As we look at the White Sox, there are two immediate needs to be addressed either this offseason or the next. They are outfield (specifically center) and starting pitching. Kopech is out for 2019 because of Tommy John surgery. Thatâs just a reality now, so the front office needs to find someone to fill his 2019 innings. Currently, they have Reynaldo LĂłpez, Carlos RodĂłn, and Lucas Giolito in the rotation. James Shields is a free agent. Dylan Covey is not consistent enough if the White Sox want to be around .500 next season or at least see some improvement.
As far as centerfield goes, every potential future centerfielder for the White Sox is on the Winston-Salem Dash. Iâm not kidding: Luis Robert, Blake Rutherford, Luis Alexander Basabe, and Micker Adolfo are all high-A ball right now. That means someone has to play center for the White Sox until one of those guys breaks through. I do not see Ryan Cordell as a future centerfielder. Perhaps he can play left or right, but for now, letâs explore free agency for the two most important needs:
First Tier Starting Pitchers ($17 million +/year):
Dallas Keuchel
Patrick Corbin
Hyun-Jin Ryu
Gio Gonzalez
J.A. Happ
These are estimates for the best starters in free agency. On top of it, theyâre all lefties. I truly think that if the White Sox want to contend, they need to sign one of these starters to a multi-year deal. In fact, Rick Hahn said he was going to pursue a starter. Well, Rick, the Sox fanbase wants you to fork some cash over to one of the above. Iâm sure they would be very satisfied if you did.
Second Tier Starting Pitchers ($11-17 million/year):
Garrett Richards
Jeremy Hellickson
Nathan Eovaldi
Lance Lynn
Wade Miley
I broke these guys into a different tier because they may not have been as consistent in the last few years as the âFirst Tierâ starters, but they are still solid.
Inning Eaters (League Min-11 million, most likely 1-year deal only):
James Shields
Bartolo Colon
Drew Pomeranz
Miguel Gonzalez
Tyson Ross
I think some combination of 1 pitcher from either the first or second tier and an inning eater would work. I would call that a success on the part of Rick Hahn. I would love to have two from both of the top tiers, but I do not see that happening given the track record of the White Sox spending money.
Letâs proceed to centerfield (or any outfield):
First Tier ($17-$35 million):
Bryce Harper
Andrew McCutchen
A.J. Pollock
Adam Jones
Second Tier ($10-17 million):
Marwin Gonzalez
Michael Brantley
Lonnie Chisenhall
Brett Gardner
Nick Markakis
Third Tier ($5-10 million):
Carlos Gonzalez
Jon Jay
Cameron Maybin
Carlos Gomez
Matt Joyce
Obviously, everyone wants Bryce Harper. I do not think the Sox will get him, but in that top tier and even the second tier, there are some other good baseball players. Some are older than others, but that said, the Sox have a market to their advantage. There is a lot of outfield talent in this free agent class. I know not everyone above is a centerfielder, but the ones who are not, are still serviceable in multiple outfield (or infield) positions. Yasiel Puig is also entering the last arbitration year of his contract, so who knows what will happen there. Either way, the Sox should make a splash in this market because their centerfield talent isnât MLB ready just yet.
These are my favorite articles to write. I know speculation is sometimes stupid, but hope is all you have when your team loses 100 games in a season. The future is bright, but if you look at where the playoff teams get most of their talent, itâs via trade or free agency. See the above graph.
The Chicago White Sox are a top 5 farm system. In order to supplement that farm system, they have to start spending this offseason, even if itâs just filling an outfield spot and a starting pitcher. That suffices, but we need to know they are willing to spend when necessary. Paying to get Luis Robert was a step in the right direction. Letâs do it this offseason with the major crop of talent we have in this free agency class. D.J. out!

Jeremy Hellickson not happy with quick hook, but that's modern baseball
Washington's starter on Friday was pulled in the sixth inning even though he was pitching well. No one should be shocked that it happened.

Offseason needs for the Chicago Cubs
Offseason needs for the Chicago Cubs
The 2019 season, unfortunately, did not go the Cubs way. With a disappointing season result despite an 84-74 record, the Cubs finished third and did not make the postseason. The Cubs front office later let then-manager Joe Madden go after 6 years and a World Series title. On October 29th the Cubsâ front office named David Ross a former backup catcher for the Cubs during the 2016âŠ

ST. LOUIS | Gant homers, pitches Cardinals to 6-4 win over Nationals
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/vUPiEn
ST. LOUIS | Gant homers, pitches Cardinals to 6-4 win over Nationals
ST. LOUISÂ â Even John Gant cracked a smile.
Gant homered for his first major league hit and pitched one-run ball into the sixth inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 6-4 on Tuesday night for their season-high seventh consecutive victory.
Kolten Wong had three hits and three RBIs as St. Louis (65-55) pulled within four games of the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs and moved within one game of the Philadelphia Phillies for the second NL wild card. The Cardinals also improved to 18-9 since Mike Shildt was named interim manager on July 13, the most wins for a manager through his first 27 games in franchise history.
âThings are starting to click for us,â Wong said. âWeâre playing confident. Weâre out there playing aggressive and I think itâs the kind of baseball Cardinals fans have been waiting for.â
The Nationals (60-60) have dropped six of eight to fall eight games behind Atlanta in the NL East.
âWeâve just got to keep pulling the same rope, keep grinding it out, keep trying to win ballgames,â Nationals slugger Bryce Harper said. Gant (5-4) permitted four hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. He has given up just two earned runs over 11 1/3 innings in his last two starts, both wins.
The 26-year-old Gant was 0 for 30 for his career when he drove a 1-1 pitch from Gio Gonzalez (7-9) over the wall in left in the second. The two-run shot gave Washington a 3-0 lead.
âI was jogging kind of my hands in the air,â said Wong, who scored on Gantâs homer. âI already knew it was going out. Looking back I think he almost caught me.â
Added Gant, âI thought it was going to hit the wall maybe but when I finally looked up and (Wong) was looking back at me, thatâs when I knew it was going over the wall.â
Gant, who has a reputation for being a stoic player, admitted to smiling âonce or twiceâ once he got back to the dugout.
Wongâs solo homer made it 6-1 in the sixth, but Washington responded with three in the eighth. Harper hit a two-run shot, and Daniel Murphy singled in Anthony Rendon.
Matt Adams then struck out looking against Dakota Hudson, ending the inning, and Jordan Hicks worked the ninth for his fourth save in eight chances.
Paul DeJong also doubled and scored for St. Louis one night after he connected for a game-ending homer in a 7-6 victory. Matt Carpenter walked in the sixth to extend his on-base streak to 32 games.
âWe have a 25-man roster and we have confidence in all of them,â Shildt said. âTheyâre here for a reason and guys are looking to contribute every night and in different ways.â
Gonzalez was charged with five runs and five hits in four innings. The veteran left-hander is just 1-4 in his last six starts.
âI wasnât hitting my spots,â Gonzalez said. âJust not being as consistent in the strike zone as I should be. Itâs just one of those games you canât explain.â
IRONMAN St. Louis star Yadier Molina played in his 22nd consecutive game, the most by a catcher 35 years or older in major league history.
TRAINING ROOM Nationals: Reliever Ryan Madson was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a back injury. RHP Trevor Gott and LHP Tim Collins were promoted from Triple-A Syracuse, LHP Sammy Solis was sent down, and RHP Erick Fedde was moved from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Cardinals: OF Tyler OâNeill (groin) was activated from the 10-day disabled list and OF Adolis Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
UP NEXT The Nationals will start right-hander Jeremy Hellickson (5-2, 3.54 ERA) in the third game of a four-game set. Austin Gomber (2-0, 3.45 ERA) pitches for the Cardinals on Wednesday night. Hellickson is 2-2 with a 4.13 ERA in five career starts against St. Louis. Gomber is coming off his first win as a starter in a 7-0 Cardinals victory against the Kansas City Royals last Friday.
