I finished reading A Map for Wrecked Girls by Jessica Taylor the other day. I did enjoy it quite a bit, though I had a few issues with it. Mainly with the characters themselves. I never really connected with any of them on a substantial level. I did enjoy the story quite a bit though. And even though the beginning was on the slower side, I thought the rest of the story had a great pace and kept me entertained til the end. It's a fun end-of-summer read for sure. My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ . FAA Medical Reform 2017

On December 22nd, 2016 the Federal Aviation administration released its final ruling on the medical certification of small aircraft pilots. Many of you have called, emailed and messaged me regarding the implications of medical reform and your ability to exercise your medical privileges.

So let's dive into this, I promise to keep it short and sweet. Which many of you “A” type personalities will go crazy over. :) Love you.

1st - This does not affect pilots with a 1st or 2nd class medical, this reform is only for pilots who intend to operate under the "OLD" 3rd class medical privileges now being defined as:  

A. The Covered aircraft is carrying not more than 5 passengers.

B. The individual is operating the covered aircraft under visual flight rules or instrument flight rules.

C. The flight, including each portion of that flight, is not carried out-

for compensation or higher, including that no passenger or property on the flight is being carried for compensation or hirer

 at an altitude that is more than 18,00 feet above mean sea level

outside the United States, unless authorized by the country in which the flight is conducted; or

- at an indicated airspeed exceeding 250 knots (288 MPH equivalent).

 So if your operation fits within these perimeters then this reform is for you.

If you are already operating under a current 1st, 2nd or 3rd class medical intending to operate as a 3rd class medical under the previous stated terms, then you need to continue operating under that medical until it expires as a 3rd class medical. Keep in mind the that a 1st class medical just reverts to a 2nd class medical when it expires and a 2nd class medical subsequently reverts to a 3rd class upon expiration.

 THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE SINGLE CLASS LIMITED MEDICALS (Limited for 1st class medical only)  

Once your medical expires you must comply with the new medical reform.

 To be sure you qualify, you must answer YES to these questions:  

 1. Do you have a current driver's license?  Yes or No?

               Yes, Continue to the next question.

No, You must obtain a valid, state issued driver's license.

  2. Was your last medical suspended, revoked, withdrawn or denied?

             No, Continue to the next question.

                     Yes, You must continue working with the FAA on proper medical           certification to obtain a valid desired class medical.  

3. Have you developed neurological, mental health or cardiac problems since your last medical issuance? (THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE ITEM 48- Gender Dysphoria)

              No, Continue to the next question.

                       Yes, You must obtain a medical under the “Special Issuance” guidelines as previously outlined in the aviation medical examiner's guide.

4. Have you held a valid FAA medical certificate, 1st, 2nd or 3rd class medical (regular or special issuance) any time within the 10 years prior to July 15th, 2016?

              Yes, Congratulations you qualify under the new medical reform to spread your wings and fly… Safely and within the guidelines previously stated.

 + If you have never held a medical certificate you will need to go through the medical certification process prior to the medical reform of July 2016.

+ If it has been more than 10 years you will also need to go through the medical certification process prior to the medical reform of July 2016

2nd - Many of you have asked how does this affect my Item 48. Gender Dysphoria status under my 3rd class medical?

         Good News: It doesn’t. You just let your current 3rd class medical expire and comply with the new medical reform. 

 1st and 2nd Class medicals are under the same rules as before.

If you have never held a medical and fall under the Item 48. Gender Dysphoria guidelines, then you must still comply with Item 48. Gender dysphoria special issuance certification.

  On May 1st, 2017 the Federal Aviation Administration will release the basic med online information that will allow you to complete your medical under the medical reform. We will update you as this becomes available.
