booming as abruptly as it started and Jimmy cut himself off. He stared at the speaker in the ceiling with an expression of dread on his face. Darcy raised her raised her eyes to stare at the same spot with her hands covering her ears.
“That’s not a good thing right?!” She exclaimed, removing one of her hands from her ears to point at the quiet speaker.
There was a crackling sound followed by a popping sound and all of the technology in the lab suddenly shut down.
“Yeah, that’s not good.” Monica agreed, walking over to Darcy’s machines and trying to manually turn them back on.
“YOU POSSESS SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO THE GODS!” A thunderous voice rang out, brimming with the promise of ancient power and retribution.
Now it was your turn to stare up at the ceiling, wondering if the voice was coming through the speaker. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Monica, Jimmy and Darcy falling to their knees with the heels of their palms pressed into their temples.
Your breathing grew ragged as it dawned on you why you were the only one still standing and not clutching your head.
“BRING HER TO MY TEMPLE ON THE EDGE OF TOWN OR THE HEX ENCIRCLING WESTVIEW WILL BE THE LEAST OF YOUR WORRIES!” The voice declared ominously.
When she was certain that the voice wouldn’t say anything else, Darcy lowered her hands from her head and still kneeling, she grinned up at you, “He called it The Hex.”
The smile that appeared on your face at Darcy’s comment was wiped off your face when Monica spoke as she climbed to her feet, “The only temple on the edge of town belongs to the Greek God of War.”
Your breath whooshed out of you at her statement.
Jimmy exhaled, “Well, at least your soulmate isn’t Hayward.” He said with a tone of forced cheer.

How to Request :
Make sure to state what you would like in the imagine/story and what genre (?) Like angst, fluff, smut (sometimes). Also what character or person you would want in the imagine. 🙃
*Disclaimer*
I write for all of these characters and their actors and if you have someone else you would want me to write for be sure to put that in your request these are just the characters I could think of off the top of my head
P.S. I also do some ship imagines like Nick x Charlie (heartstopper), etc. So if you want ship imagines be sure to send them in and I will try and get to them.

Another one of Jimmy's ex properties, Fen place mill. He sold it in 2008. He seems to have loved old mill houses
