Jharkhand, located in eastern India, is renowned for its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and diverse and delectable cuisine. The state's tribal heritage and agricultural abundance have contributed to the fascinating blend of flavors and textures in Jharkhand's culinary traditions. Join us on a mouthwatering journey through some of the iconic dishes that showcase the unique and delicious Jharkhand cuisine.
Dhuska - A Must-Try Delicacy
Tumblr media
Dhuska is a traditional fried snack that is popular across Jharkhand. Made from a batter of powdered rice and chana dal (split Bengal gram), Dhuska is flavored with onions, green chilies, and various spices, and deep-fried until golden brown. The result is a crispy exterior and a soft, fluffy interior. It is often served with aloo dum (spicy potato curry) or ghugni (curried yellow peas) to add a delightful twist to the dish. The combination of flavors and textures makes Dhuska a must-try delicacy for anyone visiting Jharkhand.
Rugra - A Unique Earthy Delight
Tumblr media
Rugra is a unique dish that showcases the culinary expertise of Jharkhand. It is prepared using tender mushroom-like fungi that grow on anthills, giving the dish its distinct earthy flavor. The Rugra mushrooms are collected, cleaned, and cooked with onions, garlic, and a blend of spices. The result is a delectable dish with a slightly tangy and spicy taste. Rugra is typically enjoyed with roti (Indian bread) or rice and is known for its high nutritional value. It is not only a treat for the taste buds but also a source of vitamins and minerals.
Bamboo Shoot Curry (Karil) - A Refreshing Monsoon Dish
Tumblr media
Bamboo Shoot Curry is a popular dish in Jharkhand, especially during the monsoon season when bamboo shoots are abundantly available. Fresh bamboo shoots are sliced, boiled, and then cooked with mustard oil, onions, garlic, turmeric, and other spices. The curry has a unique, slightly tangy taste and a crunchy texture. It pairs well with steamed rice and adds a refreshing element to the meal. Bamboo Shoot Curry not only satisfies the appetite but also offers several health benefits, including aiding digestion and boosting the immune system.
Pittha - A Festive Dumpling Delight
Tumblr media
Pittha is a traditional dumpling dish that is prepared during festivals and special occasions in Jharkhand. The dumplings are made from a rice flour dough, which is stuffed with a savory filling. The filling can vary, but popular options include roasted chana dal (split Bengal gram), sesame seeds, grated coconut, and jaggery (unrefined cane sugar). The dumplings are then steamed and served hot. Pittha has a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and a delightful blend of sweet and savory flavors. It is often enjoyed with ghee (clarified butter) or tangy tomato chutney. Pittha represents the rich culinary heritage of Jharkhand and is a true delight for food enthusiasts.

The Endangered Dance Form Of West Bengal
Dance, art, and culture and an adda at the local chai shop make a bangali, a pure bangali. Let's have an adda over tea about the endangered dance form, Chhau dance, also spelled Chhou dance. It is found in other regions of India like Jharkhand, and Odisha with different forms and names- Purulia Chhau of West Bengal, the Seraikella Chhau of Jharkhand, and the Mayurbhanj Chhau of Odisha. The dance includes everything from a structured dance with Shaivist, Shakti, and Vaishnavist religious themes to a celebration of martial arts, acrobatics, and athletics done in the festive themes of a folk dance.
Tumblr media
It is customarily performed by an all-male group, and the dance may be a syncretic dance form that evolved from the blending of classical Hindu dances and the customs of long-extinct local tribes. The dance is remarkable and unites individuals from various socioeconomic levels in a joyful and religious atmosphere. Performed by male dancers who trained under Gurus or Ustads (masters), or who come from families of traditional artists. Its roots can be found in indigenous dance and combat styles. The basic language of Chhau dance consists of khel (fake combat moves), chalis and topkas (stylized animal and bird gaits), and uflis (movements based on a country housewife's everyday tasks). Oral transmission is used to pass on the knowledge of dance, music, and mask-making. It lasts all night long and is performed in an area known as an akhada or asar.
Tumblr media
Local mythology, folklore, scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as abstract concepts, are some of the topics covered by the dancers' repertory. The vibrant music is characterized by the rhythm of indigenous drums like the dhol, dhumsa and kharka and the melody of the mohuri and shehnai. The majority of the dancers are from the Munda, Mahato, Kalindi, Pattnaik, Samals, Daroga, Mohanty, Acharya, Bhol, Kar, Dubey, and Sahoo communities. Musicians come from the Mukhi, Kalindi, Ghadhei, and Dhada groups. They take part in the instrument production as well. Communities of traditional painters known as Maharanas, Mohapatras, Sutradhars are involved in the making of these masks.
Tumblr media
Not only were Paika and Natua the forerunners of Chhau dance (particularly Purulia style), but Nachni dance also had a significant influence on the way Chhau is known today. The female moves and gaits used in Chhau dance are virtually solely taken from Nachni dance. The Chhau dance was added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2010. The Government Chhau Dance Centre and the Mayurbhanj Chhau Nritya Pratisthan were created by the Government of Odisha in 1960 and 1962, respectively, in Seraikella and Baripada.

Happy shardiya navratri,
So the festive season has officially begun, huh.. where did the year go? Anyways we're not here for that.
I see everyone sharing their thoughts an excitement about navratri/Durga puja and i kind of want to share my own.
Navratri in my house is vastly different from that in Gujarat/west bengal/jharkhand, basically all the states popular for their loud and colorful celebration.
We dont necessarily play garba at nights or organise huge pandals for a community get together. I mean we do have pandals and all here, and people throng in huge numbers but it's not part of tradition. It's more of an acknowledgement to traditions of other states.
In fact my experience of Navratri is very different and subdued. Here, we get up early and we all feel the floral incense in the air, a little more than usual. You can easily hear people doing the path of Durga saptashati out loud, something we don't do normally (i mean the out loud part).
The atmosphere isn't loud but it's impactful.
The weather is a little more pleasant than it was on ganesh chaturthi. I specifically wait for the kirtan in a nearby temple, every evening, which is now a norm.
The idol of maa Durga is quite possibly the most beautiful. New lehenga for her, new bangles, new mukut,, everything changes but somehow the change feels more reassuring than daunting.
Personally I listen to Lalitha sahasranamam every day, if possible.
And it's just, it's a vibe that i can't possibly put in words but it's very specific to navratri.
We have a temple here called Tapeshwari devi and oh my god, once you step foot there you will change. The experience will imprint on your soul. I remember I went there a few years back for the first time, it felt as if I've gone back in time.. i wish I would get a chance this year, it seems highly unlikely but I'm hoping.
I know a lot of people don't believe that uttar kand was originally part of Ramayana but Tapeshwari devi is dedicated to maa Sita. It is said she and three other women used to sit the for their tap. There are four idols here and no one knows which one is of sita.
Then there is this 1700 year old temple with 12 idols. The story is something i don't understand.
What I'm trying to say is that we have several centres of spiritual significance, dedicated to divine feminine but somehow instead of going the way temples of Bengal did, the expression here became something else entirely.
Durga puja is a tapas for artisans and a place for community to collaborate and bond.
Navratri is here is not like that. Sure you will find a fair kind of setting outside the temples but it's not the same.
This has become the time to seek wisdom but on your own, in a way that might feel isolating. Instead of focusing a part of energy on epressig the devotion in beautiful artistic ways, that energy is directed inwards entirely.
Sigh. Anyways, my rant is not over I've just run out of words. || Masterlist || part 2
