These things are absolutely beautiful and far more understated than Clarice Cliff's usual designs which, personally, I tend to find a bit garish. These are terrific, though, and could be yours for a very decent price; just follow the link! https://millvintageandretro.etsy.com/listing/1756798818

Tales From the Velvet Trap - Sapphic Historical Fiction
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My newest short story series completes next week. The first story is free. All on Medium. I also paint the covers for the stories.
Tales From The Velvet Trap is a series set in Prohibition-era Chicago, following the lives of Vivian and Violet. Vivian, deeply rooted in the city's underground with her mob ties, exudes dominance and complexity, while Violet, a housewife, is drawn into an unexpected affair that shakes the foundations of her life. Their narrative unfolds in the seedy glamour of a speakeasy where jazz, gin, and illicit desires swirl together. As Violet struggles with her newfound cravings and fears, Vivian continues to wield power and seduction, making every encounter a play for control. The series navigates themes of forbidden love, power dynamics, and the quest for personal freedom, all while portraying the risks of living authentically in a time of societal constraints.
Secrets of the Velvet Trap is the sequel series coming in the spring.
Excerpt
Violet had never danced with a woman. She had never been so close to another woman, never felt another woman’s body against hers or the gentle pressure of a woman’s hands on her hips. With her unapologetically masculine charm, Vivian stirred a longing so unsettling, and yet so enticing, that Violet feared she would go mad.
Her mind shouted at her to leave, warned that everyone was watching her. Her cheeks heated as she realized everyone would know what kind of woman she was. But her body obeyed Vivian, and she gave herself over to the slow rhythm, bathed in the warm glow of amber lights. She moved with a mixture of desire and fear and wondered, as she often did, how could she feel such an attraction to such an aberration.
The enticing scent of musky cologne and Vivian's warm breath on her neck confused her. When Vivian kissed her neck, nuzzled her ear, and drew their hips together, Violet began to tremble. She lost her breath, and then gasped to retrieve it.
“I’m not like you,” she managed to whisper.
Vivian forced her mouth against Violet’s resisting lips until they finally yielded.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1925), first edition, second printing with errors corrected, one of 3,000 copies. Seconds (printed in August) are actually scarcer than firsts (printed in April) but they are 1/3 the price. While it has since been regarded as a masterful piece of classic literature, The Great Gatsby did not gain popularity until after the author's death in 1940. The novel tells the story of the star-crossed lovers Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan against the backdrop of wealthy and materialistic West Egg, Long Island, during the Prohibition Era. Although Fitzgerald meant the text to be critical of the 1920s social climate, today The Great Gatsby is beloved for its vivid descriptions of extravagant parties, palatial homes, and eccentric characters that are emblematic of the Jazz Age. The text remains extremely popular today and is widely taught in schools across the United States. The first edition was printed in a run of 20,870 copies; today, Scribner's sells almost 25 times as many copies per year as printed books and e-books. #thegreatgatsby #fscottfitzgerald #roaring20s #jazzage #firstedition #rarebooks #gatsby #fitzgerald (at B & B Rare Books, Ltd.) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmXF5-DJppW/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

For @schittscreekdrabbleblog word: Perform
**********
“I told Jocelyn that you were conceived to Islands in the Stream, but alas, she was unmoved.”
“Probably because it came out after I was born.”
“You were prema-TURE.”
“That’s not how - Mom, you have to stop telling people I was conceived to every song you want to perform. Like when you told your LA singing group it was Black Diamond by Kiss, which not only is a horrifying choice, but implies I was born in nineteen-seventy-four!”
“David, vanity does not become you.”
“Mkay, I’m gonna go back to listening to Mariah Carey. After all, I was conceived to Fantasy.”

ANY OLD TIME YOU'VE GOT THE BLUES, SHE'LL SOOTHE THEM AWAY FOR YA.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on American jazz and swing music singer, Billie Holiday (born Eleanora Fagan; April 7, 1915 – July 17, 1959), nicknamed "Lady Day," illustrated by William Stout for his "Legends of the Blues" portraits series.
MINI-OVERVIEW: "After hearing her music and learning her heartbreaking life story, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Lady Day. Her rendition of the controversial "Strange Fruit" haunts me to this very day.
In drawing and painting her portrait I tried to emphasise Billie’s beauty, her femininity and her elegance."
-- WILLIAM STOUT (American painter/illustrator/blues aficionado) on Billie Holiday (and her portrait)
