853: Michael Mode - Getting in the Mode
One of the regular attendees at the annual Abbott’s Get Together, Michael Mode (from Detroit) used to be a very busy trade show magician specializing in auto shows. Now settled with another full time job outside of magic, he maintains his roots by keeping in the loop each year at Colon, Michigan. For a while, Michael used to coordinate the Amish dinners by providing magicians to perform for their families during the Get Togethers. Back in the days of the iTouch, he and Jeff Hobson developed a joke app that sold very well and is now available as a book entitled “Best Jokes Ever.” Michael is also the creator of the two-colored napkins that magicians use for Napkin to Rose.
youtube
This week Michael Mode talks about his work with auto shows, his relationship with Michigan magicians including Franz Harary and Jeff Hobson. Michael discusses the joke app he and Jeff Hobson developed that later became an encyclopedic book. You just look for a subject then find a joke to fit that subject, either clean or mature. Michael also talks about his development of the two-colored napkins used for Napkin to Rose.

Sunshine Sachs must've called in a LOT of favors to get so many famous names on board the Archetypes Podcast and the 40x40 project. Vanity projects that went... nowhere.
Without Sunshine Sachs, IMO it's highly unlikely that M will ever be able to reach the same level of celebrity access on her own.
If there are any names missing from these lists, please comment below 👇

The Next Time Perfection is out of the question for people like us, so why plug away at the same old self when the landscape has opened its arms and given us marvelous shrines to flock towards? The great motels to the west are waiting, in somebody's yard a pristine dog is hoping that we'll drive by, and on the rubber surface of a lake people bobbing up and down will wave. The highway comes right to the door, so let's take off before the world out there burns up. Life should be more than the body's weight working itself from room to room. A turn through the forest will do us good, so will a spin among the farms. Just think of the chickens strutting, the cows swinging their udders, and flicking their tails at flies. And one can imagine prisms of summer light breaking against the silent, haze-filled sleep of the farmer and his wife. - Mark Strand link

715: Paul Stone - No Stone Unturned
Paul Stone has been a mainstay in the world of magic without gaining the true notoriety he deserves because of his work behind the scenes. Paul is the driving force behind his company, SHOWSTEALERS LLC. Paul is an experienced Producer of hundreds of Corporate Events and Shows, amongst them in the UK include shows at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, Her Majesty’s Theatre and 18 shows at the world famous London Palladium Theatre, including the widely acclaimed ‘Tribute to Siegfried & Roy at the London Palladium’ in 2008. Paul has produced Shows in Las Vegas at Caesars Palace, Mirage, Harrahs, Orleans and the Suncoast Hotel & Casino.
The working pros know him and go to him when they need help producing a gala event. Not only a producer, Paul is also a trade show performer and creator of magic tricks such as “Overboard” which is a quality prop with endless possibilities and is in my personal trade show.
In this episode, Paul tells one story after another about Ken Brooke, Paul Daniels, Fred Kaps, Hans Moretti, John Fisher, Wayne Dobson, and so many others. As a producer who works behind the scenes on big events, he has all the great stories. From a young man in Liverpool to a grown man in Las Vegas, Paul has met and worked with all of the top magic names from one side of the pond to the other.

Warlord No. 429, 11 December 1982. Cover by Jeff Bevan.
The title logo shown above was used on Warlord between No. 422 and 445. From No. 446 it changed to one that was similar to the original although the text bar down the right hand side remained in place until No. 473.
The title logo then remained largely unchanged until No. 612 in 1986 with No. 627 being the final issue after a very respectable run of 12 years.

What’s sweet but not cutesy?

(Hopefully by this point you’ve finished all 99 minutes of 'Laggies’, the kind of person who isn’t bothered by spoilers, or are just deciding if you still want to keep watching.)

Now I have the answer to: ‘Can Keira play someone other than an English person?’!!
(And yes...I would like to meet those people who only would have watched Keira in this one...thinking that she’s an American.)
It's just like 'Captain Marvel' in a way that it takes 30 minutes to find its feet. And I was surprised too on how Keira was able to pull of 'LA High School Cheerleeder' (or at least....the more 'air-head sounding accent and tone that comes with it). The reason I thought that she hasn't played an American yet...was...because she struggled with it.
One thing was interesting though....was that Megan seemed to have that lower register of voice...which reminds me when Frances McDormand mentioning (was it in her SAG talk?) that to get the Minnesota tone...she had to keep smiling...which was a struggle to deliver lines during the more serious scenes.
PS: I was hoping to get more a bit about the background of how Keira pulled the ‘Californian Accent’ off. Was it something she already had in her pocket waiting for someone to ask her? Maybe you’ll be able to spot it somewhere in an interview or within Lynn’s commentary....as the only one I’ve found is this one.
--------
HIGHLIGHT:
INT. HALPSKY'S OFFICE - DAY
MEGAN and ANNIKA are sitting across MRS. HALPSY's desk. MEGAN is wearing a shawl across her shoulders.
MRS. HALPSY So, I'm becoming concerned that Annika is not taking steps towards her future.
MEGAN nods
MEGAN Got it. Well, I'll be sure to talk to her about it at home.
She glances at her 'daughter' and looks back at MRS. HALPSY and flashes her a quick smile.
MEGAN So, we're good here?
MRS. HALPSY Mrs Hunter, I realise you must have a very busy life, but...I was hoping that we could all come up with a plan today.
MEGAN OK. Sure...a plan.
She flashes MRS. HALPSY another smile and turns to ANNIKA.
MEGAN Do you have one?
ANNIKA Uh...I...I don't know. I mean...It kind of seems stupid to plan that far in advance when you're just going to change your mind anyway. Right?
She gives her 'mother' a quick glance.
ANNIKA Say you had a kid, and then you realised you didn't really want the kid---
MRS. HALPSY Was there a pregnancy?
MEGAN No, she's talking about her mom---Me...
Drat! I hope she didn't notice!
MEGAN ...her mom.
MRS. HALPSY eyes them both suspiciously.
A small smile escapes ANNIKA. Humour still trumps trouble.
MEGAN And as her mom, I'd say that, sure...it does seem kind of stupid to make some sort of rigid plan for the future, but...
She looks from MRS. HALPSY to ANNIKA
MEGAN ...it's stupider not to start paying attention to who you are and what makes you happy.
She looks off into the distance. The current 'mission' temporarily forgotten.
MEGAN Otherwise, you just float.
ANNIKA listens to MEGAN, but MRS. HALPSY is desperately trying to make sense of it all.
MEGAN So...there's a start of her plan. Good meeting, Mrs Halpsky. You've given us a lot to think about.
MRS. HALPSY buys it.
MRS. HALPSY Yes, well. Yes.
MEGAN This is kind of an interesting job to have, huh? What kind of licensing does it take?
MRS. HALPSY Are you questioning my qualifications?
--------
My verdict of the film: 7/10

Today was a day off from work, which means that I got to play my games a bit longer than usual. I start my summer computer course next week. Someone suggested that I take C#, so I’m looking into that to see if it’s one of the free courses offered for homeschoolers. I also have to start my summer reading next week.
I went through and picked out a few books that looked interesting. The goal is to finish one book a week for 10 weeks. This is my list, but it may change:
You Should See Me in a Crown - Leah Johnson
The Serpent King - Jeff Zentner
Gilded - Marissa Meyer
All the Things We Never Knew - Liara Tamani
Ghost Wood Song - Erica Waters
Watch Us Rise - Renée Watson
Where the Dead Sit Talking - Brandon Hobson
They Both Die at the End - Adam Silvera
The Sound of Stars - Alechia Dow
Lord of the Flies - William Golding
Bonus:
Kaikeyi - Vaishnavi Patel
Daughter of the Moon Goddess - Sue Lynn Tan
A Magic Steeped in Poison - Judy I. Lin
This Woven Kingdom - Tahereh Mafi
I Must Betray You - Ruta Sepetys
Anatomy: A Love Story - Dana Schwartz
The Girls who Fell Beneath the Sea - Axie Oh
Gallant - V.E. Schwab
Accomplished today:
Created summer reading list
Volunteered at library (2 hours)
Ballet
Hearthstone dailies
Yoga
Piano practice
