Promotion Watch ’19: Grant Thornton Admits 42 New Partners and Principals

The last month hasn’t been the greatest for Grant Thornton, as the firm gave pink slips to 230 professionals and 40 PPMDs, approximately 3.5% of its workforce, at the end of July. Carol Martin, 75

Carol Yates Martin, age 75, of Purlear, passed away Monday, March 9, 2020 at her home. Carol was born April 6, 1944 in Wilkes County to Theo Thad and Fannie McNeil Yates. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, where she played the organ. She also enjoyed playing the piano. She taught school in Seattle Washington, in Oregon, at Boomer Ferguson Elementary and for many years at Millers Creek Elementary. Carol loved her family. Mrs. Martin enjoyed her African grey parrot, Jaro; her cat, Roscoe; and dog, Laddie. Mrs. Martin was an avid reader and doing crosswords. She was loved by so many and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents.

Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Fred Martin, Jr. of the home; son, Christopher Lynn Martin and spouse Susan of Purlear; and granddaughter, Ava Grace Martin of Purlear.

 Robert "Bob" Reid, 84

Robert "Bob" Lee Reid, age 84, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held on 2:00 PM Thursday, March 12, at Pilgrim Baptist Church in Wilkesboro with Pastor Derek Kilby officiating. Burial with Military Honors and Masonic Rites will be in the church cemetery.   The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Wednesday evening at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro.

He was born November 14, 1935 in Iredell County to Pearl Beshears and William Marsh Beshears. He graduated from Central High School in Iredell County and then moved to Michigan in 1955 to work for General Motors.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1960.

He met and married the love of his life, Lynn Ann Jurek, in 1970.  He retired from Cadillac after a 35-year career.  Bob was an avid golfer, playing (and winning) in the Cadillac golf league for many years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Detroit and the Blue Ridge Shrine Club in Wilkesboro. He loved spending time with his family and friends and never met a stranger. Helping others gave him great joy. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in 2019, yet continued on with his same enthusiasm for life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters;Fern and Grace, and a brother, Denny.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn of the home, his son; Greg Reid (Andrea) of Boxford, MA, their daughter; Cheryl Easterwood (Rich), of Mesa, AZ, and their son; Robert Reid (Sherry), of Wilkesboro; two grandsons; Landon and Dylan Easterwood, of Mesa, AZ., one brother; Marshall Reid, one sister; Shelby Coppola (Eddy), an uncle; Ray Hartley (Betty) Beshears, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

The family requests no food or flowers.

Jimmy Brown, 57

Jimmy Ray Brown, age 57, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem. Jimmy was born October 24, 1962 in Wilkes County to James Vernon and Sarah Louise Knight Brown. He was of the Baptist Faith. He enjoyed taking care of stray animals and watching drag racing. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his father; and brother, Jeffery Brown.

     Surviving are his mother, Sarah Brown of North Wilkesboro; sisters, June Young and Debbie Perry both of North Wilkesboro; special uncle, James Thomas "Red" Knight of North Wilkesboro; uncles, Marvin Knight of North Wilkesboro, Johnnie Knight of Winston Salem, Tony Brown and Carvin Brown both of North Wilkesboro, Roland Brown of Arkansas; aunts, Jean Wyatt, Betty Walker and Linda Royal all of North Wilkesboro, Joyce Hill of South Carolina; best friends, Danny Hayes and Mark Shumate.

  Grady Smith, age 71

Grady Lee Smith, age 71, of Moravian Falls, passed away March 6, 2020 at his home. He was born February 24, 1949 in Wilkes County to Atwell Ray and Mary Annie Hester Smith. Mr. Smith was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church in Moravian Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Joseph Lee Smith; and brothers, Bill and Bob Smith.

Surviving are his wife, Talethia Houston Smith; daughters, Angela Vance and spouse James Michael of Cadet, Missouri, Revonda Adams and spouse Leland, Lisa Eller and spouse Jeremy all of Moravian Falls, Jolaine Wilson and spouse Greg of Statesville; sister, Hazel Foster and spouse John of Moravian Falls; ten grandchildren, Christopher Vance, Samantha Vance, Nicholas Watson, Zachary Watson, Tiffanie Adams, Duncan Eller, Brittany Rutherford, Hunter Eller, Jonathan Wilson, Katherine Wilson; and four great grandchildren, Kloe Watson, Tyler Watson, Emma Watson, Remington Rutherford.

Funeral service was March 10,  at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Ronnie Allen and Rev. Michael Dyess officiated.   Dorothy Stroud, 90

Mrs. Dorothy Elizabeth Smithey Stroud, age 90 of Wilkesboro, died Saturday, March 7, 2020 at her home.

Private family graveside services will be held.

Mrs. Stroud was born December 25, 1929 in Wilkes County to the late William and Rosie Gentle Smithey. She was a member of Oakwoods Baptist Church.  

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Royal Edward Stroud; one sister, Sybil Treadway; and three brothers, Jim Smithey, Pete Smithey, and Charlie Smithey.

She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Denny and husband, Jack, of Ronda; six sons, Robert Cardwell and wife, Brenda, of Wilkesboro, Wayne Cardwell and wife, Betty, of Wilkesboro, Tony Cardwell of Rutherfordton, Ricky Stroud and Sandra Johnson of Wilkesboro, George Stroud and wife, Ellen, of Wilkesboro, Ronnie Stroud of Blanch; twelve grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Jean Queen of Wilkesboro and Marian Cleary of China Grove; and two brothers, Wade Smithey and wife, Opal, of North Wilkesboro, and Calvin Smithey and wife, Vera, of Wilkesboro.

 Carrie West, 79

Mrs. Carrie Harris West, age 79, of Wilkesboro passed away Friday March 6, 2020 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services were March 10,   at 2pm at Davis Memorial Baptist Church with Pastor Hadley Triplett, Rev. David Winebarger, and Rev. Brandon Lowe officiating.  Burial   followed in the church cemetery.

Carrie was born September 25, 1940 in Wilkes to Emit and Olee Harris. Carrie retired from Kmart. She was an avid baker, seamstress, and reader. She loved to cook and bake for the family. Carrie was a lifetime member of Davis Memorial Baptist Church, where she served the Lord faithfully.

She was preceded in death by her parents and also her husband Arnell West. Carrie is survived by two daughters Debra Kilby (Bruce) of Hendersonville, NC and Wanda Love (Dwight) of Wilkesboro; four sons Terry West (Elaine) of Wilkesboro, Gary West (Kathy) of Laurel Springs, Brent West (Trish) of Wilkesboro, and Eric West (Loretta) of Millers Creek; Fifteen grandchildren; twenty two great-grandchildren; two sisters Shirley Griffin and Irene Minton both of Wilkesboro; and two brothers Lloyd Harris of Wilkesboro and Travis Harris of Ferguson.

   Diane Adams, 65    

Diane White Adams, age 65, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 18, 1954 in Yadkin County to Max and Beaulah Nichols White. Diane attended Sulphur Springs Baptist Church in Hiddenite. She enjoyed working in her yard. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, greagrandchildren and her dog "Spud." Diane was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, David White and Mark White.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry Adams of North Wilkesboro; daughter, Renee Peal and spouse Jeff of Taylorsville; son, Joseph Royall and spouse Daloma Jarratt of North Wilkesboro; step-mother, Sue White of Roxsboro; sister, Pamela Dimmette of North Wilkesboro; brother, Stevie White of Roxsboro; grandchildren, Savannah Wilson and spouse Ryan, Baylee Peal, Elijah Peal all of Taylorsville; and great grandchildren, Ivy Wilson and Grant Wilson both of Taylorsville.

Mrs. Zenith Inez Canter Walker, age 97 of North Wilkesboro passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at her home.

Funeral services were Sunday  at Reins- Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Paul Siceloff and Rev. Bryan Danner officiating.

Mrs. Walker was born June 6, 1922 in Wilkes County to Thomas J. and Zollie Yates Canter. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Baptist Church. Recently she enjoyed attending services at the Chapel in Wilkes Towers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gilbert Taylor Walker, a daughter, Mrs. Linda Walker Sturdivant, and a son, Jerry Taylor Walker; four sisters, Mary Linda Burton, Flora Lee Souther, Annie Chamberlain, Irene Dotson, and seven brothers, Jake Canter, Ralph Canter, Fred Canter, George Canter, Henry Canter, Burton Canter, Roby Canter, and two son in laws, J.D. Childress and Jack Vannoy.

Mrs. Walker is survived by two daughters, Ruth Walker Childress of North Wilkesboro, Doris Walker Vannoy of Wilmington, seven grandchildren, Andrea Childress Johnson, Joseph Childress, Lisa S. Nathan, LeAnne Sturdivant, Bill Sturdivant, Justin Vannoy, and Jason Vannoy. Eleven great grandchildren, Ty Johnson, Dylan Johnson, Jada Childress, Jenna Childress, Jaxson Childress, Leslie Sturdivant, Taylor Sturdivant, Lara Jarvis Klibansky, Ashley Jarvis, Kamalaya Vannoy, and Everly Vannoy, and seven great, great grandchildren Micah Johnson, Payson Johnson, Parker Mathis, Brayden Byrd, Elizabeth Gray, Ellie Klibansky, Roan Klibansky, and  a brother, Jack Canter of Irving, TX.

 Kenneth Triplett, 75

Kenneth Albert Triplett, age 75, of Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Accordius Health of Wilkesboro. Kenneth was born December 13, 1944 in Wilkes County to Wilmer Lovejoy "Bud" and Hallie Bowman Triplett. Kenneth loved playing softball and golf when he was able throughout his life and also enjoyed coaching softball. He was preceded in death by his parents; and great grandson, Luke Combs.

Surviving are his children, Denise Triplett of Hickory, Dawn Giplin and spouse Red of West Virginia, Kenneth Triplett and spouse Ashleigh of Lenoir, Anita Trapp and spouse Randy of North Wilkesboro; brothers, Loyd Triplett and spouse Fannie of Boomer, Gary Triplett of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Linda Price of Wilkesboro, Sara Lewis of North Wilkesboro; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

 Walter Lovette, 86

Mr. Walter "Sonny" Lovette, age 86 of Millers Creek passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at his son's home in Biloxi, MS.

Graveside services were March 9,   at Charity Community Church in Millers Creek with Pastor Steve Laws officiating.      

Mr. Lovette was born November 18, 1933 to Eugene and Blanche Blackburn Lovette.  He retired from poultry farming and then went into the rental property business.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother; Billy Eugene Lovette.

He is survived by his wife; Peggy Bumgarner Lovette, a son; Bobby Walter Lovette and wife Vickie, two daughters; Tammy Lovette Gragg and husband Kevin, Susan Caroline Lovette, four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.  

Rouie  Bentley, 93

Mrs. Rouie Mae Tedder Bentley, age 93 of Moravian Falls passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services were March 6,  at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Moravian Falls with  Rev. Sherrill Wellborn, Rev. Tom Moore, Rev. Darrel Poole and Preacher Chuck Combs officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.    

Mrs. Bentley was born August 21, 1926 in Wilkes County to Rellie Jefferson and Pearl Luvenia Treadway Tedder.  She was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist Church. She loved her family, they were the most important part of her life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Charlie Edward Bentley, one grandchild, two sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by one daughter; Linda Hawkins and husband Bill of Millers Creek, one son; Robert Bentley of Mulberry, three grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

  Charlie Willis, 64

Mr. Charlie Willis, 64, of Roaring River, passed away on Monday, March 2, 2020 at W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center.

Charlie was born on May 2, 1955 in Durham County to Joseph Willis and Emma Blackburn Willis.

Charlie is preceded in death by his parents.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Nellie Jean Spears Willis, daughters, Esther "Jane" Santos of Mt. Airy, Jessica Weatherman of North Wilkesboro, Misty Minton of Hays, Jennifer Love of Wilkesboro, Larenda Darby of Atlanta Georgia; sons, Justin Willis of Myrtle Beach, Jason Willis of Millers Creek; sisters, Laura Peeler of Gold Hill, Dena Morris of Richfield,Barbara Powers of Salisbury, Paula Almond of South Port, Sherry Hodge of Raleigh; brothers, Robert Willis of China Grove, Troy Willis of Missouri and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mr. Parks Gary Kilby, age 66 of Moravian Falls passed away Monday, March 2, 2020 at his home.

Mr. Kilby was born September 29, 1953 in Wilkes County to Parks Junior and Pauline Walsh Kilby.                      

He was preceded in death by his mother, his first wife; Carol Lynn Kilby, and a daughter; Pamela Carol Kilby and brother-in-law; Jim Lambert.

Jacob Isenhour, 59

Jacob Terry Isenhour, age 59, of Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2020 at his home. He was born June 12, 1960 in Wilkes County to Jake Junior and Carrie Naomi Calloway Isenhour. Mr. Isenhour enjoyed motorcycling and joking with people He was previously employed with Tyson Foods in maintenance. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Aaron Joseph Isenhour, James Horton; and sister, Barbara Jean Redman and Dawn Chamberlin.

He is survived by his wife, Elicenda Rodriguez Isenhour of the home; sons, Jacob T.  Dustin Walters, 32

Dustin Paul Walters, age 32, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, February 27, 2020. He was born January 5, 1988 in Wilkes County to Daniel Keith Walters, Sr. and Amy Vandervort Walters. Dustin was preceded in death by his parents; and grandmother, Judith Elaine Vandervort. Dustin loved fishing, listening to music, loved animals and nature whether hiking, camping or taking the dogs for a walk.

Nothing is going to stop the pain this senseless tragedy has caused. However, to know Dustin Paul Walters meant you were blessed and your life would never be the same. Ask almost anyone and the answer is Dustin was the most selfless, loving, loyal, honest, caring and beautiful soul anyone had met. No one can quite believe or understand "Why Him"? Dustin might not have seen the amazing legacy he was leaving behind but he definitely left a light to guide us through the dark. The family and friends he left behind in the world is definitely better off having had him in it, no matter how short it seemed.

Dustin judged no one, cared strongly, loved deeply and always gave it his all no matter who or what it was, even if he was, occasionally late. Dustin and his wife of almost 13 years were madly, deeply devoted to each other, and anyone who knew one knew the other. The other would feel the connection and knew they were lucky to have that so young. Dustin had lots of love to give and tried to share it as much as possible. Dustin and Megan used to tell each other that "They've had a heck of a Run." Hopefully this shocking and heart breaking loss will help you remember the bad, better, good and great times that we all had with this kind hearted, passionate and dedicated man who has pushed all of us to be a better person in some shape or form. Dustin fancied himself a "Junk" man from birth but that just meant he could see the value in anyone or anything.

Dustin and his family wish for you to cherish every second and always try. Dustin always managed to show love, respect and decency; even in times most wouldn't. Make sure to keep Dustin's legacy with you and alive honoring his life in your own special way. Instead of flowers the family and Dustin hopes you would do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness in his name.

Hi Internet!

It’s that time of year again. I’m pleased to report that even with moving, traveling, and starting school again, I still managed to read 53 books in 2017. Not as many as last year, but given the chaos my life has been through in the last 12 months I am not in the least upset. 50 books is a good goal for me, as it’s roughly one book a week–though in reality I read in jumps and spurts. Sometimes a book will take two weeks, whereas, in weeks like this one, I’ll read three books in one week.

For this year’s recap I am going to separate the books I read into categories by my ratings, as well as give a one-sentence (ish) review. Want more info? Message me or look up the book!

FIVE STAR

THE POWER, Naomi Alderman

   Women around the world spontaneously obtain the ability to generate and control electricity and the chaos that ensues left me shaken in the best way. (WORLD WAR Z meets THE HANDMAID’S TALE.)

GLAMOUR ADDICTION, Juliet McMains

A very readable academic analysis of the socioeconomic landscape of competitive Ballroom dance that had me excitedly annotating from page one.

HAMILTON: THE REVOLUTION, Lin-Manual Miranda & Jeremy McCarter

I mean do I really have to explain this–there’s a million things I haven’t done, but just you wait.

THE END OF THE DAY, Claire North

A slow-but-emotional travelogue of the adventures of the Harbinger of Death–not my favorite of North’s novels, but contains her characteristically beautiful prose.

THE COLLAPSING EMPIRE, John Scalzi

The first installment in a cinematic space opera series by sci-fi giant Scalzi, EMPIRE is tightly plotted, has fascinating characters, and the far-future world feels familiar without exactly copying others in the genre.

REJECTED PRINCESSES, Jason Porath

Tired of the Grimm and Disney versions? This collection of women from myth, legend, and history around the world explores less convenient and less kid-friendly tales of women who stuck to their guns and caused a ruckus.

SO YOU’VE BEEN PUBLICLY SHAMED, Jon Ronson

Though slightly dated in our modern light-speed internet world, this exploration of the power of social media is required reading for anyone participating in the Feed.

PANDEMIC, Sonia Shah

Yes, I’m a sucker for the world-wide-plague book, but this non-fiction depiction of how epidemics begin, spread, and shape the world we know today is excellent.

SPINNING MAMBO INTO SALSA, Juliet McMains

An ethnographic and historical comparison of the three US cities that spawned Salsa and Mambo, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in social dance and the phenomenon that is Salsa.

EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU, Celeste Ng

A deft and moving family drama about immigration, middle-class America, and the secrets we keep from those closest to us.

FOUR STAR

SAILING TO SARANTIUM & LORD OF EMPERORS, Guy Gavriel Kay

A lyrical and occasionally violent duology that walks the line between alt-history and fantasy based on the Byzantine empire.

THE REFRIGERATOR MONOLOGUES, Catherynne Valente

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES meets every superhero story ever–this short-story collection is piercing look at (loosely) veiled comic book tales and the women they have wronged.

THE NURSES, Alexandra Robbins

A non-fiction account of lives of those in the medical field who often seem to play second-fiddle to doctors. (Honestly I don’t remember much about this one, but I must have enjoyed it.)

STORIES OF YOUR LIFE, AND OTHERS, Ted Chiang

A mind-bending collection of science fiction short stories, including the one that inspired the 2016 movie ARRIVAL.

VAMPIRE GOD, Mary Hallub

The most comprehensive academic analysis of vampire media in the 19th through 21st centuries I have ever read.

IT DEVOURS!, Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor

This second book in the Night Vale world tackles science vs religion, and though they miss the mark a little, I will always love their prose and the universe they have built.

DANCE WRITINGS AND POETRY, Edwin Denby

This collection of original poetry and arts reviews contains gems from mid-20th-century dance critic Edwin Denby, including a fascinating interview regarding classicism with George Balanchine himself.

THE CITY AND THE CITY, China Mieville

  Is it science fiction? Is it artfully written detective fiction? I don’t think I’ve read a book so able to walk that line between fantasy and reality–as the characters walk the lines between their inexplicably separated cities.

BEAUTIFUL FLESH: A BODY OF ESSAYS, edited by Stephanie G’Schwind

 A collection of essays from a variety of authors, each focusing on a particular body part and their relationship to it. My personal favorite was a musing on the heart and humans’ relationship to electricity from an author with an implanted defibrillator.

WHAT IS LIFE? HOW CHEMISTRY BECOMES BIOLOGY, Addy Pross

A systems chemists attempt to re-frame how we think about life and its origins on our planet. This book is short but technically dense–good for the trained scientist, less so for the layperson.

THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, Jen Campbell

A quietly creepy collection of fairy tale and folk-lore-influenced short stories. My favorite was the first story, about a man who buys his girlfriend a new heart to ensure that she won’t leave him.

THE QUEEN OF BLOOD, Sarah Beth Durst

A bit of a guilty pleasure read, this fantasy series opener explores a world where the ruler of the realm must fight back malevolent natural forces.

AMBERLOUGH, Lara Donnelly

 CABARET the musical in novel form–this darkly beautiful story details the rise of facism in a fantasy world and how it impacts a colorful cast of miscreants.

THE ESSEX SERPENT, Sarah Perry

A beautiful and suspenseful tale of romance and loss in Victorian England, set again the backdrop of a hunt for a fantasy creature.

HILLBILLY ELEGY, J. D. Vance

  Both an autobiography and an attempt to explain the socioeconomic situation of Appalachian folks–but I’m conflicted on how much to buy into his arguments. Worth a read, though.

THE DIABOLIC, S. J. Kincaid

This story of a test-tube-grown bodyguard finding her humanity in a crumbling, corrupt space empire is the first YA sci-fi in a while that I didn’t hate!

BALLROOM DANCING IS NOT FOR SISSIES, Elizabeth & Arthur Seagull

Despite the sub-title, there is nothing R-rated about this how-to guide in balancing relationships and ballroom dancing.

DANCE WITH ME: BALLROOM DANCING AND THE PROMISE OF INSTANT INTIMACY, Julia Erickson

Despite the author’s obvious disdain for GLAMOUR ADDICTION (see Five Stars), this sociological analysis of studio ballroom culture lands on many of the same points as that other title, in addition to a hilariously accurate layout of the different performances of gender roles seen on the social dance floor.

THREE STAR

FOSSE, Sam Wasson

High on the drama and the page count, this biography of choreography legend Bob Fosse wastes no opportunity to dip into his sordid history and the seedy side of Broadway.

FUTURE HOME OF THE LIVING GOD, Lousie Erdrich

Despite its lovely prose, this novel doesn’t rise above the fact that it’s basically a less-good retelling of THE HANDMAID’S TALE.

MINDSET, Carol S. Dweck

My boss at my old job ‘suggested’ I read this. I remember nothing about it.

 THE MAD SCIENTIST’S GUIDE TO WORLD DOMINATION, Edited by John Joseph Adams

This collection of mad-science-themed short stories was sadly a mixed bag of quality–I loved one or two, barely finished others.

THE AERONAUT’S WINDLASS, Jim Butcher

A rollicking romp through a steampunk fantasy world, though I found the characters stock and the world forgettable. (The cat, though, is worth the price of admission alone.)

THE PALACE THIEF, Ethan Canin

Four not-particularly-memorable short stories concerning isolation and mid-century masculinity.

THREE DARK CROWNS, Kendare Blake

You’d think I’d have learned by now that YA fantasy does not float my boat, but, alas, I went into this tale of warring island factions and powerful queens-to-be expecting more than it delivered.

HOW TO BUILD A GIRL, Caitlin Moran

Sadly the details of this book have also faded, though I recall not understanding the nuances of British classism.

HEADS IN BEDS, Jacob Tomsky

A bit memoir, a bit how-to on cheating the hotel system of years gone by, a bit forgettable.

YOU’RE NEVER WEIRD ON THE INTERNET (ALMOST), Felicia Day

I’ve been a fan of Day since the Guild years, but this memoir suffers from the same problem as most of its internet-personality cohort–her story isn’t over, and the book feels unfinished.

JEROME ROBBINS: HIS LIFE, HIS THEATER, HIS DANCE, Deborah Jowitt

An interesting but dense biography of Broadway legend and second-fiddle-to-Balanchine Robbins. I was glad of the information, but am wary of glorifying a man who had a reputation as a tyrannical director.

DANCING OUT OF LINE: BALLROOMS, BALLETS, AND MOBILITY IN VICTORIAN FICTION AND CULTURE, Molly Engelhardt

Some interesting comparisons between Regency era and Victorian era social dance norms, but this book’s focus on dance depictions in time-period fiction did not hold my interest.

THE HOUSE OF GOD, Samuel Shem

A bizarre and polarizing account of the lives of medical residents in the 1970s that reads like a fever dream.

THEN WE CAME TO THE END, Joshua Ferris

I think this fictionalized account of office life was supposed to be equal parts pathos and satire, but I found it just vaguely sad and forgettable.

FROM BALLROOM TO DANCESPORT: AESTHETICS, ATHLETICS, AND BODY CULTURE, Caroline Picart

The author makes some interesting points about changes necessary to the DanceSport world in order for the sport’s inclusion in the Olympics, but the rest of the book is superseded by GLAMOUR ADDICTION (see Five Star).

AN EMBER IN THE ASHES, Sabaa Tahir

Again with the I-apparently-don’t-like-YA-Fantasy, and this one had the added bonus of being way too violent for my tastes.

THINKING WITH THE DANCING BRAIN, Sandra Minton

Neuroscience 101 for dancers–a nice refresher for me, but not much beyond that.

THE CROWN’S GAME, Evelyn Skye

Romance! Czarist Russia! Romance! Magic! Sadly I didn’t get into the relationship of the main characters.

TANGO AND THE POLITICAL ECONOMY OF PASSION, Marta E. Savigliano

This academic analysis of the history of tango and the socioeconomic forces at work during the dance’s creation had some interesting tid-bits, but I found it difficult to read and some stylistic choices hard to decipher.

TWO STAR

ZONE ONE, Colson Whitehead

I love zombie novels, but this one tries to be ‘litrary’ and cerebral and I just found it dull,  forgettable, and overly wordy.

THE ANUBIS GATES, Tim Powers

The cover of this absurdist time-traveling fantasy promises way more Ancient Egypt than I actually got. Crazy premise, idiotic characters, and only enough rollicking fun to laugh at.

YOU ARE A BADASS, Jen Sincero

For all its bluster and wanna-be subversiveness, BADASS is a pretty standard self-help book. Sadly I am one of the most self-motivated people I know, so the get-up-and-go was lost on me.

THE BLACK PRISM, Brent Weeks

The fascinating magic system was the only thing carrying me through this mess of unlikable characters and fantasy tropes.

BALLROOM! OBSESSION AND PASSION INSIDE THE WORLD OF COMPETITIVE DANCE, Sharon Savoy

Never have I disagreed so completely with advice given and conclusions drawn as I did from those of professional-ballet-dancer-turned-cabaret-division-star Savoy. Want a rant? Ask me more.

Se joutui maksamaan sairastuneille kymmenien miljoonien dollarien korvaukset.

Trafiguran vuokraama säiliöalus Probo Koala vei vuonna 2006 Abidjanin kaupunkiin tonneittain öljynjalostuksen sivutuotteena syntynyttä myrkkyä. Siellä paikallinen alihankkija levitti jätteen yöllä ainakin 18 paikalliselle kaatopaikalle Abidjanin ympäristöön. Yhdelläkään dumppauspaikoista ei ollut laitteita kemiallisen jätteen hävittämiseen. Paikoilta levisi hengityksen salpaava lemu.

Dumppaamisen takia lähes satatuhatta ihmistä sairastui. He kärsivät hengitysvaikeuksista, pahoinvoinnista ja ripulista. Sairaalahoitoa tarvitsi 69 ihmistä.

YK:n tilaaman raportin mukaanhttp://ift.tt/2ku1SAi Probo Koala oli yrittänyt päästä eroon lastistaan Amsterdamissa jo edellisenä kesänä. Siellä satamaviranomaiset olivat kuitenkin kiinnittäneet huomiota lastin voimakkaaseen hajuun. Mittauksissa osoittautui, että lastina oleva neste sisälsi paljon ilmoitettua suuremman määrän tioleja, pahanhajuisia kemiallisia yhdisteitä.

Satamaviranomaisten mukaan lasti olisi vaatinut kalliimman erityiskäsittelyn. Probo Koala päätti jatkaa matkaa purkamatta lastia. Elokuussa laiva saapui Norsunluurannikolle, missä paikallinen yritys tarjoutui hankkiutumaan jätteestä eroon halvempaan hintaan.

Ihmisoikeusjärjestö Amnesty Internationalin mukaanhttp://ift.tt/2bspTGI Trafigura, joka vuonna 2006 teki noin puolen miljardin dollarin voiton, sai noin 600 000 dollarin säästön viemällä jätteen Hollannin sijaan Norsunluurannikolle.

Abidjanin asukkaat haastoivat Trafiguran oikeuteen dumppaamisesta.

Vuonna 2007 yhtiö sopi Norsunluurannikon valtion kanssa kiistan noin 160 miljoonan dollarin hintaan. Vuonna 2009 yhtiö maksoi noin 50 miljoonaa dollaria myrkytyksen uhreille.

Saman tapauksen seurauksena yhtiö tuomittiin sakkoihin myrkkyjätteen laittomasta viennistä, kertoo BBChttp://ift.tt/2ectYS4. Hollantilainen tuomioistuin määräsi yhtiön maksamaan noin miljoonan euron sakot. Yhtiö kiisti syytökset.

YK:n raportin mukaan dumppaus rinnastuu ihmisoikeusrikkomukseen.

Trafiguran toimitusjohtaja Jeremy Weirhttp://ift.tt/2kuapD9 pitää menneisyyden tapahtumia hyvin valitettavina. Hänen mukaansa ympäristöasiat ovat yhtiölle keskeisen tärkeitä.

Elinkeinoministeri Lintilä sanoo, että Trafiguran rikkeet ovat olleet tiedossa.

”Totta kai nämä ovat äärettömän vakavia ja moitittavia rikkeitä.”

Lintilä huomauttaa, että Trafigura tulee mukaan ainoastaan sijoittajana, ei operoimaan kaivosta.

”Kaivostoiminnasta vastaa yhä Terrafame.”

Probo Koala -vyyhtiin kuuluu myös tapaus, jossa Trafigura yritti poikkeuksellisella tavalla vaientaa lehdistön.

Brittiläinen The Guardian -sanomalehti sai syksyllä 2009 käsiinsä Trafiguran tilaaman raportin dumppaustapauksesta. Niin kutsutun Minton-raportin johtopäätökset olivat yhtiön kannalta niin huolestuttavia, että raportti salattiin.

Kun The Guardian kuuli raportin olemassaolosta ja kysyi siitä raportin tekijöiltä, Trafigura haastoi lehden oikeuteen. Se hankki lehdelle kiellon kertoa raportista. Poikkeuksellisesti myös kielto itsessään julistettiin salaiseksi.

Viisi viikkoa kestänyt taistelu lehden ja yhtiön välillä kääntyi lehden voitoksi, kun eräs parlamentin jäsen päätti tehdä raportista parlamentaarisen kysymyksen. Trafiguran asianajajien mukaan The Guardian ei olisi saanut raportoida edes tästä kysymyksestä.

Loretta Estes, 75

Mrs. Loretta Huffman Estes, age 75 of Wilkesboro passed away Sunday, October 14th, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem.

Funeral services were held  October 16th,   at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Reach Center with Pastor Dale Jennings officiating.   Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Estes was born July 19, 1943 in Wilkes County to Everette Monroe and Selma Eller Huffman. She was a retired school teacher and member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James (Randy) Augustus Estes, four sisters; Ruth Brown, Maxine Church, Charlotte Greene and Kate Huffman and four brothers; Wayne Huffman, Ray Huffman, N.C. Huffman and Loyd Huffman.

She is survived by a daughter; Tonya Moore and husband Rocky of Millers Creek, a son; Randall Estes and wife Julie of Wilkesboro, a grandson; Caleb Moore and two sisters; Patricia Minton of Wilkesboro and Betty Church and husband Edwin of Ferguson.

 Larry Parsons,  47

Mr. Larry Dwayne Parsons, age 47 of Boomer, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018 at his home.

Memorial services were held   October 18th,   at Little Rock Baptist Church with Rev. Hal Greene officiating.  

Mr. Parsons was born June 22, 1971 in Caldwell County to Dwight Samuel Parsons and Alice Rosettie Wolfe Parsons. He was Self Employed in the Sawmill business and a member of Little Rock Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents of the home and two brothers; Lonnie Parsons and wife Beth of Moravian Falls and Scott Parsons and wife Ashley of North Wilkesboro.

  Juanita Little,  85

Juanita Mash Little, age 85, of Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born July 28, 1933 in Wilkes County to Robert and Stella Rose Mash. Juanita was previously a long time member of Piney Ridge Baptist Church. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and painting. Juanita loved her children, grandchildren, and The Lord. Mrs. Little was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill Mash, Lloyd Mash, Charles Mash; sisters, Frances Church and Pauline Sheets; and grandson, Chad Little.

Mrs. Kay Frances Elmore Johnson, age 79 of Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2018 at Curis Healthcare in Wilkesboro.

Memorial services were held  October 15, 2018  with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and Brother Worth Johnson officiating.

Mrs. Johnson was born January 12, 1939 in Wilkes County to George Washington and Alma Mary Dunn Elmore. She was retired from Belk.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Jim Elmore, Ronnie Elmore, Ken Elmore and a granddaughter; Kayla Johnson.

She is survived by a daughter; Susan Johnson of Wilkesboro, a son; Ralph Johnson, Jr. of Wilkesboro, the children's Dad; Ralph Lee Johnson, Sr. of Wilkesboro, two grandchildren; Samantha Johnson Billings and husband Jeremy and Douglas Johnson and wife Pamela, two great grandchildren; Madison Billings and Eli Billings and a sister; Carolyn Sparks of Ferguson.

  Sandra  Nichols, 67

Sandra "Sandy" Laxton Nichols, age 67, of Boomer, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 14, 1951 in Wilkes County to John Barker and Dare Howell Laxton. Mrs. Nichols was retired as an English Teacher from Wilkes Central High School. She was a member, choir director and pianist at Union United Methodist Church. Sandy was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Thomas Rex Nichols.

Surviving are her husband, Rex Nichols; son, Allen Laxton Nichols and wife Jane Kilby Nichols of Boomer; daughter, Ann Elizabeth Nichols of Wilkesboro; and grandchildren, Maddy Nichols, Alex Nichols, Katie Nichols.

  Jimmie  Hall Sr., 83

Jimmie Dean Hall Sr., age 83, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Medical Center. He was born May 28, 1935 in Wilkes County to Jorry Willie Hall and Orchella Handy Hall.

Mr. Hall was a retired 20 year veteran of the Air Force. He served his country with great pride and honor. He was stationed all over the world before his last station at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He worked as a printer for what now is Wells Fargo Bank and moved on as a Printer for Nu-Line Printing and other businesses. His last job before full retirement was a printer from "The Record" better known to most locals as Thursday Magazine. He was a member of the Wilkes Civitans, Commissioner of Babe Ruth Baseball at Cub Creek Park in Wilkesboro for many years, and coached and managed baseball teams. Mr. Hall spent a part of his past time making candles and sold them all over the country as Founder and Owner of the Blue Ridge Country Scented Candles. He loved his NASACR and playing cards with old friends, but more importantly he was a wonderful family man, a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His passion and dedication to his family and community made him a very special person and a great man.

Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Glenn Howard Hall and Walter Wayne Hall; four sisters, Betty Sue Hall, Imogene Handy, Thelma Wyatt and Bernice Owens.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Lucy Sloop Hall; son, Jimmie Dean Hall, Jr. and wife Misty Hendren Hall of Clemmons; daughters, Teresa Combs, Jackie Rhodes and husband James all of North Wilkesboro; seven grandchildren, Angela Scott and husband Glenn, Jessica Combs, Sydney Barton and husband Matt, Gavin Hall, Jennifer Rhodes, Samantha Rhodes and Samuel Rhodes. Five great grandchildren, Cole Smith, Eva Scott, Brady Scott, Tate Roten, Jace Roten; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was  October 14,   at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Chad Hendren officiating.  Burial with full military honors   followed in Scenic Memorial Gardens.

  Danny Brooks,  55

Danny Brooks, age 55, of Hays, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Woltz Hospice Home. He was born December 6, 1962 in Wilkes County to James Monroe and Pansy Alice Caudill Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a member of Double Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Wanda Whitley.

Surviving are his wife, Brenda Cleary Brooks; son, James "Daniel" Brooks, Jr. and wife P.J. of Boonville; granddaughter, Olivia Stevens of Boonville; brother, Ronnie Cleary and wife Wanda of Hays; and sisters, Ann Caudill and husband Alvin, Debbie Anderson all of Hays.

Bettie Pauline Parsons Billings, age 73, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Rose Glen Manor. She was born March 10, 1945 in Wilkes County to Robert and Venie Stanley Parsons. Mrs. Billings attended Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claude Billings; half-brother, Junior Webb; and half-sister, Diane Parsons.

Surviving are her daughter, Karen Todd and husband Michael of Moravian Falls; sisters, Willa Dean Stanley, Lori Bauguess, Sandra Webb all of North Wilkesboro; brothers, Stevie Parsons, Rex Parsons both of North Wilkesboro; grandchildren, Katelyn and Michaela Todd; step-father, Marvin Webb of North Wilkesboro; several nieces and nephews.

  Virginia Adams, 81

Virginia Brown Adams, age 81, of Hays, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at her home. She was born March 2, 1937 in Wilkes County to Jacob and Mary Barnette Brown. Mrs. Adams was a member of Mtn. Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Arlie Brown.

   Cleon Blackburn, 58

Cleon Sanford Blackburn, age 58, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Wilkes Regional. He was born November 30, 1959 in Wilkes County to Eli Percy and Myrtle Reavis Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn was retired as an electrician. He loved NASCAR racing; Carolina Panthers; his 70's Boss Mustang; watching Gunsmoke, Price is Right. He also loved spending time with his little bug Rae Rae. Mr. Blackburn was preceded in death by his parents; son, Shannon Jennings; brother, Jerry Blackburn; and sister, Doris Shew.

  Roxine De Maio, 83

Edna Roxine Early De Maio of Moravian Falls, NC, passed away at her home October 8 due to complications from ALS. She was 83.

Roxine was born October 31, 1934 in Haywood County, NC, to the late Roscoe and Bessie Sutton Early. After her father passed away, she was blessed to become the stepdaughter of Calvin D. Rich.  Roxine was an avid outdoors woman, a crack shot who could hunt, drop and gut her own deer to the envy of all. She was perhaps happiest when fishing in the back country of Canada, looking like a slightly sunburned Hollywood celebrity, and consistently reeling in the best catch of the day.

After marrying the love of her life, Joseph R. De Maio, she perfected the skill of cooking various Italian dishes "just like his Mom used to make." Roxine was also a creative quilter with a particular gift for restoring old quilt tops and experimenting with colors, especially dark ones, which she found most interesting and soothing. Quilting while watching programs like her beloved "Song of the Mountains" or "Antiques Roadshow" and "American Pickers" was a favorite pastime when her health allowed. Through the years, Roxine excelled in several careers including administrative assistant, hair stylist, antique shop owner and quality control nurse, having returned to school later in life and graduating at the top of her class.

Roxine was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather. She is survived by her husband, Joseph R. De Maio of the home; a daughter, Lisa Brewer (Greg) of North Wilkesboro, NC; a son, Dr. Joe De Maio (Sylvia) of Atlanta, GA, and two grandsons, Joseph Zachary Brewer and David Bryan Brewer of North Wilkesboro, NC. The family wishes to thank the many excellent care givers who attended Roxine through the years, especially Sandy Hutchens.

Rubin Reginald Carver, age 69, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, October 5, 2018 at Curis of Wilkesboro. He was born February 11, 1949 in New York, New York to Rubin H. and Betsy Waugh Carver. Mr. Carver was a US Marine Veteran, serving in Vietnam. He was preceded in death by his father, Rubin H. Carver; his wife, Vera Washington Carver; and brothers, Henry, Louis "Bubba" and Michael Carver.

  Dr. Duane Howard Smith, age 85

Dr. Duane Howard Smith, age 85 of Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, October 4th 2018, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12:00 Noon, November 18th, 2018 at the John A. Walker Center on the campus of Wilkes Community  College in Wilkesboro.  

Dr. Smith was born July 18, 1933 in Ohio to Howard E. Smith and Mary Caroline Catherine Schulte Smith.  He moved to Wilkes in 1974 along with his wife, the former Darlene Russell (Rusty) Carter, who had family members in Wilkes. Mrs. Smith worked by his side as a nurse, physician assistant, surgical assistant and sonographer for his entire career. The Smiths were married for 61 years, prior to her death in November 2017. Dr. Smith built Foothills Center in 1980, and rebuilt it at the same location after it burned in 1996.  While he never kept count, throughout his practice, he delivered at least 20,000 babies calculated on an average of 25 a month, which he admitted was a conservative estimate. In 2014, Dr. Smith stopped delivering babies after 51 years. During his 40 years in Wilkes, he cared for three generations of families. During an interview in 2014, he was quoted as saying that he has continued to work "because I love it, and I love my patients…..and I don't know how to do anything else." He continued to practice as a gynecologist and surgeon at Foothills Center for Women, working about five hours a day until he retired. One of Dr. Smith's daughters, Pam Sloop a family nurse practitioner took over as the primary care provider for the practice. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served his country in the Vietnam War. Dr. Smith was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, and a sister; Marian Smith Winner.

He is survived by two daughters; Pamela Sue Smith Sloop and husband, Davy R. Sloop of Wilkesboro, Lynda Carol Smith Chasar of North Wilkesboro, two sons; Stephen Smith and wife Kahkashan of Greensboro and Scott Smith and wife Lucinda of Boone, eleven grandchildren; Emily Anne Sloop, Evan D. Sloop, Erin Sloop Kearney, Jacob Raymond Stalder, Mara Frances Rose Chasar, Beatrice Smith, Eliot Smith, Carter Smith, Megan Diane Smith, Samia Shahnawaz and Salwa Shahnawaz and two great grandchildren; Liam P. Kearney and Maslynn Stalder.

           Miss Lucille Sylvia Gryder, age 80 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Sunday, September 02, 2018 at Westwood Hills Nursing and Rehab.

           Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM, Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Charles Ratliff officiating. Burial will be in Scenic Memorial Gardens.            Miss Gryder was born March 2, 1938 in Wilkes County to Claude Doughton Gryder and Ruby Elizabeth Anderson Gryder. She retired from Yadkin Valley Bag Company and was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church.

           She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister; Claudia Ann Triplett and a nephew; Jerry Lane Triplett, Jr.

Talmadge Wyatt,  77 Talmadge Wyatt, age 77, of Purlear passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018 at his home. Mr. Wyatt was born September 6, 1940 in Wilkes County to Alfred and Anna Belle Brown Wyatt. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kathleen Church Wyatt and grandson, Jacob Phipps.

           Mr. Wyatt retired after 30 years from Wilkes County EMS. He faithfully attended Boiling Springs Baptist Church, he loved God and his family. He was very dedicated to his church family. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, family get togethers and eating breakfast with the boys retired from Wilkes County EMS. He also enjoyed playing bingo, rook and card games. He loved his dog, Stuart Little.

           Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Joey Moore and Pastor Donnie Shumate officiating. Burial will follow in the Yadkin Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.       Mr. Wyatt is survived by his daughter, Diane Phipps, and husband, Jeff of Purlear.  Nila  Wassum,  90

Nila Lorraine Kilby Wassum, age 90 of Wilkesboro, passed away Saturday, September 1st,  2018 at her home surrounded by family.

           Nila was born June 3rd, 1928 in Lancaster  County, PA to Carl Norman Kilby and Ruth Louthian Kilby. Prior to moving to North Carolina in 1971, she and her family lived in Marion, Virginia where she met the love of her life, J.T. She worked for Brunswick Corporation and was a bookkeeper for various furniture stores and a doctor's office.

           Upon moving to North Carolina, she worked in accounting for Northwestern Bank.

           Nila enjoyed being involved in the community.  She was an active member of Baptist Home Baptist Church for many years. She served the Lord and community through her involvement with the church library, Hospice of Wilkes, Pink Ladies for Wilkes Regional Hospital, the Mulberry Home Extension Club, and caring for neighbors, friends, and family.  Her hobbies and interests were gardening, sewing, camping, crafting, and later in life playing games with friends at Rose Glen Village in Wilkesboro where she resided the last five years. Nothing made her happier than having her family gathered around a table full of home cooked food.

           In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas (J.T.) Wassum, Jr. and a brother, Lake Kilby.

           She is survived by two daughters, Belinda Smithey and husband, Chuck of Wilkesboro and Beverly Holton and husband, Robert of Boone, four grandchildren:  Lori Holton, Kelly Holton Edwards and husband, Jeremy, Hannah Smithey Peacock and husband, Chris, and Zach Smithey and wife, Carrie. She is also survived by four great grandchildren:   Kilby Edwards, Piper Peacock, Price Peacock, and Elizabeth Smithey,  and her sister, June Smith of Lexington, along with many nieces and nephews.

           A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, September 5th, 2018 at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Dr. Chris Hefner officiating. A private burial will be held prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM Tuesday at Reins Sturdivant Funeral Home.

  Roger  Webb, 68

Roger Dale Webb, age 68, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Friday, August 31, 2018 at Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born January 3, 1950 in Wilkes County to Robert and Mattie Mabe Webb. Mr. Webb was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church; loved music and played in many country-western and gospel bands. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ann Byrd Webb; three brothers; and a sister.

           Surviving are his brothers, Ricky Webb and wife Joyce of Millers Creek, Marvin Webb, Gene Webb and wife Mary all of North Wilkesboro; sisters, Myrtle Webb of North Wilkesboro, Lucy Ayers and husband Junior of Sparta, Peggy Miller and husband Clate of Cricket; step son, Jerry Blevins and wife LeAnn; and step grandson, Logan Blevins.

  Roger Cox,  69

Mr. Roger Cox, age 69 of North Wilkesboro crossed the finish line on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Wilkes Senior Village.  Roger stood up his tall strong 6' 4½" frame and put up a valiant fight against 3 types of cancer over the past 8 years and was the epitome of a survivor.

           Funeral services were held  August 31,  at First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro with Dr. Bert Young officiating.  Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.   .

           Mr. Cox was born April 1, 1949 in Wilkes County to Walter Joel and Ethel Rae Smoot Cox.  He was very proud to be from a large family and was the "baby" of 13 children and enjoyed attending family reunions.  He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of North Wilkesboro.  He was the owner/operator of Roger Cox Heating & Air Conditioning Service and was a much sought after expert in the field.  Roger loved to work hard, eat good food, make his home beautiful, golf, and listen to good music.  Roger had a great smile and could shoot the breeze with anyone!  Amy was the love of his life and the two were quite simply inseparable.  He took great joy in being Deidra & Carey's father and was the best Papa to his 4 grands, making himself available for on-demand back rubs at any time.  

           In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters; Bernice Arnold, Rosa Lee Barker, Anna Lee Spivey, Mildred Johns, Etheleen Cox, Helen Combs and four  brothers; J.B. Cox, Walter Ed Cox, Carl Ira Cox, Charlie Cox.

           He is survived by his wife; Amy Foster Cox of the home, two daughters; Deidra Dickens and husband Eddie of Charlotte, Carey Barefoot and husband Brian of Huntersville, four grandchildren; Owen Barefoot, Brady Barefoot, Lyric Dickens, Melody Dickens, one sister; Kathleen Smith of Poplar Springs and one brother; Sam Cox and wife Doris Fay of Elkin.

Thomas  Hunter,  87

Mr. Thomas Francis Hunter, "Tommy", age 87 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Monday, August 27, 2018 at his home.

           Funeral services were held  August 30,  at Edgewood Baptist Church with Rev. Eddie Tharpe, Rev. James Carl Church, III and Rev. Julius Blevins officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 was in Mountlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 1:30 prior to the service at the church.

           Mr. Hunter was born April 25, 1931 in Forsyth County to Roger Francis Hunter and Alpha Faitha Davis Hunter. He was retired from Pilot Freight Carriers having worked for over 35 years and earning the Safe Driver award yearly. Mr. Hunter was a veteran of the United States Army serving as Sergeant First Class in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Heroic service in 1953. He was a lifelong member of Edgewood Baptist Church where he sang in the choir for many years.

           In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; Dorothy Jean Church Hunter, two sisters and two brothers.

           Mr. Hunter is survived by four daughters; Debra Hanke and husband Erich of Ahoskie NC, Lynn Anderson of Wilkesboro, Becky Minton and husband Ken of North Wilkesboro and Laura Dezarn and husband Todd of Lewisville and three grandchildren; Matthew McNeil, Elizabeth Minton and Lindsey Minton.

Hallie Bell, 81

Hallie Lorrain Bell, age 81, of North Wilkesboro, died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the home of her son. She was born February 23, 1936 in  Wilkes County to Fieldon and Flossie Jordan Roten. Mrs. Bell was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, J.C. Bell; grandson, Andrew Goforth; sisters, Louella Staley, Helen Snyder, Bobbie Roten, Billie Jean Miller; brothers, Herman Howard, Homer Roten; and step daughter, Loretta Dancy.

           Surviving are her sons, Thomas Miller and wife Alice of Millers Creek, Rex Miller and wife Shirlene of Millers Creek; daughter, Rita Goforth and husband Kenneth of North Wilkesboro; brother, Robert Dale Roten and wife Robin of Glendale Springs; sister, Faye Roten of Glendale Springs; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

Judy Johnson, 70

Judy Lynn Johnson, age 70, of Lenoir, died Friday, September 29, 2017 at Gateway Rehab and Healthcare Center in Lenoir. She was born August 28, 1947 in Wilkes County to Elbert and Mary Anderson Craig. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Larry Craig.

          Surviving are her husband, H.R. "Jack" Johnson; sister, Patricia Morrow of North Wilkesboro; step daughter, Amy Wells of Boonville; and step son, Eddie Johnson of Millers Creek.

          Graveside service was October 1, at Lewis Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Bruce Rhoades officiating. The family has requested no flowers. Ricky Eller,  57

Ricky "Rick" Eller, age 57, of Moravian Falls, died Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Woltz Hospice Home. He was born December 16, 1959 in Wilkes County to Cline and Rose Hamby  Eller. Mr. Eller attended Oakwoods Baptist Church and employed with Wilkes County as a 911 dispatcher. He was preceded in death by his mother.

           He loved salt water and deep sea fishing and was an avid fan of the Carolina Panthers and the Carolina Tarheels. Rick loved life and God. He fought the battle to live surviving longer than the doctor's predicted. His faith in God helped him to remain positive and keep his determination to fight the good fight. Rick had a beautiful and blessed life. Along with fishing he loved playing wheelchair basketball and tennis, with tennis being his favorite. He played in many tennis competitions throughout the state. His handicap was no issue for him. Rick did whatever he wanted and took life day by day, enjoying and making it the best day possible. He will never be forgotten. Rick was a wonderful husband and a father. He was preceded in death by his mother.

           Surviving are his wife, Diane Adams Eller; son, Jeremy Eller of the home; his father, Cline Eller of Wilkesboro; and brother, Clay Eller of Wilkesboro.

Mr. Stephen Lee Foster, age 66 of North Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, September 28 2017.

           Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Lewis Fork Baptist Church with Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 AM prior to the Church. Burial will be in the church Cemetery.

           Mr. Foster was born December 22, 1950 in Wilkes County to John Garvin and Christine Evelyn Ferguson Foster.  

           In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter; Lisa Marie Wyatt.

           He is survived by one daughter; Pamela Foster Smoot and husband Jason of State Road, four sons; Billy Foster and wife Renee of Wilkesboro, Scott Foster of North Wilkesboro, Ray Tart of North Wilkesboro and Dale Tart of Millers Creek, thirteen grandchildren; Haley Finney, Brannon Smoot, Kinsey Foster, Mariah Taylor, Aiden Taylor, Tyler Foster, Lexie Foster, Shyann Smoot, Capp Smoot, Autumn Tart, Aubrey Tart, Addie Tart and Hannah Tart, and one sister; Brenda Johnson and husband Rayburn of Wilkesboro and step-son; Mark Finney.

 Ted Wyatt, 66

Mr. Ted Jerry Wyatt, age 66 of McGrady, passed away Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.

           Funeral services were held  September 30,  at Reins Sturdivant Chapel. Burial was in the Bethel Community Church Cemetery.                               Mr. Wyatt was born April 23, 1951 in Wilkes County to William Thomas and Elizabeth Fern Reeves Wyatt. He was employed by Tomlinson's Oil Company and was a member of Bethel Community Church.

           He was preceded in death by his mother, his wife; Linda Tipton Wyatt, a son; Jerry Kenneth Wyatt and two brothers; Tommy Wyatt and Bobby Wyatt.

           Mr. Wyatt is survived by his father; William Thomas Wyatt of North Wilkesboro, three daughters; Melissa Minton and husband, Clay of Wilkesboro, Kimberly Pennington and husband, Tommy of Traphill and Mandy Cleary and husband, Calvin of Millers Creek, nine grandchildren; Justin Call, Cody Call, Christopher Wyatt, Aubree Wyatt, Laken Cleary, Kaley Cleary, Laura Pennington, T.J.  Brenda  Brewer, 67

Brenda Kay Harless Brewer, age 67, of Millers Creek, died Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Wilkes Senior Village. She was born March 16, 1950 in Wilkes County to Thomas Arnold and Virginia Ruth Gentle Harless. Ms. Brewer was a member of Victory Baptist Church. She was a manager at the Ithaca Employee Store and cafeteria worker at Mtn. View Elementary School. Ms. Brewer enjoyed watching and feeding birds. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a great niece, McKinley Harless.

           Surviving are her brother, Rick Harless and wife Ragenia of Millers Creek; sister, Nona Lawrence and husband Thomas of Vilas; and nephew, T.R. Harless and wife Kandise of Millers Creek.

           Memorial service was h October 3,    at Victory Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Pruitt officiating. Burial will follow in Piney Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.  Flowers will be accepted.  Richard Holbrook, Sr. 80

Mr. Richard Max Holbrook, Sr. age 80 of North Wilkesboro, husband of Elnora Harris Holbrook, passed away Sunday, September 24th, 2017 at his home.

           Funeral services were October 1st,   at Reins Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Glenn Millsaps and Rev. Richard Watts officiating.  

           Burial with Military Honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1142 Honor Guard, will be in the Chapel Hill AME Zion Church Cemetery.

           Mr. Holbook was born December 21st. 1936 in Wilkes County to Mack and Anna Cropp Holbrook. He was retired from Abitibi Price (ABTCO) where he worked as Assistant Manager Press Operator. Mr. Holbrook was a member of Chapel Hill AME Zion Church.

           In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son; Arthur Bernard Holbrook, sister; Margaret Holbrook Waugh and a brother; Rick Allen Holbrook.

           He is survived by his wife; Elnora Harris Holbrook of the home, a son; Richard Mack Holbrook, Jr and wife, Anita of Durham, nine grandchildren,  a sister; Yvonnie Holbrook Thomas and husband, Dennis of North Wilkesboro and a brother; Ronald Holbrook of North Wilkesboro.

  Dewey Pruitt, 68

Dewey Christopher Pruitt, age 68, of Boone, died Friday, September 22, 2017 at Autumn Care of Drexel. He was born September 30, 1948 in Wilkes County to Wilmer Matthew and Mary Louise Owens Pruitt. Mr. Pruitt was a US Marine Veteran serving in Vietnam and was a recipient of two Purple Hearts. He was a member of the American Legion and was associated with the DAV for over two decades. He served as district commander of the NC DAV ninth district and District Commander of the Year in 2005. As a service officer, he helped many veterans learn about and obtain their well-deserved benefits. He drove many veterans to the VA hospitals, sometimes in his own vehicle, before helping obtain a van. He helped raise money constantly for things they needed - a van, food, medication, etc.

           Pruitt placed an emphasis on "young veterans," and encouraged them to get involved in veterans' organizations. He also stressed the importance of recognition for women veterans and active duty members "because they're out there risking their lives just like the men are. He was also actively involved with The American Legion, VFW, and Marine Corp League and held offices in most of the organizations. He was quoted in a newspaper article as saying it was all  " a way to give back,"  to help fellow veterans accomplish all they can and to see that they receive the benefits and acknowledgments that they deserve. Prior to being named District Commander, over nine chapters from Avery to Lincoln counties, Pruitt successfully led Chapter 90 of Boone for two years. As District Commander, Pruitt attended chapter meetings and state conferences and conventions on a regular basis and served as a liaison, "a voice for the veterans," between each chapter and the state and federal levels. He assisted with membership drives, installed new officers, helped veterans obtain benefits, and worked to resolve any disputes that arose. There were approximately 2500 Disabled American Veterans who depended on Pruitt's resourcefulness as their District Commander. Pruitt said he was proud to be a disabled American veteran. "When that flag flies in the air, it's not just a piece of cloth flying in the air,"  he said. "To me that's Old Glory. When that flag flies in the air, that's a symbol to me that this land is still free. Until the day I die, I will honor that flag. I will honor the American Legion. I will honor the DAV." But most of all, he loved the Lord.

           He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Benjamin Pruitt and Richard Pruitt.

           Surviving are his wife, Della Pruitt; son, Ladner Matthew Pruitt, and wife Vickie, of North Wilkesboro; step children, Ronnie Jones, and wife Donna, of Boone; Mike Jones, and wife Cheryl, of Todd; Tim Jones, and wife Sandra, of Boone; Ricky Jones, and wife Anita, of Todd; Ala Sue Mortez, and husband Danny, Sr., of Boone; Sandi Tavel, and husband Larry, of Indiana; two grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; and twelve step- great-grandchildren.

           Funeral service was held  September 25, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gary Watson and Rev. Kerry Nichols officiating. Burial with military honors by DAV Chapter #90 of Boone and the Brushy Mtn.  Marsha Wagoner, 57

Marsha "Dianne" Wagoner, age 57, North Wilkesboro, died Monday, September 25, 2017 at her home. She was born July 27, 1960 in Iredell County to Husten Ederlee and Margaret Louise Neal Cleary. She was a member of Dehart Baptist Church. Mrs. Wagoner was preceded in death by her parents.

           Surviving are her husband Rickey Thomas Wagoner, Sr.; sons, Shane Cleary and wife Amanda of North Wilkesboro, Rickey Wagoner, Jr. and wife Beth of Hays, Richard Anthony Wagoner and wife Beth of North Wilkesboro, Ryan Nathan Wagoner and wife Jessica of Hays; daughter, Jessica Dianne Osborne and husband Arlie Graydeon Floyd of North Wilkesboro; brothers, Ricky Cleary, Steven Cleary, Larry Cleary, Neal Cleary all of North Wilkesboro; twelve grandchildren.

  Marty Harris, 50

Marty Donald Harris, age 50, of Ronda, died Sunday, September 17, 2017 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was born January 12, 1967 in Surry County to Carl Donald and Shirley Mae Stewart Harris. Mr. Harris was a member of Ronda Baptist Tabernacle. He was preceded in death by his father; and brothers, Wayne Shumate and Kenny Harris.

           Surviving are his wife, Kimberly Miller Harris; son, Chad Harris and wife Brandy of Ronda; his mother, Shirley Mae Stewart Harris of Ronda; brothers, Randy Harris and wife Debbie, David Shumate all of Ronda; and two grandchildren, Caden Harris of Courtney, Koleton Steelman of Ronda.

Mrs. Ruth Nancy Swartz Ramsey, age 71 of North Wilkesboro, passed away Thursday, September 14, 2017 at her home.

           Mrs. Ramsey was born July 16, 1946 in Pennsylvania to George Hugh Swartz, Sr. and wife, Nancy Pearl Furches Swartz.

           She was preceded in death by her parents.

           Mrs. Ramsey is survived by her husband; Daniel Woodrow Ramsey, Sr. of MD, a daughter; Savonia Lupfer of PA, a son; Justin Ramsey of MD, one grandchild, a sister; Janet Roddy of PA and a brother; George Swartz of North Wilkesboro.
