Namaste! How else should I begin this post!
The greeting is the first thing that you learn about a place. It is the first thing that you get to hear in your flight, at the airport, in the taxi and of course at the travel destinations. Greeting from your homeland is also something you carry with you.
Namaste is the most commonly used greeting in India. Very often, when people realize you are an Indian, they fold hands and greet you with a Namaste.
However, when nothing in India is universal, how can our greetings be. Here is a list of some of the commonly used greetings across India.
Thanks to my Twitter and FB timeline for adding to this list. I knew most of them, but some of them like Dhaal Karu from Himachal was a revelation for me.
Researching for this post was absolute fun.
1. Namaste & its Variants
Namaste means ‘I bow to the divine in you’. Ask any Hippie and they would even say ‘The divine in me bows to the divine in you’.
The term has many variants – Namaskar, which is ideally used when you address more than one person.
In Kerala it becomes Namaskaram, in Karnataka it goes as Namaskara and in Andhra states Namaskaramu.
Nepal also uses the same term or Namaskar to greet.
They all mean the same – acknowledging the divine or good in you before any conversation or transaction begins.
2. Ram Ram & its variants
After the more popular Namaste greeting, Ram Ram and its various variants are used in most of the Hindi speaking belt to greet each other. In Awadh and Mithila you hear Sita Ram, Sita Ram. At areas of Bihar and Jharkhand, it becomes Jai Siya Ram. In Haryana, it is usually Ram Ram.
The idea behind this greeting to remember Sri Ram who is the 7th Avatar of Vishnu. Considered Maryada Purushottam, it is probably a way to remind each other and oneself to follow his conduct.
3. Jai Sri Krishna in Gujarat
If you have traveled in Gujarat, interacted with Gujarati families or even watched Gujarati content on TV, you know they all greet each other with ‘Jai Sri Krishna‘.
Krishna chose to make Dwarka his golden city, he ruled the world from here and continues to rule the hearts of the people of Gujarat.
In Dwarka, the greeting becomes more specific to – Jai Dwarkadhish.
4. Radhe Radhe in Braj Bhumi
In Braj, Radha rules. She is the queen and she is the Gopika. To reach Krishna too, you have to go through her. You don’t need to read or know anything about her. Just land anywhere in Braj and ‘Radhe Radhe‘ is not just a greeting but it means excuse me, leave my way, an exclamation and anything that does not need other words.
Jai Sri Radhe is a variant that you hear in temples of Braj sometimes.
5. Sat Sri Akaal in Punjab
A common greeting among Sikhs and Punjabis is Sat Sri Akaal. Sat means Truth, Sri is a respectful honorific and Akaal means timeless. So, you are essentially remembering the Timeless Truth or that Truth is Timeless and resides within all of us.
Sat Sri Akaal is a part of the clarion call given by Guru Gobind Singh – Jo Bole So Nihal, Sat Sri Akaal.
Another longer greeting is ‘Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh‘ – it is a reminder that all of us come from that one supreme being which is pure and at the end that is what remains.
6. Vanakkam – Tamil Nadu
Vanakkam is used by Tamil people living anywhere in the world. Essentially it means the same as Namaste. It is bowing down to or respecting the divine inside you. It comes from the root word – Vanagu meaning to bow down. Some literature mentions that Vanakkam specifically refers to the divine at the third eye located between your brows.
7. Khamma Ghani – Rajasthan
I first heard Khamma Ghani in some Hindi films based in Rajasthan. Next, I heard it during my visit to Udaipur. In my mind, it got associated with Rajasthan, but no one could explain what it meant. Now, I have two theories for this:
First is simple – Khamma comes from Sanskrit Kshama meaning forgiveness. Ghani means ‘a lot’. So, the greeting Khamma Ghani simply means – seeking forgiveness for any inadvertent hurt that may have been done or any lapses in hospitality.
The second source one is more historical – in 8th CE AD, 3 successive Mewari Kings, sharing the common name Khumaan, averted many attacks by Arabs. Due to this, the people in their kingdom lived happily for the next 1000 years or so. So, people started greeting each other ‘Khamma Ghani’ meaning ‘May we be blessed with many Khumaans’.
Take your pick for the meaning but when people say it with folded hands – it is a sweet greeting to exchange.
When used with elders Sa is added at the end – Khamma Ghani Sa.
8. Jule – Ladakh
When you travel through the Lahaul Spiti Valley in Himachal or do road trips in Ladakh, you are bound to be greeted with ‘Jule’, pronounced as Joo-Lay. It is a greeting mostly used by Buddhist dominated areas of the Himalayan valleys. It probably means ‘Respect’. I am not sure what it means and what is the root word. If you know, please share.
Just like Radhe Radhe, Jule too can mean thank you, please, excuse me or just Hello.
Tashi Delek is also used in some places.
9. Jai Jinendra – Jains across India
Jai Jinendra is used by all Jains to greet each other. We do not hear it very much as the Jains are a very small minority even within India and they usually use it among themselves only.
Jai Jinendra means victory to Jinendra or the Tirthankar, the souls who have won over their all their senses and have realized the ultimate knowledge.
This greeting directly bows downs to those who have real knowledge.
10. Swami Sharanam by followers of Ayyappa
Swami Sharanam or Swami Sharnam Ayyappa is actually a chant that is also used as a greeting by followers of Ayyappa when they meet each other. They start and end the conversation with this chant. Ayyappa followers are found in Kerala and all other south Indian states.
11. Aadab – Muslims primarily
Aadab is used to greet by followers of Islam and in places where Urdu is spoken. Could not find the meaning or intent of the word. If you know, please share.
12. Dhaal Karu in Himachal
This is another greeting from Himachal, though I will be honest, I am yet to hear it. However, my Himachali friends confirm this is used in Kullu Manali region of the state. The meaning is most probably similar to Namaste.
13. Narmade Har – On banks of Narmada
When you walk with the Narmada, the most common greeting you would hear is ‘Narmade Har’ – may the Narmada take away all your sorrows and sufferings.
Har Har Gange is also heard at places like Rishikesh, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, but not so consistently.
14. Jai Jai – Bikaner
During a trip to Bikaner, I heard the hotel greet us with ‘Jai Jai’. When I inquired, they said, this is how Bikaner greets people. I have not heard it outside the hotel, but it sounds very sweet, royal and full of Veer Rasa or emotion of bravery.
15. Pranam – for the elders
This is an India wide greeting used by the younger people to greet the elders. More often than not, it is complemented by touching the feet.
16. Region-based Greetings
Jai Bhole Nath – Varanasi. The city of Shiva has to have a greeting with his name
Jai Jagannath in Puri and around Odisha
and more
Jai Shri Mahakal in Ujjain
Jai Sri Radhe Govind in Jaipur
17. Hello
Hello is not really an Indian greeting but probably the most used, especially on phone and in urban areas. Before writing this post I had no idea about the origins of the word ‘Hello’, although we used it so many times every day. Apparently, it is not a greeting per se but a way of drawing attention. Another contender for this is Ahoy.
Read this shockingly Short History of Hello.
Hi, it seems is the shortened version of Hello.
18. Good Morning
Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening or Good Night is the neutral or should I say secular ways to greet anyone. I think I picked it up in school and continued using it till my corporate life. The Good Morning though got reduced to just Morning 🙂
19. Jai Jhulelal
Jai Jhulelal is used by the Sindhi community. Jhulelal is supposed to be the incarnation of Varun, the lord of the seas.
20. Jai Mata Di
It is used by the followers of the Devi or the divine feminine. Mata here refers to Jagadamba or the mother who is the creator, sustainer, and destroyer of everything that exists in this universe.
21. Ayubowan in Sri Lanka
Ayubowan in Sri Lanka comes from Sanskrit – Ayushman Bhava which means ‘May you have a long life’.
22. Sawasdee in Thailand
Sawasdee, the ubiquitous greeting of Thailand, also said with folded hands from Swasti which means wishing well.
All the greetings that have an origin in India or Sanskrit are said with folded hands formally, although informally sometimes you just say them.
Have I missed any Indian greeting? Tell us in the comments below.

Different Types of Tarpaulin -Understanding the material and its application.
The word “tarpaulin” comes from the two words- tar (black coating substance) and pall (fabric). Tarpaulin dates back to the 17th century when sailors used a tarred canvas/pall to cover objects on ships from sun damage and rain. With time tarpaulin has become the most commonly used material to provide protection against harsh weather conditions, dirt, and debris.
Today, the markets are flooded with various kinds of tarpaulin fabrics. Hence it is imperative to have a clear understanding of the different types of tarpaulin fabrics for appropriate application of the same.
Tarpaulin fabrics are differentiated by the materials and techniques used to manufacture them. Based on the material used, tarpaulins can be categorized as –Canvas, Plastic and polyvinyl.
-Canvas tarps are usually made out of 100% Cotton Single Duck fabric and are mainly used in transportation and industrial applications. Canvas tarps are made from natural cotton fibre and are eco-friendly. But they do not offer complete protection against water and are more prone to tear & puncture damage compared to other types.
Canvas tarpaulins are not 100% waterproof by nature and are more prone to rotting and damage by the sun. With the rise of 100% waterproof synthetic tarpaulin fabrics like polyethylene and polyvinyl tarps, cotton tarps are now dying a slow death.
-Polyethylene tarpaulin is the most widely used variant due to its high durability and 100% waterproofing qualities. As the name suggests, these tarps are made of Polyethylene - a plastic polymer of ethylene. They are highly tensile, flexible & lightweight by nature. Few brands like Silpaulin Star, Silpaulin (from Supreme Industries Ltd – No 1 plastics manufacturer in India) make eco-friendly poly tarps from 100% virgin polymers.
Poly Tarps are not only versatile in terms of usage but are also quite budget-friendly. Poly tarps are extensively used in agricultural, industrial as well as consumer sectors to manufacture various products such as – vehicle covers, relief shelters, greenhouse & polyhouse films, garden beds, construction covers, pond liners, fish farming tanks and many more.
-Polyvinyl tarpaulins are made of nylon and polyester fabric with a coating of polyvinyl chloride - hence the name. They are commonly called PVC tarps and are extremely durable, 100% water-resistant and have high tensile strength. PVC tarps provide the most versatile protective solution and are used for heavy-duty industrial as well as commercial applications.
PVC tarps are widely used to make ground covers, awning fabrics, pandal/shamiana covers, exhibition hanger panels etc. They are also used by construction & industrial workers to protect equipment & machinery. Due to their outstanding features, PVC tarps are also used by defence organisations such as the Indian Army to cover ammunitions and artilleries.
Mohan Tarp is the market leader for plastic tarpaulin in the Eastern Indian region, Nepal and Bhutan. We are proud to be associated with Supreme Industries Ltd – the No1 plastics manufacturer in India for more than 30 years. We are the sole distributors of Silpaulin & Silpaulin Star in West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa as well as Nepal & Bhutan. We also import PVC tarpaulin from the leading global technical textile manufacturers and suppliers throughout the Indian sub-continent.

Betaal Netflix Series Review, Download, Release Date, Cast, Trailer, and More
Netflix and Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies are coming together for their second collaboration after Bard of Blood last year. Releasing this week is Betaal, which is arguably the first zombie horror series out of India. It follows a counter-insurgency force that's attacked by a cursed undead British officer and his officers as they try to excavate a blocked tunnel. Betaal comes from the makers of Ghoul in Patrick Graham, who's the showrunner, co-director, and co-writer, and the studio Blumhouse, known for low-budget horror films such as Get Out and Paranormal Activity. Nikhil Mahajan (Baji) and Suhani Kanwar (Lipstick Under My Burkha) serve as director and writer alongside Graham, who has previously worked with Kanwar on the Netflix dystopian series Leila. For Netflix, Betaal will be the fifth original series from India in 2020, after the Jharkhand-based phishing drama Jamtara in January, the romantic drama Taj Mahal 1989 in February, the Imtiaz Ali-created crime drama She in March, and the Vir Das-led dark comedy Hasmukh in April. With Betaal out this weekend, here's all you need to know about the Netflix series, from review to cast. From Paatal Lok to Snowpiercer, TV Shows to Watch in May
Betaal Netflix release date
Betaal is out — on the day of Eid — Sunday, May 24 at 12:30pm on Netflix in India. As always, you will have the option to download all episodes. Betaal has a total of four episodes, each with a runtime around 50 minutes.
Betaal meaning
Betaal — also written as “Betal” — is the anglicised form of the Marathi word “बेताळ”, which is a folk deity worshipped in the western Konkan region of India. But for the purposes of the show, Betaal is drawn from the Sanskrit word “वेताल” / “Vetala”, which refers to reanimated corpses — that's zombies — who reside in charnel grounds and predict fortunes.
Betaal Netflix trailer
Netflix released the first and only trailer for Betaal in the second week of May, which set up the zombie horror series' premise and introduced its primary characters.
Betaal Netflix cast
Viineet Kumar (Mukkabaaz) leads the Betaal cast as Vikram Sirohi, the second-in-command of the Baaz squad of the CIPD (Counter Insurgency Police Department). In a mailed statement, Kumar said: “We had to undergo physical training, as one cannot carry this uniform without training and knowing how to give and receive commands. There were different knives and guns training as well, how to take position, formations etc. Many times, people would have bruises on their elbows and knees after the training.” Aahana Kumra (Lipstick Under My Burkha) stars alongside on Betaal as DC “Ahu” Ahluwalia (Aahana Kumra). She's the one with that huge scar on the right side of her face. Kumra said: “I was both terrified and excited by the idea of wearing a prosthetic piece since I've never done it before. The scar is so central to Ahlu's character. It speaks volumes about her, it makes you realise that there is a lot more to Ahlu's story than meets the eye. She has had a difficult past and has not yet lost hope.” Also part of the Betaal cast are Suchitra Pillai (Karkash) as Commandant Tyagi, the leader of the CIPD; Jitendra Joshi (Sacred Games) as Ajay Mudhalvan, a political fixer of sorts; Manjiri Pupala (Party) as Puniya, a tribal woman; and Syna Anand (Mere Pyare Prime Minister) as Ajay's daughter, Saanvi Mudhalvan. There are supporting roles for Jatin Goswami (Babumoshai Bandookbaaz) as Assad Akbar, Siddharth Menon (Chhappad Phaad Ke) as Nadir Haq, Yashwant Wasnik (Bajirao Mastani) as Sarpanch, and Savita Bajaj (Uski Roti) as Mausi. Puniya is among those village folk caught between the zombies and the CIPD. On her role, she said: “Shooting for a horror-thriller like Betaal has been a really great experience. I am essaying the role of a tribal woman who is consumed by anger and hatred for the CIPD which eventually leads to an interesting turn of events. It's a very compelling character and without giving away much all I can say is watch out for Betaal and the monster within us.” Mrs. Serial Killer, The Imitation Game, Room, and More on Netflix in May Betaal synopsis “While on a mission to displace the natives of Campa forest in order to build a highway, Sirohi and his squad unwittingly unleash the curse of Betaal mountain. A remote village quickly becomes the arena of a breathless battle when a two-century-old East India Company Colonel, infected with Betaal's curse, and his battalion of blood-thirsty zombie redcoats are released from their tomb, attacking anything with a pulse. The CIPD forces are pitted against the undead army that wreaks havoc on the people and threatens to end civilisation as we know it.”

This Is the Reason Modi will win the war protesters have waged against him CAA
This Is the Reason Modi will win the war protesters have waged against him CAA
Since skirmishes and conflagrations split there's a lot of unnecessary human suffering. Damage to public land. Regular life caused a standstill. Regrettably, in the present atmosphere, all over the country there's more smoke than light. The confusion appears worse confound even one of the best-informed. However, if anybody is in doubt what these disturbances are all around, I'd ask them to only look at a societal networking hashtag which has been trending -- #IndiaHatesModi. It's filled with this bile and loathing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi that anger within the newly passed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is left. Here is a good illustration from a renowned journalist: "It appears @narendramodi has started a war on India. Let's see if he survives or India!" This message has been appended to the hashtag #CAA_NRC_Protest.
This Is the Reason Modi will win the war protesters have waged against him CAA As is evident, it isn't that Modi has announced that the war on India. Rather a little part of well-organized Modi-haters has declared war on Narendrabhai. Obviously, some well-meaning protesters that have united in are exempt from this fee. Maybe, they do not despise Modi just as much. I am referring to segments of this childhood. However, the movies flaunting young protesters from the CAA just illustrate how ill-informed this significant section of the society is. Having educated young adults all of my life, I am aware they are in favor of everything great and seemingly idealistic. Truth, justice, equality, minority asserts LGBT rights, etc. And why don't you? What is the purpose of being youthful but cynical or despairing about the future of India let alone individual ailment? But these exact same young folks do not understand the first easy thing concerning the CAA. It isn't about disenfranchising any citizen of India. It's all about granting citizenship. To whom? The Act is all about giving, not taking away citizenship. What about those excluded from its purview, specifically Muslims? There are three or more Islamic nations in our area --Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh. The CAA is for all those people who have nowhere but India to flip to. Are there any no persecuted minorities in Islam? The Ahmadiyyas of Pakistan is just one example. They've been beaten, abused, mistreated, hounded, differently concentrated, and frequently charged with blasphemy, a capital offense in Pakistan. Their possessions destroyed, stores burned off, even their graves vandalized. In the event, the Ahmadiyyas, for example, also get refuge from India? Yes, they could. Even under present citizenship legislation. However, they wouldn't obtain the five decades' relief given to additional communities--Hindus, Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, and Parsis. The CAA doesn't debar Muslims from getting Indian citizens if they're religious refugees. They'd be still be covered by existing provisions of the citizenship legislation. People who believe this unfair ought to move an amendment to the CAA in Parliament instead of burning off buses on the roads. Sad to say, the actors and Bollywood celebrities from CAA, though both ill-informed, aren't as innocent as a portion of our childhood. Some have posted fake videos and pictures. Besides revealing unauthorized maps of India with no Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Chinese-occupied Aksai Chin. Not one of these, furthermore, seems to have read the Citizenship Amendment Act correctly. The CAA is just part of what the protests are actually about. This really is against Modi. Along with also his sarkar. When there's something which unites protesters throughout celebration, caste, religious, linguistic, or cultural lines it's Modi-hatred. That borders on the absurd and pathological. However, as our religious masters have cautioned us, too much abuse is self-corrosive. Modi-haters will also be united by the rights they've lost. The new India he attempts to usher in is completely threatening and alarming to Modi-haters. What troubles them about Modi's thought of India? It's merely 1 thing. This type of consolidation, as we've observed in the past ten years or longer, has got the capacity to alter the dynamics of Indian politics which its erstwhile post-Independence rulers are currently fighting for their own survival. These include caste satraps, agents of backwardness, Muslim bullies and rabble-rousers, regional feudalists, dynasts of stripes. As I was composing this, #IndiaHatesModi was overtaken by #RamlilaMaidan. The latter pushed beyond 50k tweets in hours of Prime Minister Modi's speech. So much for creating a lot of social networking tendencies. Prime Minister Modi has struck back against his detractors. An unholy and unruly combination of"urban Naxals", jihadists, negative Ambedkarites, etc --all backed by disgruntled opposition leaders and parties. Obviously, he also reminded people that it's the exact same Modi sarkar that's going to regularise unauthorized colonies in Delhi. If that's the case, how is it accused of being anti-people? Everybody who lives here has been craved. Why did we do so? Since we live for the love of the nation. Listening to me, I'm almost tempted to say that the war against Modi much more looks like a match. And he's winning this round also. Even though BJP has dropped Jharkhand, the pro-CAA rallies have accumulated force. Hindustan Newspaper - Aathwa Phera, the message of gender equality in society
Dentsu Impact has released its latest campaign for the leading Hindi daily – Hindustan, from the HT Media Group. Titled Aathwa Phera, the campaign focuses on the importance of equal status that both husband and wife should enjoy in marriage. Standing true to Hindustan's positioning of 'Tarakki ka Naya Nazariya', the campaign brings out a fresh perspective on how one looks at marriages. Targeting the Hindi speaking belt including UP, Bihar, Jharkhand etc., the initiative urges men to bring about a positive change in the dynamics of a marriage, wherein women tend to make more compromises than men today. It is a call to all men to support their wives by taking up more responsibilities at home. Commenting on the campaign, Rajan Bhalla, CMO, HT Media Group, said, "Hindustan is a progressive brand, and believes that new perspectives have the power to bring about positive change in the society. Aathwa Phera is an initiative that will connect deeply and emotionally and it will evangelize the core brand positioning of Tarraki Ka Naya Nazariya. Most importantly, it will bring home the message of gender equality in society." Speaking about the concept, Soumitra Karnik, CCO, Dentsu Impact added, "The narrative of gender equality has been there for a while now. However, we still hear stories every day that proves there is still a lot to be done to ensure equal status for women (especially in certain regions). Everyone talks about equality in the workplace, jobs, opportunities etc., but what about our homes? What about the husband treating his wife as an equal? This is where our concept came from. We want every man to take a vow that he will support his wife and ensure her equal status in a marriage." Megha Jain, Sr. Vice President, Dentsu Impact, said, "Aathwa Phera is not just a creative campaign for us. It is a campaign that should move people, relationships and move society. Our concept is very simple, and in that lies its power. One takes seven vows during a marriage, vows that are supposed to help a couple live a happy married life. We need to add one more vow to this, a vow that is critical for any marriage to be a happy one – the vow of equality. With this campaign, we want to encourage more and more couples to take this vow, and not just newly married couples, but people who have been married for any number of years. We chose to write this concept putting the onus on the man as we feel equality isn't something that a woman needs to fight for, it should come naturally in a marriage, and for this, it is more important to get men to embrace this." Apart from a film which is running on digital platforms currently, the campaign will spread across press, radio, outdoors and most importantly on-ground. With Karwa Chauth being celebrated today, the campaign is expected to garner a hugely positive response and many men taking the opportunity to promise equal rights to their wives. First 100 days of govt just a 'trailer', wait for the film: PM Modi
Current Affairs Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said development and the fight against corruption and terrorism during the first 100 days of the NDA 2.0 government was just a "trailer" of a fast-paced film, adding puri film toh abhi baaki hai", suggesting more concrete steps are on the anvil.

Myth of the small town and the cult of MS Dhoni - Click on link to subscribe my channel https://ift.tt/34vXvMA Facebook - https://ift.tt/2Vjiyz6 Twitter - https://twitter.com/HsrSports Pinterest - https://ift.tt/2ywdZIH Tumblr - https://ift.tt/2z5qwmL Blog - https://ift.tt/2VlBDRu #Sports #Sports_News #Tournament MS Dhoni. (TOI Photo) From Jharkhand's Ranchi to playing under the bright lights of international cricket before retiring at 39, MS Dhoni's journey has been punctuated by many milestones. But the further he has travelled on that remarkable journey, the closer he has remained to from where he began. In analysing the phenomenon, there is an almost immediate attribution that the cricketer's rise is indicative of a New India and the surge of the small town. However, cautions sociologist Shiv Visvanathan, there is a problem in locating Dhoni's success wholly in his small-town origins. Because the small-town myth is dying out, he says. "Something happened to the myth of the Indian mobility. We pushed it too far. I don't see the small-town make it big anymore because I think there is a reconsolidation of elites. At one level, there was this expectation and that was what made India look beautiful for while -- small town and mass society. But that is over. "The small-town idea, which could have been nursed by a different kind of economy, or a different idea of aspiration and mobility hasn't really worked. In fact, if anything showed it didn't work, it was Sushant Singh Rajput. He made all the money, but it didn't work as a myth. Don't forget when you talk about the small town, these small-town people are migrating abroad, not to other parts of India. The migrant inside India has failed. If the Covid taught us anything it is that the migrant inside is an anomalous citizen." Still, Visvanathan acknowledges that there are exceptions. "Dhoni makes sense because he remains Dhoni despite now being a legend. He's still a Ranchi boy, and in that sense, helps to retain a certain kind of small-town style. We have to look at the fact that we had four myths -- Cricket, Bollywood, Science and Democracy. Dhoni is the cricket myth. Dhoni made it because in a way we created and moved into an unreal world of a media. Cricket is not a real sport, cricket hyphenated with TV creates one of the most mythical roles one can think of," he adds. But can you really separate the roots from the man? Those who have observed Dhoni have often spoken of both his calmness and his inner confidence, two traits that seem to have never forsaken him. Is that famous confidence reflective enough of some sense of a small-town mindset? Media observer Santosh Desai feels his confidence is both small-town and unique to Dhoni. "It's to the extent to which, there are certain freedoms that you have in the smaller town, the talent from the smaller town not having too many benchmarks around them and not being burdened by too many expectations. They do not carry the load that the middle class does," says Desai. "Great ability as an explosive batsman is one thing," he adds, "but think about the fact that at a very young age, leading a team that has people like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid. All the stalwarts in Indian cricket, and you had this guy coming from nowhere, without any background and any pedigree as such, having that innate sense of confidence to not only manage but get along and carry everyone with him. It is a quality of being very involved in the action, but very detached from the consequences of those actions and focusing on process or an outcome, that characterises him in a way that is distinct." Maybe it is this unique amalgamation that has endeared Dhoni to Chennai, a metro and layered with its own small-town ethos. "If you look at local news reports on Dhoni," says Visvanathan, "they actually call Dhoni 'an honorary Tamilian'. How many people have ever got that label in recent years? No one." "Cricket becomes a substitute for Kollywood in this," he explains, "Chennai is a place that dies for leaders, of charismatic leaders, of a certain romantic type. Dhoni fulfils the function beautifully. He's in fact constructed like a film star who's a cricketing star. So far, the Chennai Super Kings thing has worked like a political party for him. Sitting in Chennai, you almost feel some regional party has begun on the streets for him. But one shouldn't liken it to a following for, say...

The Chaitra Parva or The Chhau Festival is a significant festival for the people of Odisha, which continues for three successive days. It is observed by the ‘Bhuiyans Tribe’ in many regions of Odisha, Italy, America, China, Denmark, Turkey, Mongolia, Germany, France...," says the older individual who has ended us in the square near the Seraikella Palace. He is 77 years old, gets an advantage of Rs 2,000 consistently from the Department of Culture, trains at the Sri Kedar Art Center, and, in another period, performed Chhau in the countries whose names he readily rambles. In a dim house of a teashop in Garage Chowk, two men are discreetly looking at my assistant and me. Finally, one of them exhausts his plastic cup of tea, drops it on the floor, centers to the following, and says, "This is my cousin. Chhaudancer. He's been to America, Greece, Bangladesh... Two world-notable things in Seraikella. One is Chhau. The other is laddoo." We endeavor the elaichi-improved sev laddoos and they're incredible. The cousin will act in one of the three arrivals of Seraikella's yearly Chaitra Parva Chhau festivity — the unpretentious one in the Palace porch, the organization bolstered field version, and the one some spot wherein is held in the grounds near the Shiva asylum. Seraikella, when an august state, is an all things considered, Oriya-talking town which was merged with Orissa after Independence yet in a little while got itself part of Bihar and is at present somewhat fumblingly held up in Jharkhand. "Our antecedents were Rajputs who came here from Kannauj," says the young-looking, T-shirt clad ruler of Seraikella, Pratap Aditya Singh Deo, when we stroll around the mansion to visit with him. "We're one of the longest-suffering magnificent lines in India. The group can be followed back to 1205 AD." The structure is going up outside for the stage from where the celebrated couple and their guests will see the displays. The illustrious living arrangement has reliably been solidly associated with Chhau and not comparably as a supporter. Bijoy Pratap Singh Deo—the more young kin of a past ruler — is a name that rehashes. He took an old military individuals structure, changed it into a delicate, expressive move like hit the move floor with excellent, persona improving cover, and pushed Seraikella Chhau on the periods of Europe in the late 1930s. Rulers themselves have been fantastic performers — Rajkumar Suddendhra is another majestic spoken in calmed tones. The master acknowledges the stylized points are up 'til now pressing, regardless. Chhau isn't just redirection. "You'll see today around night time when you see the best Chhau custom, the Jatra Ghat," he says. The ruler's uncle, Prince Braj, spots us wandering around the grounds and invites us into his wing. He lives alone in a once-luxurious set-up of rooms that are hardened in time. There are piles of dusty dim trunks stacked up with Chhau outfits, lounge chairs that appear as if they've been assaulted, pigeons roosting in cornices, and a board that says 'Seraikella Chhau Nritya Kala Mandir, 1970, Founder: Prince Braj Bhanu Singh Deo'. Staying outside and bearing the supreme pinnacle is the Prince's pride — a Chevy SRV — which he doesn't drive these days since he can't remain to replace the destroyed battery. "I'm locked in with some property inquiries with my family and that involves all my time. It murders ingenuity, that sort of thing." He used to move Chhau anyway ended in 1994 when the lawmaking body stamped him a 'people' expert. A short time later, while in travel to the Kharkei conduit, my host Guru Tapan Kumar Pattnayak, head of the Seraikela Chhau Academy, is uncovering to me that Jatra Ghat is a call to Ardhanariswara — the half Shiva, half Shakti standard. The services are planned to wake Shiva from his rest to play his damru and move the tandav of creation. Since the music of his damru has no tala, Shakti must be brought to secure the tala. The man who represents Shakti today around night time sits by the sundown conduit with a distracted verbalization while the distinctive bhagatas pull a red dress with silver directing over his head, slip massive silver arm groups onto his unstable wrists, and a short time later, with a stepped nonappearance of slyness, start to wind an unending game plan of improvements, embellishments and gatherings of red texture around his patient head. A pastor rambles, there is a generator mumbling and film cameras moving, much breaking of coconuts, commitments made to a long shaft bested with mango leaves, diyas and incense everywhere, and the creating racket of a 100-in number gathering, countless them fasting women. The point of convergence of the custom is a little ghata or pitcher of conduit water that is put to the essential bhagata's head — which is the explanation he is called Ghatawali. It is well past 12 PM when the procession takes off. The Ghatawali either moves in an enraged daze with his eyes shut, pounding capriciously into various fans, or everything aside from breakdown and is pulled along by the others. Women and children have squeezed roofs and displays to watch. In one way, a woman is out level on the ground having a savage and equivalent fit, her long hair thrashing wildly her face. The motorcade winds its way to the manor, where a youngster goat is surrendered in one clean stroke. It proceeds, with fantastic slowness and more finishes for goat-compensation and moving, to the Shiva asylum, where the pitcher of water is secured. (It will be revealed following a year and divinations made subject to what it resembles.) as per conviction, if the pitcher is dropped on the way, the Ghatawali will turn rakshasa and must be butchered. The article that was made over the poor man's head looks good now. Chhau itself is for all intents and purposes Far Eastern in its moderate magnificence and the atavistic venturing of the earlier night dies down when I watch rehearses at the covertly run Trinetra Chhau Dance Center. Two youngsters move a two section congruity — they appear, apparently, to be joined by imperceptible strings with the objective that every improvement in one triggers a taking note of sign in the other and the opposite way around. Without shroud or outfits their focussed self-osmosis is evident and heavenly to watch. At the festival in the Birsa Munda Stadium a few nighttimes later, the concealing and music rule. Seats have been spread outstanding up to the transient stage anyway a couple of individuals sit far away on field seats to watch, while others sit next to each other of the stage, showing up not to consider Chhau as much as staying up the whole night in the mela-like air. The presentations offer old stories, for instance, in the story of Chandrabhaga, bits of Kalidasa's Meghdoot, and various summons to nature — Phool aur Basant, Prajapati, Mayura. Krishna is a generally adored and is performed by kids whose jerky turns of events and outwardly impeded staggers make me consider an insane school play. Ace Tapan plays a fine Ratri (night) in a 12 PM blue spread which causes a lovely separation to the astounding white to get up of his accessory. It is satisfying to see him before a crowd of people after our various conversations about Chhau. Like by far most in this town he grew up with the move and picked — almost through a course in dentistry in Muzzafarpur — to make it his spine. As head of the Academy, his achievement appears to have been democratizing Chhau — he talks readily of the amounts of youths arranged, the spread makers and craftsmen he coordinates installments for, and how he successfully encourages youngsters to act in what was till starting late a male-simply structure. Anyway, Chhau's sublimity is continually depicted in regard to the previous greats. "Kedarnath Sahoo," says Guru Tapan, his voice sensitive. "It can't be depicted. The way wherein he used to take on the female structure." In the mansion, abutting where the presentations are being held, is a divider fixed with profoundly differentiating photos of the ceaselessly young and alluring managers of days of old. In any case, with the current government-moved emphasis on numbers and with three battling festivities happening each year in Seraikella, there is apparently a scattering of the energies around Chhau. Lamentably, it has all the earmarks of being incomprehensible that the children playing tottering Bala Krishnas today will quite a while from now stop people in the square with an emphasis of remote spot names.
