JESSE LEBOURDAIS: GRIEF INTENSITY FRIENDSHIP
Grief Intensity Friendship – Jesse LeBourdais Release Date: July 10th, 2017
Track Listing:
1. Gaines 2. Make It Boring 3. Flames 4. Easy Target 5. Friends With Choruses 6. I Do it All the Time 7. It’s Fun! 8. Quite Distant 9. You’re Worth the Drive 10. Streetcar 11. You Were a Rifle 12. The Dirt
Vancouver rocker Jesse LeBourdais’ fourth album, Grief Intensity Friendship, was birthed from “the pain of loss, the strength of friendship and the excitement of things to come.” Released this past July, the collection was recorded at Vancouver’s Rain City Recorders with his backing band, The Long Winter, and engineer/producer Jesse Gander. On Grief Intensity Friendship, the artist seamlessly blends folk-style storytelling with the intensity and emotion of punk rock. The album stems from a place of loss, but blossoms into a nostalgic and hopeful theme.
The album illustrates the artist's examination of his feelings, his conscience, and innermost thoughts. It contains very clearly laid out reflections within LeBourdais, and these can be heard from the very first song, “Gaines.” He sings, “I pray for nothing, it’s fucking useless but I mostly think people will do what’s right / When I’m mistaken, I simply move on. I trust my friends and hope they do the same.” The song zones in on the people around him, the journey of life, and what they’ve learned in relation to the road ahead.
"Quite Distant" also carries some heavy self-reflections. The line, "Sometimes I can be quite distant and I let go of what I really should hold on to / and I forget what I really should remember," is all sorts of powerful, and shows a realization within LeBourdais. “You Were a Rifle” is where LeBourdais’ storytelling is truly at its best. He narrates the pain of losing a close friend, and where he was at the time of his burial. He puts emphasis on what his friend would have wanted him to do, and celebrates the life of his friend through the metaphor of a rifle.
In Grief Intensity Friendship, LeBourdais takes listeners by the hand and walks them through his experiences with vivid storytelling. What's great about his lyrics is that he explains the stories scene-by-scene, and then reshapes and summarizes them into a metaphor. His gift for storytelling makes it easy for listeners to capture his emotions, and his level of transparency shows that he emulates what punk's all about.

Jon Creeden / Jesse LeBourdais - 'Home' Split 7"
Jon Creeden [Stratford] and Jesse LeBourdais [Vancouver] are two of Canada's hardest working solo folk punk acts. This is a record that expresses the love and hardships of the road, the sacrifices we all make, and everything between.

Episode #229
Hello Hello Hello!
This first pop punk block is the best pop punk block I’ll play all year mainly because it has best tracks from new releases by The Dopamines (Cincinnati, OH, USA), The Priceduifkes (Belgium), The Lillingtons (Newcastle, WY, USA), Capital Youth (Geneva, Switzerland) and Isotopes (Vancouver, BC, Canada).
Then I previewed an acoustic show which featured Off With Their Heads, Fire Next Time and Jesse LeBourdais.
And then one more preview of a show which featured great locals Reds, The Greatest Sons, The Remedials.
GREEN DAY - Welcome To Paradise [Dookie] THE DOPAMINES - Everybody Dies [Tales of Interest] THE PRICEDUIFKES - It's raining shit (Hallelujah) [Goathorse] THE LILLINGTONS - Rubber Room [Project 313] CAPITAL YOUTH - In A Maze [Lemonade] ISOTOPES - Morganna [1994 World Series Champions] OFF WITH THEIR HEADS - Clear the Air [Won't Be Missed] FIRE NEXT TIME - Prophets [Cold Hands] JESSE LEBOURDAIS - Flames [New Album] REDS - Underhill [Our Freedom Day] THE GREATEST SONS - My Name Is Short [Play Through The Pain, Sing Through The Strain] THE REMEDIALS - Cigarettes & Fellatio [The End Is Here] AGAINST ME! - How Low [Searching For A Former Clarity]

JESSE LEBOURDAIS: LONG WINTER
Track Listing:
1. Welcome 2. Breathing In/Out 3. Take Me Home 4. Kensington 5. Burnt Out Frame 6. The Valley I Am From 7. Things Will Get Better 8. Falling Behind 9. All But Gone 10. Penance 11. Simple 12. The First Time I Screamed
“There’s a pile of records sitting on my floor right now...”
So begins the opening lyrics to Jesse LeBourdais’ latest LP, Long Winter. Already a seasoned musician with several releases to his name, Jesse’s music has elements of folk, punk, and bluegrass. His musical influences are self-described as, “the sounds of lost songs. The harmony of drunken friends. A lot of music, and two bears ****ing in the bushes while listening to Tony Bennett.”
This combination of genres is not something I’m used to, except for a couple of stripped-down shows from otherwise non-acoustic punk bands. It was particularly interesting to discover how this unique blend would be done from a solo artists perspective: exactly how raw, refined, and redesigned this style would be.
Jesse’s voice works very well in carrying this album. Being a solo singer-songwriter, a voice can make or break an album, particularly in a defining genre such as this one. His emotion and skills are both represented in his vocals, and they do not disappoint. It’s slightly folk, slightly punk, and slightly angry – defining Jesse LeBourdais. He also plays the guitar, organ, and piano on this album. This shows he’s skilled in many instruments and truly is a social musician: the music recorded is mostly played by him. He’s very good at what he does.
The lyrics are very driven and emotional. Although perhaps a bit melodramatic or even corny at times, they are a definitive part of the album and representative of the singer’s emotional state. It’s obvious that Jesse takes his songwriting seriously and works hard on the lyrical content, truly expressing himself and qualities of this genre. Most of the song lyrics are downright poetic, deep, and sound like a beautiful emotionally charged essay written straight from the heart. Whether the lyrics are cheesy or deep, they match seamlessly with the music and add a lot of beauty to this album.
About half of the songs are closer to punk than any other genre and have a somewhat hard, mostly non-acoustic element to them. The rest are straight-up “three guitar strings and the truth” type. This is not a bad thing, as these songs are where Jesse truly expresses his voice and songwriting skills. Less complex songs are where a singer really shines, and this is particularly true in a solo album.
I’d love to see some of these songs done non-acoustically: they lend themselves well to being more refined and punk. The riff on “Take Me Home” guides the entire song and sounds fantastic, but it’s done by an acoustic guitar. I can only imagine how great it would sound electric – perhaps seeing Jesse live would be a really cool experience. It would certainly further showcase the talent he shows here.
Overall, Jesse has created an impressive and driven album. His dedication and emotional outreach is clearly demonstrated and performed nicely. I’d love to see further musical explorations of his in a live show or in his future work. This LP is definitely worth checking out for any fan of indie/punk/folk music.

Well I'm sure you've got your reason, and I know that I've got mine. But right now I don't give a fuck about either. I feel hurt, I feel rejected, I feel used, and I feel played. and tonight none of this is getting better.
