Blaska's ballot looks like this:
Garbage in, garbage out! Unlike The Washington Post — or Amazon.com for that matter — Blaska Policy Werkes endorses candidates. In many cases, we help the candidates we support by endorsing their opponents. The old switcheroo, as KC Chiefs Coach Andy Reid might say. Donald Segretti would be proud. Donald Trump riding a garbage truck in Green Bay WI in response to the Uncle Joe Biden’s latest…

Attack of the Crab Monsters is Chad’s pick and according to him, there is a lot going on for a movie that is so bad and so corny. In the end, it’s a monster B-movie from Roger Corman with a lot of cool concepts for a giant crab film. Daphne has a lot of fun watching Attack of the Crab Monsters. She loved the strange dialogue and seeing the professor (Russell Johnson) from Gilligan’s Island. Joseph’s mind is blown by how much they tried to shove into a one-hour film, but still, Attack of the Crab Monsters seemed long. Agreeing that the movie is really bad and the crabs are really bad, Jeff still loves Attack of the Crab Monsters. You have to love Russell Johnson trapped on an island and trying to fix the radio long before he takes that fateful three-hour tour.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next on their very flexible schedule, chosen by Daphne, is Hammer’s Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966) featuring Christopher Lee.

S2V 2017
[From left to right: Todd Plaunt, Andrew van Leeuwen, Pete Nelson, Michael Smith, Mark Carson, Brian Boram, Kevin Eckert, Albert Shum, Jeff Johnson, Peter Gray, Aaron Pambianco, Paul Jaqua, Chris Mears, Blair Casey, Brandon Boudreaux, Greg Plaunt, Bill Weigand]
Something remarkable happened this last summer. Each year, at the end of August, we round up our comrades and ride for two days from Seattle to Vancouver, British Columbia. It’s a chance to close our laptops, get some serious fitness, and spend time with an exceptional crew of individuals, all while enjoying the spectacle of summer in the Pacific Northwest. Like every year, we carefully chose a compelling non-profit organization to direct our contributions to, and, like every year, we called on our community to contribute to that organization. This year we made an especially unreasonable financial goal, doubling our initial pledge, and asked our community to dig deep and give generously. We asked people to give as if lives depend on it. And then the amazing part happened, they did. Our community of past and current clients, family, friends and colleagues knocked the ball out of the park.  The generosity was stunning. This year’s S2V ride raised over $40,000 for Team Gleason and Bikeworks.
This is the 4th year we’ve supported Bike Works and you can read about their outstanding organization in past S2V recaps here, here, and here.
Team Gleason was founded by Steve Gleason in 2012. He’s the classic story of ‘local boy does good’. Raised in Spokane, Washington, Steve went on to play football at Washington State University, was drafted by the NFL in 2000, and spent 8 seasons with the New Orleans Saints. In 2011, and shortly before the birth of his son, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Once diagnosed, he greatly expanded upon his early interest in documenting his life for his son, River, to create a living video journal. In Steve’s words, “that’s what dad’s do, they pass the best of themselves to their kids.” The documentary is heartbreaking, but also amazing and ultimately uplifting. To put it simply, we all feel fortunate to have good health, but following the story of Steve and his remarkable journey, we feel this at a more profound depth. The trailer of Gleason is available online and the film can be viewed on Amazon or iTunes. Since the diagnosis, Steve and his relentless team at the Gleason Foundation have helped provide individuals with neuromuscular diseases or injuries with leading edge technology, equipment and services. They’ve also created a global conversation about ALS to ultimately find solutions and an end to the disease.
[Clockwise from top left: Greg Plaunt, Brandon Boudreaux, Blair Casey, Steve Gleason]
What really hit home with the S2V team was the realization of the reliance on technology for individuals with advanced stages of ALS. Machines and technology are necessary for everything from breathing and eating to communicating and interacting with others. Individuals with advanced ALS use eye-tracking, computer, and speech generation technology that allows them to live purposeful and productive lives. These systems begin at a cost of around $12,000 apiece and a few years ago the funding for this system was at risk as a potential cut in national health coverage was proposed. Without coverage for this eye-tracking technology, individuals with ALS lose the ability to communicate with the rest of the world, leaving people with the feeling that they are expected to fade away quietly and die. Thanks to the efforts of Team Gleason, whose philosophy is poignantly, “No White Flags”, the Steve Gleason Act was signed in 2015 by President Obama to assure the availability of sustaining communication devices. Since its start, Team Gleason has also funded over $3 million in assistive technology to help others with ALS. They are a remarkable organization and we were moved to put our pedal power behind them.
To show their commitment, Team Gleason responded by sending one of their own. Blair Casey, a family friend and caretaker (you might recognize him from the documentary) and his friend Brandon.  Using borrowed bikes, they trained all summer, dropped weight and flew up from New Orleans to the ride with their A-game (someone may have erroneously mentioned to them that our charity ride was a race, ah hmmm). Amazing. They were also a blast to ride with.
The S2V ride is always adventurous: liberating and filled with camaraderie. This year there was an added sense of inspiration and purpose which we directly attribute to our incredible community who came out in record numbers to financially support our cause. We are grateful and humbled by the generosity of the people around us – thank you.
There are additional thank you’s in order from the entire S2V team. Our fearless leader and organizer, Aaron Pambianco, did all the dirty work behind the scenes to make the ride enjoyable and seamless. Todd Plaunt commanded the team van and made sure the cyclists were well-fueled. Charles Caldwell designed and coordinated the team jersey with Castelli. Greg Plaunt provides tremendous support each year for the ride and brought the Georgia and Tennessee team members out west, and in a year of really generous donors, led the fundraising by example. Thanks to Sarah Danilson from Bike Works for coordinating the day-one lunch for the cyclists. And last but not least, gratitude goes out to our corporate sponsors The Welland Company, Microsoft, BUILD LLC, and AJP Engineering.

The old Hi & Dry (owned by Michael Weigand & Jeff Eisenberg) was among my favorite CLE places in the 1990s. The new @hianddrycle is in the same #Tremont location but totally different concept with new owners. But I was totally impressed when we stopped there tonight. #CLE (at Hi and Dry)

Tuesday's elections offer a lesson
We just don’t know what it is! What can we learn from Tuesday’s election results here in Dane County and throughout Wisconsin? We can’t say because Ol’ Sparky, our Eisenhower-era mainframe computer, is still grinding its gears. We know that voters did approve the two state constitutional amendments banning private money and personnel in the conduct of Wisconsin elections by 54.4% and 58.5%,…

Longhorns Promote Skin Cancer Prevention
Tumblr media
Rachel DeSantis, Keeton Schenck, Nicole Wong, Valerie Vines, Kelsey Ball and Jeff Conley volunteer at the skin cancer screening event in the Student Activity Center (SAC) Ballroom.
Making skin cancer prevention a priority on the Forty Acres, Texas 4000 offered free skin cancer screenings to 300 students, faculty and staff on campus in late March. The organization’s mission is to raise funds for cancer research, while educating the community about prevention.
“It may not be a top priority for students to go get their skin checked but having it free and on campus makes it accessible. We want to help Longhorns take charge of their health in a preventive way,” said sophomore, chemical engineering major Valerie Vines.

Christy Goldberg, Valerie Vines, Steven Aviles, Alex Herbig, Lauren Nix, Madison Weigand, Kelsey Ball and Bailey Anderson during a training event in November.
Vines and nearly 80 fellow Texas 4000 members will ride their bicycles 4,500 miles from Austin to Anchorage this summer. During this ride, the Longhorns visit schools, churches and community centers to give a 30-minute presentation about their cause. Last year, they raised nearly $600,000 for cancer research.
“We’re not just a fitness organization ― we are trying engage the community. We exist to develop student leaders in the fight against cancer,” added Vines.
The group partnered with University Health Services (UHS) to provide the screenings with three physicians during a six-hour period.
“We’re so proud to be part of this event. Any time we can contribute to the cause and support research efforts as a preventive healthcare entity on campus, we’re pleased to be a part of that,” explained UHS Medical Director Dr. David Vander Straten.

Drs. David Vander Straten and Stephen Blair screen students in the SAC.
Vander Straten says that if detected early, skin cancer can be treated well. UHS offers these tips:
• The Bad Kind of Burnt Orange: There is no such thing as a healthy suntan. Any change in your natural skin color indicates damage.
 • Outsmart the Sun: The sun’s rays are strongest 10 a.m.–2 p.m. You can get sunburnt on a cloudy day.
• Seek Sun Protection: Wear a hat, sunglasses and breathable long sleeves/pants.
• But I Love Getting a Tan!: Sun lovers who want a tan without the risk of harmful rays may consider self-tanners or spray tan.

How much more progressivism can you stand?
Can Dane County tolerate 8 dissenters out of 37? It was his greatest achievement as chairman of the Dane County Democrat(ic) Party, Wayne Bigelow boasted back then: defeating David Blaska for re-election to the Dane County Board of Supervisors. Must have been a slow year. In the 18 years since, Madison progressives have extirpated all but two holdouts. One of them is Dave Ripp, who is retiring…

Vote for safe neighborhoods
For all races! We are guessing that more of us read the small-print waivers on those on-line software updates than peruse the Candidate Q&As in our favorite Madison WI morning newspaper. Drop down, maggot, and give me 20! We got an election coming up on April 2! In their own words, candidates answer three questions, including: What can or should the county do to reduce racial disparities in the…
