My little surprise of the day : while browsing through the Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix (France), I came face to face with these two paintings :

On the left : L’assassinat de Marat, painted by Jean-Joseph Weerts, 1880.

On the right : la nuit du 9 au 10 Thermidor (the night of the 9th to 10th Thermidor), painted by Jean-Joseph Weerts, 1897.

I'm always surprised and pleased to come across works relating to the Revolution !

If you're ever in the north of France, I'd highly recommend this magnificent museum, where some very fine works are on display. For the record, the building was originally a municipal swimming pool.

Jean-Baptiste Hugues (April 15, 1849 – October 28, 1930) was a French sculptor.

The Child Heroes of the French Revolution

The ninth of ten children, Joseph (1779-1793) was the son of a gamekeeper to the Prince of Condé, Lord of Palaiseau. His father, who died in 1784, left the Bara family destitute. Of the three boys, his two older brothers were already in combat. In the fall of 1792, the adolescent was admitted to the Bressuire division, commanded by Adjutant General Jean-Baptiste Desmarres, who, in the service of the Condés, had taken the young Bara under his wing.

At that time, armies included many children; serving as military substitutes, they performed various tasks, not necessarily combat-related. It was from Bressuire that Desmarres fought the Vendéens under the command of the Vendéen Generalissimo Jacques Cathelineau.

In the Bressuire Division of the Army of the East, Joseph Bara was an artillery carter, meaning he drove the horses harnessed to an artillery piece. Occupying Jallais, near Collet, Desmarres's troop was surprised by the Vendéens on December 7, 1793. It was during this skirmish that Barra, leading two horses by the bridle, was attacked by the Vendéens.

At the rebels' command to shout "Long live the King," he responded "Long live the Republic." Struck in the forehead, he fell and died in the melee, pressing the tricolor cockade to his heart.

Bara was attacked by the Vendéens who wanted to steal his horses.

Deeply affected by the death of the 14-year-old boy, Desmarres appealed to the Convention to help Bara's impoverished family. He had volunteered for the 8th Hussars for having shared all the hardships and dangers of war and fought as a hero. After Barère read and commented on Desmarres's letter,

the Convention granted a pension to Bara's mother. Moved by this act of bravery, Robespierre exclaimed: "Only the French have heroes at 13." And proposing to establish Bara as a model of heroism, patriotism, and filial piety, he called for his Pantheonization.

This marked the beginning of Bara's heroization; Robespierre urged artists to celebrate courage and valor. Marie-Joseph Chénier composed Le Chant du départ (The Song of Departure, La Marseillaise, the French national anthem) in 1794.
