I would hate to see him fail. But I would hate far more to lose this boy. I would almost rather freeze time here, and freeze myself with it, than face that.

Rogue Planet by Greg Bear
Anakin came awake and blinked owlishly in the warm cabin lights. “You were dreaming,” Obi-Wan said. “Not me. The ship,” Anakin said. “Or maybe we were dreaming together. We were traveling around the galaxy, seeing wonderful things. It was so great to just be free. You were there with us. I think you were having fun, too.” Anakin held out his hand, fingers spread, and Obi-Wan met it with his own hand. A few more years and the boy would reach his full growth. In more than just size.

halo 4 // halo: epitaph
“Civilizations will rise in our stead, and our job as caretakers will at last bear fruit. Until then, I leave you here, my love. The only living thing in this galaxy, sealed safely away. Spend these ages ahead of you in meditation on your choices. When you wake, you will find the humans. I have ensured that they will grow strong and vibrant . . . They will be our rightful heirs. Their gene plan dictates that the galaxy will be theirs to care for by then. I beg of you . . .” She had left him a galactic cartographer, a key that showed the way to vast reserves of Forerunner technology so that he might use it to assist and guide humanity as they claimed the Mantle of Responsibility. “Find the strength to help them learn from our mistakes. And my husband? Let them teach you something. Please.” When he first heard them, he’d found those parting words intensely condescending. Found her hope that he’d be humanity’s teacher and champion utterly laughable. Yet, he failed to hear the devastation in her voice, the grief, and the raw longing she had for him to live, to continue on in the world, to one day be whole again. But the Domain would be burned by Halo. There would be no connection to its boundless stores of information, no ability to commune and heal and reflect. A thousand centuries would pass in silence. In the madness the Gravemind had created for him. And once the galaxy was reseeded, civilizations rose once more, and he woke to start the cycle of suffering all over again. He was awash in remorse, in the betrayal he had caused, the fury at having been violated and manipulated and used. . . . A pawn! He roared, slamming his fists against the rock with such force that it cracked the stone and left him stricken with sorrow. In the end, after all he had done, all the pain and suffering he had wrought . . . She had still chosen to save him.

Neither of them had any feel for the passage of time. It could have been days before he regained enough strength to go to the faucet in the bathroom. He drank until his stomach could hold no more and returned with a glass of water. Lifting her head with his arm, he brought the edge of the glass to Gail's mouth. She sipped at it. Her lips were cracked, her eyes bloodshot and ringed with yellowish crumbs, but there was some color in her skin. "When are we going to die?" she asked, her voice a feeble croak. "I want to hold you when we die."
"Are they… the disease. Is it talking to you?" He nodded. "Then I'm not crazy." She walked slowly across the living room. "I'm not going to be able to move much longer," she said. "How about you? Maybe we should try to escape." He held her hand and shook his head. "They're inside, part of us by now. They are us. Where can we escape?" "Then I'd like to be in bed with you, when we can't move any more. And I want your arms around me." They lay back on the bed and held each other.
Buried in some inner perspective, neither one place nor another. He felt an increase in warmth, a closeness and compelling presence.
Edward Gail? I can hear you- no, not hear you Edward, I should be terrified. I want to be angry but I can't.
They fell quiet and simply reveled in each other's company. What Edward sensed nearby was not the physical form of Gail; not even his own picture of her personality, but something more convincing, with all the grit and detail of reality, but not as he had ever experienced her before.
Edward and Gail grew together on the bed, substance passing through their clothes, skin joining where they embraced and lips where they touched.

Dinosaur Summer by Greg Bear
Cover art by Tony DiTerlizzi
Aspect / Warner Books, February 1998
Fifty years after Professor Challenger’s discovery of the Lost World, America’s last dinosaur circus has gone bankrupt, leaving a dozen avisaurs, centrosaurs, ankylosaurs, and one large raptor abandoned. Now a daring expedition plans to do the impossible: return the Jurassic giants to the wild. Two filmmakers, a circus trainer, a journalist, and a young Peter Belzoni must find a way to take the dinosaurs across oceans, continents, rivers, jungles, up a mountain that has been isolated for seventy thousand years . . . Then, if they make it, all they will do is face the prehistoric wonders, dangers, and terrors of the Lost World.

Cruelty and Creativity - A Forerunner Saga Gift Exchange (Interest Check)
Attention all Lifeworkers, Warrior-Servants, Builders, Miners, Juridicals, and even Engineers!
A few months ago I proposed a fandom gift exchange centering around Greg Bear’s The Forerunner Saga, and kicked around the idea of timing it to the release of Halo: Epitaph, the new Halo novel about the Ur-Didact by Kelly Gay.
Well, rumors swirl now that we may have a release date! The book is said to come out October 27th, although as always I’m sure that is subject to change. To my knowledge it has not been officially confirmed by 343, either. Regardless, at the very least, I think it’s a sign that it’s time to start talking about this thing.
I did a very informal interest check a bit ago, but I think now’s the time to do one for real. Reply or reblog or what have you to this post to let me know how you would feel about taking part! This is just to gauge how many people MIGHT be interested in participating in something like this. It is not a promise that you will! Formal signups will come later.
The premise is this; each participant will be randomly assigned to another one, like a Secret Santa, and will make a gift for their giftee. It will be fairly flexible as to the nature of the gift; fic, fanart, etc are all allowed. I won’t set a “minimum” word count or anything yet until things are more finalized, but I’m thinking somewhere around a 1000 word fic or a flat, colored piece of art. Feel free to share your thoughts about that as well! (I am very much an amateur when it comes to art so any artists’ thoughts on what would be appropriate are particularly welcome.)
I’d eternally appreciate you guys sharing this around if you’d like, to help it reach a wider audience! Thanks everyone, and remember; you are what you dare!
(Also, tagging people who seemed interested from the last post: @monitorchakas @eri-223 @cappurrccino )
