Nominees announced for the 2023 Ringo Awards

Amalgama Space Zombie: The Galaxy’s Most Wanted! #1 Action Lab Danger Zone 2020 Written by Jason Martin Illustrated by Winston Young Coloured by Geraldo Filho Lettered by Jerome Gagnon    Mature Readers’ Only    The start of a new story arc! She may be the most wanted “woman” in the galaxy, but she’s also the most dangerous. And now that Amalgama is hunting her bounty hunters, does anyone, or anything, stand a chance?      I am not entirely sure what I absolutely love about this series but then it really doesn’t matter because I do love it and I will not pass up the opportunity to read it.  Sure she’s scantily clad and yes she swears with every other word out of her mouth but ya know what she’s unapologetic, has three voices in her head and seems to have fun regardless of what or who she’s destroying.  There is this infectious quality to what we see throughout the book that just elevates the enjoyment for the reader.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is laid down extremely well.  While we think that this is pretty straightforward it really isn’t as there are layers to the story that permeate throughout the entire run so far.  I like it because while you can understand them when you see them you can still read this as your introduction and not feel lost at all.  The character development we see is seriously good, strong and entertaining.  Normally we get to see how they act and react to situations and circumstances which help to flesh them out more but honestly I think here the more telling moments are seeing her with Troo.   The pacing here is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing a day in her life it is easy to see how all of this works together to create the story’s ebb & flow.      How the book is structured and how this affects the flow of the story is so well done.  This is the unconventional conventional challenge and it works on so many levels.  What I see here shows a level of talent that you might not expect because to do this with the quality of storytelling that we see is insanely good.  I know too many of you don’t take Action Lab seriously enough, but with multiple Eisner nominees, awardees and books that have been optioned for film and television you need to be reading this.    The interior artwork here is really rather wonderful.  I love the way we see the linework here and how the varying weights are being utilised to showcase the detail work.  There is also this incredible display of creativity and imagination as well in not only some of the character designs but in the utilisation of Amalgama’s abilities as well.  I am also a huge fan of the way we see backgrounds being utilised within these pages.  They add ambiance, atmosphere and bring us this depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this remarkable eye for storytelling.  The colour work is fantastic.  We see some beautiful gradation effects as well colour blocking happening here and the various hues and tones being utilised really makes this super gorgeous. ​    Girls just wanna have fun and every girl has fun in different ways.  Amalgama is a girl who like the Honey Badger doesn’t give a damn!  That is a part of her charm and her appeal is the whole no fucks given attitude.  This is one of my favourite series and I never expected that to happen so what have you really got to lose?  Give it a go will you.

“ADHD is a prime example of a fictitious disease.”

These were the words of Leon Eisenberg, the “scientific father of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder),” in his last interview he gave before his death at age 87 in 2009.

 (While some have described Dr. Eisenberg’s statement as an “exaggeration,” many doctors are coming to the belated conclusion that ADHD is often “over diagnosed” by the use of “fuzzy diagnostic practices.” Harvard psychologist Jerome Kagan, who is one of the world’s leading experts in child development, states:

“Let’s go back 50 years. We have a 7-year-old child who is bored in school and disrupts classes. Back then, he was called lazy. Today, he is said to suffer from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). . . . Every child who’s not doing well in school is sent to see a pediatrician, and the pediatrician says: “It’s ADHD; here’s Ritalin.” In fact, 90 percent of these 5.4 million kids don’t have an abnormal dopamine metabolism. The problem is, if a drug is available to doctors, they’ll make the corresponding diagnosis.)

Eisenberg made a luxurious living off of his “fictitious disease,” thanks to pharmaceutical sales. Coincidentally, he received the “Ruane Prize for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Research. He has been a leader in child psychiatry for more than 40 years through his work in pharmacological trials, research, teaching, and social policy and for his theories of autism and social medicine,” according to Psychiatric News.

Yes, it was even admitted that they are his THEORIES. The medical industry is using the guise of helping children to depersonalize and disconnect our children from a healthy, normal upbringing. Parents are placing their children on these drugs and subjecting them to what the world has to offer, when in fact all these children are looking for is their parents in hopes of being the blessing that God intended them to be.

In the United States, 1 out of 10 boys among 10-year-olds takes medication for ADHD on a daily basis . . . with increasing tendency.

American psychologist Lisa Cosgrove and others reveal the facts in their study “Financial Ties between DSM-IV Panel Members and the Pharmaceutical Industry.” They found that “of the 170 DSM panel members 95 (56 percent) had one or more financial associations with companies in the pharmaceutical industry. One hundred percent of the members of the panels on ‘Mood Disorders’ and ‘Schizophrenia and Other Psychotic Disorders’ had financial ties to drug companies.”

And they are reaping major benefits from this “fictitious disease.” For example, the assistant director of the Pediatric Psychopharmacology Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital and associate professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School received “$1 million in earnings from drug companies between 2000 and 2007.”

Marc-André Gagnon and Joel Lexchin, a long-time researcher of pharmaceutical promotion, performed a study which shows that the U.S. pharmaceutical industry spent 24.4 percent of the sales dollar on promotion, versus 13.4 percent for research and development in 2004. That is almost twice as much money to push their drugs on people than the amount of research to make sure it they’re safe!

 Dr. Edward C. Hamlyn, a founding member of the Royal College of General Practitioners, in 1998 stated, “ADHD is fraud intended to justify starting children on a life of drug addiction.”

Jellyfish UFOs

In his book Sky Creatures: Living UFOs, researcher Trevor Constable wrote about “UFO amoebas” or “amoebae-like life forms existing in the plasma state” in outer space. Ivan T. Sanderson, a zoologist, played with the notion that UFOs might be living creatures in his book, Uninvited Guests. Jerome Clark calls them “space animals.” 

As strange and bizarre as this sounds, we leave you with this last UFO case, from Springfield. It was the summer of 2003, and Norm Gagnon was with his wife, driving east on the Franconia Springfield Parkway. At 11:00 a.m., near the Springfield Metro, the couple saw two weird formations in the blue sky, which Gagnon wrote about online [hometown.aol.com/facadefx/JellyfishUFO.html]. 

At first I thought they were hot air balloons but then I observed that they were much like vapor clouds, and somewhat thick in consistency since both objects were casting a shadow. The shape of these UFOs were rather identical form one another, their tops were circular in shape, as domes, and both had what appears to be ‘trails’ at their bases, similar to tentacles from a jellyfish, almost organic in texture. Both objects were motionless as they floated above and they emitted no sound . . . Sorry to say that I didn’t have my camera handy. 

So perhaps UFOs aren’t really a problem for astrophysicists or military investigators but instead fall within the realm of some new science called cryptoastrobiology.

The poet and former SFSU student Jerome Gagnon has created annual Kay Boyle Poetry of Witness Award for a poem of any length that addresses the theme of witness and /or social justice.

Poems must be submitted by graduate or undergraduate students of the Creative Writing Department at San Francisco State University between March 1 and April 1.  

Selected by a faculty member of the Creative Writing Department, the winner will also be asked to read the poem at the annual Student Awards reading.   

The winner will be announced on April 15.

Group Show

July 8th to 10th (2017)

TAP-1 was a project accomplished in July of 2017. It was organized by Marx Ruiz-Wilson with great help from Audrey Anne-Morin, Jonathan Jimenez, David Jaime Ruiz, Victor Garibay, Marcela Borquez, Morgane Clémént-Gagnon and all the artists listed below. The project was held in the basement of an apartments complex which is located in the limits between Milton-Parc and the Plateau area in Montreal, Canada.

The acronym title of the show “TAP” makes reference to a theory in evolutionary biology called The Adjacent Possible. In this theory the main argument is that by recombining existent data, materials, variables, etc. the limits of a given system expand and this phenomena repeats again and again giving access to new possibilities.

I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone involved in this project for their trust, hard work and time spent in making it a reality.

Away We Go is a American comedy-drama directed by Sam Mendes and written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida. The film’s two leads are John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph.

The film had a limited theater release in the United States starting June 25, 2009. It opened the 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on September 29, 2009.

Verona De Tessant and Burt Farlander are in their early thirties living in the Denver, Colorado area and struggling to meet daily needs and build fulfilling lives. When they learn they will soon become parents, they are confronted with the challenge of how – and where – to raise a child and build a happy family.

Six months into Verona’s pregnancy, the couple visit their only family in the area, Burt’s parents, Gloria and Jerry, only to find that Gloria and Jerry have decided to move to Antwerp, Belgium, a month before the baby is due. They also announce that they will be gone for two years and they have already rented the place out to another couple, despite Burt’s and Verona’s situation. Frustrated with Gloria and Jerry’s selfishness and careless attitude, Burt and Verona decide this is an opportunity to find somewhere else to raise their family, since they are both employed in situations where they can work from home and live wherever they choose.
