Navigating from Exploration to Execution: India's Coal Auction Journey
Some projects transcend typical assignments—they become journeys marked by detailed assessments, critical analysis, and the excitement of uncovering value. Our recent engagement exemplifies this journey perfectly.
When we accepted the challenge to assess coal blocks on behalf of one of the Big Four consulting firms, ultimately serving a major public sector power producer, we understood this was more than crunching numbers. It was about making strategic, informed decisions. The 10th/20th tranche (MMDR/CMSP) commercial coal auction, organized by India's Ministry of Coal, offered an impressive portfolio of 67 coal blocks. On October 16, 2024, we successfully completed our detailed techno-commercial evaluation for several blocks auctioned under the 10th Tranche MMDR Act, 1957/20th Tranche CMSP Act, 2015.

Plan India Children Literary Festival
Plan India is back with the 2nd Edition of its flagship National Children Literary Festival (CLF) to be held at Hyderabad during 29-31 January. The Festival provides a platform for children to discover the joy of reading and reimagine gender in textbooks, stories, and images. It engages children to play a central role in ensuring that girls and boys are able to learn, lead, decide and thrive.
CLF’s goal is to promote child-led advocacy with educationists, policy-makers teachers’ associations, writers, story-tellers, and publishers thus promoting quality education, joyful classroom learning and gender equality in children’s literature, stories, and textbooks.
The 1st Edition of the National Children Literary Festival was organised in April 2018 in Lucknow which was participated by more than 300 school children, experts and development professionals from 10 states.
The 2nd Edition at Hyderabad would see the participation of 130 girls and boys aged 11 to 15 years from Plan India’s programmes in states like Bihar, Delhi, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana.
Before the national event in Hyderabad, more than 100,000 girls and boys from schools in Plan India supported communities would participate in regional activities at the school, block and state levels. During the regional activities, children would engage in reading, understanding the concepts of gender equality and learning to communicate through creative writing and art workshops.
Objective of the National Children Literary Festival
Takeovers can help raise awareness, begin a meaningful process with stakeholders and create lasting change. In other words, we hope to:
Build the national collective of children, educationists, policy makers, teachers, writers, parents, and School Management Committees to promote reading habits in school children.

JSW Group’s Massive Copper Smelter Project: Fueling India's Green Energy Ambition

The JSW Group, led by industrialist Sajjan Jindal, is diversifying its portfolio by entering the copper industry, a strategic move aligned with India’s growing demand for critical minerals in renewable energy and technology sectors. The conglomerate has committed ₹26 billion ($301 million) to develop two copper mines in Jharkhand through a 20-year Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) agreement with state-owned Hindustan Copper, extendable by an additional decade. The mines, expected to partially commence operations by the second half of FY 2026–27, aim to achieve an annual ore capacity of 3 million tonnes at full ramp-up. A copper concentrator plant is also planned to streamline operations.
Smelter Ambitions and EV Integration
Beyond mining, JSW is investing approximately ₹120 billion to establish a 500,000 metric ton (MT) copper smelter in Odisha by 2028–29. This facility, sourcing copper concentrate from Peru, Chile, and Hindustan Copper, will scale up to 1 million MT by 2033–34. The smelter will directly supply copper for JSW’s upcoming electric vehicle (EV) and battery manufacturing projects, positioning the group to capitalize on India’s green energy transition. Pankaj Kumar, CEO of JSW’s copper division, is set to negotiate concentrate supply deals during a visit to Chile, underscoring the project’s global supply chain integration.
Competitive Landscape and Domestic Demand
JSW’s entry intensifies competition in India’s copper market, dominated by the Aditya Birla Group’s Hindalco Industries—operator of the world’s largest single-location smelter—and the Adani Group, which recently commissioned a $1.2 billion smelter in Gujarat. Meanwhile, Vedanta’s Sterlite Copper plant in Tamil Nadu, shuttered since 2018 due to environmental disputes, previously contributed 400,000 MT annually. Its closure has exacerbated India’s reliance on imports, which now account for 500,000 MT of the 750,000 MT annual consumption. Domestic refined copper production, currently at 555,000 MT, falls short of demand, a gap projected to widen as India’s push for clean energy and EVs could double copper demand by 2030.
Strategic Partnerships and Policy Alignment
Under the MDO agreement, Hindustan Copper will provide technical expertise and receive a revenue share, while JSW manages mine development. This partnership aligns with India’s 2023 designation of copper as a critical mineral, emphasizing self-reliance in materials vital to decarbonization. JSW’s expansion underscores its broader diversification beyond steel into energy, cement, paints, and automotive sectors, reflecting a calculated bet on India’s industrial and green energy future.
By integrating mining, smelting, and downstream manufacturing, JSW aims to secure a vertically integrated supply chain, reducing import dependency and positioning itself as a key player in India’s transition to sustainable technologies.

Under this collaboration, both Sanmat and the Tribal Welfare Commissioner of Jharkhand will aim to achieve the scale required to address any adverse impact in case of a pandemic or disaster and ensure support to the public systems and the communities residing in the 992 hard-to-reach areas in 55 blocks across 13 districts in the state. While Sanmat will be responsible for executing programs, the Tribal Welfare Commissioner will monitor and supervise the execution under the MoU. NGO Sanmat Signs MoU with Tribal Welfare Commissioner for Tribal Welfare in Jharkhand As part of this collaboration, Sanmat will be supporting the Tribal Welfare Commissioner’s office in the elimination of Sickle Cell Disease and Epilepsy by spreading awareness and mass screening, followed by a proper treatment plan and to combat the spread and management of sickle cell anemia, it has initiated sickle cell information and treatment centers in 14 welfare hospitals. With regard to the state’s healthcare initiatives, Sanmat will support the design and development of interventions to improve the health and nutrition of tribal children, pregnant ladies, mothers, and seniors of tribal communities through special mobile medical unit operations. Sharing his excitement at the collaboration, Mr. Amit Kumar Choubey, CEO of Sanmat, said, “We are glad and grateful to TWC for giving us this opportunity to serve the people in Jharkhand. We have impacted approximately 2.31 crore lives nationally, with almost 23 lakh individuals being affected directly by our initiatives in Jharkhand, and I am sure this MoU will be a great driving force to reach out to more people. Bridging the gap between government policies and their implementation is core to Sanmat’s mission, and we will continue to impact lives through effective implementation across regions and sectors.” With regards to the livelihood and tribal welfare aspects, under the MoU, Sanmat will be working with subjudice prisoners, providing legal support to them while simultaneously imparting skills training to include them in their livelihood initiatives and has also created a pool of 16 advocates, with the Tribal Welfare Commissioner set to provide space for court practice. RDB Infrastructure and Power Limited, formerly known as RDB Realty & Infrastructure Limited, has marked a significant milestone in its journey by securing two prestigious contracts from the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). These awards, underlined by their strategic significance, position RDB Infrastructure as a key player in India’s renewable energy landscape.
The contracts, awarded through competitive bidding, reflect the company’s expertise and readiness to contribute to the nation's green energy initiatives. The tender process, issued by DVC on July 19, 2024, culminated in the issuance of two Letters of Award (LoA) on January 10, 2025. These contracts entail both Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) responsibilities for solar energy projects.
The first contract focuses on the EPC component, including the design, engineering, supply, erection, and commissioning of Grid-Connected Rooftop Solar (RTS) Plants with an approximate cumulative capacity of 10 MWp. These plants will be installed on the rooftops of various buildings within the DVC command area, spanning the states of West Bengal and Jharkhand. This initiative underscores a commitment to harnessing underutilized rooftop spaces to generate sustainable energy while reducing the carbon footprint.
The second contract pertains to the O&M of these solar plants for five years following their operational acceptance. The scope of this contract includes comprehensive maintenance, supply of spare parts, insurance, and all necessary repairs to ensure uninterrupted performance.
