Ekmeles - We Live the Opposite Daring - vocal ensemble's new album of modern works by six composers
Following up on a debut release with New Focus that was hailed as "spectacular" by The Whole Note and "remarkable" by textura, Ekmeles vocal ensemble, led by director Jeffrey Gavett, brings their crystalline performance style to new works by Zosha Di Castri, James Weeks, Hannah Kendall, Shawn Jaeger, and Erin Gee on We Live the Opposite Daring. Contemporary music for a capella voices has a vast body of repertoire from which to take inspiration, both in the Western classical tradition and from the music of all cultures. The music on Ekmeles’ newest release, We Live the Opposite Daring, does so in fascinating and intentional ways, referencing the past through tuning systems, texts, extended vocal techniques, and poignant histories. Ekmeles’ performance throughout these demanding works is nothing short of sublime. From the demands of Weeks’ microtonal pitch language to Gee’s multi-timbral hybrid textures and everything in between, Ekmeles proves once again why they are one of the pre-eminent contemporary vocal chamber groups in the world. The inventive repertoire they have commissioned pushes boundaries across multiple musical parameters, but remains grounded in the firmament of musical lineage. – Dan Lippel  Ekmeles: Charlotte Mundy, soprano Elisa Sutherland, mezzo-soprano Timothy Parsons, countertenor Tomás Cruz, tenor Jeffrey Gavett, baritone and artistic director Steven Hrycelak, bass Art and design: Alex Eckman-Lawn

06.20.17 On the eve of Petr Kotik’s 75th birthday, S.E.M. ensemble staged a recital at their HQ on Willow Place in Brooklyn Heights. The evening began with Kotik’s delicate ‘Etude 7 for Oboe’ (1962) for solo oboe played by Jacqueline Leclair. Robert Boston then brilliantly performed Philip Glass’ dizzying ‘Two Pages’ (1968) for organ. This was followed by excellent performances of Kotik’s vocal pieces ‘There is Singularly Nothing’ (1972) and ‘Many Many Women’ (1975-78) [excerpt] featuring Roberta Michel and Petr Kotik on flute, William Lang and James Roger on trombones with the intertwining voices of sopranos Kamala Sankaram and Vivian Yau with baritones Jacob Ingbar and Jeffrey Gavett.

Ekmeles - A Howl, That Was Also A Prayer - vocal sextet (New Focus Recordings)
Hailed as a "brilliant young ensemble... defining a fresh and virtuosic American sound" (The New Yorker), vocal ensemble Ekmeles celebrates the release of their first solo album” A Howl, That Was Also A Prayer.” The recording consists of three innovative looks at what singing could be in the 21st century. Extremely fine microtonal gradations of pitch, innovative electronics, and imaginative vocal techniques and timbres come together to express Ekmeles's unique contribution to vocal music. The album includes Ekmeles commissions by Christopher Trapani and Taylor Brook that highlight both composers’ innovative approaches to microtonal composition. Rounding out the album is Erin Gee’s Three Scenes from Sleep, music that integrates extended vocal techniques and taut rhythmic gestures within a long range harmonic progression. Ekmeles’ "A Howl, That Was Also A Prayer” is a landmark album for contemporary vocal music, with the ambition of the compositions only matched by the stunning virtuosity and symbiotic cohesion of the ensemble. -J.
