I am so so happy that the Dear Evan Hansen movie was laughably bad. I hated that show so fucking much, and the world would absolutely be a worse place if that movie was successful and inspired even MORE productions of the stage show. I mean I would have been seeing FAN ART of the movie if it had been competently made, and thank FUCK that didn't happen.
Here's the Jenny Nicholson review that I am currently watching for a second time, if you wanna see the one good thing to come from this horrible musical:
youtube
#original#dear evan hansen#dear evan hansen movie#Jenny Nicholson#i remember being 23 and suicidal and hearing the big hopeful song from that musical and being like...#is this? song about suicide prevention SUPPOSED to make me want to do it more?????#and while a friend tried to argue that it was intentionally made hollow i later found out that this was not the case#the musical is very earnest about its suicide prevention messaging in the song i had heard and it is NOT supposed to make folks crave death#who knew!!!#ME. I DID. I CALLED IT.#I KNEW.#Youtube#like can you IMAGINE a world where Evan was played by some teenage heart throb !#and if it had baseline competent direction??#all the depressed teen girls who would suddenly be vehemently and emotionally defending the film from any kind of criticism#and lashing out viciously at people on Twitter for pointing out how shitty and harmful the narrative is???#and all the HIGH SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS that would have happened and GENUINELY GIVEN KIDS THIS HORRIBLE HARMFUL SHIT directly!!!!!#thANK you ben platt for playing this role in this movie#and thank you whoever cut together this ghoulish little film#terrible job everyone but good news is that dear evan hansen is a terrible thing so you've done a net good.#bad art can sometimes save lives. [by mitigating some of the harm that it was and is already doing. but still.]#also if this story was a good thing in someone's life that is fine good for them but nothing will convince me that this show is a good thing

As frustrating as I find the way that Jenny Calendar is often written in the show, it is nonetheless kind of bizarre to me how the fandom has collectively -- and fairly consistently -- decided to give her a set of personality traits that she simply doesn't show any sign of having in canon.
Remember that, in canon, it's Giles (and not Jenny) who rebels at the idea of sending Buffy to die fighting the Master in Prophecy Girl (Jenny only comments that she's surprised the Slayer is "so little"). It's Giles, too, who Buffy turns to for reassurance when she thinks she's made any serious mistake (whether that's in how she treated her friends in When She Was Bad or her role in Angel losing his soul in Innocence). It's Joyce (and, for obvious reasons, not Jenny) who looks after Buffy, Willow and Xander when they all get sick at the end of Killed By Death and who lets the group hang out in her kitchen (at the end of Helpless, for example) and who offers to make everyone hot chocolate after letting them spend the night at her house in Restless. It's adult figures who appear in only a single episode, like Teacher's Pet's Dr Gregory and Beauty and the Beasts' Mr Platt, who offer Buffy praise and encouragement at a time she's not getting it from Joyce or Giles.
Jenny Calendar's only relationship to Buffy in canon -- beyond being her metaphorical father's on-again, off-again girlfriend -- is to be variously somebody she blames (for reasons the plot isn't ever quite clear on) for her boyfriend having lost his soul and then somebody she blames herself for not being able to save from said soulless boyfriend. Buffy and Jenny don't even seem to like each other. Jenny does have more of a connection with Willow, but it's not a particularly nuturing or parental one (she gets Willow to help her out in class because Willow is obviously competent, but she doesn't encourage Willow to think about plans for her future or ask about Willow's home life or really offer any kind of support beyond being one of her school teachers). I can believe Willow looks up to Jenny a lot and even has a (repressed) crush on her, and she does seem to shape her life post-Season 2 around Jenny in ways the show never explicitly acknowledges ... but that's all stuff happening on Willow's side; I don't think there's evidence Jenny is equally invested in their relationship. She hardly seems thrilled when Xander and Willow show up to interupt her first date with Giles. Her only involvement in Cordelia and Xander's lives is to make them come in on a Saturday for remedial computer science. She only interacts with neophyte magic practioner Amy Madison in one [terrible] episode, and said interaction is limited to squabbling over the romantic affections of Xander Harris [look, I said it was a terrible episode...]. She never even meets Kendra; they don't appear in any of the same episodes.
And yet for some reason we have all -- and I include myself in this -- apparently decided that, okay, maybe Joyce and Giles would let Faith live out of a motel for months, but if she'd been around in Season 3 there's no way Jenny would've let that slide. Jenny is The Good Parent, you see. But ... why? Because she referred to Buffy and her friends as "the kids" a grand total of one time? What shred of evidence is there in canon to support this reading?
#btvs#the reductive reading I guess is that fandom has decided that (1) Giles is The Dad and that (2) this means his girlfriend must be The Mom#with all the sterotypical character traits that implies#but surely we're not all quite that stupid?#or is it just that Giles and Joyce are often deeply flawed and let Buffy down again and again in canon#but we can treat poor underwritten Jenny as a blank slate who doesn't have their failings (or any other consistent personality traits)?

Women That Turlough Has Been Depicted Being Attracted To
This almost definitely isn't a complete list, but it's what I can definitely confirm.
TW: The two PDA examples are dubcon at best.
Imperial Moon (Past Doctor Adventure, Christopher Bulis, 2000): Lytalia
Gets Turlough to fall in love with her as part of an evil plan. Her species produces pheromones that can sort of mind control humanoid males. Trions are humanoid males, so it’s possible that he became infatuated with her because of mind control pheromones that would make virtually any humanoid male fall for her.
The King of Terror (Past Doctor Adventure, Keith Topping, 2000): Eva Oblon
Turlough seems out of character going to a bar, getting absolutely wasted, and actively trying to pick up girls. Eva lures him to her apartment and turns out to be an evil alien who needs alien DNA to take of the world. This leads to an extended period of uncomfortably sexualized torture and her continuing to flirt with him for no practical reason, since he’s afraid of her now. He violently murders her and calls her a bitch and I honestly don’t blame him.
Loups-Garoux (Big Finish, Marc Platt, 2001): Rosa Caiman
It’s implied that they have sex but in a way that’s very easy to interpret as chaste cuddling that Rosa sees more significance in than Turlough does. When the Doctor brings her up to Turlough he says there’s nothing between them.
Kiss of Death (Big Finish, Stephen Cole, 2011): Deela
A past relationship on Trion. Turlough was the bad boy Deela’s dad told her to stay away from. In the present, Turlough will only kiss her when literally held at gunpoint.
Gardens of the Dead (Big Finish Short Trip, Jenny T Colgan, 2016): Nyssa
Apparently Turlough had a crush on Nyssa that lasted forever. Because everyone has a crush on Nyssa in Big Finish. That probably includes Peter Davison and at least half the writers.
So we have a situation that can be blamed on mind control, a situation involving alcohol, torture, and a lack of consent, an ambiguous possible misunderstanding, awkwardly executed backstory, and the same crush that basically every character in Big Finish Doctor Who has.
#vislor turlough#imperial moon#the king of terror#loups garoux#kiss of death#gardens of the dead#this is how you can have so many examples of turlough apparently being straight and still have him come across as gay#none of these feel like they should count#accept for maybe deela?

Another Loki Playlist?!
If you're tired of the comic posts, I've got good news for you. If you're not tired of the comic posts, I've got more on the way.
I said on my last playlist post that I have six Loki-themed playlists. I've posted about 4 of them on the blog, and the fifth is Sigyn-specific that is an overlap of the Sylgyn and Logyn playlists. So now I'm posting about the (currently) last one: Frostiron. There are some overlap songs with my main playlist.
Many of these are specifically frostiron vibes from my Nights on the Roof series, though some were originally pulled from other frostiron playlists I've listened to.
"All Through the Night", Sleeping At Last
"In Case You Don't Live Forever," Ben Platt
"Temporary Love," Ben Platt
"North," Sleeping At Last
"For the Dancing and the Dreaming," from How to Train Your Dragon 2
"The Last of the Real Ones," Fall Out Boy
"The Lighthouse Keeper," Sam Smith
"Fair," The Amazing Devil
"Who Wants to Live Forever," Queen
"Immortals," Fall Out Boy
"Asleep At Last," The Wailin' Jennys
"I'll Be Your Man," Passenger
"Feels Like Home," Josh Groban
"Running Home to You," Grant Gustin
"Twilight of the Gods," from Thor: Ragnarok
"Wouldn't It Be Nice," The Beach Boys
"Someone Who Loves Me," Sara Bareilles
"Til Kingdom Come," Coldplay

This week's theme: Rec a fic that starts with the same letter as your username (or, if you like, a part of your username).
The rules: Tag a fic that starts with the same letter as your username and describe why it's so good / how it has a hold on you. Then tag some people to see what everyone else is reading. Spread the love! Please tag @welcometololaland or tag #fic rec friday so they can compile the masterlist.
Okay, so clearly, I can’t read because I chose fics that started with an “S” for my actual first name and not my URL lol. I tried to fix this, but the amount of fics that start with a “P” in my bookmarks is almost nonexistent. So I’m going to just stick with my incorrectness; forgive me. Lola - thank you for always tagging me; I finally managed to post because looking through my AO3 bookmarks made this “easier.” You know how indecisive I am. Lol. I also promise I tried to keep this short, and this is what keeping it short looks like.😂

911 Lone Star
Say You’ll Remember Me: This is a Ryderdie WIP by @myemergence, and I really look forward to more. It’s one of my absolute favorite tropes (Amnesia!) and a canon-divergent AU for 2x9 featuring one of the best fictional couples to ever exist. I love Judd and Grace Ryder so much. Jenny nails the angst in that way where it hurts but GOSH it is good. It’s just *chef’s kiss* and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the journey takes us.
Searching For A Trail to Follow Again: Paige’s (@sunshinestrand) fics are classic, butterflies in your stomach, grinning from ear-to-ear, romantic comedies. This AU was so charming and, like all of Paige’s writing, leaves you with the biggest smile on your face because you’re just over-the-moon Carlos and TK have found one another in this story and in all her AUs (again and again and again). Contrary to popular belief among certain showrunners, letting characters just be happy is quality and compelling storytelling, and I’m grateful for fic writers like Paige who know that and give us a slice of that joy.
So Many Somethings: Rae’s (@iboatedhere) AUs are iconic by now, but this one will always be near and dear to my heart. Not just because it’s the You’ve Got Mail AU and it’s an incredible nod to the film, but also because it was the first fic I ever beta-read for her, and the whole process bonded us. Rae, thanks for trusting me! This fic is remarkable, I love the balance of enemies-friends-lovers and the banter. Oh, the Banter™️. Nora Ephron would be proud!
Sanctuary: If I had to use one word to summarize this fic, it would be ✨DESTINY✨. Honestly, I think all of Kim’s (@reyescarlos) fics have a destiny vibe to them, you can feel that these two characters are meant to be together, and they will find a way. I loved the first meeting in this one; the tension in the scene was palpable, and Kim’s writing always makes you feel like every interaction is happening right in front of you. She’s magic in that way ✨.
Slowly Becoming Lovers: I love fics that show us the little moments between Carlos and TK, how they fall in love through the little things, and the way Holly (@morganaspendragonss) portrays that journey in these short vignettes is so so SO beautiful. This is one of the fics I have reread the most, according to the AO3 clicks lol, and there is a reason for that. It is truly lovely. Also, the title is inspired by one of my favorite Ben Platt songs, and fits the story perfectly! Highly recommend!
Red, White, and Royal Blue
Snowed in? Snow problem: This fic is such a blast to read, lol. I laughed so hard, and I still laugh just as hard when I reread it because the ugh!Hunter slander is top-tier. A direct quote: “Well, I’m not bunking in with Hunter or you’ll be dealing with a murder by the end of the day.” Same, Alex. Same. Forever mood.😂 Add to that, “there was only one bed” plus Rae’s (@rmd-writes) ability to write Sexual Tension™️ x 5467893204858, and this college au is a must-read. Also, THE TITLE. YAAASS. A+ pun. No notes.
Sink Beneath the Waves: This fic. THIS FIC. You know how in every fandom, there are stories that are essentially required reading, this one by @indomitable-love is one of those fics for me in the RWRB fandom. The love, the yearning, the pain, and the utter joy at Henry’s “I’m into making History.” Getting the chance to see these canon plot points from Henry’s POV is a gift, and I’m so grateful this fic exists for us to revisit again and again.
****
I think this has made the rounds already because it is Saturday for me, so consider this an open tag to whoever has fics they would like to share with us!

Top five Buffy characters who only appeared in one episode? Or if you want just top five Buffy characters you'd want to have seen more of
I think any list of the top five Buffy characters I'd liked to have seen more of would be pretty predictable: Faith, Amy and Kendra for sure. Probably Jenny Calendar too (although this requires the Season 2 writers to actually care about her enough to make her an actual character with a personality and motives). Not sure who the fifth would be. Ethan, maybe? Drusilla? Mr Platt?
For best one episode characters though, I'm a bit more confident on my list.
Billy Fordham [from S2E07 Lie To Me]
Lie To Me is a great episode, setting the tone for the rest of the season to come, and while Ford isn't the only reason it works so well he is definitely one of the reasons it does. There's a trend in the first couple of seasons where the show will introduce a character we've never met before, claim they have some important connection to the cast, only for them to die that episode and never be mentioned ever again. Ford is definitely in that tradition -- and I think later seasons of the show would have given him the Scott Hope or Parker Abrams treatement, introducing him a couple of episodes earlier before the big betrayal -- but in his case suddenly appearing out of nowhere works in a way that Xander's various former bullies and Willow's constantly changing intellectual competition don't always manage to do. The impact of his actions on Buffy by the end of the episode doesn't seem unearned at all.
Ted [from S2E11 Ted]
Arguably one of the show's best single episode villains ever from a consistently under-rated episode. An episode which asks deep questions that the show will come back to again and again; questions like "what if the Slayer accidentally killed a person? can she justify that to herself?" and "how would Buffy's mother react if she told her she was the Slayer; would she think Buffy was crazy?" and "what if there was some kind of freaky robot? that'd be weird, right?". But for all the goofiness of the end of the episode, there's something genuinely unsettling about the way Ted veers between John Ritter's usual sitcom dad persona and the controlling, abusive figure that only Buffy ever sees. If anything, the reveal that Ted is an unkillable monster with a string of murders to his name makes him significantly less scary than he was before.
Gwendolyn Post [from S307 Revelations]
Mrs Gwendolyn Post has so much fun being evil and making everybody's lives a little worse that I'm willing to forgive her for the fact her actual plan is laughably short-sighted and was obviously never going to work for long. Of all the Watcher-affiliated characters we actually see on screen (so, not counting Faith's first Watcher or Kendra's Watcher, both of whom I wish we'd seen as well), she's the one I wish we'd seen a little more of in the show.
Fun fact: depending on where exactly you draw the line, Gwendolyn Post is arguably the adult human woman with the fourth most speaking time over the show's entire run (after Joyce Summers, Jenny Calendar and Maggie Walsh). And yet she's only in this one single episode. Bonus fun fact: that sucks, actually.
Sunday [from S4E01 The Freshman]
Bizarrely, Sunday is one of the last named vampires the show would introduce, despite her sole epsiode falling in the first half of the show's run. I think there are ... what, maybe half a dozen more after this episode? (I understand the various factors behind it, but I think it's a shame that there are fewer and fewer actual vampire villains in the show as it progresses beyond the high school seasons.) Sunday is really fun though; I like The Freshman a lot (as I've said in another post recently), and she's a big part of why. She should have been in more episodes, frankly.
Cassie Newton [from S7E04 Help]
I've talked before about how much I like Help (and the early episodes of Season 7 more generally). I like the human level focus. I like the idea of Dawn getting to go to a new school and make new friends. I like Buffy having the chance to metaphorically go back in time and try to save her younger self. I like all the callbacks to the high school seasons. I like how unsubtle the name 'Cassandra' is. I like Cassie. She was great.
(Yes, the actor returns later this season but the character herself doesn't, so she counts.)
