Les Fleurs De Pavot - Hippies Nous Voila (1968)
Les Fleurs De Pavot tried to create a bit mystery about their identity. claiming their members were Groovy Pat from London and Jesus from San Francisco, who met at a Soft Machine concert. Instead, with the help of Jean-Claude Vannier and Bernard Estardy, they recorded an LP of crazed French psych.

Histoire de Melody Nelson (1971)
Sad to see the magnificent Jane Birkin go ... another icon gone. No matter what she did over the decades — music, fashion, film, etc. — Jane was the absolute coolest. Histoire De Melody Nelson, her classic 1971 LP with Serge Gainsbourg, is well established today as a valuable touchstone for countless artists. But have you seen its accompanying film?
"Melody Nelson is a dream, you know," said arranger Jean-Claude Vannier. "But I don’t think it was a good thing to put pictures on the music. If you see the girl, it is dead. The film is not very good, I think, and I believe that Serge felt the same way as me."
Well, it might not be very good, but it's definitely got a good vibe, Gainsbourg glaring moodily behind the wheel of his Rolls-Royce, Birkin shimmying to those orchestral funk grooves. Goodbye to Jane ...

Chrysanths - Leave No Shadow - solo project of Modern Studies' Emily Scott, a set of cinematic songs with lush string arrangements
Dancing slowly into view with grace and poise, Chrysanths’ debut album Leave No Shadow feels like a major work from the start. A deep, technicolour world landscaped by multi-instrumentalist Emily Scott, Leave No Shadow evokes the immediacy of the moment, the richness of the senses, the flow and drama of existence. Intersecting with her fluid piano playing, Scott weaves complex string arrangements that invite in her effortless vocal performances. It’s the sound of a unique artist finding their voice. Recorded in Scotland with Emily Scott firmly in the producer’s chair, Leave No Shadow finds the artist flowering in new territory from that associated with her band, Glasgow-based Modern Studies. The most distinctive sonic elements here are the swirling, enveloping string arrangements written by Scott. With Susan Bear’s thoughtful bass guitar and Owen Curtis Williams’s delicate drums, the album takes on a luxurious timbre reminiscent of Jean Claude Vannier’s late 60s studio work or the evocative world-building of Fontana-era Scott Walker.

According to most fans he is going for the Gainsbourg look for a few years now // I think fans are too much invested in this Gainsbourg thing. When was the last time he talked about Gainsbourg himself? In 2016 I guess. In 2018 he only mentioned his Melody Nelson album as inspiration and he actually praised Jean-Claude Vannier’s work on that album. Imo he doesn’t dress like Gainsbourg, at least not anymore. I think he admires his music, which, to be honest, is really good, if you put the lyrics and vocals aside. I really hope he never turns into him lol.
So Alex likes his instrumentals, huh? It’s like me when people sent me the leaked Lana Del Rey Thunder song in 2020 and asked me how I liked it given Alex is on it (narrator’s voice “Alex is not on it”). I liked the instrumentals too. 😂🤣

M2S2 (2023)
As always, I choose a release and listen to it all [week?] long and choose my favorite song and add it to this compilation. At the end of the semester[s?] it makes a nice little time capsule playlist. I listen to the weekly release mostly at home now that I do not have any more coursework and am focusing on writing. On the occasion when I go to the laboratory at school for my internship, I take 9 to the Pont de l’alma and cross it to go down into RER C.

History of Melody Nelson (Part I - Some groundwork)
“La femme d’argent” / “Cargo Culte”
Regardless of the man’s character, here’s why this album is dear to many of us -and not just the french pop/70′s/90′s music.
Let’s start with the instance of Air the band and Moon Safari...
See before I was in on the “Melody”, the echoes of Melody was all around, either by sampled version of the tracks, or flat out inspirational tracks of my own time as I started to get into music (late 90′s when I was a kiddie).
I think I was around 10-12, where this french band called Air came to be in my soundscape, first with “Playground Lover” I think, then the “Moon Safari” album, and after 10.000Hz Legend, the rest was history. Yet for now let’s dwell into this Moon Safari and the musical parallels with Melody.
Before I make it about Serge and Jane, let’s settle this fact first, what I’m about to tell is more about Jean-Claude Vannier than anyone else in the story, the parallels that I’m about to mention that is, after that we can then make it about the storytellers, as this will be the mainline of this story core, shall you read it or not. I don’t, and am not allowed to know such things you see. So it would be nothing but proper for me to not invite you into further secret diaries.
So here we are,
“Ah Melody”
Let’s start random, well it is not random actually it was playing, non-chronological let’s say.
No wait, that’s not how it goes,
“La femme d’argent”
Before I move further, I’m not saying they “copied” anything, they might not be even aware, or it might be -as with everything else, might just be connected in my mind. So the music goes, I shall still make the parallels to tell a bigger story.
I really love that band, the french duo Air.
Here’s in comparison, “Cargo culte” of Serge Gainsbourg and Air’s “La femme d’argent” (see above)
Both great albums, production and impact wise, the story I wish to underline is far more than the likeness of these two babies,
Then we’ll move on to the production takes of Serge and compare the two,
In fact let’s do that while I wait for the thing to upload,
Vannier’s orchestral touch, that makes the most of the album indeed, but the Beatles-like drums (probably compressed much), and everything being close-mic’d especially the vocals,
It is so closely microphoned, you can hear the slightest articulation, close to what you do but with more bass I suppose, different times different mixing/mastering approaches but reminds me of a certain story-bearing voice.
Air on the other hand, although I think with more volume and comparably less dynamic, is more reflecting of the 90′s soundscapes.
ps: Chronologically speaking it started with a Tricky/massive attack remix for me, where these rather famous bass line was sampled, Portishead too sampled it as I reckon, I’ll get to those as well...

Jean-Claude Vannier: Histoire De Melody Vannier / A Medley
Histoire De Melody Vannier: Sixty slices of rare, vintage Parisian prog and pop-psych from the musical mind of Jean-Claude Vannier. A name likely familiar to the cognoscere surrounding his work with Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson, the French composer Jean-Claude Vannier was paid a loving tribute in 2008 via Andy Votel’s kaleidoscopic medley of the composer’s varied work.
